Summer Wars

Summer Wars

Introduction

OZ, a virtual world connected to the internet, has become extremely popular worldwide as a spot for people to engage in a large variety of activities, such as playing sports or shopping, through avatars created and customized by the user. OZ also possesses a near impenetrable security due to its strong encryption, ensuring that any personal data transmitted through the networks will be kept safe in order to protect those who use it. Because of its convenient applications, the majority of society has become highly dependent on the simulated reality, even going as far as entrusting the system with bringing back the unmanned asteroid explorer, Arawashi. Kenji Koiso is a 17-year-old math genius and part-time OZ moderator who is invited by his crush Natsuki Shinohara on a summer trip. But unbeknownst to him, this adventure requires him to act as her fiancé. Shortly after arriving at Natsuki's family's estate, which is preparing for her great-grandmother's 90th birthday, he receives a strange, coded message on his cell phone from an unknown sender who challenges him to solve it. Kenji is able to crack the code, but little does he know that his math expertise has just put Earth in great danger. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I went into Summer Wars expecting a simple anime family story, but it turned into something much bigger and more emotional than I expected. The story follows Kenji, a shy math genius who gets pulled into a huge digital crisis while visiting Natsuki's family. I really liked how the movie balances the massive virtual-world conflict with the much more personal story of a big family coming together. The animation is beautiful, especially the contrast between the colorful OZ world and the warm, detailed family scenes. The characters aren't all equally developed, but the family dynamic feels lively and believable. What I enjoyed most was the feeling of everyone coming together when things go wrong. It's exciting, funny and surprisingly emotional without becoming too heavy.

This movie is the most reddit 100 wholesome chungus dogshit I've ever seen in my life. Queue the start with generic cuck protagonist being roped into pretending to be his crush's boyfriend at her family home during summer. Fine... except the two get virtually zero character development the entire movie. Instead, the main girl spends her time being really wet for her cool uncle instead of this feckless loser. The majority of the film is spent exploring the *beauty* and *chaos* of family life in the most eye-rolling pretentious way possible. Really, it's about this family being comprised of weak pathetic men who practically worship the matriarch grandmother. This movie is so unsubtle about this that there is actually a line of dialogue where one of the men of the clan literally says this. "Y…

I was born in 2005 meaning I started watching animes outside of those on kids channels around the age of 11 which was in 2016 meaning I didn't experience much of the legendary animes when they came out, however I took an interest in them and watched them. To this day I am eternally grateful to my 5th grade teacher who was a Guy who loved anime and video games and is even teaching now in Japan to have shown us this movie alongside Totoro before summer vacations, considering my age I was way too young to watch other animes and I didn't think much of it at first however now that I am turning 21 this year I realised that without this movie I would have never even thought about watching anime. there is such a distinctive feel to it that I've rarely felt in other anime movies or movies in genera…

Don't get me wrong, this is a pretty good movie. However, it confuses me how there is so much critical acclaim for it when there are some plot holes I feel make it less compelling than it could have been. Definitely a great family movie but could have used a little more work in the writing department. This is often framed and promoted as a family movie but it really just feels like a kids movie. As a kids movie I obviously cannot judge it by the same merits that I could a non-kids movie, but since it is marketed as a family movie I feel it is fair to point out why this is not a movie for anyone outside of a very young agegroup. The large cast of characters are both the movie's strength and its weakness. It is unique to have so many characters in a single movie and be able to pretty effect…

During the climax of the film, when Kenji is decrypting the codes that Love Machine was making, I cannot lie, I got more pumped up than most modern action anime have gotten me in forever. Seriously, he starts decrypting them so hard that he starts bleeding because he's processing them so hard. I've heard of professional heavyweight lifters who go through a similar process when straining themselves so hard, but here I was, very tense. What an amazing climax. All the family drama between the characters was really well done, which really helped to make the climax feel tighter, since it felt like all the characters were coming together to save the day against the Love Machine. (although not every family member got involved, like the baseball guy and Kazuma's dad but pretty much everyone.) I th…

"Summer Wars" is a really nice, calming, family based anime. It was really fun to watch it. As a die heart Anime fan since my childhood, I would say that its really good to watch some animes like this. Its not important that we always watch anime with great budget or bet styles, sometimes we should watch anime like these also just for a change of pace. It's kind of sweet and generous, It's funny also, thriller also, has a bit of drama also, but in the end it made me happy and I didn't even got to know when did I started laughing. So I hope that you' all might be getting what I 'm trying to convey right?. Give it a shot!! Till then Happy Watching Folks:) Stay happy and spend time with your family!

