This movie is a stylish trip that feels chaotic at first, but actually hits you with some surprisingly deep messages. It’s not The Tatami Galaxy, but it definitely feels like its spiritual sibling. It portrays youth the way it really is: messy, impulsive, full of random moments — yet strangely charming.
The main girl simply lives life to the fullest, while Senpai stays stuck waiting for fate to do the work for him. The contrast between them shows how we sometimes sabotage ourselves by expecting life to resolve on its own while everything just passes right in front of us.
There’s a scene involving clocks that hits hard — her clock moves slowly, while the clocks of the elderly move fast. An obvious metaphor: the older you get, the faster time flies. The movie is basically shouti…

This and the similar other animes by the same people (Tatami Galaxy, Tatami Time Machine) are definitely outstanding. Unique art style, goofy animation style, and just some really weird goofy things going on in the show. (In defense of this film's silliness, practically everyone in this film is drunk!)
Night is Short is definitely my favorite of the bunch, though.
There are several subplots which blip in and out of the characters' focus until everything is eventually unravelled and an ending takes over.
The film is short and sweet compared to the anime Tatami Galaxy.
Even though it doesn't look like a Ghibli quality film, it's still very funny and I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

Now THAT is how you fit so many morales and life lessons in a 90 minutes movie! This might've been one of the weirdest movies I've watched, but it was such a lively movie that can drift me apart from exchausting problems I faced in real life. They didn't want to complicate anything too much, just telling us to live our lifes however we want it to! Nothing's too late because everyone starts somewhere, and suffers during it while gaining it too. I love how a lot of details which was seemingly supposed to be funny also hides a very important lesson, example: The time ticks fast for older people who felt like they don't have much time left, as for the young girl, her time was ticking slow, cuz she is spending her time enjoying her life, she spends every minute of her life as she never had an e…

One of the most beautiful Japanese animated films, visually and aesthetically. A story written in a stream-of-consciousness style with lots of twists and turns and mischief, while still having a fairly literary soul.
There are some very beautiful moments here and there, such as the sophists' dance, the second-hand book fair, and the traveling musical. However, I find that this also causes a slight lack of consistency; the accumulation of twists and turns is a tad indigestible and prioritizes surprise at the expense of thematic strength, even though there is a fairly clear common thread running through the film (we are all connected to one another).
The choice to focus on the male lead's point of view is also not very interesting, even if it is well executed overall. There would have been…

Anyone who's ever passed a drunken night out on a college town or city campus will immediately understand what the f*** is happening in this film, without further explanation. I can’t think of the last time an anime, and an anime so abstract at that, managed to capture a real world experience so perfectly. The plot is wacky, the art certainly doesn’t tend towards the real, yet the actual Feeling of experiencing the movie will smack anyone who’s had a similar experience in the face with brutal nostalgia. Especially for someone old like me, who experienced all of this a long time ago, it was kind of beautiful to relive that period of my life. Trying to “run into” the girl or guy you have a crush on. Wandering through drinking contests, in what increasingly feels like battles of will, and end…

If I was to be told that aspects of everything I love in media would be combined into this film I wouldn't have expected it to be this outcome. The absurdism of this film is so engaging that it felt that I was along for the ride with all the other characters. Beautiful art direction had me in awe at some of what was on screen. I love the message throughout as well for as nonsensical it had been. I found myself not knowing where to story would lead next, appreciating all the whimsical motifs throughout. Would definitely reccomend for people looking for a work to sit down and fully take it. Before going in have an open mind.

I wish there was a genre or a tag to warn people about this type of content. I'd just call it nonsense, but as surprising as it is I realize now that just like in drawing, poetry, music or other mediums, anime also has people that would call any sort of nonsense an art. So I guess something like Dementia or Delirium or Surrealism could be more appropriate to not totally out those people. Still, there must be something to mark it as inappropriate for normal sane viewers.
A part of this nonsense is literally explained in-universe as a delirium from having a high fever. But that's only a really small part, so I'm not too sure why the author even bothered. I guess some other parts might be similarly explainable as alcohol intoxication, but that's more of a stretch.

