When I started watching this show, I wouldn't say that I had low expectations necessarily. It's a classic, revered by people who know their anime, who have been into this long enough. I haven't, so naturally there were some expectations to be met. Especially considering the fact that this has been on my PTW for over a couple years. So, how was it?
The story is set sometime in the future, ahem- 2026, which, yes, is like two days away. Anyway, it follows Yuko, a young girl and her family, who have shifted to Daikoku city, where Augmented reality could very well pass off as reality. Anything more than that would be bordering spoiler territory so I shall refrain. What I will tell you though, cutting to the chase, is that Dennou Coil is a really good show.
Yes, it is a slow starter, too slow…

I'm of two very distinct minds on this one.
On the one hand, I love the concept of this series. There are some really cool concepts at play and it makes for an interesting and mostly engaging world. The more we learn about the cyberworld as portrayed here, including how it's accessed through the glasses, the various errors that pop up and resulting obsolete spaces, and in particular the variety of illegals on display, the more interesting this gets. This series is at its absolute best in its first few episodes and roughly in the middle of the series when it just delves into these concepts without relating them to some wider ranging story, and if the whole series had been nothing but that, this would have been a great ride that I'm sure I couldn't help but recommend, particularly with this…

"But actually, what is real? Does being able to touch things make them real? If something can't be touched, does that mean it isn't real? What things are really, truly here? What things are actually here for sure?"
Technology has, historically, always belonged to the young generation. When a new breakout in technology is made, it's the kids that find themselves most savvy with it, as well as have it influence their daily lives in every way imaginable. For millennials it was the computer, for generation z it was the smartphone, and for generation alpha...
Well, we don't know yet. But for the fictional gen alpha of Dennou Coil, it's Dennou technology---AR technology that lays the cyberspace over the real world and blurs the lines between what is real and what is not.
And that is why Denno…

The thing that had drawn me to this show was its amazing animation. This is as good of a tv show is going to look. Not only that, it does a fantastic job of blending in the VR CGI effects with the standard animation, which is usually a major pet peeve of mine.
After now watching it, I can now also say the story is intriguing and engaging to recommend this show. It does start slow and meanders with filler episodes, but once the mystery becomes the main focus of the story, it shines.
Again, the animation is some of Madhouse studio's best. The character expressions are so detailed and immersive, it feels like a Studio Ghibli film sometimes. The visual style of the electronic world is flavorful not distracting. Any show with this level of animation will peak my interest.
The story is nothin…

Den-noh Coil is quite the polarized mixed bag of an anime with clear strengths and weaknesses. I will give it credit where it's due in the upcoming sections, but I'd like to jump head first into the elephant in the room. Den-noh Coil is, quite simply, too slow and too boring for too long. More than half of the program, probably closer to two thirds of it or more, moves at a snail's pace, does the absolute bare minimum to advance the plot and spends way too much time featuring characters that are ultimately minimally relevant. The "payoff" in the latter part of the show is overstated. Yes, it's significantly faster, more engaging and overall better than what came before it, but that's largely due to just how underwhelming the first chunk of the program is, which is not the correct way to do…

This 2007 anime does a great job of depicting a world where augmented reality (glasses) are an integral part of peoples everyday life. The augmented reality cyber world that the kids immerse themselves in seems so natural to their life. (Things like interacting with virtual objects, searching for a lost cyber-pet, hacking each others glasses for pranks, investigating urban legends. All things I could see myself doing as a kid if we had that technology.)
The first 13 episodes covers the slow buildup of the world, the characters, and their friendships as well as lays the groundwork and foreshadowing to something bigger that is happening in the town. It's enjoyable, but slow and steady; quite light hearted. There a few mini-arcs that all work to build towards a killer second half. As a compa…

INTRO [Kira-bugs! Got to catch ‘em all!]
Dennou Coil is one of the best family oriented action series I know of. Although it is aimed at a younger audience it also has a lot of attention in its writing, visuals, and storytelling, easily elevating it to something far more than a proxy battle anime. What sticks out the most is its great presentation of augmented reality. You know, like in Pokemon GO where the world around you is full of digital creatures you can only see and interact with by using a device. It does that here, plus it gives the players the motivation to look around for resources they have to gather so they can cash them in for digital currency and with it buy all sorts of weaponry. It’s not a throwaway gimmick, it builds an entire world around it and explores it in numerous…

