Undead Unluck

Introduction

With the conclusion of her favorite romance manga, Fuuko Izumo is ready to end her life of misery and loneliness having long accepted her fate of never being able to experience passionate love like fictional characters. Cursed with "unluck," anyone Fuuko touches is in grave danger of experiencing unimaginable calamity. While the possibility of imminent danger would have most sane people run in the opposite direction, Undead has other ideas. He is an immortal being with superhuman regenerative powers desperately seeking death, which has always eluded him. When their paths finally cross, Undead sees an opportunity to finally end his suffering by using Fuuko's unluck. But before Undead can unlock the full potential of Fuuko's power to trigger the final devastating blow, the duo must first fend off a murderous secret organization hell-bent on exterminating those with special abilities. Not only is Undead Unluck uncomfortable to watch, even for veterans like myself, but it also has so many strange elements that I don't know where to begin. Even if you drop it after the first few episodes, I couldn't blame you. The unnecessary sexualization, the repeated allusions to "sexual abuse," the exaggerated personalities of the characters, and even the awkward animation and use of powers—and I don't mean exaggerated in a good way. Obviously, at this point, we have to address the elephant in the room, and that is the constant and repetitive use of flashbacks, summaries, and recaps. We're not talking about a flashback from episode 3 that's brought up in episode 15; we're talking about flashbacks that remind you of things you already saw in the previous episode, or even two minutes b…

Falls short of its potential, for me. As in, there's a tangible drop-off in production value and pacing as soon as we hit episode two, and things never recover much from there, except for the smallest of moments in the final episodes. The comedic bits seemed interesting in how they successfully incorporated the story's more fantastical elements, and the show hits you with many mysteries about its world and inner workings, but the painful budget loss is too much to ignore - I'm being charitable, and assuming it IS a budget matter, because the studio definitely had the potential to make something really good, yet we are still getting punched in the face with still frames, voice-overs on empty camera pans, endless reaction shots - god, more than a quarter of some episodes is just recap, are y…

I think Undead Unluck is one of my guilty pleasures. I had a lot of fun with the first season, which was mainly due to the interaction between Fuuko and Andy. The humor they both have is really strong and made me laugh more than once. The side characters are also very good, like Juiz, Viktor, Gina and Billy, who get really good stories and moments. Gina in particular gives you two very strong and emotional episodes. The manga plot is also something so creative, which I really liked and was my favorite part of the story, with Andy's backstory and Gina. If you can get involved with Undead Unluck, you'll get a lot of humor, fun fights and really good characters.

So, the Undead Unlcuk anime. In short, this one's a grower, not a shower. The animation is solid but you can see where it was held back by it's mediocre budget. In the first few episodes the characters may be quite off putting, with our supposed "protagonist" repeatedly SA'ing a teen girl. And yeah I'll be honest, the manga also had a rough start for the same reasons. But, if you can get through the first 7 or 8 episodes, you'll start seeing the surprisingly complex relationships between these characters and the awesome power system that is driving the action. Andy's regeneration powers are like wolverine to the 10th power, and most of the other powers are also pretty unique (if named in a kind of dumb way). Also, Fukko really comes into her own and develops as a character through the mang…

Undead Unluck feels like it was made in a lab to appeal to Shonen Jump readers. But I think that in their attempt to find a new series to rival their biggest titles, they've failed to understand what made their most successful titles so good. As a result, new Jump series like Undead Unluck feel too manufactured. There's no heart in this show. It's uninspired. It feels like it's just checking off boxes in order to catch the attention of the magazine itself. If this is your first time watching a Shonen Jump anime, you'll probably enjoy it. But if you've already watched Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece, then you'll easily be able to identify all the ways this show is trying to imitate them. Despite how hard it's trying to be unique, everything that occurs in this show is just... boring and unmem…

It had a promising start... but later... Undead unluck has an interesting premise. "Negaters", instead of having a super power they Negate an existing concept. Undead, doesn't die. Unluck, project bad luck. Unstoppable, goes roadrunner and so on. Interesting concept, fun powers with a bit of mystery added as the viewer has to guess at them. Had the show stopped there it would have been a serviceable action/comedy Shonen. Sadly as the season went on we ended up with poor pacing, leaps in logic, lack of consequences and main character syndrome... oddly from the female lead of all people. It had an idea and the battles were fun. The plotline and character interaction (with anyone other than each other!) needed some fine toning. The relationship between people made zero sense consideri…

