Hanamonogatari

Introduction

Now that Koyomi Araragi and Hitagi Senjougahara have graduated, very few familiar faces remain at Naoetsu Private High School. One of these is Suruga Kanbaru, holder of the Monkey's Paw. When she begins to hear talk of a mysterious being known as the "Devil" who will magically solve any problem, Kanbaru immediately thinks these rumors are about her and decides to investigate. She discovers the Devil is actually Rouka Numachi, a former basketball rival from junior high who is no longer able to play due to a leg injury. Rouka provides free advice to those who seek her out. Acting as a collector of misfortune, she enjoys relieving the stress of her clients by providing them with the false hope of having their problems solved. Although Kanbaru sees no real harm being done, she reprimands Rouka for lying and heads home, relieved she is not the cause of the rumors. But she may have a reason to worry after all: she finds that her left hand has reverted back to its human form. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

As the sixth series of the arching series of monogatari, for the length that it is, it does shine light on some character dynamics and relations, and definitely enriched our protagonist, Koyomi Araragi. Compared to other series of Monogatari, this is one of the minor series, not because of its length, but by its additions in the plotline, which was not as significant as previous series chronologically such Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari, except by one character, and this is a point to be contested but it is a point to be put out there as a note. The star(Not protagonist) of this series is Suruga Kanbaru and the additions made to the dynamics between Koyomi Araragi and Koyomi Araragi as a result were significant in that space. The rating is how much advancement has been made in dialog…

Definitely more dialogue based than others which is not a bad thing, and then we are also taking a pit stop on Kanbarus character, which I liked, I think it is fine to deviate a little and build up one of the side characters. The dialogue was well done and the story around it was interesting enough. I think the main takeaway from this is the dialogue and relationship between Kanbaru and Numachi, its engaging and fun to listen to, and the story as it comes to the conclusion is pretty sweet. Then we get a little bit of the usual antics. Its a shorter part but its really just its own standalone 1 parter which is nice. Overall its not the best of the series but it has all I love about the series here.

You may think that my 8/10 is a bit high for Hanamonogatari (and I think so too), but the series still holds its own. Kanbaru may not be as interesting a character to explore as the main cast of the series, but the show takes her perspective with her old classmate to let the viewers know more about her personality and her growth after Bakemonogatari and when Araragi and Senjougahara go to college. In short, even though it is a TV special with only five episodes, it still holds the core of the Monogatari series and is no less than the previous seasons, at least for me.

The first thing to say about this season is that it’s best not to watch it unless one is at their 100% ‘cause I was kind of sleepy when I watched it and boy was it tough. In terms of visuals and sound I didn’t find much differences from the previous season so I don’t bother much with it. The opening has Kanbaru and some other girl acting as friends even when they are enemies, though there’s a part where the vocals change completely and it is nice. The ending has a very creepy and completely different art style so it was cool to watch even though the song itself was more of the same. Some recurring characters has different designs which are good but the most important one isn’t permanent so fuck it. This season takes two risks. One, coming out at this point even though chronologically is…

I feel like I should preface this by explaining that Kanbaru has never been a character I care a whole lot about, so Hanamonogatari was never going to grip me like the rest of the Monogatari series has. Keep in mind that you'll probably enjoy these five episodes a lot more than I did if you've been waiting for Kanbaru to have a moment in the spotlight. I did actually like seeing what I felt was a different side of Kanbaru, and I think transitioning her into a narrator for Hanamonogatari went fairly well. Not every character can carry a narrative, and even though I didn't enjoy following Kanbaru as much as some, she was presented to be a strong and effective main character. Because of that, a lot of awesome stuff was either added to or revealed about her. These five episodes felt more lik…

Did you notice when the last time Suruga had a major role prior to this arc was? The arc she was introduced in, Suruga Monkey. Meaning that in between, we’ve had 46 episodes almost entirely devoid of her, only making occasional minor appearances. I missed her greatly is what I’m trying to say. Now she is finally back to the spotlight in Hanamonogatari, also known as the Suruga Devil arc. The second stand-alone arc of the series following Nekomonogatari: Kuro. As a big fan of the character, this season lived up to my expectations wonderfully. I would say that it even surpassed them, managing to deliver a heartfelt, touching story of two individuals caught up in their own fears. Hanamonogatari very gracefully unravels the insecurities of its lead, Suruga Kanbaru, in a slow methodical ma…

