This was phenomenal and I wish that more people watch this.
The animation was stunning for it's time and the writing was incredible. The way the love triangle between Hikaru, Minmay, and Misa was very interesting and they all really good chemistry with each other. The voice acting was just something else and I may have shed a tear or two during a pivotal scene that I won't spoil here. The film perfectly balanced action with romance and that's something quite a bit of films don't really know how to do. The pacing was a bit slow at times, but it's still a near perfect film.
Screw Harmony Gold for preventing this film and the original Macross series from ever getting a proper release over here because this truly deserves to be seen more.

Macross: Do You Remember Love was the first Anime movie that I ever watched and it was all thanks to my friend and coworker, Ed, at the time. He had put together some VHS tapes of Anime for me and this was the first thing that was on one of the tapes. I remember watching this and thinking that was interesting during the first watch through. At just shy of two hours, it took me a few watches to really appreciate what was created. This was about six or seven years after being introduced to Robotech through Harmony Gold. WIth Ed explaining that each series of Robotech being it’s own separate Anime that had nothing to do with the next, made Do You Remember Love that much more great to sit and watch (especially the beer can missile).
The ship and mecha designs for this movie were outstanding b…

For full transparency, this is my first foray into the Macross franchise.
For its age, this is a very pretty anime with impressive background art and very solid animation, though most notably in its Itano circus scenes and battle fights. If this was pure sci-fi, would definitely solidify as it one of those series that demands a watch for its impact on anime mecha.
But while the complaint that idols in space converting aliens to CULTURE might be falling on deaf ears to adherents of this franchise, it is unfortunately so off-putting as a plot point that it simply requires a mention. This movie desperately wants to give a strong "I drink respect women juice" message throughout, whether through its weird alien men vs alien women background lore or shoehorned "machismo pilot that sexually ass…

Absolutely blew me away after watching SDF. One of my favorite anime movies I’ve ever seen. Viewing SDF vastly improves your first viewing of the movie, as otherwise you’ll miss out on a lot of side characters and bits of lore from the SDF anime. It’s a necessary sacrifice to make a movie work though, and it pays off for the main characters.
The animation is top notch. It’s gorgeous. Probably has some of the best animation I’ve seen in a movie.
The love triangle is vastly improved and actually makes sense. In a lot of ways, this is closer to how it should have played out in the show.
There are only two things I strongly dislike about the movie. The assassination of Focker’s personality into a total piece of shit is horrifying. Then there’s the Zentradi redesign. The new look is terrible…

It is important to preface my thoughts with that I understand anyone who hates this movie for how horribly sexist it is even at a time when the space opera anime already had female characters who were not presented in this way (e.g. Patlabor, Gundam, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) but it exists to me as super interesting piece of art with extremely respectable qualities.
Leaving the obvious aside, the animation is amazing, even today it is a timeless masterpiece in the visual aspect, with a great choreographic handling of space fights, natural movements, everything that concerns Minmay is visually amazing. The same goes for the artistic direction of the film, I am very fascinated by the colors chosen as the main pallette, the alien architecture, the clothing of the characters, all that is undeniab…

The original Macross anime was a unique show that delved into the profound themes of intergalactic discovery, mutual understanding, complex character development, and the struggles of humanity's survival. However, this movie seemed to have lost sight of the essence that made the series so special, as it turned into a mere two-hour advertisement for song albums.
One of the most glaring issues with this adaptation is the rushed and haphazard storytelling. The rich character development that made the original anime so compelling is completely lacking in this movie. Many characters seem to have lost their significance and screen time, leaving the audience disconnected and unsatisfied. The core essence of the story was butchered, reducing it to a mere fraction of its original depth and impact.…

Macross do you remember love is a retelling movie of the events that takes place in series known as Super dimensional fortress macross
They altered some of the events like minmei already famous and already an idol
The mc is already part of the skull squadron
And they change some of origins like the song that become plot device in the end part of the movie
This movie has lack of characterization since it was a movie and its impossible to tell all the vital points of the series
The good thing in this movie is the animation and the fight scenes even today it was the most beautiful handrawn animation you can find in anime
I recommend watch the series first then watch the retelling movie

Macross DYRL (it will go faster) directed by Shoji Kawamori (also mecha designer) and Noboru Ishiguro is a particular case in the vast genre that is the mecha and in this case the real robot, since where a Gundam to quote its competitor of the time bet on strong politics
Macross relies on a romance under the background of an alien-mecha war that ravaged the earth, forcing humans to live in a giant fortress in space and idol songs although the politics of the universe is still present.
This romance between the mecha pilot Hikaru and the idol Lynn during the first part of the movie and I find extremely touching, their meeting by chance in the middle of a fight is not the most original but it's the treatment that touched me, the movie takes its time to develop their relationship, we see them…

TL;DR
A great complementary piece to Macross: in my opinion the story isn’t as good, but the new animation makes up for it. If you have already seen the series this is a must watch, otherwise this isn’t a recap movie, so I would suggest watching the original Macross before watching this.
Story [8]
Do You Remember Love isn’t a recap of the Macross Series: the themes are the same and by the end the situation in the movie is similar to that of the original anime, what changes is the way the ending is reached.
This retelling is well made, but it has some pacing issues: since the first half of the movie needs to touch on many of the plot points of the series in very little time everything moves very fast leaving no time for reflection. Luckily the second half of the movie is better paced and…

