I knew the style was familiar. This is by the same director of "Night is Short, Walk On Girl", and I feel like I'd watch both of them anyways, in any order, and then compare the latter to the earlier. In this case, I have to say it in comparison for the film: it's evident how the unexpected, weird and psychedelic, surrealistic factor is strong throughout all of this. I mean, to be quite frank, the aforementioned movie didn't really wrap me around in much of an insane kind of feeling. I don't mean it's bad, but I honestly wasn't thaaat stunned by it. Aside from the impeccable artwork, the story and the storytelling style themselves didn't really get me as much as I was expecting, but as for "Tatami Galaxy", I've given it a little more thought and to be honest tried harder to enjoy the style…

The Tatami Galaxy: What If You Could Try Again?
Score: 9.5/10
Ever replay a choice in your head and wonder: "What if I'd done it differently?"
The Tatami Galaxy takes that feeling and turns it into a wild, colorful, deeply human story about regret, growth, and finally seeing what was in front of you all along.
The Story (Without Spoilers) A college student gets stuck in a time loop. Each time, he picks a different club, a different path, a different version of himself. Hoping this time will be the "rose-colored" life he's been searching for.
Each time, things go hilariously, tragically wrong.
But here's the twist: the failures aren't the point. The journey is.
This is a story about chasing an ideal life so hard, we miss the real one happening right now.
Why It Hits Different
* It…

One of the goofiest and quirkiest—yet also wittiest and funniest—shows I’ve ever watched. Its repeated variations on the protagonist’s university life could easily have become tedious, but each one introduces fresh absurdities while gradually revealing the larger purpose behind them. The distinctive, highly stylized animation perfectly complements the rapid narration and chaotic energy of the story. Meanwhile, the characters are ridiculously weird and exaggerated, yet their insecurities, selfish impulses, and unexpected moments of kindness make them surprisingly human and likable.
On top of all that, the protagonist’s obsession with achieving the perfect “rose-coloured campus life”—and his repeated failure to appreciate what is already around him—makes his character arc profound while rem…

The Tatami Galaxy is a complex masterpiece which centers around one fundamental problem of life- the myth of arrival. Nietzsche mentions this, and essentially defines it as the postponing of one's life and rejection of vital essence in the present in exchange for the pursuit of some idealized other, be that some other version of yourself or some other place. The great enemy in this respect is the idea that you cannot be truly happy until you are that person, or until you have reached that place. The Tatami Galaxy, with wit and charm, totally eviscerates this concept, and lays bare what the myth of arrival can rob you of in your daily life, even in situations and scenarios you think might be a waste of time. Furthermore, this anime holds a special place in my heart as my 300th anime, and as…

I feel like I've watched this too late in my life. When I was around 16, I would've probably needed the message of just accepting your mistakes as a part of life, but nowadays it seems so self-evident that it feels almost aggravating to see the main character struggle to figure this out for eleven episodes straight. The repetitive structure of the show doesn't really help - a lot of the stories feel very same-y, which means, if the story misses for you, it doesn't miss just one time, it misses every time the story's cycle begins a new iteration. There are a few outliers though, and i'd say the show is the most entertaining when it adds something else into the main mix of a confused teenager figuring out their life, like the two mentors episode for example. The artstyle is unique, and even…

It is refreshing to see an anime with actually good conclusion / ending as of latley alot of series fumble when it comes to endings , meanwhile yojouhan shinwa taikei did not fail, it was able to keep you hooked to the series while not fully understanding what is happening and managed to connect all strings at the ending while keeping small hints across the episodes , evendough it might fell repetitive a bit but this is the whole point of show and it become clear at the ending . On the other hand , characters are also all well built as all contain some level of depth to them not juat a 2d type of characters, showing there good writing , and also amazing animation and animation style I liked the diffrent uses of othere styles and real life footage , at the beginning you might not like it bu…

"If I had just done X, maybe my life would be Y." That’s the kind of lie we tell ourselves to survive the weight of a thousand unmade choices. The Tatami Galaxy is built entirely out of that lie, and then proceeds to dismantle it with a smirk, a headache, and a lot of talking very, very fast. The series constructs a narrative that revolves around regret, possibility, and the endless search for an ideal version of youth. The story unfolds within a university setting, yet the focus extends far beyond ordinary campus life. Instead of presenting a straightforward coming of age journey, the narrative repeatedly examines how personal choices, hesitation, and unrealistic expectations shape the way a person experiences life. The central character is an unnamed university student who enters college…

