Introduction
Also known as Manual of Ninja Martial Arts, the only animation from Japanese New Wave maestro Nagisa Oshima is as provocative as one would expect from such a remarkable filmmaker. The film follows Sanpei Shirato's classic comic story about the son of an assassinated feudal lord in the Muromachi period, who attempts to avenge his father's death and meets Kagemaru, a renegade ninja helping peasants and farmers rebel against Oda Nobunaga's regime.

While this is certainly not a masterpiece, it is an interesting peek into the development of anime and a cool artifact from the era. Unlike what others have said, there is quite a bit of animation in this short pilot, though it is lacking color. This leads to a surprisingly astute presentation for something that didn’t see the light of day for thirty years.
It’s no doubt worth the watch at a runtime of only one minute and forty seconds. If you are a fan of anime history, old anime and how anime is made, then this is certainly a good anime for you.

Band of Ninja is a 1967 manga film from experimental live action film director Nagisa Oshima. It’s not a mistake I didn’t say animated since there is not a single moving image in the film. Oshima filmed manga stills attempting to give the illusion of animation through basic filming techniques like quick cuts and plain cinematography. Resulting in failure from its own execution from attempting to cover a large story without the proper length to accomplish it being rushed consistently in the story department.
