M.D. Geist is pure mid-80s OVA meathead sci-fi: big armour, big guns, ruined landscapes and a protagonist whose main personality trait is being extremely good at killing things. The animation is solid, the machinery looks great and the violence has a satisfying nastiness to it. It never goes completely berserk with the gore, but what’s there lands well. The English dub also sounds fantastic on a technical level, with excellent weapon and impact sounds, even if the actual voice acting is fucking dreadful. The story, meanwhile, is a needlessly confusing slab of military sci-fi bollocks populated almost entirely by cardboard. Geist himself is basically a walking murder machine, and everyone around him is even less interesting. Still, there’s some fun to be had in the grimy wasteland atmosp…

Soukihei MD Geist is a strange and uncompromising 1986 OVA steeped in war themes and unafraid of extreme violence. Often overlooked by so-called anime fans who struggle to recognize strong animation even when it’s right in front of them, MD Geist is in fact a showcase of raw technical skill and unapologetic attitude. Directed by Kouichi Oohata, who also handled the mechanical design, storyboards, and the story itself, the OVA clearly reflects its creator’s strengths and limitations. While it is far from being a masterpiece of writing, credit must be given where it’s due. Oohata’s background as a mechanical designer defines the project, as proven by his impressive résumé, which includes Top wo Nerae!, Angel Cop, Seijuuki Cyguard, Genocyber, Tokyo Vice, and many others. As expected, the na…

Ah, MD Geist! Let’s dive into this classic mecha OVA: The Story: In the distant future, humanity has colonized other planets. One of these planets, Jerra, has been ravaged by decades of war. Enter MD Geist, a badass lead who defies the typical wussy-boy anime mold. The story is straightforward, dark, and nihilistic. No need for overcomplexity when you’ve got a powerful protagonist like Geist. 🌌 Animation and Style: MD Geist is a product of its time (the mid-80s), and it wears its retro badge proudly. The animation quality might not blow your mind, but it has a certain charm. Plus, it’s not afraid to get gritty and violent. 💥 So Bad It’s Good?: Some call it “so bad it’s good,” but opinions vary. If you’re into dystopian settings, over-the-top action, and unapologetic manliness, MD Geis…

Listen here y'all, I'm here for a good time, not to understand the plot. And what a good time this is... So Billy idol is some sort of super soldier guy, and he was part of a discontinued program. Now I guess he does like vigilante work and stuff. The main girl honestly I have the exact same haircut I really don't know what to call her. She comes off as an annoying slut at first, but overall is not the most annoying character I've ever encountered. Billy idol puts on some armor that looks like a football uniform, and he's got to fight the other robot guy. The fight ends fairly quickly with Billy idol popping his opponent's head. There's lots of like blood and stuff and then he's got to stop the big bad guy. I do plan on watching the sequel. As for the dub it's pretty bad but that's just…

Pointless. I could end the review there. MD Geist has some extreme, mind-numbing blandness and is a total waste of Hironobu Kageyama's musical talents. MD Geist is a poor imitation of what would be fun in an anime set in a dystopia, and unfortunately, it is not even amusing in a "so bad it's good" way. There is not one time in the 50 minutes of the "director's cut" that there is any reason to care about what's happening other than some decent action scenes that carry little meaning. The characters are non-existent. The story seems like a tech demo or music video with how poorly it gets across any themes or ideas, just an excuse to go from one set piece to another. The main character is a bog standard edge lord without a personality. Who else is there? His love interest is brain-dead. The…

Soukihei MD Geist is way better than it should be. The overall narrative is simplistic and sometimes incoherent, but that doesn't matter. The characters are more complex than they are at first glance, and by the end subvert all expectations. The Ova is well paced with action throughout, but still leaves enough down time so as it does not become repetitive. The animation is well done throughout, never feeling dated. The design of the “Fightechs” (exoskeletons) is rather unique as is the other machinery used in the anime. And, the music fits extremely well with the visuals. Overall, even with a lackluster story, Soukihei MD Geist is definitely worth watching.

