The first season of the anime “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon” is a mixed bag. Bishoujo Senshi takes viewers on an emotional roller coaster between “boring and forgettable episodes” and “surprisingly good episodes.” A review from someone who didn’t watch it as a kid, for others in the same boat.
The series’ art is stunning. The opening sequence, music, backgrounds, animation, and commercial breaks—the artists’ work deserves a 10/10. The artists do an especially good job with the color palette and animations. Given the technology of the ’90s, this title is the most beautiful thing that could have been created. The music is authentic and fits the series perfectly. It doesn’t blow your mind, but it very unobtrusively complements the series’ overall aesthetic.
To be brutally honest, it’s hard t…

I have never seen this show as a kid and I've only heard about it or seen clips of it growing up. Watching it now as an adult man, it is not hard for me to understand why this became such a classic.
It's a show from 1992, it shows its age in the animation department but the visuals are still good most of the time. The characters are definitely the highlight since the story is very simple and most of the show does not move the plot forward in any way. Characters are all very enjoyable and play off of each other very well. Ending is also great. Last two episodes are genuinely shocking.
If a show consisting mostly of episodic funny 'monster of the week' plots, focused on love, youth and the friendships between girls, sounds good to you. Give it a shot

It is with a sense of disappointment that the viewing of Sailor Moon comes to an end, a work considered a cult classic and a must-see in the world of magical girls and shoujo. It tells the story of Usagi Tsukino, an ordinary high school girl who encounters a black cat named Luna, who offers her a special brooch allowing her to transform into Sailor Moon, a vigilante fighting the forces of evil. It was with genuine curiosity and openness that the viewing began, and the higher the reputation, the steeper the letdown.
Because Sailor Moon has no shortage of promises. The plot is simple in its premise: young and pretty high school girls transform into beautiful heroines to kick the bad guys' behinds. The intended audience is clearly that of dreamy young girls, especially with the themes of rom…

There may never be a perfect show, but Sailor Moon classic comes so incredibly close. Never have I ever seen another anime that flawlessly mixes together so many genres and themes into its story. One episode can be funny and lighthearted while another can be dazzling and majestic. Those who enjoy action can enjoy the magical girl combat, while those who prefer more grounded stories have the slice of life civilian moments. It's really telling how Sailor Moon, both the manga and anime, would go on to inspire so many more creators.
Need I even mention Moonlight Densetsu, the opening theme? A genius work of music that will stick with you to this day, especially nowadays as anime opening themes start to sound more homogenized.
If you're looking for a classic old-school anime with plenty of m…

I feel like this show, more than any I've ever seen outside of maybe a few comedies, is the most "Saturday Morning Cartoon"-esque series I've ever seen.
The vast majority of these episodes, you could just kind of "flip on" and not really need to think that hard about the plot and, in that respect?
I think by isolated episode, it's a good, enjoyable show.
I think it's funny, the main 3 Scouts (we'll get to the other 2 in a second) and Luna have good chemistry, it has cool moments at times, including a genuinely sad moment with one of the villains.
The problem is if you try to watch it at a pace quicker than, like, 2 episodes a week.
This is not the show to try and watch at any sort of accelerated pace because is it miserable to sit through the exact same scenario like 45 times.

Usagi is anime's ditziest character — which makes for a perfect comfort show.
I've seen a lot of anime protagonists overeat and oversleep, or just be all-around lazy, but unlike a Goku or Luffy or Naruto, when Sailor Moon enters combat or starts training (does she ever actually train?), she remains the same scatterbrained girl in desperate need of an Adderall prescription. She's probably the worst fighter on the team.
And there's nothing particularly special about Usagi at all. You couldn't even call her an average, everyday girl. She's well below average. She constantly fails tests and trips over her own feet. Among the other sailors is the smartest girl in Japan, possibly the strongest, and another who can sense evil auras and banish spirits. Meanwhile, Usagi sucks at the only video ga…

