Ok, so this is kind of a mixed bag (I'm still recommending it, hence the "recommended" tag). If you don't feel like reading too much: this is very close to Ascendance of a Bookworm levels of good as far as the story, characters, and world building are concerned. If you've read Bookworm you know how insanely high that bar is. It's a slow burn, but definitely give it a chance.
The good:
- The setting is spectacularly good. The story takes its time to build the world properly. It's a fantastical world in that there are fantastical beasts in it, but other than that it's a medieval setting with all that entails.
- The characters and their relationships are equally as good as the setting. The important characters are developed very, very well. Their individual arcs happen naturally as the show…

Seirei no Moribito was a really fulfilling experience so i embarked on a journey to look for more fantasy shows similar to it and came across Kemono no souja Erin and both are by Uehashi Nahoko. My expectations wee high, and it delivered masterfully though i do not hold the view like this is the greatest thing ever i must say Erin provided for a really fruitful experience.
STORY
Going into this one i did have a hunch on what type of story it may be and mostly i was right. Detailed world, deeply emotional storyline, political tussle, supernatural element etc. But Erin also has a predominantly calm atmosphere to most of its episodes. It has a slice of inclination where we see the main character Erin do what she loves, that is curiosity to learn and know more, and later on a special fixation…

A coming-of-age story set in a rich low-fantasy world. If you think this show has "filler" you have cottonballs for brains; apart from one episode (you'll know which), everything in Beast Tamer Erin helps develop Erin's growth and development as a person, which is the real story. About a third of the way into the show a political plotline is introduced that occasionally intersects with Erin's and eventually merges, but the intrigue and political drama components of this show are honestly pretty simplistic and not nearly as beguiling as the world that's shown from Erin's limited point of view. I know this is an adaptation but the story could've honestly done with way more mystery and fewer answers. The straightforward storytelling (especially towards the end) is one of the ways in which Eri…

I watched this show with absolutely no intent of writing a review on it. Those of you who know the meta of MAL reviews know that writing a review of a relatively unknown show from over 10 years ago is a great way to make sure nobody reads it. But as Kemono no Souja Erin unfolded over its 50-episode journey, my thoughts on it were too scattered and my feelings too complex to boil down into a simple number or even a short note under the entry on my list page. This is an anime that deserves attention and discussion; even if no one reads this review, I need to write it for my own sake.
First, some backstory on how I stumbled upon this show. A long time ago on 4chan there was a daring individual who decided to compile a list of the “best-written” anime from the /a/ board and then post it on /l…

I stumbled upon Beast Player Erin in search of anime with good world building like Slime Reincarnation and Ascendance of a Bookworm.
There are already many great reviews so the purpose of my review here is to provide expectations to potential viewers of this show:
Each episode will consist of:
10% mini music videos with overly played songs,
40% overly used flashbacks,
50% actual scenes that progress the story.
This series did not have to be 50 episodes long as a great much of it was just filler content. Frustratingly much of that wasted time used for flashback filler could have been used more meaningfully such as providing a more conclusive ending as it felt rushed despite all the time it had for its 50 episode run.
If you're going to give this show a chance keep in mind it does not…

The first time I watched erin 6 years ago I gave it a 10/10 but I just finished rewatching it and my score for it now is a 7 let me explain. I'd say this review is pretty much completely spoiler free so without further ado let's get on with it.
Story 7/10
I like the story but there is a LOT of recap and fluff throughout the series. I feel erin could benefit from being 40 maybe even 30 episodes instead of 50 and cutting out all the unnecessary parts of the show. I swear there are scenes you see over a dozen times in the show which accomplishes nothing but filling air time.
Art 7/10
I'm not really one for talking at length about art in anime but here we go. The art was fine. I love the artstyle of erin. Could do without the hideous cgi though.
Sound/music 7/10
The sound was also fine. I a…

First let me say its been well over 10 years since I first watched Kemono no Souja Erin and I still regard it as one of my favorite anime to this day. The story stuck with me for such a long time that even now years later I find myself looking for similar anime. Has great character development and I really enjoy how they balance slice of life with tragedy and just a nice pinch of action. If you are looking for a nice well rounded anime that will lift your heart and also leave you rushing to watch the next episode this is perfect. Overall this is an original anime worth watching if you like fantasy.

