Man, that was awesome. For whatever reason, my mindset when I went into this film was reviewing it as an album since it's a visual companion to Daft Punk's 2001 album Discovery. I'll first review it as an album since I never really review music like I do films or sometimes games. Discovery is an amazing album with banger after banger hits that are catchy as all hell. It's an album that I'll definitely have to relisten to because some of those tracks are stuck in my head now. Now, let's talk about the actual film. It's a beautifully animated film that impressively tells a pretty cool story without a single line of dialogue. The animation itself is just stunning at times, although the CGI in certain shots do feel a bit dated. The use of color is really nice looking and it pops out like…

I'm writing this as a mega Daft Punk so here's my 2 cents: You come for the art style and stay for the music. I won't sugar coat it- it's not the best movie of all time. I know, I know, heresy coming from a fan like me. However, Thomas and Guy-Man were not setting out to make the next Casablanca. They had a simple story to tell and an absolute banger of an album that was already the blueprint for it. it's a simple story about an alien band who gets kidnapped and gets sent to earth to be part of a collection of superstars, who are also kidnapped aliens, for the mustache twirling record company bad guys. Shep, some space simp, goes after to save the Crescendolls and his beloved 90's sci-fi anime version of a discord kitten. While the characters are memorable and certainly a staple in Da…

Haven’t seen this in so long but holy shit how did they fucking do it? Other animes can give you 20 episodes detailing every single detail of a character origin and I still wouldn’t give a fuck. A movie with 0 fucking dialogue made me care for these characters more than most anime are capable of. Also the great Leiji Matsumoto (rest in peace) character designs are once again brilliant. He’s one of my fav manga authors ever, he has a genius brain and a creative vision modern manga authors can’t emulate. The animation was amazing from beginning to end (Toei Animation won’t ever be this good again) and of course the music was top notch. TLDR: you get a free cool anime with your Daft Punk Album.

As someone who's grown to regard visual albums as some of the greatest pieces of media film has to offer, I'd place Daft Punk's Interstella 5555 at the top of any I've ever seen, and by far in the threshold as one of my favourite movies of all time. What is there to say about Daft Punk's 2001 masterpiece of an album 'Discovery' that hasn't been said before, an album which will go down in history as one of if not the best electro dance albums of all time. Music has never serrinated with me more than the works of Bangalter and Homen-Christo, Discovery is a Journey of The Soul to find love and meaning in an endless world of mayhem, that has to many incredible reasons to listen to over and over again. An album which jumps between moods, tones and atmospheres to create one of the most flawless…

Short review, there isn't really much to talk about tbh STORY - 3: I literally had 0 investment in the story, granted it's hard to when daft punk is playing so my focus is on them ART - 5: Not really an artstyle I love but I don't have any problems with it either tbh, more or less just indifferent to it. CHARACTER - 2: Genuinely don't remember anything about any characters except for the fact they were blue, one guy died and there was an evil manager, all character felt quite blank to me, the characters only existed for the sake of giving is something to look at, not to make is feel invested in their personalities. ENJOYMENT - 8: Enjoyment is a lot higher than other aspects for one reason I'll get into in a minute. Not much to say here as I'll explain why I enjoyed it so much in the ne…

Discovery is a masterpiece, but I feel like this kind of misunderstands the appeal of Daft Punk and their music which was that the world was futuristic and cool but you were still just a normal guy doing boring things, so it would have been cool if space fanboy got more focus. I also feel like the movie comes more from a love for the individual songs and an overriding commitment to perfectly emulating whatever aesthetic the album was going for, which makes for a really unfocused and weird film. It’s not bad, though! HBFS and Something About Us were highlights, though they tried to make Veridis Quo into Castlevania for some reason. I think the gothic stuff was where they lost me.

