Colorful: The Motion Picture

Introduction

Upon arriving at the train station of death, an impure soul is granted a second chance at life against his will. Reincarnating into the body of Makoto Kobayashi, a 14-year-old boy who recently committed suicide, the soul is tasked to identify the boy's greatest sin in life within a time limit of six months. Although it remains reluctant toward continuing life as Makoto, the soul soon begins to notice the complexities of people's emotions and actions. Deconstructing the ideas of fractured families and suicide, Colorful explores the intricacies of the daily struggles humans face but are too abashed to confront. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

For whose who say that is boring I have only to say one thing: if you don't accept small things of life you cannot like this movie. This movie is a little diamond, he tells us to be less rude with ourselves, he wanted to say us "look your life with stranger's eyes and you'll see something diffrent, that can be even better than you thouth". It touches your sul whitout showing you "strong imagines" it touches you with his semplicity and his crude reality; depression distorces all you see and you feel but all of us can see the real "colorful" and enjoy life even if it has a lot bad colors. I hope all of you are still alive.

My brother has committed suicide, so this is a personal topic. From that perspective I do applaud all works that tries to discuss this. I also recently visited Japan for the first time, and I must say this movie didn't really make sense until I did and saw the country and its people with my own eyes. The social norms and the general culture of Japan are very different than in comparable countries in the West. So this movie isn't by any means a general movie about suicide, rather it's directed towards a highly specific culture. From that perspective I am not really capable of telling how well this movie functions as a suicide prevention measure, but I am not so sure it would work well for someone suicidal in the West. There are however a lot of things I do like with the movie, I like the…

Colorful is a movie about a deceased soul who gets a second chance at life, his soul is placed into a fourteen year old boy who recently attempted suicide. I’ll start by praising the dark themes this movie shows and delves into throughout. The way it shows depression or bullying feels pretty organic, though the way they did it was nothing shattering or groundbreaking, but the message was still there nonetheless. By the end, you really see Makoto valuing his life much more. I also think the backgrounds in this movie looked solid. The art direction in general was great, the way they blended this almost photo realism with dull colors to represent the main character’s emotions was done really well. The themes in this movie as well as the production value was what stood out to me. Unfortunat…

"Instead of repairing the hole in a drowning boat, just avoid it, be ignorant about it. Then you will be fine"- this is the message this anime movie conveys. The movie perfectly conveyed this message of the author. But what I'm going to discuss is the message itself that the author/movie has given to us Makoto has committed suicide and is dead. Makoto's life ->> ~Bullied at school from 1st year ~No friend to speak of ~his dad is burned out from over-work, doesn't have a strong bond with his son. ~Same relation with his bro(he is busy with study) ~The one makoto had a bond with, grandmother, recently pass away. ~He has a crush (typical). One day, while following his crush, he sees her going into a love hotel with a middle aged man. If that wasn't enough the next moment he witness his m…

“Colorful” is what happens when an interesting idea is unlucky enough to be given to a writer with no idea what nuance or subtlety are. I’m usually a person that focuses on the story and plot of a movie or show. I often don’t notice the problems with animation or voice acting that other people do. So when I noticed the lackluster animation and stiff and unnatural voice acting in this all I can do is really pity people who notice such things. If it annoyed me, it must be torture for them. Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about “plot” and “story”. Many people use these terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page… PLOT is the surface-level events. What, when, where, how and why (externally) things are h…

This is one of a kind of story which didn't just throw everything upon you at once , you need time to understand the message that is given by the main character The plot of this something that is better than 80% of the newest anime movie I have seen. The art style is pretty old but if that is the reason for you to skip then you are missing out something really good This show the realistic side of the anime movie, not any fantasy but pure reality The story is super unique and it's just too good I can't never forget this anime movie again, if you are still wondering if it's worth it or not , just go and watch it you will find out yourself

