A TROUBLED MARRIED LIFE OF AN ARTISTIC LADY WHO HAPPENED TO BE AN AIRHEAD
The animation is great; it's fluid, and there's no CGI insight. I know it's a strange thing to say, but when the bombs and multitudes of fire are coming down from the sky, it looks glorious and magnificent.
The art style reminds me of some Ghibli films, but this show has a lot more maturity and darkness in its theme.
I liked it especially when the art style transitioned to a painting/watercolor type of visual.
I am surprised MAPPA could make this kind of anime.
The sound effects are explosively striking.
Air raid alarms are panic-inducing; it must be horrifying hearing those every time, even when there are no actual aerial explosions coming down at you.
The only thing I didn't like about the movie and most Japa…

Note: This is a review of the extended cut of this film.
In This Corner of the World is a marathon of a film and perhaps the most restrained WWII anime I’ve seen so far. While the war is certainly a key factor in the story and how it shapes the lives of the characters, the central thematic post which the film hangs its hat on is more how life still continues on in the midst of war. Family drama, romantic trifles, and chronic cases of self-doubt and fears of inadequacy don’t go away when the bombs start falling; in fact, they’re often amplified, yet we must live on regardless. Centering the story around the airheaded but well-meaning Suzu as she grows up, gets married off, and tries to make the best of her life under the shadow of war grounds the film in an immense sense of pathos as we de…

Every war is fought on the battlefield of subjectivity. Keeping that flawed ethical bias at its core, In This Corner of the World is more than a movie; it becomes a meditation on survival and the quiet psychological violence of war. Despite being set amid the deeply hostile and malignant horrors of WWII, the movie takes a different route compared to works set in the same time period, like Grave of the Fireflies. Instead of being about overt tragedy upfront, it chooses intimacy and explores how people psychologically adapt to horror. War here is not the story itself; it is the pressure that reshapes human behavior, identity, and social ritual.
Ideologically, the film echoes ideas similar to those discussed by Vladimir Lenin, particularly the concept that social chauvinism emerges when ca…

If you have the chance to watch the extended 2-hour 48-minute version, please do so. It completely transforms the movie, adding depth to the protagonist and highlighting a key character whose presence is crucial to the story. Many moments that felt incomplete in the shorter version now have proper context, making the emotional weight of the film much stronger.
I watched both versions, and after experiencing the extended cut, my rating went from an 8 to a 10. The additional scenes provide a richer understanding of the relationships, struggles, and emotions that define Suzu’s journey. It’s not just about war; it’s about life, loss, and resilience.
A truly beautiful and heartfelt film that deserves to be seen in its full form.💖.

I went to watch this movie without knowing anything about it, when I realized it was about war, I started to feel sad....... And really, it is very sad, but at the same time it is comforting, all the characters are captivating in one way or another. The story reminded me a little of Only Yesterday (Omoide Poro Poro) because it shows the point of view of an ordinary person and still remains interesting and deep.
I almost cried a couple of times, but I enjoyed watching it.

The suffering of being an innocent bystander in a country that loses a war is immesurable. All that sacrifice and pain. All those lives wasted for someone elses ambition. The enemies in war are very few compared to the many times more that get labeled as such. To fight through all that, to sacrifice so much and find nothing awaiting you at the end. In This Corner of the World is a somber reminder of how much is given on both sides of conflict. Evil only lives in those with the power to stop it and choose not to, before it's too late. Good only resides in those with the power to grasp what really matters.