Women in media are not taken seriously unless they are strong, deep, mature and cold, just as men are expected to be. And Sailor Moon is, sometimes, not taken seriously because its protagonists are young, dreamy, passionate, silly and, to a certain extent, frivolous girls. After all, no matter how sexualized they are, they are 14 years old, and it is normal for them to act ACCORDINGLY. At what point did the feelings and experiences of these girls stop being important?
It may seem silly, but Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon uses themes such as clothes, beauty, pop culture and LOVE to show how bad people can take advantage of, and disregard the feelings of young girls.
I like that the sailors are characters who are strong and determined, despite acting like simple "girls". They do not need to…

Never Watched this as a kid and decided to give it a chance earlier this year and overall I think it's fine but at the same time I don't know why so many people glaze this season so much the first half is extremely slow due to the fact that Usagi as a protagonist is boring and annoying as shit I know that she gets better later on but this season has one of the worst first impressions I've seen from an anime the villains are also uninteresting Queen Beryl doesn't do shit until the final two episodes The Four Kings of Heaven sound cool but end up being boring as shit, it also doesn't help that the shows pacing (at least to me) doesn't pick up until the other Senshi are introduced.

Love in Sailor Moon always has been hanging around the branch of romance people run up to with eager eyes. Teenage girls pass through days in a city dressed in the blessings of the pink and rosy, ribbon tied by hands who wish to hold those of the people they love--few fulfilled, most in yearning. The sailor soldiers of love and justice were only agents of romance and world peace through local service to me, as nothing else could overcome the sheer attachment of the series to the same subject. It was a pleasant surprise that through the final confrontation, Sailor Moon's love unlocked a more universal concept for itself to cleanly use the slice-of-life elements and the lack of heroic super abilities on a grandio…

Sailor Moon is arguably one of the most significant magical girl series of all time, which is due to a combination of factors that contribute to the series' success beyond nostalgia. While nostalgia for the series may occasionally play a part in recognizing why the series is as loved today as ever, I believe there are several key elements in addition to this that help uphold everything the series stands for, and it excellently blends themes, plot, and tension in a way that is quite difficult to successfully replicate or create. Sailor Moon has more than strong elements; rather, Sailor Moon excels at blending all its elements cohesively in a very rewarding way, which makes characters very lifelike and memorable.
Sailor Moon's most significant element to its success would appear to be its c…

I'll admit, I kind of wrote off Sailor Moon as something that just wasn't for me, a 90s anime that I could just leave in the rear view mirror, but it appears I was missing out.
This was sincerely a lot more fun than I expected, especially given how much filler there was in this series. Sure, most of that filler isn't particular interesting and it is very obvious that the series is just spinning its wheels for a while, buts ome of my favorite moments were pure filler, with episode 31 being one of the stand-out best of the series I'd put alongside or even above many of its canon episodes. This was just a joy to watch, and while the penultimate pair of episodes certainly felt rushed, I can't say it bothered me too much. There's a lot to love about a series like this that can be incredibly si…

Sailor Moon stands as an iconic anime that has left an enduring impression on fans and the anime industry at large. Its straightforward and easily comprehensible storyline serves as a strong foundation, making it accessible and enjoyable for audiences of all ages. The narrative, centered around the adventures of the Sailor Guardians, is uncomplicated yet charming, resonating particularly well with fans of the magical girl and 90s anime genres.
One of the standout features of the anime is its beautiful art and design style. The visuals are characterized by a vibrant and varied color palette, creating a lively and cheerful atmosphere. The character designs, coupled with the magical transformation sequences, contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal. The animation captures the essence of th…

Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, simplified as Sailor Moon, is a series that is known for popularizing the Magical Girl genre of manga and anime. It is considered to be the best Magical Girl franchise of all time. Even if girls and young women are the intended target audience, I think Sailor Moon can be enjoyed by anybody.
Sailor Moon is all about a young girl named Usagi Tsukino, who is chosen to be the titular legendary sailor soldier by a talking black cat named Luna. Her mission is to find her allies and protect the world from the forces of the Dark Kingdom. In order to do so, they must find and obtain the Legendary Silver Crystal before their enemies do. The Dark Kingdom seeks the Silver Crystal in order to resurrect their great ruler. However, as the search for it proves to be difficult,…

