Despite having the power to turn back time, the actual lesson Makoto learns is that time marches ever forwards, and rather than turn back the clocks to get everything perfect, we should work in the here-and-now for a better tomorrow. Her desperate effort to hold on to the present in spite of the inevitably of the future is the crux of the film, learning what actually matters in the grand scheme of her life and accepting the inevitably of change, and this movie NAILS that lesson.
I do appreciate that the majority of what she goes back in time for are the most petty things possible, and literally rewinds time just to avoid an awkward conversation - are some of her choices as selfish as they are dumb? Yes. Could any of us claim to do much better at that age? I DARE you. She is definitely a f…

Just finished this movie. It was better than I thought it would be! The main character Makoto is brash and immature, but she's a high school student that's written like a high school student. She's a little bit frustrating as a character due to her immaturity and slight selfishness, but still very likeable and endearing. When someone like Makoto suddenly gains the power to go back in time, of course she uses it for silly and selfish things. Like many other time travel stories, eventually there are consequences for her flippant use of time travel. The time travel power serves the story well and I'm glad they didn't delve too deeply into the mechanics of time travel. That's a difficult pitfall to navigate when telling a story. Instead we get a pretty simple time travel premise that acts as a…

This anime movie i really liked, the anime movie "The girl who leapt through time" was amazing i cant lie,i started to watch this and i finished it recently because i liked the name and i wanted to give it a try.
The animation, was a bit mid i cant lie,but even with this animation i still liked it.
The story i cant talk about it too much but it was nice because the girl gained the ability to jump through time and its a great superpower to have, and than she tried to help others using her ability, and the only reason i liked this anime movie so much was because i like animes with time travel too much.
So overall, this anime has a score of perfect 10/10 from me since its just a movie and it has time travel in it and i def recommend it to any new anime watchers.

I think the only hangup I have with the story in this movie is that the guy whom Makoto switched places with in the Tempura thing is just left out of the time travel spiel. Like Makoto's final travel is to her falling over in the classroom on the first day, theoretically, this random guy is still subject to bullying by accident because of her, and Chiaki isn't there to help him out since he leaves at the end of the day. Poor guy. Aside from that, this is an exceptional movie, man.
Makoto really feels like an ordinary person given time travel, she uses it to fix innocuous stuff or to redo conversations she has, and she does not see the consequences until it is nearly too late. The fact that she can only move backwards in time and never go to the future beyond what she has lived through is…

6/10 ~ Really not deserving of the hype
This one has been on my watch list for what seems like forever, constantly on the top of most peoples lists and charts, standing the test of time. 2025 seems to be the year I am tackling all the old ones, as this one is now 19 years old, sheeeesh. Im going to start with that this one really isnt for me as I have a general distaste for:
- High school, especially Japanese school setting
- sports ball, especially baseball
- extremely dumb immature love from teens/preteens as I kinda skipped that phase of life and just went into the deep end, so I cannot relate
And this movie is almost exclusively just these things I do not like, so it has to be really good for me to get past these 3 things.
If I had to quickly describe this movie it would be as such:…

I have mixed feelings with this movie because there were times where I felt like I was getting excited about the things that were happening in the plot twist that the movie has, but I feel like there was something that kept me from getting 100% excited.
I clearly got angry on several occasions with the main character wanting to turn back time on silly things, I mean I get it but why on that thing? In the end I like that she used one of her time leaping moments for something good. I like that the movie slowly explains to you until you understand that a time leap can negatively or positively affect someone.

