Animation-wise, there’s no question about it—it looked amazing back when the movie came out. Story-wise, though, it’s obviously not as strong as the game, and honestly, it still feels a bit weak. To be fair, I was kind of disappointed with Sephiroth's screentime, but given what the story needed, I get it. On the bright side, Cloud gets some really solid character development. And my absolute favorite thing about this movie? Hands down, the soundtrack—it’s a total masterpiece.
So yeah, I think for Final Fantasy VII fans, this movie is great entertainment and a nice way to reconnect with all the iconic characters. But if you’ve never played the game before, you’re definitely gonna be pretty lost watching it.

Before I write this review, or even watch the movie in the first place, I want to state my own history with Final Fantasy 7 and the overarching franchise first, for perspective. I grew up with Nintendo consoles and MMORPGs, never owning anything Playstation until I was in high school, and that's when I began to rapidly explore everything I reasonably could in the Final Fantasy franchise. That said, I deliberately put off 7 specifically, instead playing every other mainline game before it. I was (and still am) a bit of a contrarian, and when things become incredibly popular, I tend to get skeptical and more critical, and I genuinely didn't think 7 would live up to the hype.
I played it for the first time as a sophomore in college. And to put it short, I was right.
Don't misinterpret me, I…

The movie is average, but certainly better than the game it was based on(And I say this as a full-fledged fan of the FF and JRPG genres) . Another movie based on a game, something like Tekken Blood Vengence. The fights are typical JRPG. If the figure had been cut in half, it would have stood for another hour.
And although the fights can be spectacular, on the other hand everything else makes no sense. Characters jump from left to right as if I were watching Transformers The Movie 1986. The only difference was that Transformers The Movie 1986 had music to match the situation. In Advent Children there is some boring, incongruous music played on a piano. It doesn't help even when you hear a remix like "Thurks", "Jenova", "Those Who Fight" Or "Fanfare". The plot isn't any better either. The cr…

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children takes place two years after the events of the main game, in this time, Sephiroth has poisoned the lifestream and began to spread a disease through the mako that was released into the world when the main characters stopped METEOR. If none of this makes sense to you, don’t worry, the movie doesn’t explain it either. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children requires a deep understanding of the source material in order to fully enjoy the movie, and that’s a pretty big issue right there.
Story:
The story is relatively hard to follow, but it’s kind of smart when you have all the pieces to the puzzle, the problem is the fact that there’s a puzzle to solve in the first place. Three descendants(?) of Sephiroth are trying to find Jenova, who they consider to be their mo…

Excellent movie till you turn off Mute.
Look. The story sucks. The characters are dumb. The vocal direction is cringeworthy. The pacing drags on at times.
But dang if this isn't one of the prettiest, flashiest animations I've ever seen. I've watched this too many times to justify a lower score. The whole thing is a massive video game cutscene with exactly what I want from a video game cutscene.
The music is solid, too.
Doesn't matter whether or not you've played the original Final Fantasy VII. I promise you, you're not missing much if you're going into Advent Children cold like I did. I played the game later and am only more confused than before. Certain character models make less sense in HD than they did on the PS1. But they're minor characters anyways, don't worry about it.
If you'…

So I'm going to write this in two parts: as someone who has played the game and as someone who hasn't played the game.
As someone who has played (and loves) the game: this movie murdered the characters. This movie is the reason Cloud now has the reputation of being a whiny wimp. You really don't get that impression of him in the game. This movie really didn't need to be made and it makes me angry. It's a vanity project. The story itself isn't actually bad but it just doesn't need to exist.
Rant over. So as someone who hasn't played the game, the story would be kind of confusing but it's gorgeous, the music and sound in general is great and most importantly, it's just fun to watch. The battles are very well choreographed.
Overall, I would still recommend this to both fans of the game and…

Final Fantasy VII might just be the most influential instalment in the entire FF franchise. It's not my personal favourite and the polygonal graphics certainly don't hold up well compared to most of the other instalments, but it did have an epic story with a grand scale and some fantastic characters. Naturally, Square-Enix decided to take advantage of the game's legacy with a prequel game, a sequel game and some film/OVA adaptations. Most of which were not good. This brings us to Advent Children, quite possibly the best received of all of those tie-ins. The film came out in 2005 with a slightly longer, complete version coming out in 2009. We'll be looking at the complete version and asking a simple question. Does it hold up?

