At its core, Shinsekai Yori is a story about social control. What means are justified in the pursuit of a harmonious society? What if the alternative is uncontrollable violence? As the protagonist grows up and uncovers the truths of her world, her choices gradually reshape both her society and herself. The show forces viewers to examine not only the societies they live in, but also how they choose to live within them.
Shinsekai Yori is my favorite show of all time, and I highly recommend everyone to watch this show. As an added bonus, the music in the show is phenomenal.

It's amazing how much this piece of art changes meaning as you get older. Such complicated and dense topics that you simply won't fully appreciate until you've matured and watched it multiple times. It's truly one of a kind and its messages sit with you long after you've finished watching. The ending remains unforgettable. Saki is a layered protagonist who is defined by her environment and her choices in a way that forces you to think about where you stand in life. The antagonist is phenomenal, especially for how little time he spends on screen. Highly recommend checking out again at different stages in your life.
Whenever I watch this I always find myself wishing more novels (not just light novels) got adapted into anime. There's such a strong voice to this show that can't be found anywh…

This is easily one of the best animes I've watched, despite its flaws. The plot is compelling, and really picks up a few episodes in. The setting is interesting even despite a few plot/setting holes. The animation isn't anything special, just good enough to keep everything moving smoothly.
I definitely had some issues with the ending, which turned out somewhat anticlimatic in regards to a plot point introduced earlier. But it was still very good overall.
I also like the use of naked mole rats as characters. Naked mole rats are a very weird animal, mammals but in some ways they act like ants.
Some other things that stand out from this show are an occasional historical reference. For example, if you've ever heard the anecdote of people clapping nonstop for Stalin you will recognize it in…

Beautiful work about the worst parts of humanity, that will make you question yourself.
Dealing with themes such as slavery or political struggle is no easy task, but this anime not only does that, but also manages to convince the viewer that it is a story worth watching.
At first, drawing you in with alluring, known and loved plot devices, typical setting (school) and characters that follow predictable patterns (group of friends). And just like that, the illusion shatters. Not fully, but just enough for you to feel a tiny bit unsettled. You see the cracks forming in the picture perfect world the characters live in. You experience the things happening on screen with the heroes - just like them you have to deal with emotions, forgetting, passing of time. But what makes this show different…

I had no idea what to expect here. I went in blind thinking cool! psychic powers! Boy was I not ready for what was in store. I am writing this fresh off the last episode so it may be a little soon for a review as I have not allowed sufficient time for all that has been layered upon me to stew. But I feel like I must write this now.
This anime was a wild ride. There is a slow build, a simmer. Something you sense brewing in the background, and you just can't shake the feeling that something is amiss. When the truth begins to trickle in, it just doesn't stop. Layers upon layers peel away to reveal a fruit you were not expecting to find.
Each time I thought the show peaked, it continued to peak again and again. It had me in my feelings, it had me at the edge of my seat.
I may have to read th…

Just watch it.
The story is exceptional and has good plot twists. It's been a long time since I watched an anime that presented me with such an unimaginable plot twist. The subtle construction of the twist in the final episodes leaves clues to the true origin of the monster rats, and I couldn't perceive it until it was literally spoken in the anime, because I was too engrossed to notice. The plot flows smoothly and nothing happens too quickly; the chain of events is well-done and kept me hooked from the first episodes.
The characters don't have an extravagant design, as they are normal people living in a "normal" society. However, their strength lies in their importance to the narrative. Each character has an impact on the story and serves to build some event or trigger…

If you hate yaoi/yuri please skip this anime
Disclaimer: I'm not homophobes, usually i love any type of romance
BUT ISTG I HATE THIS ANIME. In this anime "love" doesn't have a meaning and it hurts my heart. I remember watching this long longgg time ago and i can't even watch yaoi for months. I got traumatized.
Ok forget about the romance part, how about the anime itself? Terrible! The plot is messy. The timeskip also make us questioning our lives. If you want to say it's a plot twist, no it's not, it's hurting my brain and heart.
At the end of the day we can't really sympathize to the conflicts and can't even feel happy after reaching the ending.
In 2025 I still hope I can erase this anime (and King Ranking) from my memory. But at the end of the day...everyone has their own opinion on…

