Wolf Children

Wolf Children

Introduction

Hana, a hard-working college student, falls in love with a mysterious man who attends one of her classes though he is not an actual student. As it turns out, he is not truly human either. On a full moon night, he transforms, revealing that he is the last werewolf alive. Despite this, Hana's love remains strong, and the two ultimately decide to start a family. Hana gives birth to two healthy children—Ame, born during rainfall, and Yuki, born during snowfall—both possessing the ability to turn into wolves, a trait inherited from their father. All too soon, however, the sudden death of her lover devastates Hana's life, leaving her to raise a peculiar family completely on her own. The stress of raising her wild-natured children in a densely populated city, all while keeping their identity a secret, culminates in a decision to move to the countryside, where she hopes Ame and Yuki can live a life free from the judgments of society. Wolf Children is the heartwarming story about the challenges of being a single mother in an unforgiving modern world. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I'm happy to write that I found "Wolf Children" to be a very interesting and touching movie and I highly recommend it to anyone. I strongly believe any movie enjoyer is capable of appreciating this work of art. "Wolf Children" builds a tense yet heart-warming and inspiring narrative around a solo-parenting mother and her two very different kids, Yuki and Ame, who are wolves. It's interesting and very imersive to follow along their difficulties, tragedies and victories such as financial problems, jobs, finding time for things and even deeper topics like grief, emotional exhaustion, the struggles of fitting in (or not belonging anywhere) and learning to let go of things. That is why I believe this movie carries its main key with the emotional weight and those are my kind of movies. Instead…

Wolf Children is a good movie, no doubt about it. Among Hosoda's films, I'd put it at the top alongside The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. What the movie does best is weaving the supernatural into everyday life. Instead of asking how cool it would be to be half-wolf, it asks practical questions like, "How do you take your werewolf kid to get vaccinated?". It's something widely present in Hosoda's movies (like turning back time to get first dibs on pudding) but that I have always appreciated. Hana and her two cubs carry the film. Yuki gets more attention than Ame, but their opposite journeys make for an interesting contrast. My only real complaint is the pacing. The first half takes its time, while the second rushes through years of character development. A more balanced structure would h…

Wow. Just wow. For a movie that isn't Studio Ghibli this really hit like one. Wolf Children is arguably the most accurate depiction of single parenting. Two children are born between two worlds, and a single mother is left to raise them on her own. This 2-hour film tackles the reality of parenting in such a profound way. It showcases mothers for who they truly are: physically capable, extremely resilient, and highly dependable. At a young age, Hana's father taught her to always smile, even through difficult times. He believed that smiling will help her overcome anything. And that's exactly what Hana did. In addition to themes of parenting and child-rearing, the film also teaches us the importance of choosing our own path. A mother's love for her children is unbelievably strong. And this mo…

I watched this with my mother years ago, and of course expected her to cry. It's a moving movie, and my mom has a very low barrier for tears. What I didn't expect at 15 was the way that she looked at me after we watched the film. The soft lullabies of the music, the natural soundscape, and the textures of the setting all echo a childlike wonder for the world that Hana encourages us to explore. This movie whirls you through the ephemeral memory of growth through youth, and enforces an ever-present maternal love that I aspire to be able to provide.

Personal stats: as of Oct 2025, I have completed 196 anime with a mean score of 7.33. Wolf Children score: 7/10. Wolf Children was a good watch - heartwarming, a little sad, even suspenseful at times. As a whole, it tells an amazing story with a great premise, a logical ending and lovable characters. By the time it’s over, it leaves you with a strong, unforgettable bond between yourself and the film. If I look at the movie in pieces though,it is different: the setup - which is about the parents and their relationship - is by far the most beautiful part for me. The couple is adorable, their interactions are amazing, and the atmosphere is very aesthetic. The middle section, which focuses more on raising the children, kept me invested mostly because of the mother figure, who completely sto…

Backflips, backflips, backflips all day, show so good I did a Backflip again (as usual I was rushed to the hospital again). Enough said, quick, to the review Jumping right into it, the animation, what can I say shii was perfect, I loved it, it was great, the scenes, the characters even the background characters looked amazing, tell me I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the background characters were rotoscoped,it was very pleasing on my to my eyes, I mean VERRRYYYY pleasing, I had an eyegasm even that's how good the animation was. Gone are the days my eyes have to subject themselves to static people in the background stuck in a time stop spell of some sort. Animation's a ten and I will die on this hill with thousands of others The story had me, a grown ass man holding back tears at some poin…

