Genocyber is an interesting curiosity, but even if it shows some promise at the beginning and offers a few somewhat ahead-of-its-time ideas, it just fails to come together as a story, or even as a gore-filled spectacle. I'm not sure if I saw any other anime this jumbled and inconsistant, and while the first three episodes were somewhat following a theme and a very loose logical threat about corporate and governmental abuse turning the protagonist into a monster... It just completely goes off the rails after that and the ending is just a confused, rushed mess.
The gore the series is famous for is indeed pretty over-the-top, although I have to admit that most of the violent scenes serve a function, it's not pure exploitation (outside maybe that hospital scene, who knows what the hell that w…

Truly too good to be appreciated by the modern anime viewer. The attention to detail in both the art and animation is absolutely brilliant. The plot, storyline and intercharacter involvement are underrated as well, as it is quite obviously overshadowed by the gratuitous amount of violence and gore. The aforementioned gratuitous gore and violence is not to be underestimated, however. The sheer magnitude is of course excessive, although applied well when taking a look at the broader picture. Scenes when only one individual is the source of aggression, can be felt directly as if you were the target of said aggression or the adversely the aggressor. Not to mention all the of the detail that goes into every scene when someone is digging through their own brain or being torn apart. It really is…

Frankenstein’s monster is a cyber-psycho
I struggled to finish this show, but now I can tick it off my bucket list. Genocyber feels like Frankenstein’s monster gained psychic ability and fused itself with tech cybernetic parts then tried to wipe out humanity. In the end, the real monsters were the humans themselves.
The show is hyper violent and is listed as one of the most gore filled anime in history. The first episode delivers though confusing at first, the middle of this show felt confusing and a letdown; it gives the impression that the protagonist is the monster and we should start rooting for it. The last two episodes play like a revenge fantasy, and then it ends.
I have mixed feelings about this show; I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who’s just starting, it’s more to tick off…

An obscenely violent and thinly plotted anime that's only really good if your a sick fuck or a metalhead. The characters were kinda boring but the animation was really pretty at times and it had some really strong atmosphere, but the story was a little too predictable to fully recommend as a hidden gem or anything other than a "so bad it's good" violent cyberpunk theme park ride with way too much violence watch it with friends on a discord call at night to really drive up the fun factor but other than that I'd advise watching something a little more fun.

I have seen there are a few reviews that have given this a 10/10 which quite frankly, is f**king wild. I am giving this a 5/10 and here is why.
Firstly the animation. Classing 90s animation that honestly, I could give 10/10 every damn time. Objectively though, it's pretty average for its time. There is a lot of body horror here that is done well. Other than that however there is not much more to say than it's average. Colour pallet is fine. Character movement is fine. Background animation is fine. It's just fine. I came to this show, like many people would, to see just how violent it really is. It is very violent, however, It feels like violence for the sake of violence most of the time. 6/10
Secondly the story is actually based on an incomplete manga. This may in turn explain when it's…

Genocyber was a bit of a surprise. While it’s mostly a generic mecha anime with the added shock factor, its messaging is very disjointed. To expect an all out gorefest would be delusional. I had been naive once, but upon completion, the story itself is weirdly cryptic and nonsensical. Genocyber isn’t one linear story; rather, it’s divided into three parts that don’t necessarily feel connected together. The only thing that helps string it together is the creation of the new weapon of mass destruction itself.
Genocyber tells the story about how man’s creations can lead to his own downfall. The story itself is seemingly cryptic because there’s a lot packed into a five episode series. As suggested by its title, the main focus of the series is on the Genocyber, a mechanized alien robot with ps…

Going into this, I expected a hyperviolent gore fest. The kind where you can turn your brain off and enjoy some good ol' '90s edginess. What I got instead was a confusing mess of utter nonsense. There is some of that touted gore and violence (which, if you don't like, you shouldn't be watching a series like this in the first place, getting offended is on you) but honestly, the rest of the show is just... boring. The ending leaves no satisfaction at all either, so you don't even feel like sticking it out for all five episodes is worth it. It fails on just about every selling point it was supposed to have (though MAYBE you could argue the first ep or two make some promises, the rest of the show completely fails to deliver). The violence and gore was surprisingly sparse despite the show's rep…

I had nightmares for days after watching this anime! It also graphically portrayed violence against children when an attack chopper's chaingun ripped into the bodies of two children that accompanied the main protagonist. I cannot in good conscience recommend this anime.
The story was convoluted, and the art style is way too gruesome, despite its main draw for the story. The characters did not react to various situations that would seen realistic.
Too many flaws were present in every character, including the main character. This makes them too stupid. I don't think that others would find this anime enjoyable because the story is completely lost in the gruesome gore and nudity. This anime revels in the gore and nudity, and this is why it was banned in Japan.

