Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Introduction

Following NERV's failed attempt to retrieve the Spears of Longinus and carry out the Human Instrumentality Project, the destruction caused by the Fourth Impact has been largely averted. In a state of disarray, Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley Shikinami, and Rei Ayanami travel to Village 3—a survivor settlement free from Earth's ruination. There, Shinji slowly comes to terms with his past, developing an entirely different life from his days as an Evangelion pilot. Meanwhile, NERV makes preparations to continue the Instrumentality Project by means of a new Impact. When WILLE's main aerial battleship arrives at the village, Shinji decides to board, believing that he can help by piloting an Evangelion. As new secrets are uncovered and a battle between WILLE and NERV approaches, the future of Earth hangs in the balance. Can Shinji save humanity and the rest of the world one last time? This is a brilliant closing masterpiece as well as a tangible form of Hideaki Anno's emotional closure for himself and his fans. After decades trapped in a cycle of escapism, trauma, and the deconstruction of the mecha genre, this fourth film truly shatters the story's "loop" concept that had long confined its characters. The movie is too long, forcing it into a movie format—no wonder some people fell asleep in the theater while watching this. Compared to the original version, this time it doesn't add meaningless symbolism or references—where even the director Hideaki Anno himself was confused by his own references. And sadly Some crucial scenes were poorly animated, whether due to a dwindling budget or lazy animators. But things like this shouldn't be tolerated; it's truly disgraceful.

More than a story, I always felt that Evangelion was something else. It is Anno's raw, unfiltered and perpetually honest self-study: the emotional and profound psychoanalysis of his evolution as an artist and a human being. What starts as a chaotic outlet for his depression, isolation, and identity struggles turns decades later into a mature deep dive around his healing journey and a re-examination of his own traumas and troubled life. It is precisely Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time which serves as the perfect culmination to a 25-year voyage of despair, self-acceptance and eventual catharsis. The movie is a tale of two halves that work seamlessly together. The first one is a grounded and subtle response to the original themes and ideas of the 1995 TV show. Life is sad and arduous.…

This absolutely blew me away. Two and a half hours of a familiar story moving in a completely different direction I felt like it needed desperately; it was like a far more mature, experienced Anno than the one who conceived NGE was reaching out through the screen and beaming his vision directly into my psyche. It's one of the most beautifully animated movies I've ever seen, but beyond that, the metatextual conversation it has with the viewer (and with all the Evangelion that came before) has artistry in such spades that I can't really capture what I mean without laying out what Neon Genesis Evangelion is about and what it (originally) had to say. That would be unnecessary, but the whole time I was watching these rebuilds I was wondering what I would think of them if I hadn't seen the origi…

This film is a sensory work of art. Its visual and sound design are an absolute delight — at least to my personal taste, aside from the strange yet undeniably bold and experimental CGI in the final section. Evangelion is perhaps the most important animated work in history, and this “Rebuild,” against all odds, manages to do it justice. It preserves the wonderful atmosphere Evangelion is known for, along with its deep, broken, and imperfect characters and its tremendous unique style. One criticism could be the lack of surprise in the script. After all, it is a rebuild of the original work, and because of that there are story resolutions that may change a little, yes, but in the end it still cannot avoid repeating them. Another personal criticism would be the character of Mari. I feel sh…

The Definitive Conclusion of a Journey: Shin Evangelion and the Weight of a Legacy Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time represents much more than just the final chapter of the Rebuild films; it's a carefully constructed farewell to one of the most remarkable franchises in Japanese animation. Unlike the more raw and disturbing impact of The End of Evangelion, this film offers a conclusion that seeks not only to finish the narrative but also to offer a sense of evolution and, in a way, reconciliation. The story maintains several familiar foundations from the original work but expands and reorganizes elements to deliver something new. It's not just about repeating Evangelion with better graphics; the film introduces significant changes, such as new characters, new dynamics, and, most impo…

I have a lots of things to think of about the meaning of these Rebuilt film series, I felt like Mari and the 20 other characters who are introduced were going to be more in-depth, similar to How Asuka was introduced as a generic character, but then had a deeper story halfway through the original series. Mari on the other hand starts out generic, ends up in a relationship with shinji still feeling like a bit of a hollow character, while im totally okay with that ending, as shinji and more symbolically evangelion's creator Hideaki Anno wants to move on from Evangelion as a whole. As you know, this movie has alternate ending to End of Evangelion movie, i feel like both endings are fine, while i do prefer this ending in the rebuild, one is not better than the other. Another thing is that the o…

