Let's Play: Quest-darake no My Life

Introduction

Through her college years, Sam Young devoted hours upon hours to developing her adventure puzzle game, Ruminate. Despite being very ill as a child, Sam aspires to become a true game developer. But when her favorite gaming streamer, Marshall Law, tests the game, he horribly misunderstands it and declares it the worst game he has ever played. As a result, his fans bombard Sam's game with negative reviews, jeopardizing her dreams. To make matters worse, Marshall moves in as Sam's new neighbor, unaware that she is the developer he so harshly criticized. Although he appears caring and kind, she struggles to befriend him. Before she can develop her second game, Evermake, Sam must first figure out a way to repair her ruined reputation. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Great adaption of Mongie's Let's Play webcomic originally posted on the webcomic platform WEBTOON. The webcomic was continuously ranked in the Top 3 on WEBTOON and for a good reason. It's fun, light-hearted with relatable characters and down-to-Earth. It's also a story about adults and it hits all the right buttons for a millennial reader. Why this anime is a big deal? Firstly, it aired on Fuji TV, a former host of Noitamina where unusual (but almost always good) titles aired for over two decades. If you ever watched Noitamina titles your taste in anime should have improved drastically. Some of the more popular titles include Honey & Clover, Mononoke, Shiki, Katanagatari, Banana Fish and others. The focus was always on a good story and characters more so than sakuga and pretty colours al…

It is honestly probably a little unfair of me to write a review for this show because “Let’s Play” was very much so a hate watch for me. My best friend and I have read every chapter of the web comic (out of pure curiosity; not because we think it’s any good), and when we found out “Let’s Play” was getting an anime, we screamed. The “Let’s Play” anime somehow takes all the most insane parts of the web comic and throws them at you at a much faster pace. I wasn’t sure if we’d make it to the climax with Link, and boy howdy, we did and it felt like getting hit by a car (though reading it for the first time in the web comic felt like getting hit by a truck). On the other side of that same coin, however, we got a bit more of Charles earlier on, which I loved. Those last 30 seconds took me TF ou…

Honestly, at first, Let's Play seemed like it was going to be boring, wish-fulfillment garbage to me. But I stuck with it purely for the novelty of watching an anime set in my hometown, and it gets so much better over the course of the series. First, there is legitimately some lazy writing in Let's Play, and you kind of have to power through that to get to the good stuff. But I think it's worth it. It's honestly kind of refreshing as far as anime romances go. There's more depth to the characters than is apparent at first, subjects like domestic violence and infidelity are brought up and handled with some sensitivity, and there's a number of situations that get resolved by characters talking to each other like adults. It's nice. The wish fulfillment element is there throughout the series,…

At the beginning, it was pretty interesting, and definitely quite inspiring too. It follows a girl named Sam who struggles with anxiety and self-doubt, and you basically watch her slowly build confidence over the episodes. That character growth definitely felt genuine and also relatable, and it kept me invested quite early on. Near the end of the anime is where it really lost me though. The middle to end felt incomplete, and unfortunately, rushed as well. There wasn't much closure, and it kind of just... stops, with a rough explanation of what Sam continued on doing instead of actually seeing her achieve her dreams slowly throughout each episodes. The anime feels like it's constantly building up something big, only for it to not really feel that big. Also, this anime is labeled as "roma…

This anime isn't a romance. Only one relationship is really explored in any detail and it doesn't go anywhere, which is fine, but frustrating if you, like me, were excited for romance. Each character is so unbearably straightforward, it really irks me. In the intro you see a large and diverse set of characters, but many of them have no impact on the story at all. I know it's only 12 episodes long, and was probably produced to drive interest in the web novel, but the viewer is never offered even a glimpse into so many characters. Not like I expect them to be super fleshed out, they're all caricatures of whatever "flaw" they have. Depression, anxiety, ptsd. And not once is the focus actually on improving mental health. The message is try harder, or rest more. Not bad advice for a lot o…

If Ally McBeal was crossed with Ugly Betty and 10x more neurotic, then surrounded by friends that all had issues that a therapist could retire on. You can smell the blue hair dye that the writer uses from here. Every character is a neurotic mess that has undergone Clockwork Orange levels of sensitivity training. The women are all generic stereotypical "independent strong woman" without any actual depth. The men are quite literally the compliment meme of calling HR. The handsome ones are always doing something good and the ugly ones are bumbling fools. The animation is average and the voice acting for most of the characters is decent enough.

Is it good or is it nostalgia? Out of all the media formats that I expected to see Let's Play adapted to, anime was almost dead last on the list. It was more realistic to get this webtoon transformed into some sort of car racing game than an anime in my opinion, but here we are. I have been a day-oner for the webtoon. I remember tuning in every week, even paying money to get the latest chapters as soon as possible. For me, Let's Play is not only a webtoon, it was something very near and dear to my heart, something that was the same in a period of my life when everything was changing so fast and I felt as if I couldn't keep up. I really lament the fate of this webtoon and I didn't really like the direction it was headed to. By the time the anime aired, I was pretty much over it, so I wasn…