To make a long story short i really loved how the story is told through the music of Daft Punk Aliens who are musicians who get kidnapped and made into human musicians and in my opinion the Discovery album was the best Daft Punk album and this movie shows that. I Had to watch this movie all over again after the recent news that after 28 years Daft Punk will be breaking up. And this movie is just as good as i remember so and i love how there is no dialogue no voice acting but it was still phenomenal. Thank you for all the great memories Daft Punk 1993-2021

Long story short this is the adventures of some weird alien band abducted and taken to earth to be turned into the next big thing by a bad guy with visuals very reminiscent of 70's anime ala Cyborg 009 or Astro Boy everybody is unique in their design and stand out very well to create something that has stood almost 20 years to be a very distinct piece of art to accompany what I truly whole heartedly believe to be the single greatest album of the 00's no question's to be asked this movie isn't really as much a traditional anime but rather a visualizer by one of the premier musical acts to ever of graced gods green earth and literally the only reason I personally can't give this highly influential and important album of my life a 10 is because the story is a bit on the random side and the wh…

Narrative: 8/10 This is not simply a collection of music videos to go along with an album; this is an entire full length story complete with action, drama, love, and a thoroughgoing ending. It’s not the craziest story ever, nothing more ambitious than your standard action movie, and It’s simple enough that you can easily follow along even with the complete lack of dialogue in the film. It has very solid pacing, especially since there was the additional task of syncing up the actions of the film with the songs being played. I was half expecting to fall asleep during the film before I decided to watch it. But fortunately the story was more than engaging enough to keep me focused throughout the entire film. Characters: 7.25/10 This is not a character driven story, and since there’s not a sp…

Please don't read Only our most distant descendants will be able to decide whether we should be praised or reproached for first working out our favourite amv before working out our revolution. -Brigitte Auber, probably In the fading, blinding light of the first days of 2001, a very important question was set. to the people of France, Japan and beyond. What if Françoise Sagan loved 'Le lundi commence le samedi' and Toei did an anime adaption of the hit novel she wrote as a tribute? Unfortunately, this is not what's answered when you see this Leiji Matsumoto collaboration with Daft Punk, maybe it's not even close but still it's a rather seminal work and music videos of tracks from Discovery pretty much swallowed MTV Airtime in the turn of the millennium, at least in Europe, making Daft Pu…

Reviewing a work of art right after experiencing it spells trouble, but here it's nothing much. I have to say that if you're a fan of music over video, you'll feel right at home. For everyone else, and especially the ones who want to enjoy something beyond a musical score, eh, maybe not the right place. It's no The Wall or maybe other comparable works that I haven't seen. The music itself is only delivering the feeling here. The intro (One More Time) and Something About Us truly stand out. The first is, well, just a really happy celebration of alien people who have nothing to worry about, for a moment; well drawn and with color bursting across the screen. The other comes a bit later and finally makes you feel like batting an eye when something happens in the narrative. Yes, the narrative…

This is the type of movie that people grow up with as kids and get serious nostalgia anytime they listen to the songs from Daft Punk's Discovery album. I sadly never saw this as a kid and actually wasn't a fan of Daft Punk until after I graduated high school. So any feelings of nostalgia upon my first time watching this movie were nonexistent. However, I still had this sense of wonder as I watched this movie as to how this came to be in the first place. There are so few movies made dedicated to albums made by musicians. Movies like Tommy, Pink Floyd's The Wall, and Jesus Christ Superstar are the main ones I can think of. And when doing a Google Search, Wikipedia as of this review says that there are only 14 movies of this type in existence! But not only is the fact that Daft Punk's Discov…

Interstella5555 is one of the best examples of the phrase, “Show, don’t tell in a world where 99% of shows will at least have a single line of dialogue, utilizing music and animation to tell the entirety of its story. Interstella5555 is the visual realization of "Discovery", an album by Daft Punk and even if you don’t know this artist, I think the show itself is still good as a stand-alone piece of work. Things I enjoyed: I think some of the best parts of Interstella5555 that even though it was made in the year 2003, it manages to replicate the iconic 1980s looks and it’s just a real treat to look at. The story is linear and simple to follow, albeit you’re not multi-tasking while watching it and is basically a take on the harsh life of musicians but in a more absurd manner, following alie…