You really need to read this review carefully. Because you have to watch Evangelion at least once in your lifetime. Preferably when your life is falling apart. 😅 So today I want to talk about an anime that is both old and new—depending on which version you watch. Whether it’s the 90s series or the Rebuild movies, it doesn’t matter. Why do I say you must watch Evangelion? Because honestly… I don’t understand Evangelion. And I have zero intention of digging into its theories, symbolism, religious metaphors, or 40-page fan analysis essays. And don’t worry, my friends. If you don’t understand Evangelion, you are NOT alone. With my monkey brain, I simply cannot comprehend what’s going on either. And you know what? I don’t care. 😁 Who is Rei? Who is Asuka? Is she a clone or not? What’s th…

I'm gonna get a lot of slack for this. But I'll say it anyway. NGE and End of Evangelion were a 10/10. The rebuilds were progressively worse, with 3+1 being intellectually insulting for any lifelong Eva fan with two part-time working brain cells. Somewhere along the way, Anno got rich with the Eva franchise (1995-1997), married a normie woman off the success (2002), and the following eva Rebuilds (2007-2021) were increasingly sanitised as a result. His wife became inserted in the series as Mari, a complete non-character who stole the spotlight from the real characters. Ritsuko, Misato became lobotomised; Kaji was nowhere to be seen. Most of the cast from the original NGE was either entirely removed or turned; not even into two dimensional characters, but maybe one dimensional props.…

Evangelion Neon Genesis. A work I will never forget as long as I live. In the last ten days, or at most if you count 12 days, I watched it. It is one of the most controversial anime in the history of anime and the most famous anime in the twentieth century and until the late nineties. A work that I did not respond to at first or understand well. People saw it from a different perspective and I was closer to that. Here I want to talk about the last movie that was released four years ago and everyone knows the movie (Neon Genesis Evangelion Three at Once 3.0 + 1.0). I want to clarify something that I faced in the story or concepts and secrets and ambiguities that (Hideaki Anno) did not clarify. He clarified it here and I want to thank him for his idea of creating a series of movies that summ…

I've claimed elsewhere that the NGE manga's depiction of the events of EoE is the "easy way out." It really does read like an officially-sanctioned fix fic – Shinji heroically swoops in to save Asuka from being torn apart by the MP-Evas, Ritsuko's last words to Gendo are spoon-fed to the reader, and it's all wrapped up with a nice big retcon where another timeline is created, everything is beautiful, nothing hurts, and Shinji & Asuka are both definitely heterosexual. That's bad. Shin Eva is downright insulting. On my first and only watch of Shin Eva, it was readily apparent to me that Anno’s heart just wasn’t in it any more. There's a million different examples to point to – the physically-locked-at-14 Asuka traipsing around a fully-grown Kensuke in a hoodie and very little else might be…

The simple and pure question about whether you like this or not is: what is Evangelion for you? What does it mean to you? For me the answer is a bit complicated, yet simple. Evangelion is peak of psychology drama, it's something you want to see before you know you need to see it. It's something you will truly enjoy when you'll get the deeper thought of this piece and it will change your mindset forever. It's something you will truly hate, if you see it just a simple chaos of fighting robots and depressed childs. The story, since the first anime series, is stealing things from Book of Genesis, mythology and psychology. And who can literally complain after this? 1/2 of the "fun" with Evangelion is watching this movie, previous movies, original series. 1/2 of the "fun" with Evangelion is to…

My Love Letter to Evangelion: It Begins: I remember it to be rainy night, in 2014. Death Note impressed me immensely but Berserk and Oyasumi PunPun failed to reach my expectations, I found the violence and excess sadness unimportant. That night, I booted up my crusty PC to surf through some anime. One caught my eye. "Neon Genesis Evangelion". I always loved Science Fiction so I checked it out. I was quite... intrigued by the beginning few episodes so I stuck by. And I still dont know if that was a good choice or a bad choice. I probably wont even have made this account if I didnt stuck by Evangelion. Well the ending dissapointed me gravely, so much that I just quite anime for a few weeks. Of course then I started Naruto, AOT was in the shelves as well, I was rewatching it, I watched Monst…

The final Rebuild film ends with a whimper. I felt that all the meta-textual stuff was a bit much and pulled me out of the film. The last 30 min feels like a rush to give development to various characters to provide an emotional and thematic send off. Instead of focusing on being the final film in a series of movies, it decides to focus on it’s place as the finale to a franchise. It lacks cohesion and is only somewhat satisfying in regards to its themes. The CG ranged from good to jarring. On a positive note, “One Last Kiss” is an absolute banger.

