Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden

Introduction

The Great War finally came to an end after four long years of conflict; fractured in two, the continent of Telesis slowly began to flourish once again. Caught up in the bloodshed was Violet Evergarden, a young girl raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy lines. Hospitalized and maimed in a bloody skirmish during the War's final leg, she was left with only words from the person she held dearest, but with no understanding of their meaning. Recovering from her wounds, Violet starts a new life working at CH Postal Services after a falling out with her new intended guardian family. There, she witnesses by pure chance the work of an "Auto Memory Doll," amanuenses that transcribe people's thoughts and feelings into words on paper. Moved by the notion, Violet begins work as an Auto Memory Doll, a trade that will take her on an adventure, one that will reshape the lives of her clients and hopefully lead to self-discovery. this anime has perfect animation, perfect narrative, perfect story, it depicts topics of grief and trauma in a perfect way. this anime is truly perfect. but in my eyes, it is too perfect to be perfect. this anime is so perfect, i am unable to connect to it as a piece of art, it is too clean and polished, and too perfect for my taste it is a perfect anime to make people cry, it is scientifically engineered to make people cry actually. that's truly perfect. it is still great though and i have cried a lot (by japanese scientific methods), but it really wish it was less perfect and had more of stupid human mistakes from the point of art in it for the sake of art 8/10

Honestly, I’m still trying to process the emotional weight of this show. I don't think I've ever felt this heavily, deeply attached to an anime before. Violet Evergarden isn't just something you watch for entertainment; it’s something you actively survive emotionally. It completely shatters your defenses, leaves you crying your eyes out, and then somehow patches you back together. The story follows Violet, a former child soldier who basically functions like a machine, as she becomes an "Auto Memoir Doll"—someone who writes letters for people who can't find the right words to express their feelings. Watching her journey from a blank slate trying to understand what "I love you" means, to someone who feels the deep, aching pain of human emotion, is just beautiful. The animation by Kyoto Anima…

Violet Evergarden not only holds vibrant, picturesque visuals, but the story it follows is one which never loses sight of its identity and what it's trying to say. There is an episodic nature to the series, where it feels as if things aren't precisely connected, yet the growth of the main character throughout links everything together, akin to the ATLA viewing experience. The struggles of the characters are relatable and seemingly have care taken to not be overstated. Particularly, the dialogue does not stretch itself trying to navigate every corner of a issue, rather it is comfortable with repeating itself, which ends up feeling realistic to me and how I verbalise my issues.

This is the story of a girl who saw her Commanding Officer die on the battlefield. After she wakes up in the hospital, she desperately tries to understand what his last words meant: "I love you." In order to find the meaning behind those words, she decides to work at a post office in Leiden (fictional German location). Because of the war, the demand for postal services have never been higher. Violet works as an "Auto Memory Doll," which is kinda like your modern-day transcriber. She writes letters on behalf of people who can't read or write. Ever since she was enlisted in the army, Violet only saw herself as a weapon, a tool to be used on the battlefield. As a result, she has difficulty interpreting social cues, emotions, or human feelings. This poses a challenge for her clients, and her c…

Mild and unspecific spoilers. After halfway through episode 3 I was ready to give up on this show but then I found the speed control. 2x speed makes it much better, I don't think I could've finished otherwise. It stopped the constantly frustrated feeling that the show was written for or by children and the constant how/why dissections. So much dead air. I'm not soaking in the vibes though at times the visuals are quite beautiful. It's not comfortable silence because it's sandwiched by filler/meaningless dialogue every episode that could be better used. Every character has just enough context to yank your chain. It's tearjerk-bait, and it's admittedly good at that. I have some pity to give. The switching between episodic and plot based episodes leaves me with the same empty feeling I had…

I basically rated it based on the amount of times I've cried, which may have been higher It's been always sitting in my watchlist, but I finally made time to give this a fair shot, and wow. I don't think I remember an anime which has made me as emotional as this in a while. The art? the music? the settings? the characters? Kyoto animation really outdid themselves with this adaptation. And, tbh, that is what makes this show hit so differently,, when an anime manages to break down your walls like that episode after episode, you know you are witnessing something truly special. Watching Violet piece together what it actually means to feel, to grieve, and to love while helping people find the words they couldn't say themselves was a deeply moving premise for me, and not only that, each ind…

(Sorry if I made any mistakes. It's been years since I've seen it, but I just had to come back and complain.) Words cannot describe how much I loathe this anime. The setting is mostly episodic, which isn't bad in itself, but the problem lies in the fact that the characters shown are made of cardboard at best. If you're familiar with the backrooms, allow me to explain: the characters are still lifes. They have all the basic properties of characters, family, personal struggle, etc, but they aren't really characters. Not in the sense we'd understand them. They are non-note vehicles to make you cry, and nothing more. It is difficult to make you care about characters in one episode, sure, but it can't be that hard. This anime is emotional manipulation. The very premise of a supposedly cute…

IT BREAKS YOUR EMOTIONAL BARRIER Are you someone who doesn't usually get emotional watching movies, anime, TV shows, etc.? This anime is going to change you! At first, I didn't think the anime was anything special, but it got more and more interesting with each episode until it reached the fateful episode 10. That episode is incredibly moving and touches anyone who watches it, and after that episode—boom—your emotional defenses are shattered, and you start getting emotional much more easily over just about anything, including the subsequent episodes and the movie. Not only that, but the anime grows on you more and more every day after you watch it. Here I am, writing this 8 months after finishing the anime, and I think it gets better and better. The fact that it makes you feel things yo…

