Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

Introduction

Even after having risen to the utmost rank of shin'uchi, Yotarou struggles to find his own identity in the world of rakugo. Caught between his master's teachings and the late Sukeroku's unique style, his performance lacks an important ingredient—ego. And while his popularity packs the theaters, he is but one of the few; rakugo is under threat of being eclipsed. Meanwhile Yakumo, regarded by many as the last bastion of preserving the popularity of rakugo, struggles to cope with his elderly state. Even though his performances are still stellar, he fears that he is nearing his limits. His doubts grow stronger as an old friend creeps ever closer. Konatsu, for her part, attempts to raise her son as a single mother, which Yotarou is heavily opposed to. Instead, he seeks to persuade her to marry him and in turn raise her son as his own. In Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen, the curtains fall on Yotarou and Yakumo's story, tasked with restoring the near-obsolete art form as well as overcoming their internal conflicts. Our storyteller's stories aren't his own anymore, he has other storytellers telling his stories in their own way. In a way shaping and creating a new story altogether depending who is telling them. We follow each storyteller's narration through their turmoil and struggles only to find that they are all similar but never quite the same in the way that they are going through life, one is headstrong, one is desperate, one is rebellious, one is lost. Each of these storytellers are trying to grasp control from each other to shape their own, but at the same time these storytellers are not the kind to trample on each other. they want every story to flourish, to have the chance to shine. A beautiful wrap up of the story, a true human journey from start to finish.

This is a banger follow-up to season one. The music is still amazing, the animation is still good, and the storytelling is still great. Best of all, Yotarou is way less annoying. After the first few episodes of season one, I found Yotarou to be unbearable and was thrilled when the flashback took over. Going into this I was concerned with him being an actual main character, but he chilled way out. His over-the-top vibes became way more natural and bearable, and he was a good main character. He still had his moments, but it was nowhere near as bad as it was in season one. During this season we see relationships grow, people grow, and lessons be learned. The strength of this series is absolutely its storytelling through nuance, it's amazing, I love it. So much happens, there are plot twists,…

I'd say 2nd season is worse than first one. The first is better because I felt really inside the story, the development, I think authors made the environment work better. In the 2nd besides plot twists(I think one is forced and one is amazing), good ending(it could be better), I really don't understand what the point of the anime is. I don't want to be misunderstood, I think it's a really good anime anyway, but first season is a 10, 2nd is almost a 9. Really disappointed because I felt every moment like this is the life of Kiku but while first season is a good characters rounded the second loses a lot of potential in the main and side characters. Maybe it would have needed more eps

*Note: I will be assuming you have seen S1 and thus spoiling it. However, I will be refraining from spoiling S2 as best I can* A couple days ago, I wrote my review for S1, saying "Tbh, S2 is higher rated so maybe I'm just dooming and it'll be all peaches and cream, the author managed to make a plot point I was dreading actually pretty good, but the present day stuff is kinda blah." And I was quite surprised at how the author managed to surpass my expectations. ...it's even worse than I could have expected. So, naturally, it failed to live up to the giant albatross S1 gave it by skipping ahead a decade. In that time, Yotaro went from being basically fresh out of Kikuhiko's boywomb as a storyteller to being a shin'uchi, Yotaro and Konatsu basically had their entire love story told, and K…

This show was great at times but ultimately somewhat disappointing in the end. The rakugo scenes this season felt very tedious and were and overall drag to get through to the point where I started skipping through them altogether. Many of the characters come off either very bland or completely annoying Yotarou fails to show any depth outside of being the typical loud and obnoxious but good-natured MC throughout the whole series The twist at the end felt very unnecessary and really stains an otherwise great character in Yakumo. Konatsu's tsundere act and the overall secrecy surrounding the case of her son's father got very old fast imo and with the 2 twists that happened at the end any chance of me liking her character went out the window. 6/10, Yakumo carried.