Undead Unluck is an ambitious anime that strives to distinguish itself with its unique premise and grand storytelling, but unfortunately, it struggles to reach its potential. The series ventures into uncharted territory with a story that promises more than it delivers, resulting in a mixed experience. At the heart of Undead Unluck is the relationship between its two main characters, but the anime falters in this regard. While it aims to explore their bond, most of the character development remains superficial. Significant growth is only attempted in the final episodes, and even then, it feels rushed and lacks the emotional depth needed to make a lasting impact. The tone of the season is another stumbling block. The anime oscillates between somber, impactful moments and jarring, misplaced…

In short, definitely worth watching! The power system in this anime is one of the best of the new-gen anime. It's easier to grasp (unlike some anime where you have to pretend that you know the power system). There were many moments where I was taken aback because of the twists. It exceeded whatever expectations I had and came out to be one of my favorite new-gen anime. The world-building is mind-blowing; it's a concept not much used, and if done perfectly, it could be one of the best. The characters are just awesome; you'll fall in love with them for sure. Each character has a unique trait, and you'll feel connected to them in no time. The plot has a great potential to become one of the best new-gen anime if adapted well, which you can be sure of since it's DP we're talking about. The…

Well, this is a damn masterpiece. I've never seen a worldbuilding even close to be this unique and interesting. I don't even know where to start. The characters and their dynamics is literally everything. I usually dislike romantic subplot in shounen animes but this shit made me blush everytime our main couple interacted. Fuuko is adorable and Andy is a frickin' gentleman, periodt. I love the "polar opposites bring out the best in eachother" trope and it really works well in this setting. I especially love Andy's character because he sure has this "bad guy" vibe (which fits him perfectly) and still be a decent likable human being. Love that. There's just the right amount of edginess no more, no less. Another green flag about this anime, is how different and diverse each character is. Uniqu…

TLDR: I give it props for not being an absolute cookie cutter shonen and I LOLed more than a few times. This show has a slightly less used story mechanics mixed in with quirky characters and comedic visuals. The story starts off with what appears to be a random encounter of our 2 main characters. The girl (Fuuko) is ready to end it all because she is imbued with the ability to bring anyone she touches bad luck, to the point of fatality depending on how much she touches them and how much she likes them, making her existence lonely as one would imagine. The guy (Andy) cannot die as he will regenerate, meaning he's lived way to long and just wants to die. Antics ensue as Andy now think if he has sexy with Fuuko, he will finally end it all. This springboard starts the world building as to who…

This anime was delightful! With a fresh perspective on self-acceptance, regardless of a person's (negator's) abilities or disadvantages, each character rises above their unchangeable circumstances to maintain a fragile balance between 'god-like' power and complete destruction. Falling under several genres of action, comedy, gore, fantasy and romance, there is something here for everyone. The characters throughout the series are unique, and take their time to properly develop complex relationships. Great animation, well choreographed fight scenes, fun OST and a fast passed (rather messy) storyline, that keeps viewers on their toes. Not to mention, the back-and-forth between character's dialogue is hilarious, their quips and awkward personalities are down right charming. It's no lie, the…

It’s a pretty interesting story with a world of rules and negators who have powers (mostly unwillingly) to negate them. The plot by itself sounded fun but I don’t think he watched an anime earlier that brings together shounen and shojo elements so well. Undead Unluck is fast paced and keeps you interested throughout. I love the concept, the characters and their development. It’s funny, romantic, action packed and has leads you actually feel for. Andy seems initially as a beefy guy with no feels, and Fuko the quintessential shounen FL - all boobs and no use. But interestingly, their characters unveil to be both powerful and lovable. The use of little ecchi is also pretty tastefully done. 10/10 recommend.

Undead Unluck is a great action comedy shounen. It has a great storyline with more arcs to follow. The screenplay is superb with each character being given enough depth as needed by that chraracter. The characters grow with time and do not stay stagnant. The action sequences are amazing. The humor is little bit of gag and timing based comedy. The overall plotline is wonderful and truly enjoyable. This show is for adult audience not for kids. (NSFW at times and characters/plots are too mature for kids to understand) Definitely watch this show if you are into action comedy fantasy genre.