In a typical sci-fi you are shown advanced technology, machinery, robots etc. Imagine a sci-fi that has none of that!
In this show, modern civilization crashed due to humans developing psychokinetic abilities and annihilating each other, and we are 1000 years into the future. We get a tiny population of people living by the countryside.
How did a small amount of humans manage to survive?
Answer lies in behavioural genetics and ethology.
This is among the only shows I've seen that takes behavioural genetics and ethology seriously, to create a situation where no human can consciously harm another human, yet it can only take a single human to wipe out the whole population.
As someone that's taken courses related to ethology and evolution of social behaviour, I could spot concepts such as…

Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) is not the kind of anime that grabs you right away with nonstop action or an easy-to-follow plot. Instead, it asks for patience. The first few episodes are quiet, deliberately paced, and often confusing and that’s exactly why so many people drop it before the story has a chance to unfold. But for those willing to trust the journey, the payoff is extraordinary.
The first half of the series plays out like a strange, dreamish (even bi-sexual) coming-of-age tale. We follow Saki and her friends as children in a peaceful village where everyone possesses psychic powers. On the surface, life seems idyllic, even ordinary. But cracks begin to show almost immediately. Why are there so many strange rules in their society? What happened to the children who suddenly…

Shinsekai Yori, also known as Shinsekai Yaoi and/or Shinsekai Yuri, is a series that can honestly be described in one word, and that word is boring. It’s a series that’s only redeemable in one aspect only, and that is its worldbuilding. If that is the only thing you seek, then there is certainly some enjoyment to be found; however, the series mostly suffers when it tries to get its ideas across. Shinsekai Yori can’t really be described as a story, because the methods used to convey it are executed so terribly that the entire series honestly resembles a very boring lecture. In an attempt to combat this, the story attempts to make its rather boring storytelling more entertaining by adding in both cheap shock factor and homoerotic romance, all of which involve really uninteresting characters.…

I find it difficult to put into words what Shinsekai Yori actually is. The feelings it evokes are complex, but what I can tell you for certain is that this is something that you need to experience! This is just one of those stories that will move your heart and get you thinking, leaving you a changed man in the end. It might be hard to grasp what to expect when looking at it on the surface level, but believe me, Shinsekai Yori is definitely worth it!
You can see how it has been branded with many genres and I think all of them are quite apt. However, suspense horror is probably the most accurate descriptor. Don't get it twisted, this isn't some supernatural tale about ghosts and monsters haunting the innocent, it's something far deeper and far more real than that. Shinsekai Yori explores a…

Fellow seekers of truth, your mad scientist, Hououin Kyouma, has peered into the abyss of time and returned with knowledge most profound! The subject of today's analysis? Shinsekai Yori, a work so potent, so riddled with the eldritch machinations of fate that even I, the great Kyouma, found myself ensnared in its sinister embrace.
From the outset, this anime weaves a spell most insidious. The world it presents is not one of mere futuristic fantasy but a dystopian masterpiece sculpted with an eerie elegance. A utopia? Nay! A carefully curated illusion. A mask concealing the grotesque horrors lurking beneath. The story follows Saki and her companions as they navigate this society of psychically gifted humans, only to unravel a chilling history soaked in deception and blood. The Organization…

Civilization as we know it has ended, and in quite a spectacular and brutal fashion at that. (It is just as well - we probably are not destined for a peaceable ending as a species anyway.) We are flung many centuries into the future, where a new kind of civilization exists comprised of humans that can use telekinetic powers, and we follow the perspective of a young girl who comes of age and is finally able to use these powers, having undergone her rite of passage through the village elders. From there, we follow her throughout her youth, exploring what it means to grow up in a society where all humans have a Force-like superpower.
Shinsekai yori, or From the New World, is an epic character journey that explores several different themes - most prominently, the morality of a society of supe…

