Crazy Fun Mecha Yuri That Gets a Little Repetitive:
The Witch from Mercury is a wild journey with a protagonist who is an incredibly charming clumsy country bumpkin navigating a strict political mecha school. The events that develop from this are just downright wild with multiple characters “kind of” flirting, proposing, or being arranged to be with the main character who is just trying to live out her school days but is incapable of not stumbling into controversy after controversy with her precious Gundam. This makes the plot really fun because the main character is always at odds with some aspect of the world, she is navigating allowing for the developments of the narrative to feel very natural and engaging.
However, the story suffers from two major issues that can make the plot hard t…

Gundam’s multiple timelines and universes are a major draw for fans, and it’s no surprise that shows like G Witch fail to capture the essence of what makes Gundam one of the biggest franchises of all time. For me, G Witch is one of the weakest Gundam series, and a disappointing modern iteration for two simple reasons: 1: Overreliance on clichés like "cute girls." 2: Forced yuri. In all seriousness, it’s frustrating to see two female leads reduced to predictable tropes with little depth. Suletta’s social anxiety feels exaggerated and unconvincing, making it hard to root for her. Miorine’s abrasive personality comes off as one-dimensional, lacking the nuance needed to make her insecurities relatable. The leads feel like archetypes rather than real, complex characters, which is a letdown in a…

This is the first gundam season I have fully finished -- not started mind you -- and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. The relationship between Miorine and Suletta is the core focus of this season, and it delivers in developing both characters, giving entertaining and cute moments between them, and setting up both mysteries and questions for the audience to ponder for future episodes.
And of course, it's Yuri.
If you're interested in an energetic / subdued duo that gets subverted when it meets usual Gundam style conventions, then this may be your thing. I have heard criticism from other gundam fans that since this season focuses more on the school life of the characters, it doesn't feel "gundam" enough but personally I did not find it to be an issue.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and…

It's a show made to appeal to a new generation of anime fans who love awkward characters and slice of life melodramas. The result is a mix of things that have been done better elsewhere. Slice of life has been done better elsewhere, high school battle tournaments have been done better elsewhere, mecha has been done much better else, corporate thrillers have been done better elsewhere, etc. I did not enjoy it, but I'm not the intended audience.
I found the main character, Suletta, unrealistically awkward. She, without fail, flubs the easiest of social situations. She's a character archetype that appears in hundreds of anime. Plenty of people like that type of character, if you do, you'll probably enjoy this show.
I thought the Gundam parts of the show felt tacked on. They found a slice o…

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Review: A Missed Opportunity for Classic Gundam Depth
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury promised a fresh take on the storied Gundam franchise, introducing a female protagonist, Suletta Mercury, and a new setting in the Ad Stella timeline. While the series delivers stunning mecha battles and visual spectacle, it falters in capturing the political and moral complexity that defines classic Gundam narratives, prioritizing flashy action over the franchise’s hallmark themes of war and politics.
A Departure from Gundam’s Core Themes
The Gundam franchise has long been celebrated for its nuanced exploration of war’s consequences, political machinations, and the human cost of conflict. Series like Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), Zeta Gundam, and Wing…

These mech anime are doing a whole ouroboros thing with Gundam inspiring Evangelion, which in turn inspired a lot of modern Gundam, and now the studio that made Evangelion is producing the next Gundam. This one throws in some Shōjo Kakumei Utena betrothal yuri and a bit of Ghost in the Shell biotech; a strong stew of influences. Unlike those anime, however, this is a mostly lighthearted story that doesn't dwell on the darker implications of sci-fi weapons trading and space politics. That's all still in there but the show would rather spend time with it's young and temperamental cast.
The character designs have a fun streetwear inspired look with a bubbly "moe" style that highlights the characters' youth and exuberance. The colours that the characters bring to the monochromatic space setti…

This was pitched to me as a romantic comedy about space lesbians. Unfortunately there is not much in the way of romance, comedy, or queerness, leaving only the "space" bit which is pretty uncompelling on it's own.
From reading other reviews of this show on here, I discovered Utena, which on one hand made watching Mercury worth it just to discover this gem. On the other hand, I now understand what a blatant and uncreative ripoff of Utena this show is, but executed so much worse.
Ultimately, Witch from Mercury tries to split the difference between being a Gundam show and literally Utena, and ends up doing both poorly.

