Hunter x Hunter (1999) has something that the 2011 version, as amazing as it is, could never replace: an atmosphere entirely of its own. It's slower, darker, and in many moments, it gives a completely different weight to the characters' journey.
I love the 2011 version, but I've always found it interesting how this adaptation makes certain parts of the story feel more mysterious and even a little more dangerous. The soundtrack, direction, and older animation style create an identity that still works incredibly well.
Of course, the pacing can be an issue for some people, especially when compared to the remake. But for me, this version has an enormous amount of charm. It gives certain moments more time to breathe and creates a different kind of connection with the characters.

An adaptation that proves Hunter x Hunter can be even darker than many remember.
When people talk about Hunter x Hunter, most automatically think of the 2011 version. It was the adaptation that further popularized the work and introduced Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio to an entire generation. I myself watched that version first, so getting into Hunter x Hunter 1999 was strange at first… but also surprising.
The first thing that stands out is that this adaptation has a completely different atmosphere. While the 2011 version seems cleaner, more colorful, and visually accessible, the 1999 anime carries a heavy, almost melancholic identity at times. There's a constant sense of mystery and danger, something that fits very well with the universe created by Yoshihiro Togashi.
Furthermore, t…

I have seen 600 separate entries on this site and I can confidently say that this is one of the most beautifully animated things I have ever seen. The amount of detail in shots that appear for merely seconds, is unreal.
2011 definitely has its strengths but holy shid…
This is one of the last completely hand drawn series and it shows.
Greed island ova series is good but the change to digital is quite noticeable because of just how good this 99 version looks.
I’d recommend watching both versions at some point but this has such a feel to it and it is immaculate.

I watched all 62 episodes in the English dub and the VAs are so fitting for each character. Gon and Killua actually sound like kids and I noticed they add little voice cracks to make it sound realistic. Compared to the 2011 version, 1999 goes more into depth with the characters and it is very slow paced, actually taking its time for us to know each character. For example, I loved how they introduced Kite in the first episode and detailed Gons motivations for being a hunter and actually showed Aunt Mitos hesitation, they gave her more personality in this version unlike the 2011 version, the first episode Gon just rushes and leaves Whale island and immediately meets Kurapika and Leorio. We got to see more into Gons love of animals, which is a small detail I enjoyed.
Hanzo is actually funny…

HxH's dark atmosphere, dramatic storytelling, and late 90s/early 2000s anime style will always hold a special place in my heart. HxH deviates from traditional shounen anime or manga formats and includes deep philosophical questions and character analysis. The characters' motivations, conflicts, and developments are much richer than a story focused solely on action.
Sometimes the slow pace of the story can be boring for some viewers. However, this slowness is quite effective in terms of processing the emotional and psychological depths of the characters.
A production that has managed to gain its own unique place in the anime world by avoiding genre clichés. I believe that it is more successful and at the top of the list than many series that come to mind when it comes to shounen. The music…

This show manages to be highly entertaining thanks to its unique blend of animation, characterization, and plot, without resorting to the cliches that often ruin similar shows.
The story of Hunter X Hunter is imaginative and vibrant yet easy to follow. It's clear from the start that the series is about Gon reuniting with his father, but the path to achieving this goal is full of twists and turns that keep the story fresh. We are taken on a journey through a variety of offbeat situations, from the dangerous wilderness to a battle-stage tower with over 200 floors of increasingly difficult fighting tournaments. These situations help us understand the lead character's motivations and become invested in his cause. The other prominent cast members, including Killua, Leorio, and Kurapica, are al…

Such a good anime. Good characters, development, is simply flawless. A pity that the manga does not have a consolidated end yet, but I have faith that one day the author will be able to finish his creation, despite his condition. Important to point out that the villains are extremely well built, as well as the protagonists. I really like Chrollo Lucilfer, although in the arc in which he appears in the anime he is not very well developed. Despite the fact that he is not well developed, he remains a great villain because of this because of this lack of development, because he shows himself a a mysterious character, and this contributes to his personality.
In summary: It is a great anime, there are amazing characters, but unfortunately it doesn’t have an ending, but despite not having an end…