At first glance when the trailer dropped for Undead Unluck, I had initially written it off. It seemed unique though, and that stuck with me. 4 weeks into its airing, I saw good reception, so I gave it a shot. I can now say It was worthy of watching after having just completed the first season. First and foremost, it's a 24-episode season, no pauses. God bless David Production for directing this properly. The first season has proper story building and leaves the viewer with anticipation to the continuation of this story. The series has proper time to develop both story and characters and has an intriguing premise and development of negators on both sides of the conflict. This is how you do anime properly. Animation 9/10 - The animation isn't the best of the best, but it does a lot right, b…

This anime has many good things, but in one way or another it manages to generate rejection. Undead Unluck is a rollercoaster of likes and dislikes. The work is designed so that, regardless of your preferences, you find one or two elements that capture your attention. At the same time, since it wants to cover more topics than it can handle, you will inevitably also encounter elements that will make it difficult for you to move forward with the story. Some decisions and devices used in the story seem more like a cry of "Please look at me again" than trying to tell a meaningful story. The protagonists go from bad to good, at first they have no chemistry at all and the interactions (quite physical interactions that border on harassment) are uncomfortable for the viewer. Andy starts out as a…

A few years ago, David production were working on a new shounen title called Fire force. Long story short, it was a decent watch dragged down to mediocrity by one major flaw, the fanservice. The show couldn't resist shoving tits and ass right in your face every few minutes, even in the most inopportune of times, like the middle of a fight. It honestly amazes me just how much damage this decision managed to do. It's a damn shame, since the rest of Fire force was solid, but this single decision managed to change my rating from very good to above average. So how is any of this relevant? Well, imagine Fire force with mediocre fights, completely fucked pacing, constant changes in tone resulting in massive whiplash and plot contrivances through the roof. That show is called Undead unluck. I get…

Undead Unluck had eye-catching setting about the world and character abilities; the idea of "deniers" was really refreshing. Although not every plot withstood scrutiny, it was at least interesting and innovative, in the sense that it challenged the viewers' "common sense" - the day-to-day concepts in our lives can be created, revised, and denied. The storytelling followed a very typical shonen style. The main characters continuously level up in battles, learning to better cooperate and utilize their abilities, while also getting trustworthy teammates (with tragic backstories). Even the occasional sexual harassment jokes are so typical (in a bad way) - but fortunately, it gradually shifted away from such jokes and moved towards proper world and character building. The anime adaption left…

The start is strong with solid visual elements laying the foundation of the dark, yet comedic tone of this story-driven series. There are more than a few instances throughout the season where some animation and story-telling choices were questionable. However, it doesn’t take away from the overall experience, and can even add to the enjoyment depending on your own perspective. For those caught up on the manga, having that knowledge further enhances the viewing experience. The series itself is very interesting and worth talking about. With some fine-tuning of the story-boarding for any future seasons that get cleared, the anime can be included in the conversation more in the future.

Undead Unluck is a great battle shounen but it suffers from a beginning that displeased part of the public but mainly because it was distributed by Hulu. In this story we follow Izumo Fuuko, a young woman who, upon meeting Andy, discovers the existence of people who can deny a rule in the world, she is Unlucky as she denies the luck of those she touches and Andy is the Undead as he cannot die in any way. With this information, both go on a journey to free themselves from their powers and end up encountering many challenges and hidden truths of this world. Starting with a negative point, the way Andy initially treats Fuuko is questionable to say the least. Having a man grope a woman without permission is not funny and although this behavior didn't last for many episodes, it lasted long en…

Undead Unluck is one of the coolest action shonen that I’ve ever seen, featuring a fun cast of characters with a diverse and wide range of abilities. While it definitely plays into some traditional shonen tropes, it does more than enough to distinguish itself from its contemporaries and it’s a shame it didn’t garner more attention. At the core of Undead Unluck is the relationship between Andy and Fuuko, two people who have sort have been loners for a long time due to their abilities. We see them come together and bond over mutual trauma and find comfort in one another. While it starts off fanservicey, it develops into one of the best relationships you’ll see in the genre. Two people who support each other’s weaknesses and compliment their strengths. If you can stick thru Andy’s horny sta…