Movies often fail when trying to retell a series because of how rushed and condensed they have to be. Still, "Do You Remember Love?" managed to cement itself as necessary viewing for after the series, despite its flaws. I watched this first not knowing what I was getting myself into, and with fascination, though I obviously missed a lot as this was intended for those who had already watched the series. After watching the series and coming back to watch this one more time after not remembering it so well, everything made sense, even more so at times. It felt like a whole different experience, so much more satisfying with it's breathtakingly beautiful art, so much more improved compared to the series. Seeing Minmay and Misa drawn so much more beautifully and moving s…

After finishing the og series, I went straight into this film and it was a really fun experience.
This film looked really good, in terms of detail and animation, its up there for one of the nicest films i’ve seen and unlike the og there isn’t really any massive quality drops which I noticed. The ost was yet again really good and i liked the new versions which was added.
I wasn’t sure about how this film rewrites some of the stuff from the series, but I do think it kind of makes more sense this way, I’m just a bit mixed about them doing that in the first place.
This film doesn’t work at all as a replacement to the original series it just doesn’t have the development or depth, they get away with not explaining things just because you have seen the series.
The final battle to this was a sp…

10 minutes into this 80s classic movie and I was completely hooked. The cinematic shots were mind blowing. The amount of detail and fluidity was flawless. Keep in mind there is no digital here, a job impressively done. Atmospheric shots were fresh and unique. The Battle scenes were choreographed superbly. The imagination in visualising a futuristic and technologically advanced world was hands down exciting, entertaining, and creative. I cannot praise this half of the anime enough.
Unfortunately for the other half of the movie which personally brought much disappointment was the interaction and relation between characters. Possibly due to the art style, bodily gestures, facial expressions and reactions felt utterly off. To put it in a colloquial way I found myself saying "WHAT THE FUCK" a…

My what a film and more of a rabbit hole than I anticipated.
I first gained knowledge of the Macross universe through an AMV of Nanidato's "Super Riser" after being recommended it by chance upon finishing listening to "Plastic Love" for the 8 millionth time. At the time I didn't know what and AMV was and took straight to the comments to try and find out what the anime was so I could watch it for the amazing music, visuals, and most importantly the looks of Lynn Minmay.
Upon scourging Google for "Super Dimension Fortress Macross DYRL free" I found the full movie on YouTube that was posted without any copyright claims!?!?!?
Boy was I in for a surprise, not only did I figure out that the song was not in the movie but I realized a new obsession; I had come to love everything about this mo…

This review is coming from someone who hasn't watched the series, I understand many of the flaws of the movie would be gone with the series, I'll probably go back and watch it eventually.
As a film separate from the context of the full series it manages to stay quite cohesive throughout the run-time rarely losing me. However there are times where I think it really needed longer time with some of the characters and more time to really show the time between major events, but it does it's best and does it quite well.
Love the aesthetic, it's probably what kept me the most interested. Despite being a movie revolving around singing I didn't really care for the singing. The relationships are just as expected, the characters act as you would expect aswell. The general theme is very much in the…

More campy and more condensed than its source material, Do You Remember Love? is also much more beautiful than its source material.
This film version of the original Macross is much less subtle, and much more extravagant. It has a totally retooled story, has a LEGENDARY animation team, who would go forth and work on some of the best anime ever made. It was the benchmark for animation for a long while, and its very apparent why; the entire runtime of this film really is pure, unadulterated sasuga, bolstered by a beautifully-composed score.
But in the end, aside from its technical perfection and influence, Do You Remember Love? accomplished what Nolan’s Interstellar tried so hard to convey, but failed:
it makes us believe that love can save the universe.
And it takes one hell of a mo…

For an upcoming project it was necessary for me to see this film. I had not seen anything Macross related before seeing this film but the promotional artwork for the film got me really excited. However after sitting through the two hour runtime, I am frustrated.
The beginning of this film was somewhere between great and amazing. The opening thirty or so minutes really pulled me. The opening concert, the fight outside the space ship, the rescue of the singer, the short bonding between the main characters, all of these moments were done exquisitely.
Another element of the film that is on full display from the get-go is the gorgeous art. The character models, the architecture of the buildings, and the subtle flourishes around the main animatio…

Most people in the anime community have probably heard of the show Mobile Suit Gundam. It’s unquestionably one of the grandfathers of the anime that air today. It proved anime can have narrative that can be taken seriously by an adult audience and the tropes that it perfected for its time are still used in anime today, even if the mecha genre is dying they can be seen in other genres and if you watched the original Mobile Suit Gundam it won’t be hard to trace back the tropes. It is arguably the most influential anime of all time and deserves to be placed on a pedestal for its historical value. But many people miss out on a mecha title that is disputably; equally as important as Gundam. That anime is Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Macross captured the hearts of many anime fans that were…

*SINCE CHANCES ARE, YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE, I IMPLORE YOU TO SEEK IT OUT BEFORE RETURNING TO THIS REVIEW. THERE ARE PLENTY OF SPOILERS FOR "MACROSS: DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE?".
You know, people tend to have a lot of adamant notions on things. There are people who believe that the original version of a story is inherently and exponentially better than alternative versions and retellings. There are people who try to say that men are inherently better than women or vice versa. You have people who claim music to be less impactful and worth being labeled "art" as paintings and fiction. In one fell swoop, Macross: Do You Remember Love manages to address every single one of these issues (including the first and third ones indirectly) and do so phenomenally. As a fan of this franchise since the…

Macross is a classic mecha series that's surprisingly suits well with the musical dramas settings on it.
PLOT:
In the fictional modern world of 2009, Humans were engaged in war with a giant male aliens in which was called Zentraedi and their female counterpart Meltrandi.