One of the best animes in anime history. The anime is about a small village boy named Gon," who is searching for his father and wants to be a hunter just like him. His adventurous journey unfolds many twists and turns with super good action and story plot. Even the antagonists of this series are worth loving and rooting for. This is the second anime after Naruto that is so well thought out and really well made. Higly reccomended. The plot is intriguing and the character development is impressive. Fans of Naruto will definitely enjoy this anime.
One of the standout elements of Hunter x Hunter is its exceptional animation quality, which is consistently top-notch. The fight scenes are beautifully choreographed, and the characters' movements are fluid and dynamic. The music is also memorable…

The latest version of Hunter X Hunter is great, but the original version of Hunter X Hunter is a Masterpiece.
The depiction of anime still uses traditional techniques, making it look artistic.
The atmosphere of the original Hunter X Hunter looks dark, and this is good, because it makes the story even more mysterious and tense.
If only Hunter X Hunter (2011) had used dark color tones, the results would have been much better.
The character designs don't seem to have changed much, and still retain their original Manga-like designs.
As for the story, it's pretty good. Tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Gon who decides to become a Hunter like his father. On the way, Gon meets good friends, such as: Killua, Kurapika, Leorio.
And this Hunter X Hunter Original has filled my childhood…

Absolutely incredible!
This anime is an explosion of action, comedy, and psychological drama
The combination leaves a jorney of a rollercoster of emotions that you'd never want to end
Like Yu Yu Hakusho (by the same creator) the first few episodes run quite slow, but once the story gets rolling it is unstoppable
HxH is still in keeping with YYH's style, but vastly improves on it
There's a much bigger focus on character developement, this gives more of a sense of watching the events that unfold thru the characters eyes and getting to know them on a more personal level rather than getting to know them and their story from a spectator's point of view
It also keeps surprising the audience with unique and imaginative battles

Hunter x Hunter is one of the most acclaimed shounen anime, as many people have watched the 2011 first. I watched this one first, and only switched to the 2011 version after the Greed Island OVA's. And let's just say I find this one to be the superior adaptation, even better than the manga, for several reasons.
Story - For those uniniciated, Hunter x Hunter is about the adventure of a young boy named Gon Freecs, who wants to be a Hunter - a proffesional bounty hunter of sorts - to find his missing dad. He's accompanied by Leorio Paladiknight, aspiring doctor, Killua Zoldyck, former assasin who run away from his family to find freedom and Kurapika, the last member of a clan who's looking for revenge - overcoming deadly obstacles along the way.
The story takes tons of interesting turns, wi…

I reviewed this iteration of Hunter x Hunter once before around the time I'd completed it, but recent events has made me return to this series and I've decided to re-review it for old times sake.
While much of the attention directed at Yoshihiro Togashi's supposed magnum opus "Hunter x Hunter" is directed towards its anime adaptation release in 2011 by Madhouse, the original anime adaptation produced by Nippon animation in 1999 is an unsung classic in its own right. Having seen and loved both variations, I've always felt that between the two, 1999 is my personal favorite. Don't get me wrong, 2011 is a brilliant anime in its own right. However, I do feel like it lacks the same punch the original anime had and to me it doesn't matter whether 2011 has consistent art or a 10/10 soundtrack. I…

Many of the long running shonen battle series from the late 80's all the way through to essentially now have been characterised as "Titular" and "Formulaic", the same cannot be said for Hunter x Hunter. Over the past decade Hunter x Hunter has earned its recognition as one of the best battle Shounen of its time, this success is in large part due to the immense popularity and success of Madhouse Studios 2011 adaptation of the original Manga. However many longtime fans of the series such as myself remember the series more fondly for its predecessor. Hunter x Hunter was produced by Nippon animation
in 1999 and whilst its quality often overshadows many of the other shonen series of its time, it has struggled to keep the same legacy as series such as Naruto or One Piece. Both of which were mad…