After having watched Wolf Children years ago, I'd never really thought about seeking out another Hosoda film. It was a nice little movie, but felt kinda safe and stiff in its approach. Today I decided why not try out Summer Wars, just give it a shot and see what happens! What I got was the exact opposite of my expectation. I was severely mistaken for thinking Hosoda was a cautious director, as this movie ended up being a flawed, yet completely unique experience. For one, I respect the hell out of this movie. It delves into the philosophy of the family unit, importance of human interaction, and creates a unique visionary experience with a variety of characters in a massive ensemble cast. But it also tries to function as a thriller "save the world" action flick about the fear of technology…

A showcase animation in animation and heart. The depiction of real life is standard fare but the virtual world of OZ pops with striking avatar designs (at least two of them) and many moving bodies all pasted on a white background. Summer Wars recalls War Games but with a greater emphasis on strength through family. The family is mostly a joy to watch with none of them grating which helps maintain the movie's pace. The scope of the movie starts fairly small befitting the rural setting but quickly blows up to a ridiculous extent which is a bit of a shame because the concept of a whole war waged in a fairly contained environment without the awareness of others is intriguing. All in all, Summer War is fun and sweet movie with popcorn visuals and appeal.

For a person who has enjoyed Japanese works for many years (video games, manga, animation, and at least light novels), Summer Wars surely is the archetypal work of the Land of the Rising Sun. Of hope, family, embitterment, never giving up, miracles, and triumphs in the end. Well, life is about hope and trying or giving our best; otherwise, there wouldn't be any steps for progress forward. This game reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy XVI. When all seems lost, there's still hope. Art: 6-7/10 The art was great in the year it was produced. Characters: 6-7/10 Typical Japanese characters. Plot: 9/10 I like it when all hopes are lost and a new one springs out. Believing is never easy, but without believing, there's no miracle to happen without work sprouting from the initial belief and hope. I'…

Summer Wars was okay. I didn't love it, but it was a fun watch. The pacing of the film is weird. I think the film is best when you're getting to observe this family, and their love for their matriarch. Watching her step up to encourage everyone in positions of authority and leadership in her community during the phone call scene was a good character moment. That and her card game with Kenji, asking him to take care of her granddaughter are probably the best character moments in the film. However, Kenji's character never really steps up to meet Granny Jinnouchi's request. His role in the story is pretty mid. He does tell Granny that he doesn't believe he's capable, but we never see him struggle with himself to meet that challenge. He feels like a background character. Kenji's weak role pair…

Summer Wars. Mamoru Hosoda The guy who made A girl who leapt through time. He knocked it out of the park | Get it cuz of the baseball references ;) | The Story is quite complex and weird. Oz is a online platform where it is just as important as real life. people use it daily for their jobs, credentials, taxes, and much more. It is a very critical piece of software. And it can run on about anything (IT was running on a landline haha) But then this guy, Kenji, was working at Oz when he solved a complex math structure and gave his account away as a primary key. And then Japan, who relies on Oz, descended into Chaos. I will not spoil the rest since it is a very interesting movie but the story is good. The romance felt *a little* forced but eh you give what you take. The Music: Backgr…

Maybe I should not have watched Summer Wars following Your Name 2016 and The garden of words 2013 as they are hard acts to follow but Mamoru Hosoda third film it is not like I imagined it to be from the trailers (I had seen over the years) and it is not the film I hoped it be or wanted. But what it is...is a fine beautifully animated film with a good English dub. If you're not looking for more than this then this film is fine. From the trailers I had seen I thought it was going to be a VR / AR / MR - ready player one type of film because it's about social media and a virtual net world almost identical to the oasis. It looks like it or at least the metaverse from Snowcrash and the film seems to switch from hand drawn traditional style to clean cut CGI which I loved and would like to see…

It’s a mix of a Ghibli film, SAO, and a sports anime, yet it somehow works. It really does capture a feeling of wild summer shenanigans, and of being that awkward nerdy kid who usually spends their whole summer in front of a computer but is suddenly forced to socialize… and finds that it’s actually not that bad. Featuring the Japanese countryside, family drama and the importance of family bonds, being able to jump inside a video game, and a lot of tense and exciting moments (sometimes a bit too over the top, but if you have the suspension of disbelief it manages to fit and feel fun in an absurd way) even though you know it’s going to end well; it’s ultimately a very hopeful and cheerful anime. Has a couple cringey moments (don’t they all though?) but overall worth a watch.

