This is one of those series that makes for incredible clip reels because of the excessive blood and violence, but the show itself is just a mess. Extremely condensed story where you don't know if it's just getting started or just ending. The overall tone is quite strange with it feeling like a mix between Ranma 1/2 and Urotsukidouji. I haven't read the manga, but I assume it's much better since it has 40 volumes to tell the same story as 7 episodes. The worldbuilding is terrible with little explanation for anything. Everyone has extreme plot armor even random side characters. Lots of anime tropes here like silly love triangles and laughably evil bad guys. It's not the worst show, but I won't be recommending it.

And just like there, there is another OVA from the Golden Era I am unsure about. These older OVAs, when OVAs were the actual definition of OVAs, are a little hit and miss. Now I've written 'OVA' enough for one review, I'll explain why I believe this is hit and miss.
We are quickly thrusted into the story. We have a young girl (Pai) who has been searching for a boy (Yakumo), turns him into her Wu and then they embark on a journey of turning Pai human. The word 'journey' however I would take with a pinch of salt. There really isn't much of a journey at all. Episode one focuses on the turning of Yakomo into an Immortal Wu but didnt really give me any shock value, or immotional impact something like this has on a character. It's a little unfair to draw this comparison, considering the differe…

As of writing this review, I've yet to see the other OVA in this series so it may be updated. What you need to know is that this is a great story for any fan of paranormal thriller series, and that despite it's age both the graphics and audio hold up very well, but that's about where it falls off.
A great story with likable characters and a great sense of actual character development despite the shows length, but that's the issue. From what I understand, this was a fairly large manga and the story should not have been adapted into so few episodes. It's so rushed it doesn't really hook the viewer and watching it felt forced at parts, but it's definitely worth it at the end.
When I heard about this I really wanted to give it a higher rating, and I feel that my bias towards the genre and o…

Overview:
3x3 Eyes is a series most older anime fans have heard of, but relatively few have actually seen. The manga is a 40 volume epic that ran from 1987 to 2002. In the United States, Dark Horse adapted the first few volumes of the manga thanks to some generous financing by rock musician Rob Zombie. Thanks Rob! Unfortunately, nobody bought it and Dark Horse soon cancelled. Basically, this was never a very popular franchise in America despite the best efforts of a certain Hellbilly. On the other hand, 3x3 Eyes was a huge hit in Japan and I guarantee you've all seen tropes that this series started.
Adaptation issues:
I mentioned the manga was 40 volumes, but guess how long the anime is? Just 7 episodes! The first OVA is 4 episodes and the second is 3 episodes! Both OVA series were mad…

I enjoyed this very much, the story was quite endearing, the characters where enjoyable, it had a very nice balance of gory/spooky/comedy/charm, it kept me wanting more. My only complaint was I wish it where longer, however there is much to be said to the fact of "short and sweet", I do feel that any added length could have brought a bitterness to it. In some cases things being short and leaving me wanting more typically means I am not fully satisfied with it, however in this case the desire for more added to the experience and wrapped it up nicely. Over All I highly recommend it, it kinda reminded me of anime like Devil Hunter Yokho, or Slayers. Or even a hint of Birdy the Mighty.

It all starts off with a good amount of intrigue, some good music, and a bit of excitement before really going in-depth, so getting hooked isn't difficult at all. From there, it moves rather smoothly back and forth between more intriguing story development and more action, maintaining a pretty nice balance between the two. The progression of the story all seems relevant to the overall point, which is especially nice since it was only four episodes. My slightly lower rating for character is perhaps a bit unfair since it only had four episodes, and it still did portray characters I liked for sure, but they weren't exactly groundbreaking. All said by the time I was finished watching it, I could hardly believe it was so short. It felt as though they had done more with four episodes than many s…

I was blown away by the story and action , i really liked how well rounded and indepth all the characters were.
Yakumo is one of my favorite characters of all time .
i've seen the series in the english dub and thought it was really good, i saw it on tv and vhs i only wish i could get a dvd of 3x3 eyes.

