Maken-Ki is a very fanservice heavy show. Don’t go in thinking you’re going to get anything of substance here. It’s big boobs, panties, and butt shots all the way through.
Now yes, there is a “plot”, but it might as well not exist. It’s nothing interesting, and the writers may have been better off cutting it completely because it doesn’t really go anywhere, and it just takes the focus off the fanservice and the girls, both of which carry this show to the end.

This anime was both good and not so great. I enjoyed the first season thinking it would lead to some sort of continuation and eventual completion of the character arc.
However so such thing happened, I was able to tolerate to control bumbling and goofiness of the mc because he showed the potential to grow and mature to something better especially as his powers grew. But they completely abandoned the story line in the 2nd season and it seemed as though a bunch of random people all got their chance to create an episode.
It was so much more they could have done with this. I'm just tired of weak mc that have no balls or show ball but never use them.

Yeah...this is, um, an anime for sure. I'll start off by saying that I don't think the story of this is all that bad, I just don't think it's conveyed all that well here in the adaptation. Recommendation: Not even worth it for the fanservice.
Maken-ki is deeply experimental at its core. The experiment being performed is whether an anime that consists entirely of the most well-worn harem cliches in the industry can somehow be far more loathsome than the sum of its parts, and in that way, and only that way, Maken-ki is a success.
This is a show without a single redeeming quality. The worst part, as it so often is with these kinds of shows, is the main character. Yeah this show fucking sucks. I can tolerate egregious fan service but this takes it to the next level like really abuses it. Straight Chris Brown's character development and story for the sake of pantie shots and fan service to the point it feels like an acid trip through a lingerie factory.
I almost called this a generic high school action harem show, when in reality its a pantie show with high school action and harem elements with added sexism undertones.
Overall this is pure trash, a solid waste of 4 hours. Please don't watch this if you value your time

If what you are looking for is a brainless fan service anime, this is it.
The animation was great with drop dead gorgeous girls and superb panty shots, you will find yourself thanking god for the marvellous creation of women on earth. It's a shame the same studio didn't make the second season, lack of panty shots and and change in art denotes this pretty easily; nevertheless the second season had plenty of suggestive scenes that are worthy of a Maken-Ki! series.
I really enjoyed the show and the "Academy Harem" episode was a master piece. I wish we could see a third season, perhaps this time with the continuation of the manga.

tl;dr: Some semblance of a decent story that isn't told well in the slightest, and though the less serious comedy and amusement focused portions bring it up they aren't enough to completely salvage it.
I am not opposed to what this anime was trying to do in any regard, but I don’t think it managed to do a good job in most things. The relationships are a mess and somewhat undefined which makes the harem aspect really weak. Characterization or character development beyond that isn’t particularly notable either. Is it possible to have too much fan service in an anime? Yes there is, and the answer is Maken-Ki. The genres of the anime include action, martial arts, and super power. You can pretty much forget about those. This is an ecchi anime on steroids. You will constantly see close ups of huge bouncing breasts, panty shots, naked breasts and butts, and girls fondling each other. It became a bit too much for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against fan service, but I prefer it in smaller and less frequent doses. Less “in your face” style. If you love ecchi and only ecchi, this might be a show for you. In my opinion there are two expectations that an individual can have before watching this anime and which you fall under heavily affects your enjoyment going in.
1. You expect a shounen or action focused anime with fan-service or ecchi elements.
2. You expect ecchi and fan-service focused anime with shounen and action elements.
The first group is probably going to have a hard time enjoying Maken-ki due to the emphasis on the ecchi mediocre plot, characters, and action.
The second group is more likely to enjoy it but there are still aspects that can be found wanting.
If you are interested in Maken-ki I heavily recommend that you keep your expectations low for engaging story and focus your attention on the art, character designs, and ecchi as they are by far the high point of the show. Perso…

i feel this anime is searching for an identity as if it doesn't know which genre it wants to be a rom com or an action romance anime. through the anime at the beginning it had a story about why one girl was after the main character because he had the same abilities as her brother but it was never touched on or brought up again. then a villain group who are trying to require the powerful maken-ki for there evil deeds but it was not touched apon till the end of the anime. the rest was your typical ecchi high school anime. so if you are into so good ole fan service which who doesn't like some fan service but if you are looking for a story or good characters highly doubt you will find it here

As this show is about 7 years old, I apologise for reviewing such an old anime series. It had potential to be an enjoying and action pack plot.

Are unnecessary panty shots truly unnecessary? I don't think so, as long as it's done properly. Though I'm not entirely sure which side of the fence this one lands on.. It does seem to get better the further you get in.
If you enjoy the Ecchi but also pay attention to the story, you should be able to enjoy what it has to offer.
Schools with special weapons and abilities are pretty common, it has fighting, comedy and obviously fan service.
It doesn't feel like it's supposed to be taken really seriously, and if you don't, then you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is, just a usual fan service, comedy and action mash up.

See before watching MakenKi one must ask his or herself “am I a pervert?” if you are and you’re not ashamed to admit it MakenKi is the show for you. MakenKi is one with Ikki Tousen and Sekrei and if you’ve seen those shows you know what to expect from here. You get plenty of panty shots plus all the bewbie jiggle you can handle but frankly that’s all you’re going to get out of this show.

Do not watch this if you want your mind blown by quality story line, suspense, plot, plot development, character development, etc. There is one type of development however, and that development was the boobs. I think a couple characters gained a bra size or 2 and the MC might have gotten a concussion from constant smack down he gets from the women. At the first I've found this anime nice. Until I've read the manga.
And in that moment I've changed my opinion.
The first episodes of this first season follow the story, but when you go on the plot is left for fanservice! The critic is generally bad but for me is excessive, it's true that isn't a serious anime, but for relaxing is nice.
It's a really pity that leave the plot for fanservice, the story of the caracters (well described in the manga) here is just mentioned! and leave you to wait for something that will not happens (I repeat that in the manga is different).