One of the most dislikeable main characters I've ever seen. Sadistic, selfish, morally bankrupt and zero empathy. Hard to give specific examples without spoilers, but, you would think he would be a bit more empathetic to the people around him knowing the boy's body he inhabits attempted suicide, but he still treats everyone around him like garbage. He ignores his family, and he torments his mother relentlessly without her even knowing the reason why (until late into the movie). To top it off he randomly attempts to sexually assault a girl (who forgives him because he says sorry, LOL). Yet, we're supposed to root for this guy? Overall I kept watching until the end, and it was predictable, but not terrible. I don't agree with the reviews saying it was boring. Just beyond belief and frustrat…

I watched this the year it came out. I was in highschool at this time, went through some tough times during those period. This film healed something within me. It's kinds of like a self-help modern fantasy set-up that's predominantly touching something realistic at the same time adding the imagination of how fantasy can help you in times of difficulty. Art style is more on the semi-realistic side, i must say when it's bright, it's bright-bright. The family that was centered here had some character growth and realizations here and there. Bittersweet and had that hanging or lasting feeling right after watching it. Recommended to watch. Did re-watch it probably 2 more times in a span of years after that. Pretty good.

I do not consider myself an authority or knowledgeable enough to comment on psychological issues, especially those pertaining to self-harm and/or suicide, (although watching isekai should count as a form of self harm). Furthermore, I don't think a story is worth more when it tries to tackle these issues. If anything, I view shows and movies purely as a form of entertainment. If there is no substance in the story and it's just preaching, I would consider it bad. For example, I don't think Grave of the Fireflies is a good movie just because it portrays war, but because it's effective as a movie in general. The portrayal is realistic, the characters act realistically, there is a story, a struggle, drama, conflict, etc. With that out of the way, I do think Colorful is a decent movie. Not beca…

This anime was a great discovery, a true hidden gem that I'm happy I was able to find. Colorful deals with very important themes such as depression, suicide or self-discovery through a brilliant narrative and with an incredible hardness but at the same time sweetness. A film that is divided into two parts: the first hour and the second hour. The first hour is among the saddest things I've ever seen where, due to the protagonist's constant mistakes, we are faced with heartbreaking situations. But in the second part, the protagonist, Makoto, undergoes a profound change and thanks to the help of his first friend, he manages to repair the negative situations that he himself had created. The plot has a very interesting premise and I loved this sort of two-part film that I explained in the pre…

i love the premise. i was suprised by the plot twist at the end. i think the most memorable scene was between makoto his crush at the end. colorful focuses on too many characters, it ends up feeling flat as if we've only scratched the surface of who these people are. it kind of is a juxtaposition on one hand you want to tell that humans are very complex, they're colorful. with vibrant and dirty colors. and on the other you give every character a total screentime of 25 minutes. purapura, the brother and the dad could have been taken out of the film and you wouldn't have noticed the difference.

Colorful has a very clear and straightforward message that it presents, which is that life is worth living. Though it doesn't have much to offer in terms of story complexity, it still provides value through its messaging. Colorful is quite boring and slow in many of its parts, though the slow, uneventful way of presenting the story does aid its ability to really convey its core message. The movie can also be hard to watch because of how frustrating the protagonist's actions are. The plot twist near the end was also very predictable. Overall, Colorful is worth a shot, but there is no telling whether a given person will like it.

Colorful is a profound and emotionally charged drama that tells a compelling story about redemption, self-discovery, and the complexities of human nature. A masterpiece. This movie had such a profound impact on me that I'm struggling to put it into words. From the very first scene, I was hooked. The story was so cleverly crafted with a mix of themes that were both optimistic and pessimistic, yet had an overall serene overtone that made it all the more captivating. The film explores the theme of sin and redemption in a nuanced and thought-provoking way, and it forced me to confront my own moral and ethical beliefs. As I watched Makoto navigate his new life, I couldn't help but feel invested in his journey filled with challenges and experiences all unique to him while struggling to search…

“It’s good, to have a tomorrow.” Man that line is raw as hell. This movie is very simple. There’s not all that much beyond its message, and the message is a simple one. Life is worth living. Don’t give up. The movie conveys this message really well, and it packs a pretty good emotional punch. It’s not amazing or anything, but it’s a solid watch. I liked it. The animation is simple to accommodate this, but simple does not mean bad. It conveys the emotions of the characters to perfect effect, and honestly manages to look really beautiful in some moments. The entire movie manage to bring so much emotion to the table with what seems like very little to work with. While the majority of the runtime is spent on simple daily life things and character drama, by the end it slowly dawns on you tha…