I think what describes "In this corner of the world" best is: being in the eye of the storm. It is somewhat calm and relaxing, has many slice of life moments and the main protagonist Suzu tries to be happy and joyful despite her situation, but there is the anticipation of the worst, yet to come. There are many undertones in this movies and things unspoken, things that are only slightly hinted at, things that later forgotten, because it would be too cruel to be reminded of them, to be reminded what has been lost and what could have been. The movie reaches deep into the dark abyss containing the horrors of war, at least if you catch up to its drift, while still having heart felt moments giving a tiny glimpse of hope and joy. I think it’s the best anti-war movie I have watched in a long time.…

In This Corner of the World is an anime movie you do not come across often nowadays. It blends a slightly ghibli style with a more mature approach yet it is neither dark nor overly idealistic. It's a story that could have easily been live action but in using animation we are invited to live with the main character and her feelings. It's very character driven in that sense and I'm sure we all know someone like the main character honestly. She is very forgetful and has her head in the clouds, which is perhaps what makes her charming. Nevertheless, the story does not shy away from certain topics that are uncomfortable pertaining to her personality to an extent and also arranged marriage and the atrocities of war. I think it is quite realistic in the sense that it portrays these topics without…

I went into this excited about watching a historical work, all the character nuances and settings really piqued my interest. The animation was stunning and art direction fitted in really nicely; but the scripting was just completely off. Some nice touches included joining in the Hiroshima explosions to give depth to how powerful the A-Bombs were in diameter.
But characters motivations were all over the place, things were explained but never shown or whole characters just sorta disappeared from the movie halfway through never to be heard from again. A particularly heart wrenching decision was the mother who lost her daughter to bombing, only to then have the daughter magically almost replaced by an orphan from Hiroshima brought back by the protaganists. This is never elaborated on or expla…

Such a great movie. Read some of the reviews and was surprised that some people felt disconnected with the main character or couldn't get emotionally involved in the movie, especially in the "second half" of the movie. The character design, pacing, and actions are very close to what one expects in reality, and when things go really south you can feel how surreal the events occuring are, and how they changed people.
In this regard I find the movie to be just mind blowing.
I wasn't expecting any character development, or at least nothing out of character, where everyone keeps their warm hearted attitude. especially the main character. Won't add much to this, other than being grateful that, in this sense, this was not a Ghibli movie.
The way the main character thinks sometimes is just unexpe…

If you don't like slice of life, don't watch this move. If you do, than I'm sure you will love it.
I do have a warning though for people looking for a wholesome film, it does get a bit graphic at the end of the film and very sad, so as much as the beginning is wholesome please be careful is that sorta thing triggers you or something.
Story: 8/10
Characters are all pretty likeable, story is slow paced, tho it feels a bit rushed at the end and can get confusing at times. It's cute but gets bittersweet and sad. but overall the story is nice and very slice of life.
Art: 9/10
The visials making me feel like I'm watching Suzu's life through her own art.
Sound: 7/10
I'll be honest i dont really remember any of the background music etc, but when there was some stuff playing it fit in with…

The length of this movie and the lack of volatility in the first half of the plot would make people feel boring. To me, this set is more like a documentary film than a movie. There is no romance in this set. Or a revenge that shakes people's hearts. Each character feels ordinary. Just some normal people with a lot of regrets for their actions. This to me shows a flawed beauty which makes this show grow so much more on me. Because they are some normal people that you might meet in your daily life. The peaceful daily life in the first half of the plot seems nothing special, but when war comes, the ordinary daily life seems like a extravagant. But this drama didn't stop with a melancholy. Instead it is promoting a positive thinking, highlighting the importance of anti-war with the cruelty of…

Nobody deserves the atomic bomb. A weapon of unimaginable grief, and terror over billions, claimer of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.
In This Corner of the World is a beautiful movie based around the normalities of the Japanese lives pre-war, the innocence of the normal human, the beauty in peace and youth, and the irreplaceable connection of family and childhood friends. This movie uses symbolism to represent a lot of this, the waves of the ocean like white rabbits crossing the surface, the loss of a close one being rough, chaotic, and broken, unforgettable and unforgivable, the pain lingers on the soul, mind, and body, never to be healed, white lines on a blackboard never to be erased.
The movie builds a connection over specific characters during its 12 year long timeline, you…

Having just watched it, I find it a little hard to gather my thoughts and put them into words.
I went into Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni expecting a tear-jerking WWII movie littered with tragedies. While it did make me weep and made my heart grow heavy -- it also made me smile and even laugh through the tears.
It beautifully showcases an ordinary girl's life that gets changed by time and war.
The art of this movie goes very well with the story -- certain scenes left me in complete awe.
I love how the story ties up towards the end; it left me with a feeling of warmth.