What makes a person? People say it takes a village to raise a child and in the case of this anime it very much rings true. What intrinsic details and elements go into making a person who they are and how they deal with their life? How we grow up, how we are raised. You know what it's like to be a child, to be a teenager.
This is easily one of the densest stories I've experienced. From the powers to the customs to the very fabric of the world they live in is very reminiscent of some elaborate social studies thought experiment. I won't lie by saying this is a casual watch, because it's anything but that. Your power of intuition and speculation will be put to the test.
This is a story that makes you think, the animation is mediocre at times (very reminiscent of a stock standard 2010's ser…

Art - 6/10 Some clear Dips in Visual quality during the season, the character designs look pretty good but the inconsistent animation and lack of innovation lead to a 6.
Characters - 7/10 There is alot of characters, Soo many that names are hard to remember even though i finished this a few days ago, and alot of the characters are just there for one certain thing to happen, Saki is pretty cool!
Story - 6/10 The ending was very satisfying and the last 5 episodes were by far the best of the show, but the middle drags soo much just for an expected but good twist at the end. From episode 3 - 18 it is really really boring and repetitive.
OST/Sound Design - 8/10 Just for the first ending, I think the first ending is genuinely amazing so im definitely bias towards it! but the rest of the sound…

It is a heavy, complicated anime about the distortion of history written by the conquerors. There is much to unpack, and I'm sure one can find many things to criticize, especially the point of view ultimately being held by people who had nothing to do with it and sympathize with what they find out, but still benefit from a completely broken system. I don't think it's much comfort to anyone on the other side of what is considered "the best that can be done" at the end.
But once the anime plays its slow, occasionally clunky hand, the impact is undeniable, and how it changes the view of the world at large makes it an experience that is almost necessary now that we have most everything built on "I don't see it, so it doesn't exist," or, "All of this is necessary and proper."

Shinsekai Yori is a slow-burn anime with a decent payoff by the end of the series. However, for some reason, I find myself unable to rate the series any higher than a 7, and upon further assessment, there are some faults in Shinsekai Yori. Foremost, its characters are lacking, and I didn't connect to any of them. Some argue that the show is more about telling themes and ideas. Yet, bland characters can be unengaging to viewers such as myself and make you ask, "Why should I care about the outcome of this story?"
Moreover, I found the animation wasn't the best out there. In one of the first few episodes, there are scenes with still images, which destroy the suspense. Then, in the second half of the show, they implemented poor-looking CGI. The CGI submarine stands out as looking awful. The a…

Shinsekai Yori is a rare thing: an utterly unique anime.
It's hard to place it in a genre, but dark fantasy and horror are probably the best bets.
It sets up a unique and disturbing retro-future with totalitarian elements out of Brave New Worĺd or 1984. The classical Japanese viĺlage aesthetic is at odds with the constant feeling of creeping unease that pervades the show.
Mostly it is a show you experience, alternately fascinated and terrified. In the end you will feel disturbed and uncomfortable.
It isn't everyone's cup of tea. Action is intermittent. The characters can at times feel distant, yet they still feel very real when the moments of fear arise.

This is one of those series that leave you absorbed after its end.
I want to start this review with the construction of its world, there are very few animes that have such a complex and well-crafted background of their world and Shinsekai has both of these things.
The characters, without being so charismatic, fulfill their role more than well, they are all more than necessary for the plot.
A well-crafted script, the dialogues and scenes will not let you take your eyes off the screen, everything is so intriguing from the first episode to the last and the soundtrack accompanies the sequences very well.
The weakest section of the series would be the technical one, there are episodes where the low quality of animation is noticeable in contrast to other episodes, this also with the scenic art