Hanamonogatari's frequent malignment, or perhaps indifference, within the Monogatari series is always something that has puzzled me. It is without a doubt my favorite entry, one that is characterized by the profound, inexplicable feeling of melancholia that is left in the wake of what is perhaps the most tense, oppressive atmosphere the series has established. Hanamonogatari, like many other arcs in the second season, is a fairly serious character deconstruction which highlights facets of the new narrator's personality that were hitherto mostly obscured. I would say this is a good thing, because as much as I often enjoy Monogatari's stream-of-consciousness banter, fourth wall breaks, and inopportune lechery (which, let's be real, quickly lost its impact/appeal no matter how tongue-in-chee…

Hanamonogatari is (depending who you ask) either the closing arc of Second Season or the middle arc. I personally watched it after finishing all of Monogatari Series: Second Season, I don't necessarily know which order is best, and I don't think it really matters. Its story is pretty detached from the rest of Second Season, taking place the following year after the events of the previous installment in the series, and because of its detached nature I think it doesn't really matter. I could probably make up some weak arguments for watching it in a certain place, but it doesn't matter and nobody cares. If I had to give one argument for each side, I'd say that Hitagi End is a much more fitting ending for the season, while watching Hanamonogatari last gives you the deeper look into Kaiki that…

tl;dr: A Monogatari arc that is pretty solid albeit somewhat rushed, but is placed in a crazy place chronologically for when it’s supposed to be watched. This is the adaptation of the remaining novel from the second season of novels in the Monogatari franchise. It should have taken place in between Kabukimonogatari and Otorimonogatari, but was chosen to be adapted afterwards. Since the focus in this arc is clearly on Kanbaru and a certain plot thread that seemed to involve Kanbaru was just completely left out of the previous season of the anime, I assumed that this would fill that in. I was completely wrong. This has absolutely nothing to do with that and doesn’t fill in any of the holes left hanging from the previous season. Rather, it takes place long after any arc from the previous sea…

First two episodes aren't all that engaging, and because of the focus purely on suruga it was a bit too stiff to watch, given monogatari's heavy dialogue nature, but it picked itself up pretty nicely in the end, episodes 4 and 5 were great The dynamics between suruga and rouka were amazing and the exploration of suruga's character further was a nice addition and a breath of fresh air. Kaiki continues to amaze me every time he's on screen Sadly I can't rate it higher and it's my least favorite season so far but it's completely fair as you can't really do anything in 5 episodes, at least not anything that can top the other seasons Overall, fun time, not as fun or immersive as the other seasons but it's alright, not every season has to be bakemonogatari level

Hanamonogatari is the second instalment of the second Monogatari season as well as the closing arc of said season. The arc follows Kanbaru as she comes to terms with a rivalry held between her and fellow basketball player Rouka Numachi who survives on the misfortunes of others. The arc is a mere five episodes in length and does very little to add to the overall story of Monogatari. The arc begins following Kanbaru as she rediscovers her rival, Rouka, for the first time in three years. Rouka has been living as the embodiment of the devil and looking for the devil’s body parts so she could fully absorb his power. Kanbaru leaves town for a few nights and encounters Kaiki who tells Kanbaru she must give up her monkey paw to Rouka, despite Rouka already having taken it at this point. As the day…

If you don't like dialogue and like action, this isn't for you... well you probably won't even be enjoying the Monogatari series to begin with. Since that's what the series mainly is. This one is basically to summarize it, 95% dialogue and 5% basketball. Not everything in the Monogatari did I enjoyed, I enjoyed Bakemonogatari and Second Season (which is my favorite). This is would fall in third place and focus mainly on the one character who was missing in the second season. I enjoyed the overall plot, it was what I would say... very bitter-sweet and I enjoyed the misery we all shared in watching this one. It was beautifully tragic.