If for some reason you ever wanted to see an anime that showcases the absolute worst of humanity, look no further than Genocyber.
Based on an unfinished 1992 manga by Tony Takezaki, this 1994 cyberpunk/biopunk OVA is an unapologeticly brutal gore fest that relishes in nihilism, human suffering and body horror.
With Koichi Ohata, who brought us such dregs as M.D. Geist and the Ikki Tousen series in the director's chair and Sho Aikawa, who is now best known for writing Martian Successor Nadesico and Full Metal Alchemist as well as various tokusatsu shows as the series writer, Genocyber is another of Aikawa's early works in anime that consist of immature, edgy, nihilistic themes with unlikable characters as seen in the likes of Legend of the Overfiend, Violence Jack and Angel Cop.
And Aikawa…

Genocyber is considered to be the most explicitly grotesque and gory anime of all time. Having now seen it, I can't say I disagree. It was produced in 1994 by studio Artmic, best known for producing most of the Bubblegum Crisis franchise. It finished airing just a few days after yours truly was born.
It's another product of the 80s era of ultraviolent cyberpunk OVAs. The premise is pretty simple. Man creates some kind of new bioweapon, the Genocyber. It unsurprisingly gets out of control and the End Times™ ensue. I've lost count of how many 80s OVAs I've seen at this point where humanity meets a gruesome end with little to no redemption. It's amazing the kind of nihilism that gets instilled into the psyche of a people when they've got 2 nuclear cataclysms in their national history.

Genocyber embodies the campy, self-indulgent extremes of ultraviolence which anime of the 80s and 90s were often wont to go, pushing the envelope in terms of gore and visceral detail to the point where it is now infamous for its fleshy fanaticism, even among those who haven't seen it. However, when you scrape away the blood and grime, Genocyber is at its heart a wildly inconsistent OVA, with a complicated yet incomprehensible story, clothed in a maverick art direction that's a love letter to Geiger and Carpenter. In this way, it's a bit of an enigma. Is it enough to praise it on creative vision alone, even if the execution often comes off as amateurish at best? I would argue that it must be considered as a cohesive whole, and only then can a fair assessment of this eccentric anime be made.…

i needed my first review to be about genocyber cuz it was my first ever gory-like anime that i've ever watched and even tho it sucks, its actually really good. ''I aint lettin' no fuckin' demon take me to Hell! Never!''
genocyber is very poorly animated and the first two segments are ass BUT the amount of brutal violence gives the masterpiece label a very plausible reason to exist. Even tho it is not the best anime ever, it really does its job to me very disgusting and trashy, which is a completely reasonable since i believe that is what the creators wanted it to be.

If there's one thing to be said for Genocyber, it's audacious. Very few anime, regardless of budget, studio, or intent, are as violent as Genocyber. If your sole consideration of quality is the amount of blood and guts spilled per episode, Genocyber may very well become your favorite anime ever. But if you value any other metric of quality in your art, Genocyber has nothing to offer you. The characters are functional only in that they propel Genocyber's limited and unsatisfying plot forward, the animation does a good job with the gore because anything beyond that is a bit too outside of Genocyber's focus to warrant spending time or money on to it look good. Aside from a helicopter turning a group of children to chum, there is also very little that's memorable within Genocyber.
Overall, t…

For all the powerful and creatively disturbing iconography, the detailed art design, and the gratuitously over-the-top gore and violence displayed in some of the best quality animation you can expect from a 90's OVA, at the end of the day, Genocyber feels like a uninspired rehash of a lot of tropes and ideas previously and posthumously seen in other cyberpunk media.
With a plot that is convoluted at best, and utterly nonsensical at worst (especially as it goes along each subsequent episode), a main character who barely has a semblance of a personality (let alone any clear arc or direction), and a flat cast that is there just to kill time until their inevitable demise comes around, there's really nothing to get out of this OVA besides the colorful ultraviolence in all of its beautiful han…

