Relic Armor Legaciam

Relic Armor Legaciam

Introduction

The planet Libertia was once known as “the planet of death”, until humanity built three giant mirrors and created what seemed like an ideal land. It is on this planet that Professor Grace and his granddaughter Alcia live peacefully… until their home is attacked by Guild soldiers looking for the professor and for Legaciam – a special Armor that can resist extreme heat, allowing it to go to areas where humans would not survive normally. Alcia, who was at the time piloting Legaciam in order to help her grandfather with the testing, manages to get away… barely. But the Guild is determined to get Legaciam by any means necessary… (Source: ANN)

Relic Armor Legaciam is built on a compelling concept that should have made for an engaging and memorable experience. Unfortunately, its 50-minute OVA format forces severe compromises that ultimately work against the viewer. The world, the Relic Armors themselves, and even the characters are introduced with intriguing hints, but never meaningfully explored. The audience is left wanting context and depth, aware that nothing beyond what is briefly shown will ever be revealed. Even what is presented proves uneven. While the biomechanical mechs receive a reasonable level of care in their animation, other aspects fall noticeably short. The backgrounds, which should expand the sense of scale and stimulate the imagination, are poorly utilized, fleetingly displayed, lacking detail, and quickly fo…

I started watching this ova without expectations. Mostly because i don't enjoy mecha anime. Surprisingly enough, i found a piece of art with excellent characters and a decent and cohesive story. The voice actors surely contribute to give an organic reaction every time needed-the thrilling of the young girls sound like they are actually surprised- and the face expressions in the animation. Everything is working together quite seamless. In a short span of 48 minutes you get to understand the dynamics between the main group and also the world they live in. It is not the Earth and you don't need a lengthy introduction such as Star Wars to understand it's post-apocalyptic and founded on quite mark social hierarchy. The story is quite linear but all this development makes it quite enjoyable a…

It's not a bad little show. I mean, it does have some good points to it, such as the decent artwork and some likeable characters (even if the "cute shy girl who is the granddaughter of the mecha's creator and the only one who can pilot it" is way to cliched), and a decent story set-up. But, on the flip side, there also really isn't any "there" there. It's just one of many in a sea of mecha anime that flooded the marketplace during this time, all with very slightly different back stories or slightly different designs. And Legaciam is no different - nothing special to really stand out. Just a short little story that sort of ends after this one episode, and that's it. Legaciam came. And Legaciam went. And in the end, unless you're a mecha freak, best left in the eighties.

A kinda fun 80s mech anime OVA. Style over substance, but only sorta. STORY The story, as you can tell from the synopsis of the plot, takes place on a fairly interesting world where radiation from the sun is a constant threat, giving the whole movie a bit of a Mad Max vibe. As the plot continues we learn more and more about the world, along with backstories of quite a few character. By the end I found myself actually caring about a few of them and, though most remain fairly one dimensional (the main brother and sister in particular have nothing interesting going for them) some have surprising depth that I didn't expect. I was quite surprised to find myself actually interested in the concept of the mysterious "tower" as the movie went on. In fact, by the end of the movie I actually found…

If Legaciam has only a fair story, poor sound and average characters, how come I give it a 7 overall? Because it's fun but flawed. The plot is very slight and the cliffhanger end, were it to be resolved, would instantly push it up a few notches. Taken on its own, it's one of many mecha OVAs produced around the same time, with an odd mix of serious attempts at a plot and light comedy of the sort Madox-01 uses. The mechanical designs are reminiscent of Dunbine, or the much later Brain Powered, and the combat sequences are, while formulaic, still exciting due to some interesting choreography. If, however, you bear all this in mind, Legaciam becomes a quite enjoyable one-off OVA. The futuristic society the creators designed is interesting, mixing Miyazaki-esque fantasy with a pulp-y sci-fi…