Anyone who claimed that M.D. Geist was the most embarrassing and ridiculous thing to watch clearly is either lying or just outright not watching it for what it really is. M.D. Geist is proof of what anime in the 1980’s represented, regarding as to how the art, visuals and story intertwined with giving a story as to what space opera and action scenes are like. In the beginning of most vintage anime fans, most have written this series off as if it just corny, too “macho” or just barely watchable because the plot does not simply make sense. (To be fair, most would be remised if they started watching this for the first time with seeing other anime that look like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Fist of the North Star or Berserk.) Still, M.D. Geist was pretty much what Mad Max was trying to emulate…

This motherfucker right here, this is the good shit. This shit goes hard, it rules. M.D Geist is pure artistic spirit, even its faults deserve praise, the little that there are. 40k fucking WISHES it could have space marines as cool as Geist, the ultimate warrior. There will never be another anime like this and its a fucking crime. PERIOD. You will see people argue how its an overhyped, "so bad its good" ancient piece of transitionary animation fiction, a relic of the past to be forgotten. And i tell you now, that those people are not to be trusted. They would tell you that Violence Jack is total garbage; after which they throw the tape into the river. Would you trust a man like that? Because you should'nt, they the are the enemy of art. They will praise Miyazaki and Oishii for all eternit…

M.D Geist is a post apocalyptic 1980's anime about a super soldier named Geist who is an unstoppable killing machine who wages a war against evil robots. That's pretty much the gist of it. There's more going on but the plot is mostly incoherent and the English dubbing is some of the worst i've heard in a while. So the plot and voice acting are pretty bad but the action scenes and the designs of the robots and mech suits are really awesome especially the one Geist uses. He looks like a cross between a Gundam and an American football player and i just think it looks super cool. The chaotic action really well done by old school anime standards and the soundtrack is great with some blistering guitar solo's as you watch the gory action. This is pretty harsh stuff with heads being ripped off an…

This is one of those 80s OVAs that I think is underappreciated and misunderstood. It does what it's supposed to do. This OVA is not for people who like sweet romance and moe bullshit. It's masculine, powerful, brutal and almost nihilistic. Protagonist might not have any character development, but that's the point. He's a genetically modified human who was made for only one purpose, to kill. He doesn't care about women, or friendship. He just to kill and eternally prolong the state of war. The ending really captures the spirit of his character, but I won't spoil anything. The music is good, the graphics are gritty and brutal. In the 80s anime studios weren't scared to experiment, meanwhile about 95% of today's anime series are the same thing recycled over and over again. I enjoyed it very…

They literally took a 1980s American action hero and placed him in an anime... AND I LIKE IT. Highlights: - Geist is a super cool main character! Each moment he's on screen is the best part of the movie - The wailing and shredding guitar score fits the "over the top" action and awesomeness the character - None of this movie is boring [which is good, because its so short] Criticisms: - Weird, nearly incoherent storyline with questionable side characters - Very poor sound design made this feel unfinished [place-holder-sounding effects and multiple instances of missing sounds] - The animation quality is also poor, the other characters besides Geist have inconstancies and proportional issues [not to mention the rushed feel of the static animation] - The ending is a little ambiguous and open-…

If NGE fans get to say that detractors just "don't get it" then people adding this OVA to Worst Anime lists are in the same boat. I wasn't expecting much from this show, but, what I found was deeper than I had expected. Geist has no time to waste on needless words, this forces you to actually pay attention to what you see on screen. Upon his release, he spies a broken pocket watch on the ground. He picks it up, and destroys it with a smile. Watch for that smile,it speaks volumes more than any internal monologue could have. Geist is a battle freak. All he thinks about, all day, every day, is the next battle, fire, blood, explosions. This is how they made him. Every action is weighed and measured by how much fighting it will bring. Geist shows, for example, the ability to delay his battle…

This week we're doing yet another requested review of a short OVA. This one is from '86. So, this came out when I was a newborn baby who didn't even understand snark, sarcasm or the importance thereof. It was written by Sanjo Riku and produced by the Studio Zero G-Room. A relatively unknown studio that seems to have made nine OVAs and fucked off into the abyss. I've never reviewed anything of theirs before, though I did watch one of their OVAs back when I was getting into anime and I was just randomly watching anything starring Hayashibara Megumi. And, I've gotta say, I don't recall Saber Marionette R being good. But who knows, maybe I'm just not remembering it that well cause it's been nearly two decades since I saw it. Maybe they're a brilliant studio that had their time cut short. Tho…