Another OVA that (allegedly) was cut short in production, loosly based on an equally cut short manga by noted mangaka Tony Takezaki; this time directed by the man behind M.D Geist. Of the alleged planned 9 episodes, what is here is another beautifully violent slice of animated fiction. Over the course of the five episodes, Genocyber racks up what could possibly be the highest prospected kill count of any Animated feature, i assure you the title is no exaggeration. I would of course be be-miss to not mention the soundtrack, which leads to probably one of the most jarring disconnects between visual and audio you will probably ever see; its really good however, put it on your workout mix. If you're unsure, just watch the first episode, its the longest of the series and works rather substantia…

MAN, the first few episodes of Genocyber are so good. They just ooze with that early 90's over-the-top cyberpunk goodness. (A heads up about that: some of the violence is ALOT and might make some queasy. I'm talking people getting torn apart in slow motion, organs pouring out, the whiole nine yards) I love the city setting and the designs of some of the cybernetic mechs are so freaking cool and memorable.
After that the series changes setting and completely drops the ball because of it. The desert is so forgettable, the plot, which was absurd to begin with, got even more convoluted and harder to follow. The characters have no personality. It was an absolute chore to finish. alot of Genocybers shortcomings were forgiveable in the early episodes because of how fun it was to watch, but once…

Genocyber is the only anime I've seen so far that compelled me to write a review.
This is a classic story of good versus evil, but flipped on its head. The story begins following the perspective of a girl. Daily she faces the horror and evil of society. One day she unlocks the godly power of the Genocyber. Her constant suffering leads to a violent genocidal rage towards mankind. Flashing to the distant future, she becomes the "Satan" of that world's religion, while her once comrade becomes their "God". And of course, battle ensues.
This OVA, similar to Evangelion, mixes religion and sci-fi brilliantly in my opinion. At the same time however, Genocyber also contemplates on the nature of evil within all humans. Is the protagonist wrong for revolting, or were the humans wrong for provoking…

Genocyber is probably one of the most controversial due to it's gore and ending. The MAL rating is totally unfair since we have so many shows like this in the 80s and 90s. Japanese artists during that time had highest creativity in making fantastic works with boundless imagination. In before I mention some slight story aspects first of all you have to see through lens of Elaine only if you start thinking about the other lives you may get disappointed but people who like these old shows esp the Black Magic M66 and Armitage you will definitely enjoy this kind of show
Art style is the most stunning part of Genocyber, pure cel shaded art made with passion that is timeless and they capture the human emotions so well, it makes the show a worthwhile experience. Every episode has fantastic art. T…

The Ultimate Cyberpunk Anime. Misunderstood, misinterpreted, Far more deft & intelligent than what it makes itself out to be.
Don't let the ultra violence offended you It's there for genuine reasons.
This OVA is the ultimate filter between the enlighten & the oldtypes (those who's souls are weighted down by gravity). Separating the passive from the true connoisseurs of the japanese animated art form. Art is MADE for show's like this. Genocyber is pushing boundaries & the fact that it violently upsets so many, is to me proof of this perspective.
The Ending is thematically poignant containing a positive message. Genocyber is secretly genius.
Genocyber presents raw showcase of capitalism corrupting the human collective. Unfortunately this infamous & controversial OVA is far ahead of its…

This will feel like watching 3 different OVAs. The First Episode is amazing. Top Notch Horror/Gore, a story that is actually written with some level of competency and Interesting Sci-Fi concept that is at least explained in this one. What's funny is that I actually somewhat cared about the characters in this one. Due to some clever writing and expository details being told in a way that felt natural and built the story coherently, I thought it done very well. The Gore was at the right moments and did not interfere with the story beats. Also made sense in the scenes, where they put it. Some of it was even comically hilarious in a twisted way.
Episode 2 & 3 start after a bit of a timeskip. The Gore is just as good, if not even a little better. However the story is kinda laughable. It still…
