Kaiju No. 8

Kaiju No. 8

Introduction

After the destruction of their hometown, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro make a pact to become officers in the Defense Force—a militarized organization tasked with protecting Japan from colossal monsters known as "kaijuu." Decades later, the 32-year-old Kafka has all but given up on his dreams of heroism. Instead, he cleans up the remains of the slaughtered kaijuu after they are defeated by valiant soldiers—including Mina, who has successfully achieved their shared goal. Upon meeting his new coworker, Reno Ichikawa, Kafka faces a mirror of his past self: an ambitious young man whose one desire is to fight as a member of the Defense Force. Unfortunately, the two are soon involved in a freak encounter with a rogue kaijuu. Though Kafka demonstrates his innate heroic nature and rescues Reno from certain doom, he is left gravely injured. While both men recover in a hospital, Kafka is seemingly attacked by another one of the beasts. As a result, he gains the ability to transform into a humanoid kaijuu with the strength and powers of the massive monsters menacing Japan. Dubbed "Kaijuu No. 8" by the military, Kafka resolves to use his newfound gifts for the greater good. Tied together by mutual respect, Kafka and Reno set out to join warriors like Mina at the forefront of the Defense Force. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The rating system in artistic media is meant to order the quality and enjoyability of a piece, so we are obliged to compare pieces of art between each other, as shows with similar rating should be comparable in quality and content. Now, I'll keep it a buck and make the rest of this review quick: this is just My Hero Academia retold with even more pathetic characters. I'm not praising nor trashing MHA, it's just that somehow this show is making a cliché of the lame ass talentless, powerless character the peak of the story after being blessed with the ultimate power bestowed upon them, which is also a curse as using it has consequences for the main character, but the MC still uses it because they have an inherently heroic personality, but they are not alone as they are also surrounded by o…

When I first heard this was getting an anime, I was excited I hadn't read the manga but the idea of a military going up against kaiju was an interesting idea, more so if they could figure out how to work kaiju vs. kaiju battles into it. I was a little skeptical of all the fancy little tricks they were doing (like displaying it on X, the everything app, and giving it YUNGBLUD and OneRepublic for an OP and ED) but surely it'd be good, right? Right? I think one thing this show is kinda really bad at is making compelling characters. Solo Leveling gets shit on a lot for "name 3 characters from Solo Leveling" but frankly, I don't think Kaiju is much better. Before I get into the main character (because I have Thoughts on him) and Kikoru, I'll briefly discuss the other characters. Ichikawa…

Pristine animation, banger soundtrack, cool aesthetic; the production team seems to be doing everything they can to polish the packaging, covering how bland and uninspired the content inside is. Kaijuu No. 8 felt like an imposter syndrome in the Shounen landscape. It unashamedly has all the tropes of tokusatsu and the recently popular cliches for a power-scaling battle anime, yet doesn't know how to craft their own identity out of them. Opened with a promising sequence of midlife-crisis protagonist filleting a dead kaiju; sadly, that is the only instance an organic thing happened in this series. Because that interesting sector of world-building is immediately thrown out of the window once we get to punch a monster, Attack on Titan style, with the power level of Mob Psycho 100, weaponry f…

Kaijuu Mid-Gou Let us engage the mind's eye.... Imagine you have your typical shounen story about defeating monsters but replace your quintessential, teenage, hot-headed, dumbass, boystrous and loud over-the-top MC with a middle-aged man. You are probably thinking; Wow! Lucky me, what a treat! The most annoying part of shounen is gone and we can enjoy some good story-telling with a realistic edge, a focus on strategy rather than boring obligitory 1v1 fights mid-piece style. You'll hope that the writer will explore deeper into physical and anatomical aspects of the monsters to give a more immersive and engaging edge to such a classic shounen genre. Surely they can't possibly screw this up right? Wrong. What we got was exactly the same archetype of MC we're used to but now we can bombar…

Kaiju No.8 is a meticulously crafted anime that knows its target audience well. Production IG demonstrates their expertise through grand battle sequences, passionate character personalities, and music (including theme songs) that perfectly complements the plot. After watching the first three episodes, it's clear the studio is in their comfort zone. However, this polished production comes with a sense of homogeneity. Much like a "decent enough" Hollywood blockbuster, the plot progression feels predictable and doesn't leave a particularly lasting impression. That said, watching Kaiju No. 8 is thoroughly enjoyable, sprinkled with deliberately placed moments of humor throughout. On the surface, Kaiju No.8 attempts to differentiate itself from typical shonen manga. Episode 1 delves into reali…