Title: Dennou Coil
This creators of this anime have done a tremendous job here. Starting from the beginning itself, they introduce us into the world they have built up and the tempo of the story keeps on gaining momentum till it reaches a fantabuluous cresecendo at the final couple of episodes.
The attention to detail with respect to building the world and developing the characters are just awesome. Dont miss to enjoy this anime if you have not already seen it.
The makers have succesfully crafted the mystery along the complete story and have also tied the loose ends very efficiently.
The story begins in the form of an adventure story but as the time progresses and the key characters are introduced, the story diverts itself to be an excellent thriller all over and the climax gives you…

Interesting story and concept, but very bland execution.
Characters are dull, ranging between being annoying (Kyoko) to lifeless (Yuuko, Kenichi, Denpa), with very little in between. The art, while pleasant on the scenery, is very ugly here giving characters somewhat simian features with horrible pear-shaped heads and ape-like snouts. Only one characters stands out (Megabaa), and it's not for its beauty either. I won't mind a show with visually unappealing characters, but it just adds to the dissatisfaction and when so much of the show revolves around their feelings that stands as an obstacle against relating to them. Were there many redeeming features elsewhere this would've been a non-issue.
Then there's the one antagonist, the Searchy (Sacchi) which is constantly showing up to fire la…

I think it took until episode seven before I got hooked on this show. It was a bit slow up until that point, but I couldn't drop it because I could sense that it was a very interesting take on the cyberpunk or techno-thriller genre.
Rather than focusing on criminals or corporations, this show focuses on the possibilities of the technology and what it might mean for the individual. The basic idea of uploading, or connecting consciousness with cyberspace, is not new, but it's normally done in a way that emphasizes it's downsides. You'd probably have a hard time convincing someone this show is deep because it's about kids and it isn't edgy, but it actually does get quite dark. However, the ultimate themes are growth and connection with others.
The way the writers used traditional Japanese (a…

Loved this series. It starts off with a twist on kids having hacker battles in the imagined future of this story's world. We're immediately treated to what is perhaps this story's strongest suite -- the character personalities. As this story developed, it was the interaction between the interesting characters that kept me coming back for more.
The story arc is actually a kind of sci-fi mystery. It would have been perfect if only the so-called cyberworld of the future made more sense. As it was, one kind of has to suspend sketpicism to allow the story's magical technology be what it is. At times, it felt more like an occult mystery story, but ultimately it didn't matter too much, because the payoff and satisfaction was in watching the main players resolve their personal differences with ea…

This show is best described as gits meets ghibli. It is a scifi show set in 2026 while being made in 2007 focusing on the internet merging into the real world via VR. The world that is created is the hook and the characters are the reason to love the show. There is a constant progression of what the world holds and what the characters can do. It is fun watching how the world works and we get to see this through the mc that moves into the town of where the show takes place. She learns about it as we do as most well told stories do. speaking of characters...
The cast is largely composed of children in elementary school just before going into middle school. Though they are much more mature than real children obviously, this is where the ghibil comparison shines through. The characters acts l…

電脳コイル – Dennou Coil is an excellent and unique science fiction anime that gives a glimpse of what a possible fusion of the real world with the digital world might look like in the near future. In 2007 it was futuristic, but today it seems to be available to everyone tomorrow. The show is credible and convincing, even if the beginning is a little confusing, because many of the little things make no sense at first. Be patient, as the series progresses the overall picture becomes clear and offers enthralling entertainment.
Story: good idea & directing & well constructed story with substance (10/10)
We become acquainted with a small group of children, who make the diverse possibilities of the overlapping virtual world, in short called "space", which is generated by special glasses, an integr…

PART ONE (eps 1-recap/13):
10/10, I may turn preachy or crusade-y for this; no space for lethargy when you're sHOOK.
- Plot: enrapturing, like sinking deeeep into a circus of delightful mechanisms and sorrowful tales. Plus amazing one-offs that embrace comedic absurdity. It's all I've ever wanted.
- Art: fluid/natural with bursts of extravagance, fleshing out unimaginable world designs. Strong focus on bringing characters to life, and you'll see everything from the awe-inspiring to the highly memeable.
- Sound: a tiny well-tempered orchestral pit sets up on your keyboard, following the screen and tearing up with you (uhh or TV you do you). Hands down my favorite soundtrack next to rakugo shinjuu.
- Characters: a roster of strong independent beings who don't need no exposition! They boun…