This is an hour long music video. If you aren't into no dialogue or electronic music, you will probably not enjoy this movie. If you are interested in house/electronic music however, especially of the Daft Punk variety, this is the film for you. The entire Daft Punk album, Discovery, is the audio for the film. So obviously, one of the best house albums ever made as the soundtrack makes the music 10/10. (Thankfully, because the music is what makes the film.) If you've read the synopsis, you already know the story. It's simple, but effective. Simple enough to be told with no dialogue. No sub or dub arguments here guys, just sit back and enjoy the tunes. We sympathize with the likable main characters, and want them to make it back home, but they lack true depth since the lack of dialogue an…

I recently decided to watch this entire movie after watching Daft Punk’s “One More Time” music video that features a clip from this movie. I was curious to see how the rest of the movie was and I was expecting average to mediocre but this movie blew me away with how good it was. For what’s basically an extended music video of a Daft Punk album, this movie somehow manages to be insanely good with it’s extremely colorful and charming art, as well as its stellar soundtrack that manages to tell a beautiful story combined with the movie’s visuals. Story 8/10 The story is pretty basic. If you’ve read the synopsis you’ve basically got it covered. Aliens get kidnapped by evil producer who forces them to make music. Meanwhile another alien tries to rescue them. The plot is simple, but that is ok…

This anime is pretty meh. The story is told with no dialogue or sound other than the overlay of Daft Punk’s “Discovery” album. It is an extremely simple story, which made it hard to be invested in at all. There is, however, one tragedy in the story that I was not expecting. It was effective in making me feel at least somewhat connected to the characters. It is an hour long romp that was overall inoffensive, but hardly engaging. The art is standard fare and nothing special. It is vibrant enough to be a fun watch but it is otherwise not notable. The character designs were pretty appealing, though, and made me wish that the Crescendolls (the band of characters in the anime) were a real band because of how cool they were. Obviously, the driving force is Daft Punk’s music. If you’re a fan of…

Back in the "good old days", when MTV was actually Music Television and not a channel for "Reality TV", Kazaa and Napster made piracy popular, and you had to go out of your way to record your favorite music off the radio just so you could have a tape of your favorite music in one place, music videos were awesome. And they were so huge that they would draw in huge ratings to channels with music programming, and studios would sell music videos on VHS so people could have them along with their vinyl, cassettes, and/or CD collection Studios would invest a ton of money into them because they doubled as promotional material for the band, and as a result, you would get music videos that were essentially awesome short films with an awesome song attached, such as Michael Jackon's Thriller, A-ha's…

holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have no words to describe my feelings but i have never expected this anime/movie/1h-music video to be THIS good!! absolute masterpiece!!! daft punks music is just legendary and the story was so original, my emotions were changing every 10 minutes from goosebumps to almost crying to laughing to dancing. you didn't even need dialogues to understand the story, the visuals were so intense and the music underlined every second of the movie. watch this, people!!! i wish more artists would use anime art, especially in this kind of way, for their music visuals. so apparently i have to write a longer review, so my favorite song from this whole masterpiece was "something about us"

Let me start off by saying: the ONLY thing I don't like about this is how the (only) female character is portrayed. She is, throughout the entire story, just a damsel in distress. And that trope pisses me off. But when I could look past that, I really enjoyed Interstella. Discovery is my favorite Daft Punk album and I grew up watching the One More Time clip all the time in numerous music channels (mostly MTV). So, I was pretty sure I'd like this movie. What I didn't expect is that it would have ACTUALLY GOOD PLOT!!! There's drama, romance, mystery/thriller, sci-fi (I mean, obviously, they're aliens... but still). PLOT TWISTS!!!! I swear, every time I thought "well, there's nothing else that could happen" SOMETHING ELSE happens and I'm left awed again. So really, my only complaint is a…

Right off the bat, this can automatically be in the running for best anime film of all time simply because its soundtrack is one of the best albums of all time. But it's the combination of Daft Punk's semi-ironic/completely-sincere disco house and Leiji Matsumoto's 70's style character design that makes this so stunning. It's a match made in heaven. The story features an alien disco band who get abducted by the earth's record industry, get's "human-washed" and has their song "One More Time" commodified into a hit single. The story is carried by the expressiveness of Matsumoto's design and the mood of the music, which is blended into each scene perfectly. I was fascinated at how on-beat the cuts are, which makes the entire film have a distinct rhythm. The BPM literally matches the intensit…