You are not immune to empathy. "The art of Rakugo is about creating empathy" Descending Stories. The hook is the promise of a homage to an obscure artform. The content is a devastating character drama inflicted on all sides, throughout generations. Rakugo Shinjuu has always been fascinating. There's no clear connotations you can attach it to, no description or definition you can box it into. It's an everchanging, sprawling tale about life and humanity. Encapsulating a fragment of emotional complexity and spiritual dexterity within the decaying art form of Rakugo. It presents a poignant case study of the burden of love—be it for art, family, or friendship. Yotaru bring us back to where we left off, revealing that it has been, to his surprise, an entire year of bowing his head down, coin…

And the Genroku anime is over. I just love anime that unravels on lesser-known Japanese things. Shogi, Karuta, Hanafuda, now Rakugo. These animes interest me the most since I learn more from them. This anime went above and beyond in terms of how it executed the story. This season was about the master who was trained last season, and he mentors an up-and-coming master who wants to redefine Rakugo. This old master wants to take Rakugo with him to the grave but this guy is not having any of it. In the meantime, Sukeroku (The intern) is wanting to keep it alive and practices with all the might hes god. In the meantime, the old masters friends daughter is staying with the master, and she got pregnant since she wants to be a mother. Soi Sukeroku marries her. In this season we also see some…

As a whole, I took this series slow, and I thought that doing so might make it difficult to remember some of the beats. Then, I found myself sitting through a rakugo that was a repeat of a previous story I'd heard in the show, and I could remember all the beats, even the little eccentricities of the performer. All of that is to say that this was a truly beautiful experience that sticks in my mind in just the right way. It exceeds the original season while building on the foundation that season created, which is really apropos for this series. It has a few truly stand out moments, though it all weaves into the larger story. Like its storytellers, this anime is worthy of your attention and patience.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu | Descending Stories Season 2 Review. Spoilers for Season 1 + S2EP1-2 https://anilist.co/review/15670 Review for Season 1 With the flashback finally over we can get back to the main story. Our MMC is continuing to rise up in the ranks of Rakugo. His shows being more and more popular. Him becoming more and more successful. The MMC2 (Yakumo) is having his old age catch up to him. The FMC gives birth and the story moves on. We learn a little bit more about the MMC's backstory and his Yakuza related people. His relationship with the FMC also becomes more romantic but in a subtle way. Before I start talking about this series, I do wanna talk about my previous review as well. When I wrote my original review, Something happened that hadn't happened in a long time…

In Sukeroku Futabi-hen we now follow the growth of Yotaro as a Rakugo performer, he now is somewhat famous on radio and T.V. but he is struggling to get his true voice as a performer. On the other hand, we have Yakumo who is getting older and fears that one day he can no longer do Rakugo, which he intends to take to the grave when he dies. Things aren’t looking too hot for anyone involved but there is always Rakugo as a means of connection for them and us the public. This season punched me in the gut too many times to count as it did the unbelievable for me, as I didn’t think that it would surpass the first story arc with such beloved characters but then here we are. This season tastes like a refined and better-preserved liquor, every episode is packed with a wide range of emotions that…

This is my first time writing a review, I've always wondered how much free time or what kind of mindset people must exactly have to write a review for an anime. But this. I believe it is anime like these that make you want everyone to know just how brilliant this piece of art is and why you are in love with it. The story and characters are without a doubt a Solid 10, the sequel did an amazing job carrying forward with the build-up season 1 set for it. The plot does not have too many twists and turns, nor does it have shallow settings to enjoy which is the reason why even though it was extremely entertaining to me I have rated it 8 for enjoyment keeping in mind a general point of view. The Art work and Sound track especially the sheer brilliant work done by the voice actors in portraying…

This second season was all about legacies. Though the first season had some of these themes too the final season was solely based on them and it brought closure to it. The legacy of Sukeroku. In every generation, the Sukeroku were better than the ones who became Yakumo but fate led to them having that position taken from them. The seventh-generation Yakumo only got the title because he used his power as the son of the previous Yakumo, the eighth generation Sukeroku died before he could take the title and the ninth generation Sukeroku(she never took the title but was the daughter of a Sukeroku) was denied by default because she was a woman. But in the end a Sukeroku did inherit the Yakumo name and that was Yotaro. This symbolized the end of an era. The legacy of Yakumo. The Yakumos dedicate…

Where do I begin? Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is incredible. I’ve never been so glued to the screen while watching an anime. Whatever I have to say will fail to convey the beauty of SGRS, but I will still try to do so, in an attempt to convince just one more person to take a chance on this show, or even just pick up this second season if they’ve only seen the first. After all, It took one rakugo performance to convince Yotaro to strive to be a storyteller, so perhaps I can do the same with an anime review on MyAnimeList, right? I could write an entire analysis of the plot of this show. It would take me hours to explain what the story is about and what everything means, but I feel it’s wrong to go in-depth. What I can say is this is as much a story about the longevity of the art of rakug…