I had watched this without any idea what is it about. Oh, it's about kids accessing the internet via eyeglasses? Cool. Oh, they also have these virtual pets? Neat, just like Pokemon or Digimon. Oh, they could use data bits to trade for meta commands (metatags) that could be used as spells when there's a PvP ongoing? Just like an MMORPG with VR! Oh, the pets and metatags can actually assist these kids in accessing hidden parts of the web? Wait, is this still the kids' anime that I'm watching? Actually, it is.
Thus, the intrigue from this rather underrated (I could be wrong) anime starts to escalate. I thought it was fun and bizarre, but didn't thought it could also be thrilling. What I wonder though is that how come this is so und…

Taking place in a surprisingly plausible future, Dennou Coil's story revolves around a group of kids struggling to grow up in the first generation of a society influenced by the introduction of AR glasses. The glasses open up another side of reality, not unlike a child's imagination brought to life.
The show’s shy and squirrelly protagonist Yuuko Okonogi moves to a new city to live with her grandmother, accompanied by her younger sister and her AR dog. On her first day in town, she encounters a high-strung but good-intentioned girl named Fumie. She’s a talented hacker who's skilled at using the tool known as metatags and at avoiding the big red smiling robots known as searchamatons (or sachis) who serve as antivirus for the virtual side. The sachis zap away anything they find in outdated…

I am willing to bet that most people have never heard of Dennou Coil, because it flew completely under the radar. A lot of really popular anime premiered or were airing in 2007, among them the popular noodle fest Code Geass, quirky Gurren Lagan, and engaging Baccano, and as a result this show did not receive the recognition that it truly deserves. Dennou Coil is basically what you would get if you crossed a heady tech anime like Ghost in the Shell or even more comparably Serial Experiments Lain with something contemplative and mellow like Mushishi, another beautiful anime story that shares a lot of similarities in tone with Dennou Coil.
Dennou Coil is a critical examination of the increasingly central role that the Internet plays in our lives as young people of the 21st century. In parti…

I have seen more depth storytelling in this kid show than in some “Seinen” nowdays.
Yes, is a kids show but with such a great story and complex characters that you forgot that is actually for that market.
Story 8/10: the mayor problem in this show is the pacing, not even the plot, plot is great, is how first half is kind of slow (for some people boring), but not for me, I enjoy this show all time. Anyway, second half is full of mystery /plot twist and is hard to explain the story without giving mayor spoilers, so for Synopsis there is already one in the site. What I particularly enjoy the most is how characters faced the problems, was fresh due to the fact of being kinds yet mature.
Another plus will be that show is not predictable; I have watch soooo many “mistery” animes that in the…

This is a kid's show.
Yes, it deals with themes about death and moving on. Yes, it involves complicated plots and settings that'll have you double-guessing whether something actually happened in the show or not. Yes, it treats characters and events in a much more mature light than other kid's shows.
But none of that's gonna change the fact that this show, in its best and most genuine moments, is a kid's show.
This is a very different kind of show.
It's a show that frames mature events or themes through the eyes of a handful of innocently young children, all still in middle school. It's not a show about teenagers struggling through depression. Nor is it about adults struggling through life. It's about a handful of kids.
Because of this, the show is almost free from the limitations that…

Remember when you were a child? You and your friends were playing, talking about different urban legends and stories. Imagine this situation but add to it another layer of reality. That is Dennou Coil. That and much much more.
Dennou Coil starts in a pretty unforgivable manner. You are thrown into a world of near future where people can access virtual reality via special glasses. This VR is connected to everyday life and exists as another layer of reality. There are virtual pets, lasers, big funny looking antiviruses called Satchii and much more. And there is something else. Something perhaps more sinister hiding inside this space.
The story slowly builds up. Stakes become higher, and as the mysteries begin to get solved you are left with your jaw on the floor. I have no idea how creat…
