You're Under Arrest, the OVA series, was a blast. This is a really laid-back, chill, comedy anime, just about two cute girls as police officers, and they're just doing little crimes like saving cats or just stopping drivers that are speeding.
It's so fun, so charming. One of the most aesthetically pleasing 90s anime I've seen. It's beautifully animated. The characters are well-detailed, but one of the most detailed and eye-catching things in this anime are the vehicles. And now, I'm not a big vehicle person, not massively into cars or anything like that, but this anime almost made me want to. They're so well-polished and rendered, and they always catch your eye when they're in movement. That combined with the really expressive animation of the characters, and this anime, regardless if you…

There are two things I’d deduct two imaginary points for. The third episode, for its romance, which was once again immature, but also seemed unnecessary to me. And finally, the last episode, in which they tried to create a bit of drama by (not) transferring one character to a different role. I just can’t stand it, since I’ve noticed this in so many anime: the creators hint at something at the beginning of an episode but ultimately don’t follow through on it, and right before the end, they bring it back to where it started as if nothing had actually happened. So her separation was basically pointless, and it ends with her saying, “In the end, I realized where I truly belong.” Like, WTF—what actually changed because of that? It just unnecessarily stirred up drama. I won’t even get into the c…

You're Under Arrest is a pretty solid show. Decent characters, beautiful animation, excellent voice acting and solid music. Sadly its all wrapped around a rather thin and basic plot. The characters are strong, but not particularly memorable or original. They work for what the stories demand of them but overall. Its just lacking anything that makes it stand out.
So why is it so highly rated.
I just, had a lot of fun watching it. If you slog through all four episodes back to back that is the wrong way to do it. Once a week, in the evening with a friend or two. Take it as a relaxed, social experience not something to take seriously.

This anime is an example of how good cinematography can carry a show with a mediocre story.
In this one, the plot is barely there, nothing to write home about. But boy, the then state-of-art animation, absolutely stunning shots, flavourful sound design, the retro vibes... If you give this show a chance, it will suck you in with both the atmosphere of the more calm scenes and the spectacle of the breathtaking action. This is what the golden era of Japanese animation looks like. One might even say that the show is overproduced for the content it has to provide. My recommendation is simple: feast your eyes and ears and turn your brain off. It's just a silly, short show and it's not pretending to be anything else.
If you're looking for a pleasant experience to just relax and have some fun,…

I'm going to go against the grain a bit here and admit that I did not enjoy this one in the least. The first episode seemed promising but it kind of never lived up to it.
The characters were all bland cookie cutter tropes. The plots focused way to much on a love story between two of the cops that wasn't even well written or well implemented. And while the animation was wonderful, the art it's self was bland and lifeless. In the end I had a very hard time caring about these under developed characters and their daily lives.
Maybe I'm being too harsh on this show, but it's from Studio Deen, who's output is usually of a much higher standard than this and on top of that already gave us the very similar and much better made Patlabor.

Review 23.11.2018: Taihou Shichau Zo OVA
"Every review is subjective, art is subjective your opinion may differ, never trust reviews to make the opinion for you, use them as a guide and make your own journey."
Taihou Shichauzo is one of those amazingly underrated gems of the 90s that you stumble upon by pure luck, and shamelessly I came to stumble upon it too late but better late than never as they ironically say.
The 4 OVA episode series is the beginning of a franchise that is not much known to the English viewers of anime and restrains more popularity with the Spanish and Japanese communities, however to my surprise Taihou Shichauzo is an amazing short series that proves the super-giant in the industry Studio Deen’s unlimited talent pool once more.
With amazingly funny cast of charac…

This anime absolutely blew me away. Coming into "You're Under Arrest" I just expected some standard buddy cop cliches, mixed in with some anime ones. And boy does it deliver that and so much more. There's car chases taking you through beautifully animated scenery, there's romance arcs that actually keep you interested even though they only have 4 episodes to work with, and there's even character development that's realistic but still draws you in.
As a huge fan of 70s and 80s cop shows, the cliches in this don't bother me one bit and are perfectly executed. There's a car chase at least every episode, there's your standard partner drama between the two main protagonists, they even have a fan club of small children to cheer them on. If you like car chases and you like anime, this is THE OVA…

Studio Deen sure does make a wide range of anime and seems to take chances on their directors. For You’re Under Arrest, the previous animation director of Urusei Yatsura, Kazuhiro Furuhashi got his real first chance in the role.
This anime is, to put it simply, a cop drama about officers in the traffic division. With many similarities to Patlabor, being about the daily lives of police officers in a somewhat quirky division has surprisingly a good amount of action and humour. Due to it only being a four episode OVA series, the animation and sound quality are superb, just like the Patlabor OVA series. Everything has so much detail ranging from the artistic backdrops to the speedometers on motor bikes. The mechanical detail is simply amazing, showing how much love of vehicles there are in th…

"This police station has been running a lot more like a soap opera," - Chief Kachou (Episode 3)
1994 was a pretty good year for anime titles. There was the Studio Ghibi film Pom Poko, a story centered around environmental issues. The Street Fighter movie, based on a wildly popular videogame series, briefly fumbled its way into the spotlight. 1994 also introduced the anime world to Marmalade Boy, a well-known school-oriented series. Finally, `94 was the year in which television networks came across a mini-series, a hidden gem if you will, titled You're Under Arrest (YUA). When people think of police shows, they conjure mental images of good-cop/bad-cop roles, of homicides and kidnappings, and of undercover officers raiding a criminal hideout. You're Under Arrest doesn't conjure these image…

1994 was a much simpler time for anime and a lot of this stemmed from the fact anime was treated as cartoons back then rather than fantasy simulators. In today’s market, a show like You’re Under Arrest wouldn’t work. It’s rife with too much silliness and not enough cohesion, as well as a lack of the appropriate amount of fan service to appease modern anime fans. As you may remember from my Hyper Police review, I am a sucker for 90’s anime. The style, the sound, the pervasive silliness. It was a time of cute girls doing cute things while also being completely badass at the same time. And that’s where You’re Under Arrest comes in, a four episode OVA that would turn into a hundred-some episode behemoth.
Natsumi Tsujimoto is joining up with a division of the Tokyo police. She’s wild and caref…

You're Under Arrest is a pretty fantastically made classic OVA that I really enjoyed. Let's go over what makes it so special.
First and foremost, I like to point out the art. There are some really great moments here & there that are just fantastically animated, and gorgeous to look at. If you're looking for some impressive Sakuga, you've come to the right place. There are a lot of slower moments where not as much happens, and those parts aren't quite as nicely animated, but the artists still keep things looking clean & consistent throughout. I think the character design is a bit typical, but it's also unoffensive and works well enough for the characters portrayed.
Speaking of the characters, they are an interesting bunch, all with different, charming personalities and it's really nice to…

You're Under Arrest follows the happenings of a police station and in particular those officers of the Traffic division. Aired as an OVA, this later came to be the first 4 episodes of the TV series bearing the same name. However, this review will assess it's performance as a stand-alone.
- ANIMATION -
As expected from an OVA the animation quality is superb; with great detail taken in facial expression and general movement fluidity. The backgrounds are also of high detail and do not have that colour tone difference otherwise common to most televised series. Fujishima Kousuke being an avid motorsports enthusiast, made sure that You're Under Arrest featured excellent animated footage of cars, motorbikes and other mechanicals. It was an obvious match for his love of cars and anime that brough…