Starting off, the show having 50 episodes is a very positive thing for it. The show spends a lot of time world building, everything from the various plants used for poisons or medicines to the fantastical creature. The creatures specifically get plenty of development, with the viewer being taken for a very enjoyable ride of emotions regarding them, more so in regards to the Touda than the Beast-Lords but I'll leave out those spoilers. The plants getting world building attention is a nice surprise. While of course many plants only occur once solely to show the main character learning throughout the show, some are used multiple times and even the viewer can come to learn the effects of them on both human and creatures.
The show has a few time skips which can be a turn off to some people, ho…

Yep...the time has come. I've been gradually watching this series for about 3 months and now it's finally time to give my thoughts on it. This isn't going to be easy. On the one hand, I really love this series. I added it to my extended favorites without hesitation. The first 20 episodes are absolutely amazing! It's still the best anime adaptation of a YA novel that I've seen. I think it's quite a bit better than Moribito or Shinsekai Yori.
However, Erin also has some issues. From roughly episodes 20-40, the anime just pulls the drag chute and becomes unbearably slow. The 2 god awful comic relief characters get a full episode. We get I believe 3 flashback episodes. There's a mini arc where this girl comes to Erin's school and is jealous of her, which feels like the most pointless of fille…

Kemono no Souja Erin isn't like one of our normal anime its a fantastic piece of work I personally loved it, it was emotional it had so many aspects and genres there where bits of romance that was obviously hard to miss although this is meant to be a child's anime I believe many adults would love it. It wasn't like a normal anime she actually grew through out the episodes and it was amazing the way we could go along her journey the ending was very nicely done even though it makes us yearn for more all i can really say right now is that its bewildering in so many different ways it will make you cry in a one bit and soon you will be crying and laughing at the same time, you WILL go through an emotional roller coaster and probably cry for hours when you found out you finished it but if you ar…

Haven't felt this good after finishing a show in a while.
The entire story was incredibly saddening, but also very warm. You get a lot of information, so much so that I'm not left with any questions, but just content. Each character was unique and their back stories even more.
Amazing art and designs are used to tell the story in a lot of scenes and was very enjoyable to watch and figure out what it all meant. The soundtrack basically gave me life. They used the same few songs, but changed the arrangement to fit the mood which was really nice and gave all the right feels.
The only problem I had, which was hardly a problem was the amount of flashback scenes - which would have been fine actually if I hadn't binge watched it. So I did find myself fast forwarding a minute or two here and t…

Kemono no Souja Erin was an absolutely amazing anime,
I finished it in 2 days which is my record for a series with over 24 episodes as i am generally busy but this anime sucked me in and I could not leave it alone Erin was such an amazing character and I can tell the people behind the scenes put a lot of effort in to her character.
The reason I only gave the story and art nine's instead of ten's is simple, the story sucked you in but of course every one has different views I personally loved the idea of the story but there were certain parts I would have changed to suit me and my preferences. (P.S just note that i have never given any anime a 10).
And my reason for the score I gave the art is the same although I did love most of the designs.
Overall I loved it apart from the fact that…

I would recommend this anime anyone who is looking for break from cute moe harem anime and watch a anime with excellent story and some tearful scenes. At first, the story can be repetitive and slow as it focuses on developing Erin's personality, her interactions with the other characters and world building. However, the story gets better further on as you slowly watch a young curious Erin learn and grow into a caring, beautiful animal loving girl which you will get attached to at the end of the anime.
The anime was originally for children and may at first glance may seem boring to watch. However, the show explores some dark themes such as death, war, and animal cruelty, which deepens the story and develop the character of Erin as she overcomes the issues.
The art is normal but slightly b…