The first thing I watched this film, one character. OK, let's go to [Character] I love the whole character, each character gets their own big role, especially I respect the takeda family grandma, she is really amazing and wise, that is our MC who is good at math especially last time, crazy brain works hard, and for the family takeda which has a branch that expands in japan, i like everyone in it, they have their own character, master the storyline with complex and fun. [Story] Hoho here it is, this story is amazing, how the story is steamed in technology, progress, gamers, and life. there are no plot twists or things that irritate me, lastly it's also amazing how i see things crazy. [Art] suitable for anime like this, get comedy, get stories too, if the art is changed to the 2020 versio…

This is one of those movies that on the surface really doesn't seem like it should work at all, I mean, it's part romance while also strongly tying into themes as seemingly tried and true as the power of family and how family should also stick together, while also having a plot about hyper advanced video games that also have access to an absurd amount of information that could change the world. Not only did this manage to end up all fitting cleanly and cohesively into the film, but it also managed to go above and beyond and make every element have a nice throughline and conclusion that made sense and didn't feel like an unnecessary inclusion. I love the way that basically every part of the story ties back into the concept of regret and attempting to make amends for what you've done while f…

tl;dr: A simple but well made family film about the increasing importance of digital technology and the everlasting importance of family. Summer Wars is an anime film directed by Hosoda Mamoru. It pulls a lot both in terms of visual style and plot elements from Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game, another film that he directed, which was already pulling a lot from the Hollywood 1983 film WarGames. The core of both of those films was essentially the dangers of technology, a theme that this film also looks at somewhat, though it differs quite a bit from the other two in that it spends just as much time emphasizing the importance of family. The plot involves the protagonist Kenji going to help out at his classmate Natsuki’s grandmother’s 90th birthday. This birthday is a pretty major affai…

What is this anime? It is about Facebook's new Metaverse they are trying to push out. Except in this world it has already happened and Facebook is called "OZ" instead. The whole world essentially runs on OZ. Then Oopsie Whoopsie! OZ has a virus! Many essential services get taken down and the MC is accidentally responsible for it all. We watch his journey as he defeats the virus and saves the world. Did I enjoy it? It sure is an odd film, with bright, abstract colors. And game (OZ) character designs that dare I say are unnecessarily creepy/unnerving. This film would work well if you needed something to watch on family night, especially if your kids are gamer-obsessed. (unless your kids get nightmares easily. like foreal the character designs are messed up.) The random bouts of comedy are w…

Haiku review: They pretend to date Going to see great-grandma And prove Ozbook sucks Excessively long prose review: “Summer Wars” feels at first a bit like a Ghibli movie, with a sprinkling of KyoAni, even though it’s MadHouse – but quickly becomes more like “War Games,” the great 1983 Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy (during her brief cute period) live-action movie. We begin with two geeks at computers. They are low-level maintenance guys at a Facebook-ish thing called Oz that apparently is essentially a Second Life skin on Facebook – that also controls everything in the world. They’re interrupted by cute and popular Natasuki, who wants to hire one of them for a part-time job at her distant family home for four days, in one of those only-in-anime situations. Math whiz Kenji wins the…

Well this was not what i was looking for when i googled math-themed anime but it was still fun to watch. In general i like the continuously high tempo that summer wars got. Emotional scenes were too cheap but somehow i am ok with them. I dont think math guy really act like math guy at all. There were a few inconsistencies that way obvious but again it was ok bcs this is not a movie that offers you 100% sci-fi it offers just fun. I feel like there could be some easter eggs with the numbers shown i didnt really examine them. Overall it is actually enjoyable if you dont overthink about it. So 7/10.

This show is boring. This is the most cliche show that I've ever seen. You can guess the ending halfway through. The plot is very bad. The OZ system was very chaotic and filled with bugs and bugs that just can't explain. In this show, nothing makes sense. The side character accomplished nothing. The relationship between Kenji and Natsuki is so badly designed it makes the romance in SAO season 1 looks slow. Why the biggest server in the world can be hacked by some random teenager overnight? Why would they design the "hacking program" to just destroy the world as its purpose? Why would they link nuclear bomb to some server that can get hacked this easily? There are so many questions in this show that no one can answer. The only reason I am giving this show a 3 and not a 1 is that the anima…