The manga and this adaptation of Hunter x Hunter means a lot to me, really so there may be some bias here. It follows the story of Gon Freecss, a boy who aspires to become a hunter to meet his father Ging. This anime has beautiful storytelling and shot composure, OST, voice acting etc. It's everything you'd like about a show. It becomes a 10/10 at the Yorkshin City arc/Genei Ryodan which I thinks completely outshines the reboot in that aspect. If you want to get into this version there is a TV anime and three OVA's so enjoy! This is not your average shounen manga btw it feels like it bends the archeotypes of your average shounen (I still love stuff like Naruto and Dragon Ball don't get me wrong.

This is a Shōnen about adventure, contradiction, learning, fighting, laughter and friendship.
It is not a typical Shōnen, because here we can question the actions of the character without an explanation if he is right or not. We follow a team of four young people learning how a magical world works but very similar to our world.
This is not a Shōnen for those under 13 years old, yes, it can be naive and purely funny, but the learnings and reflection that the narrative offers, it is the most impressive legacy.
I only recommend the versions dubbed in Spanish (Latin America), Italian, Arabic ignoring many others, the English dubbing changes as usual many terms and characterization of many characters.
This is a must-see anime for anyone who feels this is an art.

What an amazing series this was. Just as good as the newer version of Hunter x Hunter even though it has some similiar elements and subtle differences.
The sounds of this anime was amazing it had this dark and light hearted vibe to it if you get what I mean. The music really reminds of FMA and so if you liked the music in FMA then you will most certainly like it for this anime. The visuals weren't bad or good either. It didn't have that crisp sharp look to it and most of the fight scenes were not comparable to that of the 2011 version.
The story was really amazing I enjoyed it alot. It had the perfect pacing and good consistency mixed in with a great buildup of plot. Also they didn't feel us with too much dialogue or monoluging. Though the ending was kind of bittersweet for me since the…

After writing one of thee classics piece of work Yu Yu Hakusho, it's clear Yoshihiro Togashi wanted to try something new in the genre he wrote in. Many people argue that Hunter is the definitive shonen must watch even for people who usually wouldn't enjoy it. They are not wrong, although at first glance it might look like a typicall weekly plot filled shonen, the story develops into something much bigger than Togashi himself imagined. It's typical for shounen animes to not have a clear ending or even and end to begin with, the stories are usually made with the feeling that the main character always has nothing to loose; Hunter isn't different in that way but that is not why it is so successfull. The success dosn't come from being 'different' than shounen tropes, rather it comes from master…

This review contains light spoilers.
This review is written from the perspective of someone who first experienced Hunter X Hunter through this series. I had read some of the early chapters of the manga beforehand but I went into this series almost completely blind. And even after watching the 2011 anime, I still think that this series is worth watching for any Hunter X Hunter fan.
Story (8/10)
The series obviously has the same general premise as the manga and 2011 anime, although it's set up in a different way. The 1999 anime follows the manga and introduces a certain character during a flashback in the first episode (although the series doesn't get far enough to show this character's second appearance, making the decision not really pay off in the end). The 2011 anime ommitted this char…

I cannot recommend this anime for anything but comparison since the 2011 anime came out. While there may be a bias on my part having seen the 2011 adaptation first, if I had seen this version first I likely would have never stuck with the series to become a part of the fandom.
There are a couple of things this series has over the later adaptation: the first episode actually introduces a certain character, even though it never makes it to the famously large arc for that decision to pay off. 1999 also has the original take on Phase 2 of the Hunter's Exam, changed in that I suppose the mangaka now realizes that foreigners know what sushi is, therefore a plot point is rendered a little ridiculous but the examiner's motivations and testing material remain in a consistent thread of logic.
Howe…
