I've seen hundreds of anime, some of them I haven't even put them on MAL, but I can 100% without a single doubt say that Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is not only the greatest anime of all time, but the greatest piece of fiction I have ever seen. I have read books, seen movies, TV shows, cartoons, and other types of media, but there is nothing like this out there, I don't want to go too in depth with this as anything I would say about the plot would ruin the watch, but the characters (especially Yang Wen Li) are beautifully written, the music, the animation, the world building, everything about is beautiful and perfect. Just WATCH IT. You will not regret it, I would also recommend watching it slowly, not rushing it and enjoying it.
10/10 Masterpiece.

Without a doubt an absolute masterpiece of not only sci-fi, but TV and Animation as a whole. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a narrative twist and turn across 110 'every-minute-counts' episodes of flawless mind games, tactics, and fantastic outlooks on politics and war which are still relevant over 30 years later. Incredibly well written with likeable and fascinating characters which feel human, in both their flaws and their personalities, with the side cast feeling just as authentic as the main 2 characters. With no clear distinction between who the 'Good Guy' and the bad guy is, the viewer is forced to decide for themselves which adds a layer of complexity and moral dilemma. While this series may be a turn off for people who are put off by old animation and a lack of dub,i can definitel…

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the greatest narrative ever put to the small screen.
I'm aware of the perceived audacity of this claim. I Claudius, Twin Peaks, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the Sopranos deserve their flowers, too. There are myriad television shows that have been more influential, and a few of them are masterpieces in their own right. So what, might you ask, distinguishes this (relatively) obscure Japanese space opera?
Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that any of the previously listed narratives could have been narratively condensed and shot in film format, and have still retained what made them special. Sure, they may not have possessed the same degree of depth, character development, or content, but it's easy to conceive of a four hour epic chronicling the domestic i…

One of the greatest science fiction because it doesn't just entertain, it educates. It leaves you questioning your own beliefs about governance, freedom, and the price of peace. There are no villains, only architects of different futures. It’s a series where you don’t root for a side you mourn the fact that two brilliant, honorable men are forced by history to destroy one another.
logh treats war with a brutal, tactical intelligence. It doesn't rely on powerups or shonen tropes. The animation isn't just about flashy effects it’s about the deliberate, cinematic weight of 1980s hand-drawn art that feels more real and textured than the polished digital look of current new gens.

Legends of the Galactic Heroes is a true hidden gem, a masterpiece, a work of art so great, with such a vivid example of how humanity would be in space, it might be what it looks like in the future. No race, no ethnicity, no religion, no nationality, just differences over what system people should be governed by. The greatest anime and space fiction ever created that no one knows about. If the governments did, it would be banned.
The anime criticises and challenges the status quo of how governments rule with the question of "Is the best autocracy better than the worst democracy?", by introducing two factions: the Free Planets Alliance that is based off American democracy and The Galactic Empire which is first based off a mix between an aristocratic Prussian monarchy, an absolutist French m…

"A lost piece of art "
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is one of the most ambitious works I've seen after battleship yamato in terms of decisive politics and hunger to improve itself . The most negative point of this show is most positive for me , people usually criticize or drop this in initial phases due to complain of slow pacing .
In my my opinion slow paced shows with 100+ eps are perfect, they allow the plot to mature naturally .Events rarely unfold in a single episode. Some barely move the plot, and focus on building characters and the universe. There's no immediate pay-off, and you might be underwhelmed by the time the wheels start rolling.
This is also a very accurate adaptation, which follows the original story almost word for word.
Fitiing for a story of such grand scope, there…

This is a space opera in which admirals critique each others' poetry in the midst of battle. And when I say "space opera" I mean it in the purest, most literal sense. Hardly any other show seems fitting to use that label after you've seen this.
If you're considering watching this, I want you to know one thing above all. Before you do anything else, do yourself a favor and go watch "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars."