I've just finished this anime, and as you can see, I recommend it, because it's definitely not the kind of movie you see on a daily basis.
"After building a train engine, Matthew Tiny leaves town when the factory owner claims it, but the engine has a mind of its own and decides to go its own way." That's a summary of Ra Ta Ta Tam, a book by Peter Nickl, a spiritual guide to the movie. The protagonist here is our very own Matthew Tiny.
Spending a long night discovering different tastes, flavors, people and places, enjoying life in the best way: that's the way to go. Many misadventures occur, the protagonists here are not placed opposite each other by coincidence, they fight for it, even at the risk of catching a cold or being caught by the college patrol.
Everyone has their own time, the…

I had a really good time with this movie. It's certainly got a lot of visual flair, often displaying moments and scenes in unique styles to do a lot of the storytelling visually. It can be a little blunt at times in the dialogue, sometimes to the point of hitting you over the head with its themes, but that honestly fits in well for me, especially as this is a movie where its two central leads need to be hit over the head. The Black-Haired Girl spends much of the movie charting a path forward and excelling at pretty much everything she does, but can't perceive anything beyond that path, including her own feelings or those of the people who stumble into it. By contrast, Senpai has trouble moving along his path, stumbling the entire way as he endlessly pursues his goal of having the Black-Hai…

I watched Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome, also known as The Night is Short, Walk on Girl. Here are my thoughts:
This movie is the spiritual sequel to The Tatami Galaxy (Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei), and I enjoyed this movie much more because it didn't have the awful whiny MC that made me dislike The Tatami Galaxy so much, although other familiar characters are present, such as Higuchi and Hanuki. The art style is also quite similar to The Tatami Galaxy – I appreciated it. The visuals are creative, unique, dynamic, and entertaining to admire; it is a nice satisfying visual feast. Overall this is a very 'artsy' movie that would be enjoyed by those who like avant-garde abstract experimental stuff. That said, the OST and voice acting are nothing special, in my opinion.
There isn't much of a coh…

The constant connections and bonds formed through totally aimless wandering and happenstance within such a short amount of time make for a movie really rich in an atmosphere that simultaneously feels so comfortable and surreal. Masaaki Yuasa has shown time and time again that he's got a real knack for adding a sense of exaggerated wonder to the most mundane of things and revealing the magic beneath it in a very unique and engaging way, but I think that this is his best work in that regard. The pacing and the way the writing felt like ADHD incarnate also helped a lot of this atmosphere I feel, with absolutely constant shifts between subplots happening every 10 - 15 minutes in ways both seamless and jarring, as if the film was similarly following the path of girl where it was gleefully movin…

The animation and graphic quality are good. Musics are nice. Characters are simple yet endearing. And the story is... a feverish drunk dream rendition. One can totally watch this while on low-brain-capacity mode.
Nice experience overall.
Visibly that's not a long enough review for MAL...
"Here are a few ideas of what you may want to include:
Is the story unique? If it was predictable, did you enjoy it anyway because you like this genre/set-up? -> 'tis a feverish drunk dream rendition, of course that's unique ! especially with such a cute art style
Do you think the art style is fitting for the story? -> errr... maybe ? I guess it makes it easier to catch the "fun".
Were the characters well-rounded? Did they have flaws and strengths, or were they unusually strong/smart/stupid? -> we don…

*This isn't an exceptionally long review but I'm writing it because this movie was interesting enough*
If you enjoy good comedy with a romantic plot then this movie is definitely worth a watch, but not the reason why I think it's so good. The best part about this movie was that the issues it represents are so real and raw. Love not being something you can control despite the placement of it maybe not being the best, the growing pains of a college student and the pressure of their image in public along with the stigma of not dating someone, the fickleness of aging and how time is perceived differently by young people and the old.
The main character really stands out because she's essentially a vessel for the viewer. Her personality allows us to delve further into the plot of the movie. Sh…

