Introduction

The streets of Treasure Town are said to belong to "The Cats." They know everything that goes on in the city, and no one can stir up trouble without going through them first. In reality, The Cats are a pair of orphan boys called Black and White, who aren’t afraid of anything or anyone. But their rule of the streets is challenged when the Yakuza come to town and start making changes. The wild Black and the carefree White have no one to rely on but themselves to get their Treasure Town back to the way it was. But their bond is tested as they quickly realize going back to how things were may no longer be an option. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

With my final score ending up nearly three full points below what the consensus here on MAL seems to be I'll immediately concede some of my opinions on this movie may be unpopular, but it simply didn't do it for me. Throughout the entirety of my viewing I was varying levels of bored. Sure, you get the occasional street chase or violent confrontation, so it isn't a complete Serial Experiments Lain level of snoozefest, but it never ramps up the excitement or the stakes beyond a handful of moments like that. I think saying there's an actual STORY here is a bit generous as well. There's a fleshed out SETTING and CONCEPT, but as far as character development, actual plot points, meaningful bullet points actually occurring throughout the film I'd say it's sorely lacking. As a distinction, it feel…

I watched a 20th anniversary screening of this film. This makes Tekkon Kinkreet the 3rd Studio 4°C movie I've watched in theatres this year, with All You Need is Kill, and ChaO being the two others to release stateside this year. And it certainly is a doozy of a film. The story centers around the main boys, White and Black, as they try to fight back against the Yakuza that is trying to develop the town for their profit. While the Yakuza have been a part of city life for a long time, the new Yakuza are much more bloodthirsty, even compared to the older ones. One thing that strikes me as odd throughout the film is the characterization of Kimura. In the beginning of the movie, he chops off the ear of a small-time gang in order to threaten them, but by the end of the movie, he's mellowed out…

I was intrigued right from the beginning—seeing Ganesha in the opening instantly pulled me in. The Hindi text sprinkled across the walls caught my eye too. Visually, this film is insane. The world-building is incredible, and the way it blends 3D with 2D animation is done beautifully. The camera movement is especially impressive—they absolutely nailed it. The characters take their time to grow and develop, which really works in the film’s favor. You can feel a slow, creeping sense of dread building up as it goes on. The atmosphere throughout is unreal. I loved it from start to finish. No cringe moments at all, and the dialogue is solid. “This town’s got a certain je ne sais quoi.” — perfect line, honestly. White and Black were fascinating characters, and their bond was one of my favorite…

Wow! The atmosphere is created with extreme technical skill and consistent enough style, merging different animation techniques in a time period when not many creative directors were combining 2D digital, super involved and detailed environment design in 3D, and 2D digital, invoking CEL style watercolors. Fun choreography and cinematic for action and chase scenes! The creative direction is very very impressive to me. This is a gorgeous film and for me, as I also dabble in storyboards or environment/asset design, this is a stylistic guilty pleasure. Characters were very likeable or at least understandable. Even the "lukewarm" types, they still were written with conviction and personality. Very good characters! There were plenty of background characters who, even with one or two lines, stil…

I enjoyed Tekkonkinkreet from start to finish, even though if it wasn't for the reasons I was expecting. The art is gorgeous as expected and really helps bring a unique feel to Treasure Town. The story of Black and White is a wonderful story about the balance of sin and peace, yin and yang. The action is wonderful but for me it is upstaged by the immersion of the film. I felt myself captured by every second of this movie. The psychological turn that the film takes played out extremely well and I would recommend this anime experience to anyone.

DIRE AND DISMAL ANIME SHOCK HORROR (contains spoilers) I’ve been watching anime since 1970 when “Marine Boy” first came to Western audiences, so I’d like to think I have some experience to draw upon when criticizing this effort. THE ART: Studio 4°C, who produced this anime, have a “unique style” ), say the fans - but "Tekkon" looks, to me, like one of the ugliest animes ever. What’s so bad about the artwork? It resembles the closeups you would see on “Ren and Stimpy”, where the POV goes up one of the MCs nostrils, showing us snot, nasal hairs, and other unsightly things you never planned on seeing. Studio 4°C may have some rep for being daring, taking chances, etc, but this was my first encounter with their output, and I’m not impressed so far. By a roundabout comparison, the composer,…

Tekkon Kinkreet English: Reinforced Concrete Black and White are the boys who rule this town. They are known as the Cats, and they let NO ONE else rule their territory. Other gangs may laugh when they show up, but this witty and stylish pair are crafty enough to wipe that smile off any gang's face and break a few teeth in the process. The world here is incredibly creative without being too twisted, yet edgy enough not to be disturbing and yet somehow interesting. If I were to wrap it up in one word, I'd call it ENTERTAINMENT. But it's more than just two kids dodging the normal escapades of life and living it up on the town. There is a darkness to Black, and a naivete to White that make each interaction with each other very unique. Almost opposites, the love for one another is immense,…

After a 5 or so hours of a losing streak in DoTA2, I’d gotten tired of it and decided to watch something. Tekkon Kinkreet, also known as Black and White, was the first thing I saw in my anime folder so I went that. By the end of the hour and 50 minutes movie, I was glad to say that my fervor for anime has been revived. It’s kind of weird that the only reason I had downloaded Tekkon Kinkreet a long time ago was because I had found a song titled ‘Aru Machi no Gunjo’ by Asian Kung Fu Generation which I loved to bit and then discovered that it was the ending credits song for Tekkon Kinkreet. It’s a rule of thumb that if an anime has an AKFG song somewhere playing during it’s run-time then that anime is bound to be good. And, by God, Tekkon Kinkreet sure was something. 3 minutes into the mov…

