Handsome Girl

Handsome Girl

Introduction

Hagiwara Mio is a 14-year-old TV actress who has gotten popular. One day on a set, she meets Kumagai Ichiya, who tells her that her acting "stinks." Mio is hurt by his comments, but she finds that she can't get Ichiya out of her mind. It turns out that Ichiya is a promising director, who directed a music video for Mio's friend Sawaki Aya, an idol singer. After the success of this music video, Ichiya is asked to direct a movie, and he wants Mio to be the heroine, because he feels that she is a "handsome" girl like the actresses of old. How will Mio cope with her feelings toward Ichiya? (Source: T.H.E.M. Anime Review, edited)

♫ I want your love that fills with sensation. Give you all my body tonight. I need your love that follows your emotions. Every time it seems so without you. ♫ ― an insert song, Handsome Girl. Handsome Girl is a standalone shoujo romance OVA based on the manga by Wataru Yoshizumi. The main strength of this anime is that very shoujo romance style from the turn of the 80s and 90s: both in technical terms, in terms of plot, and in terms of characters and tropes. If you absolutely love that style, go ahead and watch it; you’ll enjoy it. Wataru Yoshizumi’s instantly recognisable style + superb work by the artists and animators = a stunningly beautiful piece of art. This is one of the most beautiful OVAs I’ve ever seen in my entire miserable life. Many scenes and individual shots are truly cin…

Can one adapt a romance manga in a single 30-minute episode? The short and obvious answer would be no. But that did not stop them from trying. I haven't really read the source material to be sure, but based on the other reviews I guess this is the full adaptation of the whole thing. I use the words "full adaptation" very loosely here because in any way shape or form can you adapt the source material in 1 episode. In reality, this seems to adapt half of the original story, but even that is unreasonable since every chapter is around 40 pages long. It could work for an action OVA, but this is definitely it. It just feels this OVA skips so many steps in making an endearing love story. It all just falls flat, especially the drama. There's no time to develop any of the characters or the relati…

The ova is just a typical 90s shoujo anime with nothing that stands out as being particularly interesting. By no means is it egregious in any ways but that's where the fault lies with the show just not doing enough to warrant a watch. It falls into the classic ova trap of trying to cram too much into a single episode which destroys the pacing and rushes character development. If it was presented as a 12 episode series it could have potentially helped with the flaws in character development. Overall if you're looking for a well written romance with a solid plot I would not recommend, but if you just want something to watch it would be a fun watch.

There are parts of this that look very nice, particularly the very pastel 90s fashion sense and the motorcycle scenes. However, this is first and foremost a romance, and that part of the story never really came together. There's no motivation shown for the leads to get together, not much of a romantic conflict keeping them apart, and not even any chemistry. Their meet cute goes badly, they spend more time together, we're informed that they have warmed to one another, and that's really almost the extent of it. They just don't care much, so I'm not sure why I should be expected to. A significant part of this OVA is music videos of a minor character singing, and I did enjoy the vintage tunes even if the style isn't my favorite.

I did not see a review on this so I decided to write one. I literally watched this just to kill time while waiting for stuff so I was not exactly going into this with high expectations. As you know Handsome Girl is a one episode shoujo OVA from the early 90s. The art has that 90s anime fuzzy look to it and dull audio quality, but this may just be Youtube. I actually like that about 90s anime but some may think that's distracting/off putting. I like how the scenery looks, painted backgrounds with ferns and such. I personally think the picture MAL currently has for this looks really dope. But they look rather derpy and low budget typical shoujo style in the actual show. I liked some of the background music, it sounded like sped up vaporwave. The story in this OVA was really rushed and mash…
