Garzey's Wing

Garzey's Wing

Introduction

Christopher "Chris" Senshuu is an easygoing guy who keeps failing his college entrance exams well into his mid-twenties. His days are occupied with Kendo practice, visits to his family's shrine, and dreaming of his high school reunion. When his spirit is suddenly transported to the world of Byston Well, Chris becomes Garzey's Wing, a legendary holy warrior. The Metomeus tribe summoned him to help liberate them from slavery, but unfortunately, Chris has no knowledge on how to be a holy warrior, and moreover, only has an incredibly dull sword which he salvaged from a corpse. To make matters more complicated, there is another Chris who is still in the normal world! He cannot control the events in Byston Well, but is tied to the fate of the other Chris. The young man must struggle and adventure in a world of magical creatures and mysterious foreigners. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

On October 30th, in the year of our lord 1938, a radio-novella adapted from the writings of Englishman and author H.G. Wells was read aloud by radio narrator Orson Welles as part of The Mercury Theatre on the Air, and broadcasted around the country via the CBS Radio Network. The innovative and gripping story that gripped the attention of listeners and thrusted itself into the annals of history was in no way related to the story that is Byston Well Monogatari. That work of fiction, and indeed all works of fiction, can only dream of reaching the heights of storytelling and fantastical drama that Byston Well Monogatari so effortlessly achieved. This is truly one of the anime of all time. If you are a connoisseur of anime of the isekai variety, then this is the feature for you. Our protagoni…

Don't get me wrong, this anime is a steaming pile of cow poo. But, if you come into it knowing that, and watch the dub, it's a hilarious experience, kind of like watching Birdemic or the Room. It's so bad that you can't help but laugh at it. The voice acting is constant monotone yelling, the animation is awful, and the plot is nonexistent. They use made up words and never explain what they mean, almost like they're talking in simlish. It's objectively horrible, but it's hilarious. Definitely watch with a group of friends and get super drunk while you do it.

If you only have about an hour and a half to watch anything in the world, I would recommend Guy Ritchie's seminal comedy, Snatch. Make sure you catch the movie and not the terrible series that sought to be a spiritual successor. If you only had about an hour and a half to watch any anime in the world, though, I'd suggest Garzey's Wing. Why? Well, M.D. Geist Director's cut only has a runtime of 50 minutes so you'd only get to see the first episode of Garzey's Wing if you did that. Let's just get into the weeds of it; Garzey's Wing is phenomenal. Some people might insist the plot is meandering nonsense that goes nowhere; this is absolutely false. Garzey's Wing is an incredibly important part of the Byston Well Cinematic Universe--but even divorced from the context Aura Battler Dunbine, Ga…

To be quietly placed in the same drawer as Haruhi Suzumiya labeled "Cultural artifacts overhyped by 00s anime fans because their childhood media environment was completely different." Totally understand that someone might like this if they had memed all the bad line reads to death over the years. Totally understand why this was such an interesting oddity in a different time and place. I get it, but it's not that time and place anymore. It doesn't appeal to me. The anime was uninterestingly bad. The dub was uninterestingly bad, albeit with a few chuckle-worthy line reads here and there. That's all it was.

Anime are meant for entertainment, so if you enjoy a mix of fantasy and historical, you can have your fun with this series. I find the art style to be alright and the OST does set the mood. Even if the story gets confuse with the two worlds, I personally couldn't help but cheer for the protagonist and the tribe to get into freedom. The Anime does have a flair of Germanic mythology mixed with Japanese characteristics. It's only 90 minutes long and the advantage is that you can more easily take breaks in-between the episodes compared to it being one big movie, which helped me a lot to regain focus. All in all, while you might not expect a master piece unless you extremely appreciate the Anime, it's an Anime that can be enjoyable for those, who like these types of historical war setti…

This is a completely trash anime, but it's also super hilarious. The dub is incredible. I watched it with a friend and we couldn't believe the dub was the official english dub for the anime. Everything about the whole series doesn't make any sense at all, ideas shift and move around so quickly that you can't understand a single aspect of what is actually important to the story and what is just casual moments. The dubs are so confusing and the tones are so monotone and flat and alarming that even when they're joking it sounds like complete chaos. It's like they're just yelling the entire time. So many quotable moments, holy shit. You need to watch this to appreciate some truly charming terrible anime. It's worth the time. The art and animation are god-awful, and the sound design is campy an…