I will admit this is not a perfect film. There's no such thing as a perfect film. There are some unanswered questions, the plot is a little wonky, and the art style is definitely different. Even so, Tekkon Kinkreet is absolutely my favorite anime movie. Here's why: I personally loved the art style. I loved how different and unique it was. I found it fit well with the story. I couldn't imagine the film being any other way. The emotions shown in the characters are beautiful and the character development is done well. The bond/relationship between Kuro and Shiro (Black and White) is something I have never seen in any other film. The characters are clearly a representation of light and dark (black and white) (good and bad) bringing a further complexity to the show. It's a wonderful story abo…

You know that feeling when you start watching something and when it starts, in just the first few seconds you get the feeling that "Yes, this is gonna be something good. I am going to have so much fun watching this.". Thats the kind of feeling that i got when i just started watching Tekkon Kinkreet. The animation is stunning and unlike any you will ever see. Every scene has so many details filled in it that even if you pause it at every second, you will find something new to look at everytime. The color pallete is also noteworthy because it makes the main characters stand out by showing them in bright colors and keeps the rest of the scenery and other characters have dull, almost pastel shades(at least in some scenes). The sound suits the scenes and though it's not extraordinary, it doe…

Rate of 6 (fair) seen via English dubbed Likes: Plot- Very elaborate. The writer was honest. If words were mentioned they had reason and purpose. Some writers fill up time with words not this writer. You will not feel like you watched a mystery with your W questions. And since this was a kid p.o.v. the art had a certain flare that matched the plot. sound- was on key and right actors and the right parts. Dislikes: art- Sadly, the are was not realistic. Had the art would have had more detail to make it look like an actual person and not just a drawing more things would have happened. More compassion could be drawn, more loss of imagination. A good way of putting it is like Pablo Picasso. A world famous artist. Whom made his work on abstract (different from the norms) thinking. It is uniqu…

Tekkonkinkreet was a visual pleasure to see. Directed by Michael Arias, this dynamically animated film featured themes of loyalty, industrialization, and inner conflict. The audience is immediately introduced to an immersive pan of an intricately rendered city as the two main protagonists, simply named “Black” and “White”, literally fly through the landscape. Black, the emotionally-aloof and “mature” elder brother who fights off gangs and thugs within the city, overlooks White, his younger, more innocent and optimistic sibling. Together, they form the “Stray Cats,” who contribute to most of the violent underpinnings of Treasure Town, grabbing the attention of both delinquents and authorities figures alike. The main crux of the story revolves around a plan to carve out the city in place of…

I'll put it like this. If you like stories to be clear this isn't for you. I enjoyed the art and music of this movie but the thing I lacked is details some sense of story with a backstory and what I got is good animation of "wtf is happening" and "I don't even" moments ... It's one of those movies that is more art than a movie in my opinion. Make sure you are in the mood for not thinking 2 much or get high I guess... It has some clear metaphors that hit you a few days after watching the movie at least it did for me but at the time I watched it It just felt as a mess and I really thought the whole thing could have been presented more in detail. The decisions characters make aren't really explained too well and leave you confused.

One question I ask myself quite often is: "Why didn't you watch Tekkon Kinkret?" And I don't ask it to myself. I ask it to you reading this. First of all Tekkon Kinkreet is made by Studio 4°C . The same guys that did Animatrix, Mind Game and Genius Party. If you watched any of these movies you won't need this review, because you already know that you should take a look at this movie. If you're fast, you may have opened the tab already. In case that you don't know any of these movies... write them down. And watch them. They are one of the best studios out there. And certainly one of the most excentric. Now that you continue reading, let`s start with the review. Tekkon Kinkreet is a tale so universal, it may be told forever. Or it may have been told since the begining. The everlasting figh…

Okay, first review and first of all, to the person saying the art is bad because its out of proprotion, it an ART STYLE. You wouldn't tell edvard munch that "The Scream" is bad because it's out of proportion, or Picasso because it's "weird" The story was good, but wouldn't have been half as good without the characters of Kuro and Shiro driving it. The tormented aspects of their relationship is the entire reason for the film. 6/10 For me, the art made this film unique and refreshing, from the detailed architecture to the stylized fight scenes. I loved the color scheme for its vibrant choices and the line work was intriguing. Again, it wouldn't have been as good if it had gone with more traditional or conventional styles, or would be an entirely different film. 9/10 I don't remember much…

"What is it about fire? So calm and peaceful but… inside, all power and destruction. It’s hiding something. Just like people do. Sometimes you have to get close to find what’s inside. Sometimes you have to get burned to see the truth." The concept of balance versus unbalance/yin and yang as an internal struggle is not a new or groundbreaking premise, but it is not necessary for an anime (or other form of entertainment media for that matter) to show you something you'd never have considered before for it to be a work of art, or even a masterpiece. Tekkon Kinkreet portrays the concept of yin and yang in a unique, masterfully executed way through wonderful and refreshing characters. Despite the fact that the conclusion to the story becomes predictable, this doesn't detract from the experienc…

Tekkon Kinkreet took me by surprise. At first I noticed the superb art and choice of colour, but then the story evolved and it completely took me of guard. Story: It's sad and dark but not too heavy due to its more comical scenes. The only thing I could've wished for was more backstory as well as explaining more in depth of Kuro's feelings, why he did the things he did etc. Art: Simply amazing. My eyes had several orgasms watching this. I also like how they chose to colour this, it is very colourful and happy for such a sad story, but it really works! I think it was intentional to do so, I think that all the details and happy colours were there to show us the false image of reality, how we see the world. The story and the art clashes, but in a way that made me think. I thought that maybe…