This isn't anime. Okay, technically it is, but it's based on a Western source. Which sums up everything that's wrong with this story. The characters are very unsympathetic, stereotypical, and each must have their own issues. A terribly harsh boss who means well. And has never heard of the phrase "professional boundaries." A handsome guy who plays sports and is very protective, a beautiful model, etc. After a very bad start, the plot improves a little, but not by much. Many situations are too coincidental, or rather, they are artificially created by the author to happen. A coincidental meeting in a dog park, a coincidence that two characters knew each other in the distant past. At the same time, the pace of the narrative suffers greatly towards the end, and the plot of one episode is st…

Since I read the webtoon for years and was a big fan, I’ll be comparing it to that as well. In the original, the story portrayed the everyday struggles, emotions, and relationships of adults in a very realistic way. In the anime, the character designs made them look too young and ordinary. The story could hav…

Lovehearts in the name and slightly misleading description aside this is actually a pretty great anime about adult-focused relationships (of all kinds), dealing with trauma/mental health and work-life balance. It's more slice of life than rom-com. The premise takes up the first two, and last two, episodes, but little more than that to be honest. The rest focuses on Sam's guild and workmates and their interactions, as well as Marshals life. Frankly, it's fantastic. It doesn't shy away from the realities of life but it doesn't get grim and depressing, the levity remains. It's akin to Horimiya in many aspects, which might be why I like it so much. Each character is well rounded and fun to watch, their interactions as established friends is really enjoyable and they each have their own depth.

Let’s Play is a story that orbits around the character, Sam, and her day-to-day adventures of hanging with her friends and gaming/game development. I was certain this story was going to be a fun new Romance with a splash of Reverse Harem...but boy...was I incredibly misinformed by the cover art for this and the summary. The romance in this story is minimal at best, and there is hardly one solid love interest, much less more than that. Upon completing this story, I had to sit with myself and think over: what is this story trying to tell us about Sam? What does it want us to take away as viewers? Is it about following your dreams? Is it about following your heart? Is it about learning to love yourself despite your flaws? While all of those themes are shown in fragments throughout this…

Well let's start with I like the character designs. Each character is distinct and unique and I don't have a hard time distinguishing characters from each other. I also love the depiction of unspoken emotions as monsters that are haunting the characters. Although there is an aspect of show rather than tell, that kind of makes this strange. But let me get to my issues with this series real quick. Issue number one it's hard to believe that Sam has such a low view of herself and her abilities despite the fact that she's an entire crew of people constantly telling her how wonderful she is. She's so good, she's so great, so wonderful at almost everything she tries and yet she still has a low opinion of herself. Maybe future episodes would make that make sense but for me right now it doesn't. Se…

With a current average score of around 6.72 on MyAnimeList, Let’s Play feels noticeably underrated. The series offers a character-focused story that places strong emphasis on personal growth and emotional development, which may not appeal to everyone, but works very well within its genre. One of the strongest aspects of the anime is the main character’s progression. The story carefully portrays her transition from a shy and insecure personality into someone more confident and self-aware. This development feels gradual and believable, rather than rushed, making it one of the most rewarding parts of the series. The emotional payoff toward the end is another highlight. The final episodes deliver strong emotional weight and clearly suggest that the story is far from complete. Ending the seas…

(Spanish review on my list) Slice-of-life stories with nods to video games... and that's it... nothing particularly noteworthy. The romance isn't anything special, the problems are pretty average, the animation isn't anything special either (though it doesn't really need it), and everything ends happily. I think it's an anime that tries to tell you to have self-love and confidence in what you do, to work hard, and everything will work out sooner or later... But with nods to video games and nothing really exciting... it's not bad, it's not unbearable to watch, it's not so awkward that it's embarrassing, but it's nothing special either. It's one of those anime that you'll forget over time.

After finishing this, I honestly found myself wondering what it was that initially drew me to the story. Let’s Play is adapted from an American webcomic, so hearing it would receive an anime adaptation came as a genuine surprise. The original comic went on a long hiatus due to concerns about its content not being appropriate for the platform on which it was published. Even so, I was pleased when it returned, as I had enjoyed it quite a bit when I first started reading. Unfortunately, that enjoyment did not carry over to the anime. The premise itself is not particularly novel. The protagonist is an adult woman who is extremely shy and anxious, yet highly talented as a video game developer. Her favorite video game streamer ends up moving into her apartment complex, but her excitement qui…

As someone who has read the webtoon from start to finish and enjoyed it very much, this felt very rushed. The animations were good, the plot stayed mostly the same but I felt the storyline was rushed the same way horimiya felt rushed. I will say that overall it stayed true to the Webtoon from what I remember. In my opinion, Link and Marshall's voice actors were not what I expected and it threw me off a little. The intro had introduced a lot of the characters by name but those characters had too little screen time for them to be name dropped in the intro sequence. I felt like a few things were missing and I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Overall I would say it is enjoyable but I would like to see them make another season, expand on the other characters, and personally i would like…

First things first, the songs are great, art style's good, and as far as the anime went (don't know about the original source, haven't seen it yet), it's more of an emotional drama, rather than romance. So, don't take me wrong, I put it in "mixed feeling" isn't because I don't recommend it, but, and it's a big but, I'm not sure everyone could enjoy it. Disclaimer first, I haven't quite look up about the origin of the story, all I know is that it's from a webtoon, and that's it. And, as another disclaimer, I'm not trying to be racist at all, it just happen to be something that must be described in the manner I will use. Now, from my first impression, way before i know that it's a webtoon adaptation, etc., the elements in the show are all over the place. Obviously, it's an anime, and it's…