The Witch from Mercury certainly isn't the best anime I've ever seen, but it does a good job at setting up it's second season, and it's beautiful Gundam animations are something to behold. It may end in a way some may find underwhelming, but it assures a second season, which I think heavily entices you to continue watching. I know I'm going to! I think the sacrifices this season makes for setting up season 2 makes this one struggle to reach peak Gundam. It's no Iron-Blooded Orphans, but it's got similar charm.
The animation doesn't really shine until the fights happen. I also don't love that it never really feels like Suletta seriously struggles in this 12 episode journey, but we will see what happens in the second season.
If you're a Gundam fan, this one is a definite watch. If you want…

Reviewing as someone who has never watched mecha animes before, let alone the Gundam universe:
[Unique, complex, yet fathomable storyline and world-building, characters with all unique personalities and backgrounds which are dived into, and main characters full of 'girlbosses' - inspirational yet humane. All comes together with top notch production and quality as an anime in general (again, not comparing with other mecha animes because I have not watched any other) with fantastic music, sfx, and vfx. 9/10]
As a fantasy genre enjoyer, all I can say is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury's world is totally unique and original, yet so complex which is why from its world-building alone, it deserves to be watched by whoever you are. Such well written lore not only for the world and sett…

To preference this review, I have never consumed both an anime or manga Gundam related work. So, like many, this is my first of the series. I do build Gunpla, but my understanding of the Gundam world is none before watching this. With that being said, this review is looking at this show alone, not comparing it to any of the other shows. To be honest, doing such just comes off as a copium moment for modern iterations of old franchises.
Art 9/10
Overall, I loved the art style. While it isn't the most unique out there, it was fluid and was not overbearing. Often times I see certain studios that go all out on with detail and it becomes distracting or downright just washed out looking after you see this too many times. Not here, it was consistent across every episode. I hardly seen many "erro…

"Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury" kicks off with Episode 0, setting the stage for what promises to be a unique addition to the Gundam franchise. This initial installment delivers a dramatic and emotional narrative that captivates viewers from the start. The storytelling is rich, delving into the characters' backgrounds and establishing a solid foundation for the events to unfold in Season 1.
Season 1 takes an interesting turn by incorporating elements of yuri and high school drama, a departure from the typical Gundam formula. The exploration of these themes, coupled with a backdrop of space racism, adds layers of complexity to the narrative. While this shift might not resonate with all Gundam enthusiasts, it brings a fresh perspective to the series, making it stand out in the c…

In my 1st anime review here, I wanted to say why this is one of my favorite anime. Specifically, I really like how this combines beautiful and emotional characters, which are at times childish and cheesy but in a well-written way, with an important political message. I think most people leaving a bad or mixed review expect a political chess game between characters seeking power, with an intriguing plot, suspenseful battles and realistic politics. While the plot isn't as dense and complex as other Gundam, I think this is much more meaningful politically and has deeper, more interesting characters.
Suletta is sometimes blamed for stuttering, for being apologetic and breaking down emotionally due to thinking it's her fault for everything, for often behaving in a very awkward, childish way. B…

Do make sure to start with the prologue.
Wow. Suisei no Majo, Witch of Mercury really blew me away. The 2020's are only beginning and still, they seem to be awash with amazing advances in anime. Animation and sound are all extremely on point.
What I really enjoy about GWM is just how character driven it is. While that's in mny ways true of all Gundam series, in this case, it's not just one characters philosophical ideas being put to the test, but their emotions reach new depths in GWM. Animation of emotions and subtleties betwixt characters is extraordinary. I have to say, this carries the torch in many ways where Evangelion took off. Pilots being real people.
As for the plot, it's Gundam - it's filled with politics. This time around it's corporate politics, and framed between severa…