I tried to hold back my tears. Dang, I really tried but the stories were just too melancholically beautiful. Violet Evergarden was a package of emotions, stirring something within. A slice of life that offers empathy and tears rather than the usual gags and laughter. It's just kind of hard to believe that she's just 14 years old in this series. She does not look like it. A character that is not that curvy and perfect looking would have been nice, considering that she's an ex-military who've been through everything. Anyway, her dress is so chic. The story also explored and developed the side characters. Aside from them, I like that minor character Leon, the transcriber. In my opinion, Violet should have ended with him. Her ending could have been better. This is much recommended. Don’t w…

- VIOLET EVERGARDEN: LIKE A BARTENDER BUT WITH LETTERS There's this idea that bartenders aren't just there to pour drinks. People sit down, talk about their lives, complain about work, grieve someone they've lost, or confess things they've never said out loud. Sometimes the bartender gives advice. Sometimes they don't. Most of the time, they just listen. In this case, Violet feels surprisingly similar. Every time someone hires her to write a letter, they're not really asking for someone with good handwriting. They're asking for someone who can understand what they're too overwhelmed to say. Take Princess Charlotte, for example. She was entering a political marriage with Prince Damian, and every letter between them sounded stiff and formal. Violet realized that what was missing wasn't bet…

When I finished Violet Evergarden, I wasn't really sure whether I wanted to give it an 8 or a 9. Even now, I still think it sits somewhere in between because while I really enjoyed it, there are still a few things that keep it from being a 9 for me. The first thing that stands out is the production quality. Kyoto Animation did a great job with the visuals, the soundtrack fits every scene well, and the pacing never feels too slow or too fast, which made the whole series enjoyable to watch. Violet's character development is probably my favorite part of the anime because you can clearly see her changing as the story progresses. At the beginning she barely understands other people's emotions, but every person she meets teaches her something new, making her growth feel natural instead of happ…

MINI REVIEW: Initially in episode 1, I wasn't really sold by this anime due to the main character's lack of emotion...but as it progresses we do get good reasons as to why she is like this. Of course the visuals and animation is beautiful (especially like whenever Violet is in combat or the scene where she is on water with an umbrella). I am glad to see an era like this represented in an anime which is not isekai nor a (huge) fantasy in general. The formula of her helping different people, some are hit or miss but standouts include Iris' episode, the (overglazed) episode 10, and yes even the diddyblud episode...just put up a cope saying that it was just the time period and it was normal then I guess (loved when they called back to Iris' episode where we learn how Violet got her name in…

after rewatching this masterpiece, i realised that this anime is what sousou no frieren could've and should've been. i'm specifically comparing this to frieren because the theme of both animes are strikingly similar. yet violet evergarden does it ever so slightly better than frieren. both animes are about a character after a major war goes on a self discovery journey with a melancholic tone. while frieren (season 1) randomly decides to drop this emotional journey completely to do a dungeon crawling arc for a third of a season, violet evergarden stays constant with the tone and emotion throughout the entire series. i appreciate the writing and screenplay of this anime so much more now. the main character's growth through her journey is written in such a masterful way that the ending feels…

Prepare for a lot of tears. Genuinely one of the few animes that have made me cry more times than one. What can I even say that already hasn't veen said before. Beautiful characters, amazing story and wonderful animation. Its no wonder that so many others, including myself, think this anime is amazing! This really is a unique experience and no other animes that I've seen before are quite like this one and thats a compliment! The pacing is perfect and even though you're watching a slice of life show you will never see it as such. Each episode is journey thats perfect from start to finish and leaves you wanting more. Not because the episodes are incomplete but rather you want to see more from these characters and their lives that you're sad to see them go when their journey is done. As…

Violet Evergarden is a masterpiece. This series is filled with so many emotions, many complex characters who each have their own journeys in life. Even as it's a fictional world, it feels so real. You can relate to a lot of characters. The way that Violet herself treats emotions and starts to understand them is so unique, and the way they wrote her is really beautiful. There were moments that I felt like it was predictable, but it's still such a great watch that I do not care. The animation style and music is also really amazing. If you want to watch (which you should do!!!) I recommend preparing some tissues (I cried during the entirety of the 10th episode).

I never write reviews for any of the shows I watch but I had to give this show its flowers. After rewatching this show for the second time, I can confidently say it is an absolute MASTERPIECE. The character development in this show is unrivalled, my personal favourite characters were Violet and Dietfried Bougainvillea. For a 13 episode show I felt like it had so much depth with each episode giving so much emotional development to Violet's character. When you rewatch a show like this, the contrast between Violet's character from start to finish is even more prevalent, this show is 100% worth the watch.

One of the best, the most emotionally engaging anime I've seen. Bring a box of tissues. Artwork and character design is exceptional. If you're going to recommend anime to someone who hasn't watched before and want something with a mature tone, this is the one. The overall story is amazing. It shows consistent character growth of the MC that I was able to empathize with the entire time. The side characters for each of the arcs had compelling stories that drew me in and resonated with personal experiences. An absolute gem amongst the sea of trash we call anime. This one stands head and shoulders above nearly all others.

I put off this show for years because the hype around it made it seem unapproachable, like it was a true masterpiece that needed respect, but after finally watching it for myself (due to its reported similarities to Frieren) I have mixed feelings. It was when the hilariously one-dimensional group the show dubbed "the anti-peace faction" showed up that I really started to question the writing quality of the show. How could something be that bad? The side Violet was forced to fight for used child soldiers and had POW camps, and they want me to hate this nebulous group by giving them a ham-fisted name like "The anti-peace faction"? I laughed out loud. I get that they wanted to make these people seem ontologically evil from the start, but that was so awkward that it made me really think back t…