5.5/10 Decent action show without the convoluted nonsense. This show was good to binge and I got through the 1st season in one sitting. Honestly this show doesn't bring too much new to the table and feels like a tried and true formula. - Decent enough animation, definitely sub par in fights to JJK or Chainsawman, but still pretty good. -- the action itself was decent enough, passed the better then DBZ test - The pacing was actually phenomenal, never felt slow or rushed - The plot was typical Shonen nonsense of being accepted and the best, but with friends - World building was acceptable and there was very little exposition dumbs to bore you - Themes of fighting monsters was fine, w/ tech that seems logical enough - Charecters were all pretty standard with nothing to write home about,…

Great show, I was impatiently waiting for every episode to come out. I watched the show with the english dub. The characters are well written and the english dub makes them more lifelike by using older gen Z slangs. I also find that the dub managed to make me chuckle with every joke, while the sub often made them alot less funny. The art is nice, the characters have an unique look, the environment is detailed and the animation is pretty good. The music is great and one song managed to get into my running playlist. The studio changed up alot from the manga for the better, the combat encounters are easier to understand while at the same time having more depth.

I wasn't expecting this at first. A 32 year old guy protagonist, yeah right! Even though he's not cool, he never gives up! I mean, he can't work that hard after he's over 30, so it's really amazing! My 23 year old brother knows exactly how that feels! It's so funny! It's grotesque, it's serious, and most of all, it's hilarious! And most of all, it's hilarious! Everyone has a good sense of humor. And the rhythm of the laughter is also very good 👌. I'm not going to spoil the story for you. I'll give you a brief description. The main character is chasing his dream. No way! happens And while searching for the truth while seeking the truth of the situation. And there is also a bond between friends. It's a bit like Naruto, which I used to watch a long time ago (the part where you care abo…

As an adult cast military themed anime this deservers a 1. This is mostly inspired from gacha games, where each character has a combat power which even affects the strength of the bullets they fire. Every character portrayed, commanders included, show a severe lack of tactics or strategy. The only tactics that ever work are those that use brute force. And for some reason nobody in the cast has bothered to research their enemies or their weaknesses. Apparently that is the only way the MC can be shown to not be completely useless, because it's truly hard for everyone to remember that the abdomen or the back are the weaknesses of certain types of monsters. Maybe they all have a side job of being games journalists. Another such example is with a side character which for some reason is the on…

I had great expectations going in, seeing all the buzz about this show on social media, but it does not live up to the hype. The greatest flaw of Kaijuu No.8 is that it does not do anything original apart from the premise. You've seen it a million times already, and you'll see it here: manufactured drama, bad characterizations and poor dynamics between protagonists. The story holds up to an ~8 until half-way through, but does a dive after that. I think the writer wants you to like Mina, Hoshina and the other supporting characters, but, as said, they all have poor relations with the protagonist and a lot of manufactured drama ensues because everybody stonewalls each other. And, just like other cookie cutter stories, Hibino has to keep proving himself over and over again like a monkey at…

One word: Generic. It's not a bad anime, but it's not particularly interesting either. It should be renamed to Frankenstein No. 8 because it's basically a mix of various successful anime tropes. Though, to be fair, it's likely those successful anime/manga got inspiration from other works as well. That said, it does quite a few things right so it's at least enough to attract attention: ✔ Decent comedy, about 50% of the funny scenes were funny enough to cause my body to excrete air a bit stronger than usual ✔ Great animations for the major fight scenes ✔ Nice music for some characters like Kikoru Shinomiya ✔ Good power scale. This isn't Bleach or DBZ where the character gains a massive power up one scene and the next they're struggling to erect themselves. There's a firm hierarchy Howeve…

Are you feeling down because of the bad anime you've watched lately? So I recommend this anime to watch! At first I didn't expect anything good from the anime, and was just looking for a little information about what this anime contained, starting from the synopsis, pictures and so on, then I got the Imagine that this anime will only tell about a man who works as a cleaner for the remains of Kaijuu killings. But it turns out my guess was wrong, this is one of the best anime this season in my opinion, Even though there is no Comedy genre, this anime actually contains comedy which will make you laugh when you watch it and I guarantee you can't get bored. What's even better is that anime makers know where the comedy should appear, so it doesn't look strange, doesn't appear randomly and inst…