There is so much to say but so little time and actually dont want to make an testament of it but instead something kinda brief about my opinion after finishing it. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time serves as the closure for this tetralogy known as "rebuild", now this new interpretation of the original one of 96 has an different and new take on many aspects from the inclusion of a new character, the cutting on the screen-time of most secondary character who had more presence on the original one , a different intention and menssage overall on the story and of course a final that just is night and day in comparision to the movie "Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion" of 97 . Now even with all that said these movies hold out through out all of them the same soul from what did…

gonna be honest - waited a year and a couple of months before finally watching. i did this out of uncertainty for how the series - one that'd already "ended" several times, each time mesmerizing but never conclusive - would once again "end". not being ironic when i say this is the absolute dream conclusion for something that, more than any series ever, desperately needed one. the hopelessness that permeates much of the preexisting media has been consumed and experienced by both fans and casual watchers for decades now, that retreading into yet another apocalyptic finale with nary a glimpse of hope would've been redundant as hell. here, we have every tool in the toolbox working together to craft something strikingly different without losing the core elements that make NGE such a standout s…

The Evangelion rebuild movies are a new take on the Evangelion saga. They are visually impressive in their modern presentation, but the CG-heavy fight scenes in these movies are disappointing. I liked the original NGE series, but I found the "religious techno babble" to be one of the most annoying parts of the show. Despite this, I still enjoyed the original series and EoE because of the characters, animation, fights, music, and psychological introspection. Even though the "religious techno-babble" seemed random and illogical, I eventually convinced myself that it fit in with the show's overarching plot. However, the Rebuild movies take this "nonsense" to new heights and subsequently have illogical plot development and twists. If you were to watch the movies without any knowledge of the…

this is one of the best tv shows i have aver watched and that i will ever watch the artistic talent and creative skill it took to create something so amazing is practically impossible it was a one in a thousand chance that a franchise so constantly good exists. each character is written with a mastery of writing skill making them all entertaining and memorable. the story is the hard sci-fi all anime fans are looking for in the sea of shit that is the seasonal releases now beautifully built and crafted so that nothing is given to you and at the same time everything is given to you which is kept up across 26 episodes 6 films and 14 volumes. When i watched this in cinemas i was the happiest and the saddest I've ever been at one time i can no longer listen to "beautiful world" without crying.…

This movie takes a lot of big swings to wrap up the series, getting really deep into the heads of our characters. Not really sure it does the kind of work that the series did in that regard, but it's more consistent than the series was and there's some really amazing character work being done here. It doesn't all work, particularly for characters that weren't that well developed before arriving to these moments, but it hits more than it misses. The action is spectacular and the visuals better than ever, though... I don't know, there's something that makes it difficult for me to score this higher. Maybe as I let the concepts of this series sink in, I'll come to appreciate it more, but it feels like there are still chunks missing that make it difficult to understand what happened here and wh…

*SPOILER-FREE* And we are back to the psychological thriller that is Evangelion. This is the finale of Evangelion, the second part to Evangelion 3.0: Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. I enjoyed it, and though I won't miss it and the movies were not as good as the original Neon Genesis Evangelion show, I enjoyed the recap and new movies. Although Evangelion 1.0 was entirely a recap and 2.0 was somewhat a recap, 3.0 & 3.0 + 1.0 delve way outside the barrier of Evangelion. It is completely different. The Story: Picks up after Evangelion 3.0, and in this movie, the new agency is trying to prevent the 4th impact. The entire movie is based on that. But between all the battles with Eva's and Ikari, we get episodic recaps and flashbacks. Not to mention an amazing story of the small villa…

If there's just one simple way to describe Evangelion 3.0+1.0, it is that the final movie of the Rebuild tetralogy is one heck of an "optimistic mess". I'll try to give brief thoughts as I go, but I'm sure this will devolve into a jumbled mess as well. The Rebuild tetralogy was billed as a way for newcomers to the Evangelion series to experience what many of us did with the original NGE series and End of Evangelion. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Rebuild series can only be holistically understood with its predecessors. What's even worse is that one particular character introduced in the Rebuild series also took references from the manga adaptation itself. The Rebuild series can only be understood as its title suggests. It is a Rebuild of a new Evangelion timeline that tries…