An absolute masterpiece; at what it is supposed to achieve. This infamous ova hilariously fails at story, characterization and apparently even the art sucked before the director's cut. I'm lucky to have seen the director's cut first. I do not see a steaming pile of shit when I watch M.D. Geist; I see a masterfully crafted piece of sci fi action schlock. Seeing all the impractically over the top mechanical designs clashing with each other both in universe and aesthetically set to kick ass synth laden jazz fusion is an absolutely killer combo. The final fight scene also stands out; its like a three tiered final boss from one of those ridiculously hard NES games, and just as intense. Finally, Geist himself is an absolute asshole which does manage to differentiate himself from all the oth…

Do you want an absolutely batshit crazy and over the top anime? Then this is just what you're looking for. M.D. Geist is widely regarded as a poor production from an objective standpoint, which is true, but it's somewhat understandable due to its status as an experimental work and beyond that there's no doubt about it, it's one of the most solid and right down to earth OVAs I've seen from a time period where animated works were simply a lot more golden, it shines and it doesn't try to be anything that it isn't. It's just fun and gory mindless action, with some absolutely spectacular design work to boot. It does what it aims to do really well and it really doesn't need great characters or story to make it as enjoyable as it already is, at all. It's the spitting image of any dumb testosteron…

MD Geist: The Most Dangerous Geist was an atrocious one episode OVA series from the mid-80s and tries to be super MANLY without having anything interesting or even all that much bad-ass-ness contained in the show. It feels like a Chinese bootleg of Fist of the North Star and saying that is truly an insult to Kenshiro's unrivalled manliness! If you look at the photo for Genocyber, it proudly displays that it was directed by the same guy who directed this piece of trash. Why in the holy mother of hell did they believe this was a selling point was way beyond me. If I had worked on this travesty, I would've wanted to track down every known copy in existence and destroy it with a sledgehammer. MD Geist tries so hard... SO hard to be an edgy rule of cool bad-ass show set in a post-apocalyptic…

This show falls into the "so bad it's good" category. MD Geist is a product of its era. During the heyday of Arnold making action flicks, this came out to cash in on that genre. This show follows the protagonist Geist as he murders his way through an OVA. Geist will attempt to kill anything that gets in his way. That includes humans, motorbikes, cars, airplanes, and whatever else. Very quickly into the show it will become apparent that MD Geist operates on a rule. The main protagonist of the show seems to be self-aware of that rule. The rule in MD Geist is that if you talk, you die. I suppose I should spoiler tag that. Any character that utters a line of dialogue in this show is fair game to die immediately and brutally. It would probably be a very poor idea to play a drinking game to t…

Most anime fans have heard legends about some TERRIBLE anime that was floating around video stores in the late 1980s. The legend of MD Geist! My friends, I have seen MD Geist, and it was bad. It was REALLY bad. The plot, characters, animation, voice acting, was all absolute shit! At least good old Geist has that awesome 80's power metal to listen to while carving up random dudes. This isn't as terrible as Kite, because MD Geist has no illusions and knows exactly what it wants to be. It wishes to channel the spirit of other big, dumb, 80s action films like Commando and Rambo 3. Geist is like watching a Rambo movie that was animated by children, written by a mentally handicapped man, and directed by a chimpanzee. Overall, I wouldn't waste your time watching the whole thing, but maybe go to y…

This a very strange anime keep in mind that if you seek to watch it. For me it was conceive to showcase the worst aspects of human civilization, so the main character is an anti-hero in the full sense of the term, no a Walter White type where you empathize with him in some levels, this is a full born war machine which only seeks to kill. Appropriately the rest of the cast has very little redeeming qualities, so is hard to like any of them, much less care about their demise. This is why while watching this anime you must have constant awareness of the big picture, in this planet humanity fail, it surrendered itself to its most base instincts and there will be no salvation. If you accept that then you mind find the show interesting, but never fun of entertaining.

MD Geist is awesome! It's a unique film. MD Geist is a very unusal lead. He is one of my most favourite characters ever in anime. MD Geist has a fairly simple, straightforward, story, and works well because of it. There is no need to be overcomplex, when you can have a badass lead and well written, but straightforward, characters. It's nihalistic, dark, and straightforward. MD Geist is the complete opposite of wussy boy anime males. The total and utter opposite. Handsome, powerful, and masculine. He does nothing you might expect, including when it comes to the female lead. He likes killing, and nothing diverts him from it. You'll never think of combat knives in the same way again, once you watch it. Nothing is what it seems. The female lead, Vaiya, is not what she seems. Even the 3 b…