Japan gets BTFO by a real superpower. It was cathartic to watch the suffering of these people after the horrendous transgressions against my home!!! Very good movie. It even had some cute lolis! I would have rated it 11 out of 10 if only I could watch them kneel down and kiss the toes of the US of A, though they basically did. If they ever make any continuation I would personally love to see Emperor Hirohito prostrate himself before Truman-sama with an explicit admission of all of the country's war crimes. The artstyle is very good. I would like to sex every single character including the hairy wandering child abductor at the start of the movie.
SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!
I also have a particular fondness of certain physical states of dismemberment as portrayed in this beautiful artistic…

I watched the animated movie Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, also known as In this Corner of the World. Here are my thoughts:
The story takes place in the 1940s of WW2-era Japan. It is mainly told through the eyes of civilians.
Even though it was released in 2016, the movie feels very old. Everything about it: the art style, the music, the voice acting, the story; they are all reminiscent of early anime productions from the late 20th century. I personally am not a huge fan of anime from this era (speaking VERY generally), so I might be unfairly biased towards this movie. Furthermore, I usually shy away from WW2-era fiction because of how I've seen it done ad nauseam in western media. So I might be biased in this respect as well, although the perspective of a Japanese citizen is relatively les…

Make sure you get real comfy watching this because you're defo gonna cry like a lil bich.
Kono sekai no katasumi ni is exactly what the title implies; it portrays the happenings of a specific set during the second world war. The anime is a magnifying glass and gives us an insight of what life was like during the time periods mentioned.
The story is based on real events that took place in Japan during the second world war. We the viewers see these events from the perspective of Suzu, a fictional character. The story uses both history and a variety of techniques to convey everything from emotions, events et cetera at a modest pace with variations in it where necessary for information to really sink in- especially emotions.
The characters presented are genuine in that there's no forced ani…

It's surprising just to imagine that these guys found ways to stay positive during the war, and here I am, sad after watching this movie. It's hard for me to even gather my thoughts right now to write this review.
Anyways, the best thing I liked about it is that amidst all of the horror of war, the determination of the main character as she fights unimaginable harrowing moments brings out the best beauty. Yes, it did remind me of Grave of the fireflies, but both of them are totally different in their own ways and there is no way one can compare both of them. While GOTF shows the hell-like misery, this one gives us more reasons to hope and dream.
It's powerful and delicate at the same time. It starts a little slow, but it compensates with the beautifully executed second half. I was really…

Story/Plot 7/10 - "A spirited 18-year-old woman is married off to a man she barely knows as she combats the daily struggles of living in Hiroshima during World War II." - Google (I'm too lazy at the moment to write the plot myself.)
Art/Animation 8/10 - While the art style wasn't what I was typically used to, I feel like it was very fitting for the tone of the movie, same with the colors. And the animation was (For the most part,) smooth and fluent!
Sound 6/10 - The sound was typical. But the voice actors in English weren't that good, the Japanese were better but it was still kinda weird.
Characters/Personalities 7/10 - I liked the personality of each character to an extent! Suzu's personality was probably my favorite though. The way that she was fearless even if s…

I have mixed feelings about this movie, first of all, I enjoyed it, but I was extremely confused as to what did this film was trying to make me feel, in the moments of shock the film almost wanted me to just ignore them, kind of like the protagonist, but then like 5 minutes later something more horrible happens and everyone is like "oh well that happend", and moved on with their lives, if the point of this movie was to make me, the audience, feel the consequences of war like something so mundane, then I guess they succeded, but I it has pretty colors, so I forgive them, 8/10