It's only an hour. If you like it, you'll almost certainly like this show, and if you don't, you probably won't.
So much has been said about this show, and I could say so much more. There is so, so much going on. This is about Democracy vs. Authoritarianism. It's about Enlightenment and the A…

In the plethora of Space operas released to this day LOGH stands out as behemoth of a piece that carries Its characters through the shortcomings & light of 2 Political Systems, Namely: Democracy & Autocracy, bolstering a gargantuan scaling along with its profound writing: It is sure to leave the watchers in awe, while they bask in a collection of memorable soundtracks from classics to originals; With that being said, we shall move into the very details that make it a must-watch
1) Scaling
It goes without saying, that scaling is the pivot that makes LOGH great, that opinion is righteous, regardless of the story the scaling of battles, battleships, personnel is what makes it different, in the sense; there's a variety in events that makes it unpredictable, but it does not steer too far away…

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a niche anime, but it's praised by that niche... does it deserve it? I raise my hands and say "absolute cinema."
It's certainly not an anime everyone will enjoy, and I can understand why; who would want to sit through 110 episodes of people sitting behind a table discussing politics, military strategy, and ethical issues?
Yet no dialogue is there by chance, and each one was thoughtfully created, because it's through the voices of the various characters that the author manages to engage in interesting and complex reflections, often using the voices of the characters, especially Yang Wen-Li and Julian, to express his own thoughts.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes criticizes war in all of its aspects and doesn't shy away from showing its catastrophic effects. It…

This show is undoubtedly a masterpiece in its own way, its rich in character building, world building, plot, and so much more, there's quite a lot going on here, and its honestly on a whole different scale then many other shows avant grande style, buuttt, it has somewhat of a unique problem in that it starts off really strong, but degenerates into just plot. Like by episode 80 and especially 90 the show is such a drag, its just plot battles and plot intrigue and the animators appear to not know how to create suspense and tension any more, and it ends out as super boring. Like this show is so weird in that it excels in many of the areas most shows are weak in and has the makings of something remarkable, its quite amazing at the beginning to, but that its a little unwatchable because of just…

It's been a while since I completed this, so my thoughts are a bit unorganized.
LOGH is not all that. Another reviewer said that it's overrated on this site, and I agree wholeheartedly--but also like that same reviewer said, that doesn't mean it's not fantastic. Art's great---beautiful ships in space, and I like the character designs, explosions, and occasional gore. The use of classical music is also really great, and it sets the tone of battles, as well as matching the general theming of this show being a war epic.
The battles are the best part. The war strategy is much easier to follow than other shows, and I could physically see *why* characters are smarter than others, instead of just "he blew that ship up pretty good." LOGH takes into detail everything---rations, placements on th…

The ending line of the series is "The legend ends and history begins." After watching the whole 110 episode run (with all the gaiden side stories of course!), you will read that line and feel as though there has never been a better ending to a series.
There's no getting around it. The series is long. It's not exactly linear -- many of the gaiden happen in or before the main run of the series. And it's told more like an oral history than it is a story. And, really, that's because it _is_ a history. You'll get to know the characters, but the focus is this intractable dance between three intergalactic civilizations.
The term "space opera" has never been better applied to a work. This can be long, boring, and incomprehensible to some people. It can be rich, deeply engaging, and thoughtful to…

Does this show live up to the praise it gets? Absolutely! Is it for everboy? No, and that is alright. I'll just try to sell you this show based on the themes and ideas it explores because this show is far more focused on them than anything else, which is the main thing that makes this show special.
In humanity's distant future, two interstellar states—the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, respectively.
It offers rich commentary on war, politics, government, history, societal issues, etc.; the list goes on and on. It would take too long to explain th…

This series has been slowly smoldering in my ptw list for a long time, and not just because it’s 110 episodes long. There are many series of that length and far longer that are roller coaster rides full of rises and falls in pacing, and while this certainly does have those kinds of pacing differentials, it’s more of an exercise in patience than most. Frankly, in a series full of incredibly choreographed and carefully articulated space battles animated with far more care and attention than many of its contemporaries, LotGH is not about those space battles.
Well… it necessarily is to some degree. The series’ battles often feel sterile and removed. We watch a variety of ship models undergo explosive decompression in space, see the same laser beam patterns criss-cross a battlefield, observe l…