Two years after the events of VII, a strange disease ca…

I am a big Final Fantasy Fan and i played Final Fantasy VII around 1000 hours(feeled).
The Movie Advent Children is set 2 years after the events of Final Fantasy VII and there we already have the problem. People who did not play the game will hardly understand the plot or what certain elements in the story mean. It was a great idea to made this movie but sadly it is in fact only for Final Fantasy fans.
Graphics are very good.
But many characters from the game are barely shown.
So the viewer can not really build an connection to them and will eventually have only little sympathy for them.
A film that is around 100 minutes long is to short for a Final Fantasy game.
Cause you will probably have to play atleast 50 hours until you reach the final boss.
Nevertheless as a Hardcore Final Fa…

Overview:
FF7 Advent Children gets a lot of hate online, and some of it is quite justifiable. The story in this movie isn't very good, it doesn't further develop 7's beloved characters, and it isn't really a great continuation to the epic storyline. Why did I rate it so high? I will explain.
Story and characters: 5/10 warning spoilers!
We see that Cloud is still crushed by Aeris's death and isn't living with Tifa, because he's being a whiny bitch(I actually liked Tifa in the first place). The world is being ravaged by a mysterious disease and our heroes have all mostly gone their separate ways. The plot picks us when some remaining clones of Sephiroth are searching for Jenovah's remains so they can bring back everyone's favorite human/demon hybrid from the dead to wreak havoc. Apparentl…

This surprisingly isn’t as bad as most shows based on games are. Normally they base it on people who have actually seen the game and not on new people just coming in. I have never really played the game but I have watched play throughs and know a basic about the story of the game. This movie explains a bit more about the storyline and seems to pick up after the game or at least some years after. Sadly, most of it is very criptic and through the eyes of a child rather then an adult who might have actually understood what was going on during that time. With my basic knowledge, it was a bit hard to understand. It jumps from the past to the present in a very large leap that I guess was trying to give you information but it was much more confusing then it should be. That and the forced romance…

First let me say that I absolutely love the FFVII universe.
(Spoilers below)
This movie is definitely not for those who haven't played the games. You will have no idea what's going on and they don't bother explaining. The animation and soundtracks are top notch. It is a little confusing about what's going on even for a fan though.
That aside this game is a great conclusion to the series. The moment when you see Zack with Aerith. The way they fast forwarded time and how the only one alive was Red. In terms of a conclusion, this is one of the best movies/endings I've ever seen.

I'll admit that I'm a huge final fantasy fan. Even though I really haven't played FF 7, I have played bits of it and have seen some of it online. The reason for that is because one, I didn't have the appropriate system to play it and two, I didn't get into Final Fantasy until IX came out. Nevertheless though; I was familiar with the story, the characters, the villian, etc. So, when I heard that they were making an actual animated movie on FF VII, I got really excited. I rented it, (now own it), and while it was a little lacking, I actually did find myself enjoying it.
While at first the story was good and kept me engaged at the beginning, but I did find myself getting a little confused with it. I knew that this geostigma had something to do with Jehova and Sepheroth, but never really unde…

If you look at the other reviews for this movie such as Rotten Tomatoes, I can understand why they gave it such a bad score.
Not everyone plays video games or may not even know what the Final Fantasy series is. (Please, I hope everyone knows).
To be honest, I watched the movie before playing the actual game. But I knew almost all the characters (instead for Vincent and Zack) since they all appeared in the Kingdom Hearts game. It is quite complicated to know whats going on in the movie if someone has never played the game before. But for me, I read the game summary.
Overall, I gave this movie a 10. I bough Advent Children just last year and I can tell you it's one of my favorite movies.