My one shame as an Irish person is that I don’t drink. My mindset towards alcohol was that if watching shitty ching chong cartoons made for autistic Japanese babies was enough to develop a crippling addiction that ruined the relationships I had with those I cared about the most, then maybe throwing alcohol or any drug into my body might be the worst idea ever. That being said, I am still Irish. I have obviously gone on nights out to pubs, and The Night is Short: Walk on Girl is a film that best encapsulated to me the atmosphere one might have on these sessions.
The film is split up into three parts, and the opening segment is what I have dubbed “the inside segment.” – it perfectly captures what it’s like inside of a pub on one of these nights out. It’s loud and abrasive, full of charm and…

Night is Short, Walk on Girl is a film directed by Masaaki Yuasa which I watched because of a podcast named Trash Taste. The story is about the mc who chases a girl of his dreams. While this girl continues her fateful journey along the lively streets of Kyoto, she always seems to encounter the mc which was surprisingly her upperclassman. Now, could this be what we call destiny?
As you watch the first few minutes of the movie, you will notice its not-so-familiar art which you will soon find pleasant for the eyes. Some say that the animation is weird because it is made in an abstract way of showing details but I believe was beautifully presented. The story was written pretty well, and was fully packed with philosophy, romance, arguments & debates in life which you will quite notice as you…

Comparisons to The Tatami Galaxy are obvious with similar characters, plot, artstyle, and general fast pace and joie de vivre. Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, differs to me is that it feels like it takes everything from the show and relaxes it just a bit. I know the dialogue is fast-paced and crazy and the style can be hard to wrap your head around at first, but The Tatami Galaxy felt like it had a more abstract style with quick cuts and less of a plot than here. This focuses more on the girl in this relationship who has a bottomless stomach and wants to try to alcohol, and gets wrapped up in the adventures of a pub crawl and a campus festival over the course of one extended night, while senpai is the nervous guy who doesn't have the courage to directly ask her out but still goes to great le…

This is a review for both Tatami Galaxy and Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome, but I'll try to keep it more on Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome.
The thing many people love/hate about the works made by Masaaki Yuasa and Tomihiko Morimi (Tatami Galaxy and The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl) is the strange and "weird" style of these animes. I watched Tatami Galaxy for the first time when I was 16, the first two or three episodes were absolute nonsense to me -someone who had just started watching anime.
Two years later, I watch Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome, and I'm confused about everything for the first 20 minutes of the movie. As the story progresses, I find myself lost in its world and the chaotic state of people and things. I finish the movie and suddenly realize that I'm smiling. That's e…

Keeping the original spirit alive, relatability to the concepts and making things relaxed adding to the overall entertainment. This movie is the sequel to Yuasa Masaki’s masterpiece, Tatami Galaxy. And boy have they kept the original spirit alive with the absolute randomness and ridiculousness or Yuasa Masaki. Just brilliant.
Story and theme:
The movie revolves around our 2 protagonists and the night they spend in the streets of Kyoto. If you wonder just what all can they show in a single night and what all is even possible. This movie will give you quite a pleasant surprise and trust me no matter how hypothetical or unrealistic it feels, once you let go of your pre-set perspective, you will be amazed at the sheer absurd and sublime adventures of the night.
So our main protagonist is a…

Overall: 9/10
Life is just another optimistic girl traveling the streets of Kyoto, along with a fun ensemble of strangers, as she faces a drink-off contest with a mythological drinking god.
A recipient of the Best Animation in the 41st Japan Academy Award, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl is a story about Otome, a raven-haired girl, and her long night of partying filled with alcohol, book fairs, and school festivals. It is also a story about her “Senpai” and his journey in winning Otome’s heart.
Directed by visionary director Masaaki Yuasa, this film surely packs a lot of visual flairs. The “out of the box” animation and use of colors perfectly suit the surreal atmosphere that the film imposes, which the director trademarked as his style. Adding to that, it makes it more en…