So this is where Monogatari turns from a supernatural detective show to a yuri sports romance. Just kidding. Well, not entirely kidding. Hanamonogatari follows Kanburu Suruga in her senior year of high school, after all her friends graduated. The story covers how she adapts to being alone, being confused, and being doubtful, all parts of becoming an adult. It's very much a relatable story. Not so much humor in this season, but the story is actually very insightful into the feelings of a character who hasn't shown up much recently, which is great. All in all a nice short season.

While it may not be the weakest of the Monogatari series story-wise and brings some much-appreciated focus to a side character, Hanamonogatari ultimately comes up short in the face of its predecessors. There are enjoyable parts of the show: the return of a previous character, the aforementioned returned focus, and the interesting start. However, one of the new characters brought into the world of Monogatari creates a headache that lasts for the last half of the series. This antagonist nudges the viewer to turn off the series rather than hope to see the protagonist succeed against them. The new antagonist is a package of flaws and cliches that are seen in Monogatari and other anime: there is nothing truly good/evil, doing good hurts something else, etc. Never mind the fact that a lot of t…

I'm going to talk about Hanamono's story, since every other metric as per a Monogatari production is tip top. Breaking down the walls and walls of dialogue set up by Nisio Isin, you can ultimately summarize the central idea of this show in 1 sentence: Growing up is to realize that people (in this case herself and her mother) are not perfect and that it is okay to be flawed. This alone is great. It's a great theme and Shaft delivers on its execution. What's the problem here then? Well, it's a rehash of many many other Monogatari stories without bringing out something fresh. From Nadeko Medusa to Tsubasa Tiger, Ougi Dark to Koyomi Reverse, all of these stories had a similar main idea of coming-of-age/self-acceptance, but they consistently had something tangible and substantial to sort of s…

Hanamonogatari is a relatively average arc from the Monogatari Series. Hanamonogatari was originally supposed to be part of Monogatari Series: Second Season (it is in the light novel), so it fits pretty well with those arcs if you’ve seen them. Hanamonogatari is another monkey arc, but we follow Suruga Kanbaru as she meets up with an old friend. What makes Hanamonogatari stand out is the writing. It has an intricate plot, which is the highlight of the arc. Sadly, I cannot talk about it in too much detail because it’s 5 episodes that depend on a plot twist. What I can say, is that I enjoyed the first three episodes. Hanamonogatari tells you a full, well written, convincing, wholesome story; then, it pulls a big plot twist in episode four. I’m not gonna say the plot twist original, or clev…

Warning: spoilers. Let's start saying that i really liked Hanamogatari, of course i watched the full movie version in one go. Visuals are above average for monogatari stardards, and the feeling of a movie as a whole arc was really great. Some of my friends said that this is a bit of a plot heavy arc. I don't think it was boring tough, it caught my attention and curiosity for it's whole duration, i've even watched it a second time to write a better comment. As usual, i especially like to speak of the "food for thoughts" this series give, so lets begin. The arc starts with Kanbaru mentally speaking with her dead mother, which is considered a bad person. In "being the poison" i think she mean that it's better to crush others than to be crushed, but Kanbaru refuses this reasoning and wants…

Hanamonogatari just didn't do it for me as a fan of the Monogatari series. It's more of a side story focusing on Kanbaru and an old basketball rival of hers, Numachi. And really, that was a problem for this anime. Kanbaru is a likable character, but she is not nearly charismatic enough to carry an entire anime as the lead, especially when her foil, Numachi is particularly bland. The entirety of the anime focused entirely on these two characters and only briefly featured cameos from the Araragi family and Kaiki Deshuu. This was a mistake, as most of the engaging dialogue and mystery was missing from this installment, precisely because most of the cast was either gone, or only involved for a cup of coffee. But what really hurt the anime was the insanely long backstory of Numachi, she spe…

This series is basically just talking. Talking, talking talking and talking. I know the other Monogatari seasons contains a lot of talking and mystery, but this one is the worse yet. It really didn't quite feel like the typical monogatari seasons where Araragi is the Main character, and he walks around to explore the mystery that the viewers also are queries about. Anyhow.. Ever since I started watching this Monogatari series, I noticed a high frequency sound when sound effects were played. So I guess either the sound wasn't checked through an equalizer, or the people making these sound effects didn't have the possibility to hear these high frequencies. Overall I feel like this have been the most boring Monogatari series Yet. But you might like this kind of mystery.
