The Dog of Flanders

The Dog of Flanders

Introduction

Nello Daas is a gifted artist residing in a village on the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium. He earns a living by selling milk in a market in the middle of the city alongside his ailing grandfather. His best friend, Alois Cogez, is the daughter of his callous landlord, who believes that Nello is corrupting his daughter and unbefitting her class. Angered by Alois' closeness to a peasant, her father sends her away to a school in Antwerp to prevent them from meeting again. While continuing his daily market runs, Nello stumbles upon an art contest surrounding the famous Peter Paul Rubens—a Flemish artist he holds in high regard. Not only does the contest offer a monetary prize, but it also comes with the opportunity to study art at a school in the same city Alois is studying. Now with a goal in mind, Nello begins to brainstorm the perfect piece, but a series of adversities threatens to end his dreams prematurely. Yet, through thick and thin, is his loyal dog, Patrasche, whom he saved from the brink of death at the hands of a cruel owner. As Nello endures through various hardships, Patrasche supports him throughout them. Flanders no Inu is a reimagined film that captures the classic story between an innocent boy and his faithful canine best friend as they traverse together until the bitter end. Incredible anime movie! I heard good things about this movie and wanted to see it for a long time. It was absolutely amazing! First off the characters are very good, Nello is kind and sweet, the dog (idk how to spell his name) was loyal and brave, the girl (idk how to spell her name either) was a great friend. All of the characters are pretty good. I didn't really like the girl's father but his reasons for being the way he was made sense. The only thing I can say is nello felt a bit too perfect but I understand this is a movie and not real life. The plot is very good I didn't get bored at all and I kept expecting something good to happen but I was wrong. I like how the movie didn't force a happy ending. The themes were friendship, loyalty and the hardships and cruelty of life and were exec…

The Story was actually sad if you understand what's happening during the movie, (i don't want to spoil) but you should give it a try . Many people charactirize it as kid movie but i think it's for all the ages. When the movie ended i had mixed feelings, i would propably rewatch it!! --->10/10 Masterpiece for me<---

Spoiler Free Good old days is coming back by watching this movie. I remember that my childhood hearttouching movies was like this. That's why it didn't surprised me, but it clearly make me cried for the first time since i watch anime. Story : Eventhough the above synopsis said that Flanders no Inu is about the friendship between a boy and a dog, actually it tells more than just that. Story about a poor young boy who lives with his grandfather in a countryside as a milk seller. You might have known what will happen next, but trust me keep watching it, you won't regret it. Art : I can't expect much since this was aired in 1997 and made by Nippon Animation. If we were living in the that 1990, we could say that the art and animation is perfect, but by modern perspective those things aren't…

Flanders no Inu: Catharsis in Two Hours After this film, I have been forced to side with the argument that a story alone can make a(n) anime/movie great. And story is at the forefront of this movie's accomplishments. At least in this regard, Flanders no Inu is transcendant, subverting the genre and common tropes. I wasn't expecting the film to be as powerful as it was in it's presentation of love and loss. Also, character development was very true-to-form; as the narrative is extremely humanistic, granting the viewer some escape from the weary and lackluster stuff in the medium, often being force-fed at an alarming rate (Come on Netflix...don't "original titles" imply originality?). The Dog of Flanders makes you care. In the words of Roger Ebert, it's an exemplar of cathartic films: "emp…

This movie made me cry so much.. You can not help but fall in love with the main characters and only want the best for them always. The bond between a child and a dog is beautiful and the ending had me in tears and I literally could not stop crying- AND I DON'T CRY AT MUCH! The story plot was interesting and sweet in the beginning. The sound was like any normal dub anime and the voices looked as if they fit the characters perfectly. This was simply a beautiful movie. The movie hurts your heart but you finish learning a great lesson about kindness and helping those less needy.

My rating for this is a whopping 95/100 I've watched many movies throughout my childhood. Namely the Pokemon movies, some Disney movies (namely Aladdin), and others. But none of them have really made a huge impact on me because of the limited time they have to get made. Characters aren't always developed, plots are too narrow, and some just turn out plain terrible...that is, until I stumbled upon THIS. I read about it on a blog and I thought "This looks interesting. Maybe I'll watch it." And right when I did...I WAS BAWLING LIKE A BABY AT THE END!!! I FOUND MY NUMBER ONE MOVIE EVER!!! Movies I've watched in my lifetime never really made an impact on me, and I read good reviews about this one...and I'm glad to say, I never expected it to be THIS awesome and...THIS ONE MOST CERTAINLY HAS!!!…

There are many anime that have the ability to bring one to tears, for any number of reasons. Barefoot Gen, Grave of the Fireflies, Clannad: After Story, Air, Ushiro no Shoumen Daare, etc, etc, etc, are but some of the titles that have tried to make the audience sympathise with their tales, some with more success than others. Where Flanders no Inu (or, to give it it's correct moniker, A Dog of Flanders), differs from those stories though, is that it's all been done before... For those of you who don't know, the story known as "A Dog of Flanders" was originally written by Ouida (the pen name of English novelist Maria Louise de la Ramé), and was first published in 1872. For over 135 years the tale has captivated the hearts and minds of audiences the world over, and has been adapted for TV a…

Do not let the above synopsis fool you, while the relationship between dog and boy certainly is affectionate PLEASE do not watch this film expecting a light-hearted, heart-warming, Homeward Bound-esque story because this film is certainly far from it. ;-; Flanders no Inu (Dog of Flanders) is based on the book by Marie Louise de la Ramée, it has been widely read and also adapted into several films and anime (MAL actually lists two series). This film is pretty much a compacted version of said series. STORY I found the story very... honest. It addresses poverty issues that occurred back in those days and it really doesn't beat about the bush. ~~~SPOILERS~~~ The film was quite a downer, to be honest. His best friend's father keeps stopping his daughter from seeing him, Patrasche's ol…