7.5/10 (This review is for the entire series: S1-S5 + Movies)
+A technical masterpiece: Stylized cel animation, romantic OST, and pretty character designs
+Rich characters; great initial setup and overall concept
-Disorganized story structure leaves room for more
-Lacks compelling character arcs and stronger story beats
Inspired by the classic manga from 1991, Sailor Moon remains influential to the genre for a reason. With unique character designs, stylized animation, and memorable music, it’s not hard to see why so many series took inspiration from it. What really makes the series shine is our titular MC, whose charisma and natural flaws make her so lovable and believable. The tight writing and fun characters in season one truly creates a memorable viewing experience.
What truly pre…

So I've finally managed to watch Sailor Moon. I think it's essential to watch at least one of the first three seasons by any serious anime viewer. I watched it for several reasons, but mainly because I wanted to understand the phenomenon, girls were crazy about it in the 90s, and it changed its own genre. It was also franchised by many companies for toys, cosmetics and god knows what else. To my knowledge, it was Disney who first started this soft enterprise between fictional narratives and commerce. This kind of stuff gets my attention from a purely analytical and social perspective.
But don't get me wrong, it's fun. Especially viewed at this point of time; to see projects that encourage girls to be strong and beautiful within their natural gender roles. Unlike in the West, Japanese peop…

Sailor Moon (1992-1997)
I decided to take a look at this classic, given how iconic it is, being one of the benchmarks in the world, and what can I say?
Sailor Moon adds the tropes of your typical shoujo series, with a somewhat silly, smiling, lovesick protagonist, good with everyone because yes but despite, with the passing of the episodes you grow fond of her, like her friends Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna and Hotaru
Sailor Moon is a phenomenon among Mahou-Shoujo and popular culture in general, having a wide cast of characters with rich personalities and making reference to some social issues, having representation of minorities such as the LGBTQ+ community.
Something that remains for this program is that it simmers, since it was broadcast almost simultaneously with…

Last month, I rewatched Evangelion for the first time in over 15 years and wrote a new review. Now, I'm writing a new review of Sailor Moon. Specifically season 1. The first time I watched this, I was 11 years old and knew absolutely nothing about Japanese anime, visual directing, animation, etc. At first, I just dismissed it as "that girl show that came on before DBZ". I eventually found myself enjoying it, but I didn't like the 2nd season, Sailor Moon R, and stopped watching. Flash forward to 2021 and my girlfriend convinced me to watch seasons 2-5. I really enjoyed them as an older anime viewer who has gained an appreciation for the medium and the amount of work that goes into it. Over the last month, I finally decided to re-watch season 1 and I'm happy to say it holds up really well!…

Over two decades later and I've finally watched Sailor Moon. I remember when this was on Toonami when I was a kid but it just never drew me in. It definitely has that Iconic factor going for it, I mean, who doesn't know Sailor Moon? It's because of it's legend status in history I decided to give it a shot. I'm not sure if the Pretty Guardians were the first magical girls on screen but they were clearly the first to do it right. To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of the magical girl genre, unless it's like a dark themed magical girl series, such as Puella Magica, Magical Girl Raising Project, or Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka (I loved all of these). Regardless, I've slowly began to see the merit in what Hikari Tsutsui, from 3d Kanajo/Real Girl, sees in the magical girl series he watche…

Ah, Sailor Moon. The show that got me into magical girls and into anime in general. I first watched it when I was 15 and recently rewatched it.
Story - Its the first season of Sailor Moon so its a good start. The story revolves around Usagi Tsukino and four other girls - Ami Mizuno, Rei Hino, Makoto Kino, and Minako Aino - as they become Sailor Guardians and fight monsters to protect the Earth. They also have to search for the Moon Princess. Its a decent story. My one complaint is how they made it so obvious that the Moon Princess was Usagi. They have the same hairstyle and same voice, and no one put two and two together. So I give the story a 7/10
Art - The art was so beautiful. This is honestly one of the most aesthetically pleasing anime I'…

I'll just be speaking for the whole series with this review, not just the first season.
Honestly, I just love this series so much, I love the art, the fashion, the story, and the classic, classic nostalgia. It is just amazing, and I know regarding technicality there is probably many faults to it, but for a show with the age demographic of like 7-12, it does not do a bad job at all, and it's just perfect, but it's definitely something that's hard to enjoy if you don't care for nostalgia, then you would get bored at an older age...
Anyways it's a classic, it's hard to judge classics on technicalities, 10/10 moving on...