Colorful is a wonderful movie, must-watch anime Colorful abords importance of life and life's little pleasures, from the view of a lonely stray boy. Makoto, the protagonist, must learn to appreciate life despite the sadness who surround him, he may reembrace the life for 6 months. Despite the simple plot, the movie stages this very well. The movie is meaningful and touching, I love the way the protagonist faces all the obstacles, I also love the secondary characters, they're realistic and represents to each one a way of seeing things. To conclude, you should watch this touching movie, the only negative point I found is that the movie is badly paced, despite that, It's a beautiful movie whoch can you learn a lot of life lesson (NB : Shouko Sano does not deserve anything that happened…

forgive me if it's rude, but this is a Japanese Hallmark movie lmfaooooo except with childhood depression. There are many societal and internal issues at play between the characters in the film and there's just not enough oomph in the writing to focus on the relationships our protagonist could be making. The whole theme of the movie is; hang onto life, we have friendship, nice shoes and a steam bun. But, the "processing" part of this movie is done with an oddly childish authority figure... angel.....? Why open a story touching on such deeply emotional issues? Could you have written this story differently (yes) to focus on *why* conservative values have eroded? (Yes) or maybe write a character who learns why his ways are wrong because he.. idk, talked to any of his friends?? (Yes they cou…

This is a masterpiece and only due to some technicalities my overall score comes up to a 9.4 but trust me the story and characters will hit you...hard. The story begins in the most unique way. I just loved the opening. Then we got to know the rest of the characters. Every character in this movie is multi-faceted and complex to the core. Now lets get into the meat of this:: The cheating mother. I don't know what to say about it, tbh I think Makoto treated her in the right way but there wasn't any information from her side. His father definitely knows about it but decided not to act on it because of the suicide attempt( fishing lunch scene? I guess). This makes the father a much more greater human being than probably me because eventhough they explained it to me her reasons for doing it I st…

Colorful is exploring a very delicate theme, different sides of a person. It tells us that every person has the good and the bad side, the bright and the dark side. It’s one of a hell difficult themes to illustrate in a film. Sadly in my opinion, but Colorful fails to bring this intriguing theme to completion. To my mind the theme’s problem begins with the characters, as Colorful completely fails to go in depth of the their problems in a proper way. The characterisations are ruined as the film tends to jump from character to character. Take the protagonist’s crush for example. At the very beginning she got some screen time and development. We got to know ‘how’ and ‘what’ but then suddenly this film completely forgets of her existence. Another good example is the mother-son arc (the best p…

*SPOILERS* I was left with a disappointed after completing this anime. The cover art for this anime, introduction and the name gave me too high expectations. I was expecting it to be more philosophical rather than the message be "humans are multicoloured, with different sides to them". The main character is unlikeable for me and I feel like he has little depth, it's a shame that the audience did not get to learn more about him and didn't get to form a connection to him. All we know is that before, he was a stereotypical outcast art kid and was depicted as a loner. By the end of the film he attains a friend, gets closer to his crush and is more outgoing. To me there was not enough character development for me to feel happy for the main character. I also wish that we could've gone back to t…

Colorful Story - 10 Art - 10 Sound - 6 Character - 10 Enjoyment - 10 Overall - 10 Colorful is a wonderful movie about second chances and forgiveness. The movie's direction is done very tastefully, despite all the mature and dangerous topics this movie tackles. I'll be honest, this movie starts quite slow. It builds up its premise with character interactions and the slow looming threat of an angel bullying its main character to do something, anything. But with that said, it pays off later when emotions get high. The melodrama is quite rewarding. It's a drama that heals you. It's strange really, but the drama isn't there to make characters feel stuff, it's there for conflicts to be resolved. And, I believe most movies don't do that. Colorful hits those sweet spots of redemption; everyone's…