It became one of my all time favs ever since i bought it on tape back in 1995! and well, violent as hell but a good story line backs it up nicely, especially if a boy gets involved in something very unusual. The animation and resolution is somewhat ´classic gritty´, dark spotted and not everyone´s taste but hey it was 1991 so better deal with it! Music is sometimes a bit lowfi and cassette´s , still nice oldskool though. charac. have a good but (for most side chara.) fast introduction to get involved in the story, and for the villians some parts really scared me, specially the demons giving a horrifying feeling to it, nicely done because u don't have things like that anymore in anime these days, damn shame

This is a classic and brilliantly executed OVA, its fast paced while keeping the plot simple and understandable. Unlike a lot of anime this one stays true to the atmosphere there isn't many minutes where there isn't a demon on the attack. so no long breaks at a nice hot spring. The quietest moments are after a victory or before the plot even gets going.
The gripping settings and dark themes are a really awesome display in this anime. The art style is very well done for backgrounds, the city and mountain ranges are really well drawn. some of the characters are pretty simple. Demons are really well created each one being very uniquely done. Lots of Bones, claws, exo skeletons and eyes.
Animation and sound is done in the style of the mid 80s of animation so its all of a great quality! tho a b…

3x3 eyes is a hit written by Takada Yuzo. During its time it had a huge impact, getting several video games and a couple OVAs This one from Toei animation. The second from Studio Junio. It would have even had a full tv series but that was prevented by censorship laws, which may be a good illustration to my "censorship is evil" belief but it's been largely forgotten with the passage of time. The question is, why was it so big and does it hold up today?
3x3 Eyes is the story of a three eyed demon named Pai who comes to Japan to find Fuji Yakumo, the son of a professor who promised her that his son would help make her human in his place. To save his life she turns him into an immortal demon, which is lucky for him since he takes damage that should kill him a lot, and the two head to Hong Kon…

3x3 eyes is originally a supernatural manga series of the same name, which spans over 40 volumes, but this OVA made in 1991 gives us a taster of the manga by covering the first two volumes. And they do this quite well, firstly by not falling into the trap of trying to give us a conclusion and neither does it rely on previous knowledge of the manga, which many short running OVAs of long running mangas do. It does exactly what it should do, introduce newcomers to the world of 3x3 eyes and let fans already of the series get an idea of what an anime adaption of the whole series would possibly (and hopefully) look like.
3x3 eyes is about Yakumo, a sixteen year old student, who is working in a gay bar, as a cross-dresser in order to make ends meet. He meets Pai, an immortal, who has been sent b…

This anime looks old and sounds even older. Although the animation and sound quality both come off as rather dated, the former is still quite pleasant whilst the same cannot be said for the latter. The voice acting is also quite unrefined by today's standards, but the sound track absolutely kicks ass, sporting a range of different tracks from oriental style instrumental pieces to jazzy, upbeat vocal songs.
The contents of "3x3 Eyes" reminds me slightly of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", as it involves a couple of people going around killing weird monsters, but it's more bloody than Buffy. The action scenes are pretty awesome, but the storyline's pretty thin: they slay monsters in order to obtain this statue of humanity thing. And then in the next episode, the statue gets lost again so they en…

My first question after I finished this anime was,"Why isnt this anime longer?" The manga stretches on for over 40 volumes and they only went up to volume five.
All that aside, this anime is first rate. Yuzo Takada Sensei claims this series to be his masterpiece. Those of you eager enough to watch this anime, but can't stand bad animation, I beg of you, power through the first 4 episodes. The real treat is the second part. Quailty animation awaits. More than that is the story. 3x3 Eyes has one of the best plots in any anime. Also, the character development is beyond words. The hero, Yakumo, changes dramatically to the point of wondering if this is really the same person. In the good way of course.
Overall I gave it a 9. I don't give 9s, they are earned.
