There are a couple takes to what was the basis for this story here is what i think was the main source. It focuses on the idea of love only to meet an end. Love becomes hate. Until another love comes to play to show a side that was hidden. Seeing the hidden side connected that fate has side choices no matter what as long as you are open to it. In other words just because one path closes doesn't mean you are not on the quest you seek.