As of writing this, I've watched this series a couple of times and I feel like I should share my opinions about the world, the characters, and the overall ideology behind Tatami Galaxy.
Before I get into the review, I can't help but mention that I am currently consuming a Samyang Buldak Hot Spicy Chicken Ramen. It's the one that comes in pink. Now, I really enjoy the Samyang Spicy Chicken however, I can't really recommend the pink one. The inclusion of the cheese powder stuff really muddles with the spicy sauce and creates a really awkward taste. It's the same awkwardness I've experienced with the Habanero Lime flavor. I don't get why you would ever enjoy habanero and lime together, but whatever, I can honestly say it's my least favorite of them all.
Now about the pink package noodles, y…

There’s no graceful way to say this: The Tatami Galaxy is a weird anime. It’s fast, overwhelming, and sometimes so dense you’ll feel like you’re back in college failing a class you didn’t even remember enrolling in. But somehow? It’s brilliant. It’s about a college student who is convinced that if he just makes the right choices joins the right club, talks to the right people, becomes the person he thinks he should be then he’ll get his perfect “rose-colored campus life.” Spoiler: he doesn’t. He fails. Repeatedly. He gets stuck in this surreal time loop where every episode resets his college life, and no matter what he does, he ends up miserable. Sometimes hilariously miserable. Sometimes existentially miserable. But always… stuck.
And it sounds bleak, but it’s not. Not really. Because so…

Pure filler. If you insist on watching this garbage, take my advice: Watch episodes 1-2 and skip as much as you want (ideally everything) to 11-12. The show as a whole and eps 11-12 are actually made worse by having seen the redundant filler in between since it's all recapped anyway and becomes boringly spoonfed redundancy of beating an uninteresting dead horse otherwise.
The MC is the generic turbo-virgin 3000 who refuses to ever actually have romance with a woman despite his sole character trait/motivation of wanting to have romance (so he spends the entire show pointlessly cockblocking himself for no reason other than the usual that the author is incapable of writing romance and so strings the audience along writing filler instead).
This isn't romance, nor mystery, nor suspense, and…

Tatami Galaxy is a show that deeply frustrates me
If I stopped anywhere before Episode 10, I would have written a scathing review (a lot of remnants of which remain in this one) about how much this show sucks and is overrated.
And then it pulls an 11th hour face turn.
This show has a lot in common with Welcome to the NHK for me, a show which I also didn't particularly enjoy, but it's fascinating to compare them for me.
I'll start with the cast. I hate this cast.
The nameless MC (who I guess is named Watashi according to MAL) is a complete and utter jackass. I am pretty sure the show is aware of it but that doesn't make it more enjoyable. He spends the show joining random clubs for his "rose-colored campus life" so he can get a "raven-haired maiden" (ick) and fucking it up because he's…

**Through the years, this work has been repeatedly venerated as a masterpiece, its status seemingly unassailable.**
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy), an adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi’s novel by the inimitable Masaaki Yuasa, is less a conventional narrative and more a fevered meditation on the labyrinthine nature of choice, regret, and the illusory pursuit of an idealized existence. Within its kaleidoscopic structure, time does not adhere to the rigid linearity of cause and effect but instead loops back upon itself in an endless recursion—a purgatorial reel of youthful disillusionment where every path, no matter how meticulously selected, inexorably leads to some permutation of disappointment.
*Disclaimer: This is an earnest reflection, written with complete honesty and the true…

A story of a young man who wants to experience everything out of his college life, but who is bound to his own reality. What is a rose-pink, perfect college life, when you can have a whole galaxy inside your mind, rerolling possibilities, all stored inside four and a half tatami's worth of space? The rejection of a choice's limitations is a choice in itself, just like the denial of its consequences is. Reality gives The Possibility—and while you may not be able to explore the whole galaxy, you always possess the right to accept your own path.
"Tatami Galaxy" is a slow burn. Its first half can leave a dry aftertaste with its repetitiveness, but the closer you get to the ending, the clearer you can see the whole image—not that sophisticated, but simply beautiful; humanly warm, like a holdi…