My my. What a lovely film this is. This is week 3 of my friend and I recommending 1 film to watch each week and this is the best so far (I'm not mad this was his recommendation at all........I'm. not I swear........nob...)Anyway. This film was a real treat and here is why I think so. I start with the animation. Character designs are as simple as they are perfect. There is no over complicated character work or over the top cliches, just excellent character design. Another great element to this lovely piece of work is the perspective the animation captures in both characters and landscapes. Here we have a studio that perfectly understood what this story needed animation wise. End to end its an excellent display of talent and understanding of what is required. 9/10. The story, albeit unconv…

A movie that tells the story of a powerful mother trying to raise her 2 kids alone, which are half human half werewolf, and the numerous (hard) decisions that she needs to make to fullfill her wish of raising them both the best she can, as she doesn't know much about half werewolf kids and their needs. This anime was quite a bag of emotions, from really tragic ones, to really happy, to really peaceful. Truly showing the adventure of the mother and her journey to raise her kids alone, and the kids journey to find their own paths in life and have the ability to choose exactly what they want, which the mother really tries to give that to them, while also experiencing the unknown of motherhood alone (for a very well explained reason). The love of the mother is felt troughout this whole movie,…

Sappy story, with extra bestiality. This film is a reminder that some ideas or projects are just doomed because how bad they are. Story follows some average girl who starts sleeping with super cool and edgy guy, who turns out to be an reverse werewolf. Wolfmanwere? There are few bits, enjoyable moments, like that one where ex-student, now bestiality enjoyer mother moves out into sticks and lives a "simpler, closer to nature" life, with her bastard mutant children. But that's it. Except one deus ex scene, to trigger mentioned above change of scenery, film is predictable and boring. Story is simple, and boy oh boy, does someone had hots to put some doggy x student girl action, am I right? I am. Also finale build up is so obvious and poorly delivered, I had to pause for a moment to rethin…

"Wolf Children" is a truly enchanting film that swept me away with its heartfelt story and stunning animation. From the very beginning, I was drawn into the world of Hana and her children, who possess a unique ability inherited from their father. What struck me most about this film is its ability to convey a deep sense of emotion. The tender moments of family bonding and the challenges they face are portrayed with such sincerity that I couldn't help but feel a connection to the characters. The animation is absolutely breathtaking, with lush landscapes and fluid character movements that transport you into the heart of the story. It's clear that a lot of care and attention went into every detail, making for a visually stunning experience. But what really sets "Wolf Children" apart is its…

Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki translates to "Wolf Children Ame and Yuki" animated film directed by Hosoda Mamoru of Studio Chizu. I'll just start literally by saying "Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki" is amazing 10/10 and must be watched by all. The girl fall in love with werewolf (loving him and having his kids) the focus of this story is not the relationship between the couple, but between the mother and her children. Although this makes for an interesting approach to the overused concept of the relationship between humans and their wolf relatives. It’s an experience that on end can bring a person to complete ruin to giving someone a very reason to exist on the other. It’s ironic how being a parent is one of the greatest challenges and hardships that a person can experience but yet nearly eve…

Wolf Children is the only Hosoda film which never once loses itself in its wondrous fantasy elements; I do love the glorious self-indulgence of something like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but ultimately I think that Hosoda has a tendency to distract from his endlessly endearing characters and touching central narratives with whatever dazzling fictional realm he’s conjured up—the best example of which is probably Summer Wars, which I think loses a lot of its unique family dramedy charm as a result of the mind-numbingly boring video game battles. Wolf Children however is the biggest exception to this rule. Here you’ll find Hosoda at his most restrained: its low fantasy elements are used sparingly if not at all, and only exist to lightly emphasise the coming of age themes and ideas abou…

Wolf Children is a really struggling movie to get through, but in the end it was very much worth it. It is about this lady who has to bring wolf children on her own. And let me just say it is depressing as all hell. She raises and struggles to raise them alone, in the countryside. It was nice seeing the support she received though. I do not have kids, but man this felt terrible to see. The ending though was freaking amazing and I kind of want a whole spin off of this haha. The animation quality is really really good as expected for a movie. Sountrack is amazing! All in all nice movie! 4/5! Thanks! -CyanCheetah