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the most subjective anime you'll ever find due to it's very unique story, making you either love it or hate it.
The best parts of this series are it's politics, war and realism. For politics this is the only anime to go into so much depth and I absolutely loved it, I never know why aniems don't do this even animes with politics in them such as One Piece never go in depth and only hint at it but LOGH does it so insanely well it's amazing and comparable to real life. For war again LOGH does it perfectly with the use of strategies, moral, command, corruption and more the only bad thing about it is in season 3 and 4 there was alot of plot armour making the admirals make dumb decisions for the sake of plot. Finally realism it is the most realistic anime and the…

The story revolves around the centuries-long conflict between two interstellar nations: the autocratic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance. At its core, the series is a deep exploration of politics, war, philosophy, and the human condition, told through the lives of its two central figures: Reinhard von Lohengramm, a brilliant and ambitious imperial admiral, and Yang Wen-li, a reluctant but genius tactician fighting for the Alliance
Character Development
The characters are the heart of the story. Reinhard and Yang are polar opposites in their motivations and ideals, yet both are compelling and multi-dimensional. Reinhard’s ambition to reform the Empire contrasts with Yang’s desire for peace and his skepticism of democracy. The supporting cast is equally well-developed…

Without trying to sound pretentious, this show reaches the rare achievement of making you feel as though you are truly watching history unfold (with zero subtlety that this is the intended goal). Does it do so with some unrealistically romantic portraits of war and politics? Sure, but don't all history books to some extent? When people talk about the scale of this series, it isn't necessarily about the scale of the war itself, It's about the pure amount of unique perspectives, conspiracies, opinions, strategies, that are crammed in here while not sacrificing the human emotional perspectives from the numerous characters' personal stories reacting to the events.
To those looking for edge-of-your-seat anime actions scenes: abandon hope all ye who enter! While I do wholeheartedly recommend t…

My favourite stories tend to be those of a sprawling nature with all-encompassing scope and an expansive cast of characters. This is obviously harder to write but, when executed well, it can achieve such profound narrative heights. In this way, Legend of the Galactic Heroes excels more than any anime I've seen.
"Shakespearean" would be an adequate way to describe it, not just in its flair, but its characters and the way their stories unfold. There are over 100 named characters throughout the entire series that I could meaningfully comment on, and the best of those are engaging in ways that go beyond feeling merely "real" or "human". Our two centrepieces, Yang Wen-li and Reinhard von Lohengramm, apart from being endlessly compelling to watch, are larger-than-life and stand for all of democ…

My friend and I have partially revised this masterpiece anew and we want to say that this is a real narrative treasure. I really began to love him more from the second viewing, despite the boring animation in 3 frames. thanks to the narrative and the plot, it's really interesting for you to watch the static ships on the background.
"Heroes of the Galaxy" is an epic that is admired for its depth, complexity of the plot and character development. This anime series will be interesting not only for science fiction fans, but also for those who are looking for philosophical reflections and an exciting story.
The plot tells about a centuries-old war between two major space states: the Galactic Reich and the Alliance of Free Planets. In the foreground of events are two outstanding commanders: Re…

Whenever one frequents the MAL website, one anime series that has consistently ranked this high for the past decade is Legend of the Galactic Heroes. When looking from the outside one does not understand why that is the case. Okay, it's an anime classic, but so is Bebop, so is Trigun, so is Berserk and Death Note. Why don't they rank as high, one might ask? Perhaps this could be because the aforementioned shows are a lot more accessible to the public and in my opinion: their stories do not have 'that' something going on that everyone; despite of background or political ideology; can necessarily relate to. What I mean by that is: Firstly, they were easier to access by the people, they had Dubs, they were aired on Toonami and spread before online streaming. This means more people got to watc…