Fantasy anime have long been characterized by an abundance of wicked sorcerers and cute cat girls, but Kemono no Souja Erin features none of these tropes, instead drawing on elements from classic fairy tales. Its innocuous artstyle, which mimics the illustrations of Aesop’s picture books, exhibits an aura foreign to most contemporary anime fans. Coupled with its unremarkable first episode, the show is easy to dismiss as a childish folktale not worth the trouble.
This is a gross misconception. What begins as an everyday tale about a naive young girl and her mother gradually evolves into a profound saga of morality, politics, and self-discovery.
For all its deceivingly harmless visuals, Kemono no Souja Erin hides one of the most well-presented and mature stories. People die, political intr…

Kemono No Souja Erin is a wonderful tale of friendship, love, war, fate and philosophy, and a very special and beautiful one.
Erin, the main character of the series, is quite obviously the key not to the whole plot but to its end. But, that is only due to her evolution throughout the series, as she makes her way through life, facing hardships, sometimes being unable to overcome them, having painful experiences but continuing to live on. In that sense, Erin is a fully human and relatable character, far from what you would expect from such a special girl.
The series conveys a message of freedom and kindness between man and beast. Being born in a village of Touda breeders, Erin learns from her mother Soyon that she would prefer to raise those trained-for-war beasts as if they were in the w…

Horrible Recycling of Everything, draggin out the story for too long: -11/-10 Fanservice: 2/10 (this is a good thing)
Very good series, with a lot of wasted potential, that has some of the best worldbuilduing in anime. Deserves to be more popular, but can also be infuriating. A show for old and young, except for maybe small children, who could get terrified, at some of the more violent scenes.
It is worth noting, that the series is an adaption, of a series of novels, by Nahoko Uehashi and while I have not read them, I have been told, that the anime differs significantly from the source material, so take that as you li…

Kemono no Souja Erin is a good choice for you if you want to watch a series aimed for children that tries to build a fantasy world that has its own depth and use that to ingrain something into your moral fiber. However this immediately becomes a terrible choice if you can't handle its slow pace and its very poor choices in the sound department, which I'll get on later. And it's also an obviously terrible choice if you don't expect it to treat you like a dumb kid who needs flashbacks every few episodes to be remembered what happens and don't like being to be expected to sing along the songs just because there are lyrics on screen.
Let me get out of the way the things the series does right before I start complaining. The most impressive aspect I found in the series is the world building. Wh…

"Kemono no souja no erin"
it has message that animal is tool by human.
it has sciene and art to identify "problem, risk" (if u study about public health, maybe u can see how we should do in society like erin).
There's relation about parent n their daughter (coz we speak about erin, a girl who aim to be like her mom or we speak about ial who always remember his parent n still has "memento").
There's deep feel when there's separating parent n daughter.
I rarely see such as message that hard effort with good motif become background is so easy to get me in. (1) Rule (something like agreement which is can be sen or cannt be seen) is made to prevent bad doings that base on past time has already been done. Rule also something that exist in society but we dont know it's origin n it's goal (someti…

This anime is kind of slow paced with very classic characters. The story is "ok" but it doesnt really blow you away. (like I didnt get hooked) There are some moments however that are really good, and some episodes where they gather a lot cool moments. For a fantasy world, its really down to earth and limited in what you can expect, and kind of predicatble as well. Too slow for my taste, ok to watch if you do something else and ok to watch with kids as well, not really the typical modern day anime. I guess worth to watch if you can enjoy that sort of thing

There is something almost Ghibli-esque about Kemono no Souja Erin, in its music choices and leisurely pace. It's all well-done, but is a seriously slow burn: I lost stamina towards the end, which is why my rating isn't as high as it might have been. That being said, this series is neat and well thought-out, simple to follow (too simple at times! It's clear this was meant for a younger audience) but no Juuni Kokuki, which is what I was hungering for at the end of my Twelve Kingdoms binge. Erin is the kind of protagonist you never feel bad watching or empathising with, because her growing pains are entirely reasonable and unselfish, making Kemono no Souja Erin an easy, enjoyable watch. This is the epitome of a lengthy, feel-good anime, though I only wish it had left me with a slightly strong…