6/10 - You know what's worse than a bad show? One that doesn't live up to its potential. Kaiju Nr. 8 has multiple great premises. 1. The setting is ala Pacific Rim in the sense that Kaiju are a part of living in this modern day world (but is taken and treated as much less seriously than in Pacific Rim, almost laughably so). 2. The equipment of the Kaiju hunting squads are based on materials made from Kaiju with a great story point in that they're only as effective as how well the person uses them or are compatible with them. 3. The main character's powers are handled well, there's a great sense of mystery, it becomes a story point that he has to contend with what he is and the extent of his powers are only revealed as necessary, since he can't really practice his form. 4. Interesting Ka…

This is seriously one of the greatest anime you can watch today. The action is just so good, the plot keeps you glued to the screen, and the character development from just these 12 episodes is amazing to observe. We start the show out not knowing what to expect, but right away, Kaiju No. 8 shows you what kind of world we're in, what kind of character our protagonist is, and what the main dilemma is. This helps keep the viewer coming back every week for a new episode. There isn't a single wasted episode on this season. All 12 of these episodes are spectacular, balancing beautiful and intense action with stressful and meaningful complications that reveal the humanity of all of our characters. You should not miss this series, especially this season. For being only 12 episodes, this season…

What makes a story good? Is it the animation? Picture quality? Art style? Sound? Well no, duh, its THE STORY! And well, far too many anime seem to forget that... Honestly i'm not sure at this point who the target audience for this, and many other shows is, because it feels like i've seen this show at least twenty times over before ever watching it! There isn't much to be said about it honestly.. What are the strong sides? Well, as i said, art, animation, and generally great production values. What are the weak sides? The most important - story and characters! Well, if you can call them that, they're cardboard cutouts at best - the stereotypical tsundere, the classic average anime protagonist, and his friend, the classic average anime protagonist #2... NOTHING new or original about them…

Kaijuu 8-gou is perfect evidence that an anime can, indeed, be carried by the animation. It's no secret that this show is one of the most blatant attempts at getting American money funneled into anime, what with the streaming on Twitter deal and the bands brought in for the atrocious songs in the show, but even ignoring the blatant tech bro shilling with their insane AstroTurfing on it, this show is just bad. I’m to the point of saying this show should be renamed to AstroTurfing The Animation, because it’s one of the most blatant cases of artificial hype I’ve seen, to the point I’ve never seen anyone even mention this show despite its supposed success. Let's start by listing the one positive aspect of this show, it looks great, Production IG continues showing why they're the top of the in…

I don’t think there’s been an anime that’s received as much commercial hype and build up as Kaiju number 8. I mean Crunchyroll literally had a countdown clock on the app for every episode, it was the first anime to ever be simulcast on Twitter, episodes launched first in North America and a freaking One Republic ED?!! Sony/Crunchyroll put a lot of effort into this and while I was skeptical given some of their other projects, this actually lived up to all the hype and even surpassed expectations. It’s without a doubt one of jump’s best products and one of the best shows of the year. With Toho’s Godzilla franchise and the western monsterverse doing so well in the last few years, the idea of a Kaiju based anime really stood out to me and got me excited. I tried to go in as blind as possible…

Among anime debuting this year targeting the shounen demographic, there's no shadow of a doubt that Kaiju No. 8 has been one of the biggest shows. Based on the manga of the same name, there are numerous reasons as to why this got so hyped. Even Crunchyroll and Twitter decided to livestream this anime live to a global audience at the same time as Japan. It's not an overexaggeration to say Kaiju No. 8 does have some selling points to deserves its hype. If the name Naoya Matsumoto sounds unfamiliar to you, fear not, as I'm sure many are on the same boat. Their previous work didn't attract mainstream attention but now, he put his name well on the map. Kaiju No. 8's plot revolves around a fictional Japan being attacked by monsters known as Kaiju. These gargantuan monsters have devastated mank…

One word comes to mind when I think about how to describe this anime: disappointing. It has a rather unique setting, but instead of doing something with it the author made the most generic shounen possible. Let me give you a bit more details here. World. What did I expect after reading the description and watching the first episode? Humans fighting against giant monsters that emerge from time to time and wreak havoc on cities and countries, or maybe something even more dire, like existential threat to humanity (like in AOT). Sadly, in this world real kaijus are more of a background noise, there are no special defences or architecture solutions to minimise the damage (walls, some kind of detection perimeters for early warning), cities look exactly like any city in our reality and the only…