After falling in love with the last known descendant of a mythical, near-extinct werewolf lineage, the college-aged Hana embarks on an intimate journey into motherhood that would appear nothing less than a whimsical fairy tale to entertain both young children and elderly couples. The narrative of this strange family drama is utterly remarkable, yet remains so innocent and unassuming in its writing and storytelling. Simultaneously intertwining three life experiences through masterful storyboarding, Wolf Children inspires in a manner that is extraordinary in cinema. How ironic that this animated work began so humbly from such a simple premise. To say the least, Wolf Children never begins so intensely, to the extent that the werewolf father’s early or fateful death could be remarked as predic…

"He told me to keep smiling through tough or painful times, even if I had to force myself to do it." Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children beautifully captures the struggles and hardships that a parent goes through. The film portrays the events of Hana's life, as she goes through various trials and tribulations in raising her children, in a brilliant yet heartbreaking way. The movie's full of vibrant imagery, stunning cinematography and masterful storytelling. The soundtrack is endearing, serene and soothing.  A coming of age story, that shows the nature of societal pressure. Having to break the boundaries, and be who you want to be, is none other than an achievement.  A mother's love knows no bounds, and that is evident throughout the movie. Rewatching this with my mum was a treat. Grown up, o…

I shed a month's worth of tears watching "Wolf Children". It's the first time I've seen a movie that made me cry all the time. The sound of the rain, the flowers on the roadside... the scenery I saw, and every single thing I saw were filled with the irreplaceable "life" in the mundane everyday life. All of them make me happy. I can notice the important things but I forget because wrapped in happy emotions. Ah, I have lost my vocabulary... I recommend it to everyone, and this movie give us the feeling 'I can change little by little'. Definitely worth watching! I recommend it to everyone.

There's something quaint, realistic and heart touching about this simple story about unsimple things. The unassuming yet inspiring story of dedicated motherhood, of beautiful souls and their trials, of happy endurance. This story isn't about tragedy, although it has it. It isn't about gaining sympathy, though it earns it. It isn't about sadness. Its about life, even in the face of adversity, of growing up and loving selflessly, in a way only a mother could. The art is is simple in design, yet the artists always retain a warm touch of loving beauty and detail in their drawing everywhere, whether it be doorways, details in the scene, the way the light or rain drops fall, or in the very movement of the characters. The animation is natural and fluid throughout, just mesmerizing you effortles…

"Attention, this review is composed exclusively of love and passion, we advise the bitter cynic and breakers of atmosphere of any sex and origin to leave the place while it is still time." We are facing a complicated case because I have to say that The Wolf Children is a great movie in many aspects and categories but especially in what it has traumatized me so much that it ended up in number 1 of my top 10 movies; and that after about twenty viewings having engraved the movie in my DNA I still find myself crying at the end as if I had discovered it, taking into account that I am Autistic Asperger and therefore that my reactions and emotions are constantly amplified and "different from the norm" to say official terms, yeah it's not going to be easy but I'm giving myself the challenge becau…

"I still haven't been able to do anything for you!" -Hana Wolf children is a powerful and polished story with a lot of themes grounded in reality. Focusing on the relationship and love between parent and child, one's inner self and occasionally, the regret of not making the most of something. There's almost this formula for tension resolution and breaks, emulating somewhat of Problem solution cycle without it feeling repetitive. Perfect example of what they mean by show dont tell Some shots are out of place but most of them are breathtaking Animation is not the pinnacle but it is breathtaking where it needs to be and is still quite beautiful, with character and environment movements being smooth and fluid. The sound suits the no dialogue sequences Weather and atmosphere are used to a clev…

When i finished it and going to give a rating,i was really looking for an option like outstandingly bad, which could have been a really heartwarming wholesome movie, turned into just a simply putting bad. It shows how ungrateful your children can be,it shows how amazingly stupid you can be when you are in love and why it is so needed to control your urge in moments Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong to fall in love within a second and make a mistake but in every decision that's just sad But it made me think about the fact how quickly people forget about some people who work their asses off by the first chance they get and the last 10-15 mins of this movie will somehow make you scream in frustration and maybe even make you break something I see many people rating it quite high and s…