If there is one word that can describe this anime, Disconcerting might be a suitable word, I personally was confused even until eps 6, in eps 7 I realised that so far what I had watched, all the scenes I had gone through had a Fudge continuity, only this time I was made that confused by a "Japanese cartoon".
the changing artstyle also added to the mysterious and confusing impression, when talking also all the characters were really fast talking, especially Watashi the MC, But every word from every char in this anime has its purpose and purpose clearly depicted, just because I was supplied with that much information in a relatively short time, obviously my brain overheated, it's really that complex a story according to me, or maybe it's just me who is lacking to grasp the story, at least w…

THIS IS A SPOILER-FREE REVIEW
After the massive boom in popularity of anime in the west, a new faction of anime fans became more and more vocal in the anime discourse:. A kind of “elite” group of anime fans reject everything popular and mainstream and focus on a very small number of shows that have a more niché and artistic vibe, with some great examples being “Serial Experiments Lain”, “Gunbuster” or “FLCL”. “The Tatami Galaxy” has always been held as one of the most beloved show in this category and I went into it with the perfect elite mindset. But is this show like what everyone says?
Story – 9/10
The story in this show is fractured and each episodes is essentially a retelling of the same events back to back, but every episodes stands out and leads our main protagonist on a differen…

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this one. It had been touted as a strong comedy, so at the least, I expected to get some laughs out of it and see it in a package that merits the attention this series has received over the years.
While I can't say the comedy worked for me or that I consistently enjoyed each episode... I kind of loved it anyway. I put that down to two reasons.
First, the overall package is far greater than the sum of its parts. It's a time loop story, and like so many of its kind, it builds iteratively. What is particularly interesting is how it builds and pays off that iteration. Our lead, Watashi, isn't aware he's going through this... well, not fully anyway. He experiences déjà vu and, at random moments, seems to recognize that certain things have either played…

Okay, so I just finished watching "The Tatami Galaxy," and I've got to say, the art was absolutely awesome! For some, it might come off as overly artsy or a bit complex (pretending to be), but for me, it perfectly captured the whirlwind of emotions. The use of styles (cubism for being nervous with girls), the deliberate color choices (like red for drunk scenes and blue for sickness), and the textures really brought the characters' feelings to life.
The series explores the idea that we're each responsible for our own lives. It's a powerful message about taking control and not just letting life happen to you. Every day is a chance to make things better and not get stuck on what we wish we'd done differently. It's all about that self-growth journey, and I'm so here for it.
Each episode is l…

I watched Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (including the specials), also known as The Tatami Galaxy. Here are my thoughts:
Once I realized that the MC was a self-pitying young man who was envious of his peers and pining for romantic affection, I knew I was going to have a bad time. Seriously, I can't stand this kind of character. If you find this garbage relatable then you need to take a serious look at what kind of person you are.
The two central characters (MC and Ozu) are pieces of shit, and the story consists of them acting like pieces of shit but with some time-loop stuff thrown in. I pretty much hated everything about the writing in this anime. My enjoyment was significantly impeded by this. Most of the story revolves around the MC being the pathetic worm that he is and treating everyone a…

"The Tatami Galaxy" is a seriously sick anime series that explores the ups and downs of love, friendship, and being human. The show's super unique art style and fast-paced storytelling keep you hooked, and the way the main character jumps between parallel universes in each episode is lit AF. Plus, the show uses some mad symbolism and allegory to add some real depth to the story.
The story is pretty unique for its genre, and while there were some predictable parts, it's still dope because of the overall vibe and execution. Fans of this type of anime will definitely appreciate the story even if some elements feel a bit familiar.
The art style is super on-point for the vibe of the story, with some legit detailed and emotional character designs and backgrounds.
The characters are hella well-r…

There are so many things in life that we can find meaning in if we capitalize on the opportunities we have. There are so many missed chances if we focus on 'what could be' and 'what was'. However, there will always be meaning and beauty in reminiscing and looking back at your decisions, whether you grabbed your chances or let them go.
The Tatami Galaxy is a show that made me feel all sorts of ways. Although the first few episodes piqued my interest, I became a little bored with the heavy dialogue and the seemingly disconnected storylines in parallel universes. All the portrayals of Watashi's 'Johnny' were hilarious, and while some episodes were more interesting than others, all the puzzle pieces finally fit in place during the last two episodes. It gave me wonderful closure and made the e…