Shouwa genroku is such an amazing ANIME.. MASTERPIECE ANIME.....one of my fav ANIME..as a normal story level (unlike superpowers ANIME) .... it surpasses attack on titan and it is very big achievement... you are gonna love it go and watch I'm just crying in whole ANIME.... whole ANIME is very special to me ........ Every character is so awesome and emotional ...I am in love with every character .. this were a superhero story, Makoto would use her powers to save the world, but instead, she uses time leaps to sing karaoke longer and fix mistakes in class and her love life. Well, until reality kicks in with a surprising twist. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a heartfelt story brimming with youthful energy and positivity, which makes it an excellent introduction to the medium.

I haven't even started writing yet but the feeling of admiration I have for this show just submerges me into this unexplainable euphoria that leaves me feeling blank and weird in so many ways. I was unsure if I should write a review for this anime. But now I have resolved to contribute something to this masterpiece. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu as a whole (including both seasons) is definitely something you'd continue to think about even after you've finished the whole thing. I didn't know rakugo until I watched the series. And I was utterly amazed by how the staff and the original author displayed this form of art with admirable characters and captivating story line. The music used in the opening themes really sets the mood for each episode. The sound of the rakugo accompaniment and t…

There's no better way to conclude this series with this season. There's a true sense of finality that a story like this needs in order to be satisfying and fulfilling. Its use of time skips are well utilized, emphasizing the themes of life and death. The characters feel so alive and their struggles felt real because in a way, those problems happen in daily life. The rakugo performances are also enjoyable. The artwork and animation are okay. While the latter is mostly static, the composition and writing are the show's strengths. Furthermore, the characters are so expressive. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen is the best way the series can end. It's emotionally driven and heart warming (or heart breaking). Go give the series a try. You won't regret it.

"I am despicable, and I have been so for a long time." Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu deserves a review beginning with this quote from "Farewell, my Concubine", as I see they have a lot in common. This quote represents Kikuhiko, the man who lies to the spectator. In the first season, the flow of the story is so intense that we forgot one point: the story is being told by a character. I got very disappointed when I'd watched (here it comes a little spoiler) Sukeroku and Miyokichi's death. I didn't find it plausible, credible; it was a fantasy, a tacky and very stupid way to kill a main character. But season two made everything clear: the narrator, Kikuhiko, was telling a lie, the lie he's been telling Konatsu since she was a child. Only when Matsuda tells the story, one season later, we k…

This is the most complete anime series that I've ever watched. It shows you the narration of Yakumo about their pre-war and post-war lives. The struggles of Miyokichi following her unrequited love. The fight for rakugo's survival of Sukeroku to the next generation of rakugo tellers. It's simply amazing to see all that being compressed in a 12 episode anime. The quality of animation and the sound design also cannot be ignored. Especially when it was labeled as Studio Deen. It gave me such raw emotions that I've never been experienced before. The rakugo stories, I simply fall in love with it, it exposed me to a much more diverse Japanese entertainment culture.

I really loved this anime. It's masterful storytelling, each character stands well on their own, and the visuals, metaphors, everything is gorgeous. There are many flawed and complex characters - and I mean pretty fucking flawed, but I don't think there's any character flaws in this season that season 1 didn't have. It's a beautifully told story about rakugo, regrets, and not being alone. However, the last episode definitely deserves a content warning. I'm doing my best to play by the rules here, but it's heavy enough that it might just recolour the whole series for me, so I have to mention it. Here it is in another link: https://prnt.sc/tzkina (it's a lightshot/screenshot link! I promise it's not sketchy!) MAL's telling me to write a longer review to submit this but my brain is shot LOL

I didn't enjoy the first season that much, it had some good elements but overall boring, unfortunately with my brain capacity, i forget a lot of the season. This second season however got me interested around the second half, connecting loose ends with season one. they way they showed the end of the characters along with the rakugo, was captivating and emotional. STORY: Nothing special beside the way they bind everything together at the end. CHARACTERS: Each character was unique and didn't seem fake, some were more interesting than others. ART: Animation was decent, character expressions was what shined. SOUND: Didn't really notice on this part, which is a good thing since a lot of times they annoy me. enjoyment: first few episode just passed time, but the last few hit kinda har…