I am utterly amazed at how many negative and mediocre ratings and reviews this has gotten on this site... Are these people just nostalgic over something that didn't get added from FFVII the game?!
This movie is epic... period... watch it, love it.
Story:
A continuation of FFVII 2 years later, shows the world recovering from everything that happened in the game. Connects to the game storyline perfectly, and accurately represents it all. Great development, and the concept behind the remnants of Sephiroth was a great idea and made for something really special, and even set up for another story to be told beyond this in FFVII's line.
Art:
The best that exists... No... really, it doesn't get any better than this. Equal with FF spirits within of course, same company. As real as it gets. CGI…

Man this was fucking awful.
FF7 was great, so I thought this one would be a pretty safe bet. Looking back I probably shouldn't have expected anything better, but for some reason, I figured this one would at least have the potential to not completely suck. There's a ton of stuff you could've done with the idea that would've been awesome---for example, you could set the story like 20 years in the future and have Cloud be a fat butthole who runs a McDojo in the middle of Virginia, make him get into fights with dark sorcerers (his landlord) or whatever, maybe even get Nicolas Cage to do the VA work (preferably for every character) or some terrible techno DJ (Nine Inch Nails?) to do the soundtrack, and then have like, a final showdown between Cloud and a CGI rendition of Anderson Cooper where…

I must admit, when I first saw this movie, had not even played any Final Fantasy games.. only Kingdom Heart II. Shame on me, I know. The reason I wanted so badly to see the movie was probably because I really liked Cloud as a character when he appeared in KHII. And so I found some video's at youtube and found myself lost. I bought the movie because it was quite cheap, and then I did some Final Fantasy research while I waited for it to arrive in my mailbox. So I learned a big deal about the characters, which I think was a good idea.
- The story is rather unfinished in this movie. But I liked the idea, the setting and stuff, so it is good. I give it a 7.
- The art, in the shape of animation here is simply outstanding! I love how they put so much work into it. I rate it 10.
- The sound effec…

I haven't played the game yet, but this movie made me want to. The story itself wasn't that special. But the action in the movie was absolutely the best. No movie, anime, Tv series has better fights than this. After watching this movie, I could never bring myself to like any action-based anime like DBZ, Naruto or Bleach. Why? Because it was all about action and the action SUCKED. I've rarely found fights that could compare. Almost all the time they are turn-based, only one person attacking at a time, or it ends up being a cluster fuck of power-ups.
The animation was awesome. This is SE after all. And the characters were diverse. I loved their designs, especially Vincent's. Music is, just like any other final fantasy game, impressive.
In conclusion this is a really fun movie. The action…

If there is one thing Square-Enix is good at, well, it's cashing in on sequels and remakes, most of which are completely worthless. While I have no problems with ports, it's the remakes and sequels which really grind my gears. The FF III remake was horrible in so many ways (it introduced characters who were nothing more than names). FF IV for the DS wasn't much better (can't even use Bahamut without Zeromus countering...what is with all the countering?). Anyways, VII wasn't my first Final Fantasy, nor is it my favorite, and certainly by no means is it the best in the series. However, I am by no means a VII hater as I certainly do love the game. Is it overrated...yes...but it is by no means horrible. My love for the game was ultimately "pissed on" by the creation of this and other side stor…

Final Fantasy used to be heralded as the untopped king of RPGs back in the late 80s and early to mid 90s. The video games redefined the role playing game genre and came the closest to immersing gamers into a fictitous realm and battling the unreal and supernatural beasts and creatures only found in the pages of Dungeons & Dragons monster manuals that table top gaming provided. The series can be considered Macbeth, ruling over the RPG console gaming world that the Dragon Warrior series and Sega's Shining Force franchise could only hold their own so much. But much like Macbeth, (then) SquareSoft would fall victim to it's own madness, and that madness emerged in the form of easily the most overhyped, overrated video game Final Fantasy VII. I won't take anything away from it's success in the m…