Let's start off right: Watching this in Japanese is torture. Watching this in English? The best decision you've EVER made. In your life. To wit: One day, Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of Gundam, went "hey what if i wrote a prequel to that Aura Battler Dunbine thing I did". So he did. Sometime later, someone went "let's adapt that prequel into these OVAs". And Tomino went "lol sure dude". And lo, GARZEY'S WING was born. It's so quintessentially bad. Legend says it pierced the veil of time and H.P. "Racist McGee" Lovecraft saw it and went "that's less explainable than Cthulhu". So where to begin? Story? There's a story? I mean this half-Japanese dude goes to a fantasy world but he's still on Earth but his soul and body are connected, he's surrounded by 12th and 13th century foreign warriors…

On one rainy day at home in London, I decided to visits the deepest depths of the anime rabbit hole to the find anime that are considered to be the worst of all times. Inside the anime rabbit hole, I found of bunch garbage animes that I have seen before such as Big Order, Ousama Game The Animation and Mirai Nikki as well some that I haven’t seen yet such as Vampire Holmes, Hanoka, and Psychic Wars. Now out of all the anime that I dug out from the anime rabbit hole Garzey Wing was the most interesting one of the bunch due to the show being directed by non-other than Tomino the man who also gave us the Gundam franchise. Before I watched Garzey Wing I was curious of how bad it would be because before I watched this all the anime that were from the rabbit hole insulted me in one way an anothe…

“I MUST SOMEHOW MAKE SENSE OF OUR CONVOLUTED SITUATION!” This anime is a horrifyingly hot mess. The story line is a disaster, the character development is all over the place, and at some point your brain just gives up trying to figure it out. Technically this anime gets a 1/10. However, That said, the dub is just so bad that it's ABSOLUTE GOLD. Watch it with a big group of people, you won't be disappointed. Its rare to find a show with the English translation and voice acting so horrible that you are put into a state of cringe worthy bliss. Worth the watch, 10/10.

This OVA is not remotely good from a serious point of view, but it made me laugh more than I have in a while. It speeds along too fast for you to understand, the plot is sub-par at best, and you don't get a good feel of the characters at all. Yet, it's one of the more enjoyable series I've seen. This is one of those that you watch when you just want a good laugh, or when you're hanging out with friends. It makes no sense, but you'll be rolling around on the floor in laughter, mostly due to confusion.

Byston Well Monogatari: Garzey no Tsubasa is a notoriously bad OVA. It was brought to us by J.C. Staff and the creator of Gundam, Tomino Yoshiyuki. Is it as bad as people make it out to be? Is it, at least, entertainingly bad? Let's have a look. Story: We open with our protagonist, Chris, riding off on his motorcycle. While on his way home, the bell necklace he wears starts ringing and he finds himself being whisked away leaving his clothes and bike behind. He winds up in a fantasy world just in time to assist a slave revolt. With the assistance of magic wings he has to help lead the slaves to freedom while consulting with his real world self. There are a lot of problems with the story from a narrative perspective. The principal one being that it's terrible of explaining anything. Why…

"Heaven and Hell, all that's in between is a world called Byston Well." That, and a metric shitton of fudgery that somehow got made into an anime. Welcome to LawlMartz' shlockfest, episode iforgothowmany, where I watch garbage 80s and 90s OVAs, temporarily lose my sanity, and when they let me out of the asylum, I recount my experiences in review format- usually with destructive results. Garzey's Wing is no exception. This is one of the most unequivocally, fundamentally awful anime with almost no peers, aside from Tomino's own creations. It wasn't even as hard to watch as Brain Damagd, but was just incomprehensibly and fundamentally bad on every level. One wonders how someone can even come up with such a ridiculously nonsensical story, and at no level, ever be challenged by anyone else…

Garzey's Wing has been described by some as the worst anime of all time. Is it? I don't think I've seen enough anime to be able to say that. But among the anime I've seen? It's hard to think of a poorer show. On the bright side, there is only 3 episodes of it, so it will be over quickly! Garzey's Wing is the third anime to be set in the fictional medieval world of Byston Well after the television series Aura Battler Dunbine and a 3 episode OVA of said show made a few years later. Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the first series and of the overall franchise returns to direct. While I have not read them, I have heard that the original novels that the Byston Well universe was devoid of mecha and that the animation studio Sunrise forced Tomino to add them to Dunbine. With this show, Tomino f…

the short ova got very unfairly treated on this site. now, thats not a big surprise many other animes are, just to mention Gintama as an example. But contrary as many mediocre products are hyped for no good reason, this fragile movie got trampled brutally. made a few years earlier than turnAgundam it is taking on again a material which got so distorted in the first animation under the pressure of the producers that Tomino felt it should be made once more without all the additions of aura battler. and so the story is presented in the harsh and brutal inviroment of a medieval world with little space and time for peaceful scenes of refreshment. the way the story is introduced and told is not unlike the later turnAgundam. Only the actions and the dialogues deliver informations, and so the wat…