I am honestly at a loss as to why this won so many awards and has such a high rating. This had a promising premise, but didn't match up at all to my expectations based on the ratings/reviews. My 16yo watched this with me and disliked it even more than I did, for the same reasons.
It started out well, with a feel similar to other good anime movies as far as the story buildup, the art, pacing, character introduction etc. But as soon as Makoto learned how to leap back in time at will, it started going downhill fast.
First and mainly, Makoto was just annoying throughout. I have watched lots of anime starring teens (which most anime, including my favorite one, does) and she is definitely the least mature protagonist for her age that I've seen. She was shallow, selfish, completely impulsive an…

A lot is implied and yet incoherent but the character work is impeccable. The showcase of what a teenager would do with the power of time travel and how they would deal with the ramifications from said time travel is a frustrating, interesting, sad and yet beautiful thing to witness. As the runtime increases you'll experience the main character mature & grow by watching her priorities and focus change as her use of time travel & its ramifications evolve.
To be a teenager and deal with & know so much and yet be the only one aware would be maddening and while the movie displays the aforementioned well, it also lacks care for affected characters outside of the main cast. Regarding time travel it starts off simple and a tool for the majority of the movie but when it starts to expand & explain…

I finished the movie “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” yesterday and didn’t think about leaving a review since it felt kinda blank to me at first. But then I couldn’t stop thinking about it, even while rewatching OHSHC.
The plot felt a bit plain-ish, and I’d say there were several holes in the narrative, which was unfortunate. Yet, the message behind the scenes stayed with me. That’s why yesterday night, I was reflecting on time (obviously), the thing of value, and the fleeting nature of first friendships, relationships, and eventual heartbreaks.
Time waits for no one, truly. Sometimes, it feels like a gift because all you want is for these long minutes to pass. Other times, it feels like a curse when all you desire is one more second with your loved ones, when you long to save someone,…

After first Coming Across this Movie some years ago it never really struck a chord with me until I rewatched it
''The Girl who Leapt Through Time'' is an anime I still enjoy because of its simple message.
Truly time waits for no one, and Life moves on you must never take for granted what you have because you will never truly appreciate it until its gone. On my rewatch I noticed little details that I had missed earlier. I also wandered how my perception to the movie would have changed. Three Years may not seem like a long time, but I have changed a lot since then. Mamoru Hosoda continues to excel with his organic and charming Story telling.
Conclusion: I just wanted to gush about how much I like this movie especially as time has passed.
Time really waits for no one.

No matter what, the background music makes it unbearable to watch. Even if it was the greatest anime of all time I couldn't watch it because of the background music. Besides the music, its characters' drawing is very basic and awful. They don't even have shadows on them. No art whatsoever. The story had a great potential but they ruined it.
It is filled with tons of uninteresting regular daily life of the characters and most of the time nothing happens.
There are lots of slow paced anime that are really interesting. But this one is not one of them, there is not much to like. The art style is so basic that it looks like a toddler has drawn it, and the animation and the characters' movements are very unrealistic.
I have no idea why its rating is so high!

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (or, "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" for the English-speakers) is one of Mamoru Hosoda's most recognized works, and not for nothing, either. Despite the issues the film has (and I'm going to be as blunt about it as I need to), the strengths it possesses are almost enough to disregard all of that. Almost.
The first issue that I can bring to attention is the animation. In a lot of shots characters and surfaces lack detail. This wouldn't be an issue if it was a matter of backgrounds (not everyone is Mappa, and thank God for it), but it's especially jarring when a single scene has the main character, Makoto, turning slowly in reaction to something and her shirt goes from a blank surface to a minimally-detailed texture in slow motion. I This applies to expressions that…

I had quite a few expectations when I decided to watch this movie. But I was not satisfied with how it turned out to be.
The animation was okay and the soundtrack was decent. But the character design lacks taste. Neither the protagonist nor the other characters leave a lasting impression.
Coming to the story, you would expect something interesting every time there's a time leap in a movie. But almost all the time leaps in this story were pretty uneventful except three times. This movie definitely failed in the aspect of "time travel". Now, the romance aspect isn't very redeeming either. I didn't realize that this was tagged as a romance movies until I came to MAL to mark it as completed. The romance in this anime is just the protagonist regretting what she did for a brief while.