In order to talk about Season 1 of Witch from Mercury, we have to get Season 2 involved. That’s because Season 1 actually didn’t grab me and had me wondering where Witch from Mercury’s great reputation came from. However, after watching Season 2, I realized that pretty much all of the things in Season 1 that I didn’t entirely care about or didn’t like actually had good payoff by the end. Not only that, but even if Season 1 remained “just okay,” Season 2 was so intense that I think it’d be worth going for anyways.
I want to emphasize that Season 1 doesn’t actually do anything wrong. I didn’t find anything outright boring or annoying. But for the most part, the overall events of it can be summed up by a nervous girl (Suletta) going to Mech School and using her overpowered mech to win high-…

Gundam has never been high on my priority list when it comes to anime. To date, I've only seen Gundam X, War In The Pocket, and both seasons of 00 (Excluding the movie), though as of today, I'm adding Gundam: The Witch From Mercury to this list. The reason I haven't watched many Gundam shows is that...well, I have a hard time keeping up with and comprehending hard sci-fi stuff and the technobabble they try to throw at you. Because of this, I originally had no interest in G-Witch at all, even when it was first announced. But then I heard my online circles talking about it and praising it up the wazoo...and hearing the news that it apparently became so popular that accompanying merchandise outsold pretty much every other Gundam property EVER. The fir…

yuri continues to outdo yaoi both narratively and literally.
mobile suit gundam: the witch from mercury is a show that has a ton of depth and realism to it. many character motivations and personalities are at play here, and the reason for this is to convey that the universe the show is set in is, much like our own, made up of people both good and bad. humanity, birth, life and death are struggling factors at odds with one another here in a conflict that takes center stage in a conflict which feels very real and grounded. this is only helped by the world containing details that just fit perfectly in a depiction of the modern world spread out through space. 'zaku' (using this term very lightly) being used to patrol settlements in space and the deployment of smaller mobile suits on the grou…

Hello.
As a first time watcher of a Gundam anime after seeing incredible art of the two MCs and their ship, I have to admit that I am in love. I've watched countless animes, thinking that I'm just a generic trash isekai consumer, but... this anime has turned my vision upside down. From the prologue episode of season 1 to the cliffhanger on episode 12. The character and relationship developments, the plot twists and fight scenes. The animation is beautiful and I can't help myself but to blast the audio on my speakers even in the early morning. A favorite SFX of mine is Aerial's shield in the first few episodes where it's most prominent and loudest.
Let me get into the Openings and Endings. The song choice for the opening of season 1 - "Shukufuku" - represents the promise and the vow Mior…

I've held a semi-deep interest in space, science fiction, robots, and mecha for many years, but have never quite dived into any mecha titles. With how popular this title has been lately, I figured I might as well give it a chance. Words alone can hardly describe the 'everything' of things this show gave me, whereas I expected - or rather, merely hoped, I would get a few cool robot battles out of it. I humbly and happily admit I was proved wrong, and all my initial thoughts about what this show might be like had quickly been pummeled into the ground.
The wonderful thing that makes the Witch of Mercury feel so special to me - as an anime - is that it doesn't behave like one all the time but so clearly is one, wants to be one and embraces being one. It set up plethora of characters and trope…

Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo is a promising first step for the series. While the season starts off slow with a focus on character and story development, it eventually builds up to an exciting climax. The narrative is well-crafted, but unfortunately, the ending leaves the audience hanging without a satisfying conclusion. The characters are unique and compelling, each with their own motivations. However, the implementation of CG is subpar, especially in the earlier episodes, and too much screen time is given to side characters who don't add much to the plot (at least in this season). Overall, Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo is a decent entry, but it can't stand up on its own. It will require competent further seasons to truly shine and become something special.

Abandonment, discrimination, war, pain, unfulfilled belonging and most of all bittersweet personal relationships. All the main components of a good Gundam show can be found in this installment that makes an excellent entry point for newcomers to the Gundam franchise.
The atmosphere in Witch from Mercury is delicate and rough at times. The air gets warm and comes towards you for an embrace, only to violently become cutthroat in just a few seconds (just like the main character's mother). The juxtaposition of these feelings takes the main stage and the team behind the anime makes great efforts to keep you on the edge at all times. Initially, the viewer might be fooled by the pastel colour palette and the ordinary setting of another highschool mecha anime but this anime is far more than this.…