Imagine, if you will, that you've been transported to a fantastical alternative universe. In this world enormous creatures, resembling dinosaurs roam the landscape. Yet there are still people here: foreign looking ones though, and wearing clothes from the sixteenth century. And if all that wasn't depressing enough, your sword is considerably less sharp than you would have anticipated. Welcome to the world of Byston Well, and the exercise in terrible production that is Garzey's Wing! Anyone who has ever dreamed of creating a work of narrative fiction: be it a film, a novel or an anime, would be well advised to watch Garzey's Wing, because it is composed entirely of examples of what not to do when writing. You'll find out what some of the worst possible ways of providing 'exposition' are. Y…

TL;DR - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_8Bhz5c224, SO BAD IT'S GLORIOUS! This is not an anime to watch alone. This is an anime to watch on bad movie night. This is the anime equivalent of Tommy Wiseau's The Room. This is Plan 9 From Outer Space. This is the anime equivalent of hilariously campy. The story offers little to no background in what is clearly a rather complex fantasy world. Don't bother yourself by trying to figure anything out. It won't do a lick of good. Just sit back and laugh at this comedy gold. I don't give a crap about talking art-style and character development (with the exception of Giant Tawrad, who has an inexplicably large sword he inexplicably never uses in battle; he is the bees knees!!!), what I care about is the sound. It is of the utmost importance that yo…

Overview: When you ask Otaku today what the worst anime in existence is, you get answers like Pupa, Mars of Destruction, and maybe Kis X Sis. When you asked otaku in the 1990s what the worst anime series were, you got one of 2 answers: MD Geist or Garzey's Wing. Since I already reviewed Geist, it was inevitable that I would one day have to review this pile. The Legend: Let us travel back in time to the 1990s when everyone was talking about this shitty movie called Garzey's Wing. You probably had dial up internet, and booting up a plain text site could easily take 15 minutes even if you could keep your siblings and parents off the phone. Surfing the net...sucked! There were sites where anime was discussed, but no massive anime databases anything like MAL. Yet somehow entirely from word…

An anime that puts most others released since 1996 to shame. I am here to talk about Tsui no Sora Garzey’s Wing. Garzey’s Wing is a three episode OVA from 1996, taking place in both our world and the fictional land of “Byston Well,” which is apparently a world between heaven and hell (but not our Earth). This anime was written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the man behind the Gundam franchise – he also used the Byston Well world in the 1983 anime Aura Battler Dunbine. The story follows Chris Chiaki, a high school graduate who just wants to go to his class reunion pool party. But alas, when the supernatural swan flies down and rips a part of your soul out of your body while driving by a shrine and somehow transports it to an alternate world, a damper may be put in your plans. Or at lea…

You know, this isn’t just going to be a review, this is more of a warning sign of what not to do in an anime production or if you intend to watch this (and I know some of you curious enough to watch it will), you might as well be drunk enough to stomach through this one. Garzey's Wing is infamous for having a minimally explained plot, so most ideas of the purpose must be extrapolated. The protagonist Chris is abruptly whisked away to a parallel world called Byston Well while his physical body remains in his home world. Chris' spiritual manifestation travels to a new world, where he is thrust into a rebellion. Chris is told that he has a mystical power called "Garzey's Wing", which causes large wings made of light to come out of his ankles, allowing him to fly and run quickly. OK, let’s ju…

Strange case we got here: a show so bad that it's good! Make sure to watch this show dubbed though because ever single line is delivered with such horribly delivery that you can only question if the actors have ever held a normal conversation with a person before. The story and characters in this show are just awful. The story barely makes a damn bit of sense and the characters reactions to it are just terrible. That's not to say that there is not enjoyment to be had here because there is plenty of enjoyment to be had here, everything is so bad it makes you want to finish watching it at the very least. At least the art is watchable, but still pretty bad. We have our main, Chris, and for some reason he gets spirited away by a giant glowing duck and we never really get an explanation. He's…