[STORY] (9/10)
I feel like The girl who leapt through time isn't exactly a "story anime", although it shares its iconical traits. Good animation, highschool setting, lots of sunsets, identity troubles, romance... It's almost too standard, in some sense. But here's where lies a notch of originality. Time travel, which isn't exactly original per se, gets thrown in the mix and revolts the plot from the ground up. All of a sudden everything either goes extremly smoothly or tremendously wrong: for a short while Makoto is able to dodge even death, but it isn't long before the thread tangles up. Micro-stories begin but never finish, or they finish so many times it's like they never began, destinies are swapped and put back in their places so rapidly nobody can tell which end is the head and which…

"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" is an average science fiction coming-of-age story by Mr. Mamoru Hosada which could have been better if it had been a bit less complicated and the character of Chiaki had received more development. The plot is down to Earth, engaging and repetitive after a period of time. It's imaginative and uses the time-travelling idea in a different way (which is unexplained).
The animation is neat with watercolor-like backgrounds. The background score is good. The intimate relationship between the three main characters is explored very nicely but only Makoto receives proper character development.
One very strong point about this movie is how it shows that there are still people who always consider about other people feelings and try to help them always, irrespective of…

Mamoru Hosada does it again! Or, well, no, he did it here, 15 years ago, and has continued to do it every few years ever since... Anyway, he's pretty solidly my favourite director in anime now, so it almost feels repetitive to talk again about how much I love everything he does with his films. But I'm going to anyway.
Like every other film he's made, 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' is an incredibly tight, intricately pieced together narrative, with immensely loveable characters how feel real and authentic, always easy to invest in but never pretending to be anything other than real, flawed people. The unique texture and style to his films, from the simple yet mesmerising character designs to the world that feels entirely lived in, this film has a life to it that few others do. The story…

Story - We must have come across a lot of moments in our life where we wonder how differently events would have unfolded, should we have done something differently. The movie captures that feeling brilliantly with an array of such events, while not shying away from elaborating upon the repercussions of doing so. It excellently conveys the message that there would not be much progress forward if one grows complacent on their ability to go back in time to perfect an occurrence of an event.
Art - Through the eyes of someone watching this movie after around sixteen years of its release, I can say, for a fact, that I was not very satisfied with the animations and the art style sought. I come from the perspective of having watched movies created by Studi…

We follow the story of a girl... who... leaps through time... maybe you already got that? The concept is commonly used but it is pulled off well here and it is no surprise it got the awards it did, nor is it surprising it was so enjoyable considering the original novel was very well written.
The art style was decent for 2006 but has not aged very well in terms of general style, and in fact feels very generic.
The voice acting was very good and the music felt like it generally fit the movie very well and made the movie much more enjoyable.
Makoto Konno - Makoto is a positive and upbeat tom-boy.
Chiaki Mamiya - Chiaki is a student at a local high school who plays baseball with Makoto and Kousuke.
Kousuke Tsuda - Kousuke is a close friend of Makoto and Chiaki whose father owns a clini…

*My mother tongue is not English, so I use a translator.
This animation is a special one for me.
It was released in 2006, but I saw it the following year, in the summer of 2007, on TV.
I was 33 years old at the time and had been away from manga and anime for more than 15 years. When I was a kid I used to watch classic anime like Gundam, Captain Tsubasa and Saint Seiya, but like most people, as I grew older I moved away from them as something for children.
"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" is based on a novel, and a live-action film directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi was released in 1983, and was one of my favourite films. As a side note, that film's main character, Kazuko Yoshiyama, is portrayed in this film as the main character's aunt.
I casually turned on the TV and saw that the cartoon w…

You won't believe it, but when an author knows that a work of fiction has to work as a work of fiction, you get a good plot! You understand how it develops, you understand the cause-effect relationships and how the characters' actions affect it. You see the development of the characters, their formation and all in one film, when some anime 2 seasons is not enough. It is dramatic, romantic and, most importantly, heartfelt

Makoto. Protagonist, not stupid (no), not crooked (also no) and not flashy (not here either). I'd say a female version of Kyon, but she won't whine about anything, all in all a nice girl :3... ahem, you know what I mean.
Chiaki. The 'bully all the girls love' kind of guy and also the reason for the whole plot, why? See for yourself. A few tw…
