The animation for Witch Hat Atelier is great, but otherwise the show is massively overrated, it baffles me how highly rated it is.
The show tries to convey a serious story, but at the same time it's very childish while it portrays a bunch of whiney little witches. A lot of the characters are annoying, coco in particular. I guess nearly killing her own mother wasn't enough to knock some sense into her and change her attitude into a more serious one. Overall she's a fool hampered by her own addiction to the idea of magic. It doesn't help that the show constantly tries to portray her childish infatuation with magic, with the sparkling eyes and all.
Let's talk about Qifrey for a moment, how has he not questioned how coco found out about the first test and how she went to take it? The story s…

Because people have been so eager to compare this story to Frieren, naturally, my expectations were high and they were not met. I only finished the season because I was watching it together with others.
The magic system
I can't deny that it's somewhat unique, but in order to bring something new to the table, it sacrifices the most appealing aspect of magic: it's coolness. Here the most important requirement of being good at magic is drawing circles and lines prettily. Also memorizing as many as possible. It's kind of like learning kanji... I admit it would be cool if I could do magic by drawing kanjis but I would suck at it so it wouldn't be too much fun. Anyway I can tell that the writer is trying hard to show creative ways you can use this power and that there's more to it then just dr…

Okay. Watched this with my daughter (13yo)
We were both very excited since it was about witches, magic, beautiful art, and high reviews - check check check.
We started watching n watched n watched and finished the S1.
We both agreed that its wasn't ALL that at all!
We came from watching Wisteria - sword and wand. And it was waaaay more fun and exciting and happening than this show.
Story: is ok. But literally is it the pace or just something was missing like it wasnt properly glued. Kinda slow pacing as well.
Also, its kinda political, about prejudice of who should have access to magic and who decides that. Its honestly super annoying - some small group of humans deciding who gets to learn magic or have their memories wiped.
Overall, it just becomes Not enjoyment, but rather annoying to…

Pretty animation, great art direction, love the clothing designs (character designs are not my cup of tea but still nice to look at). That's all the good things I have to say.
But the story is bad. Everyone spells out their personality and motivation out loud. Cutesy moments repeatedly do not work and undermine key emotional beats (Coco does not mourn her mother visibly at all, she just says how sad she is and how she loses sleep over it but it would be much more compelling to see this rather than for her to state it). It sometimes tries to be motivational but all the advice this series gives is the equivalent of 'live, laugh, love' (for example when Coco was like "omg I have a specialty I can draw straight lines rlly well," and Quifrey was like "when u feel sad, just remember u have a sp…

Beautiful animation, no story.
This is on the same level and feel like Kanchigai no Atelier Meister. It is a sweet, kind, relaxed anime. But it doesn't deserve to be in a top 1000. And why does everyone praise the magic system? It is just a worse version of the Fullmetal Alchemist system. There you had to at least use your own power. Here just a perfectly made stamp with a good quality ink can give a drunk donkey the ability to be the best wizard in the world.
I was very disappointed to see this as a top 200. Top 2000 ok. But this is not it really... In a week I will forget everything that happened in this anime. The characters are painfully onesided. The teacher has a tiny hint of a bad-boy around him, but it doesn't even fit his young age. Just like him taking care of 4 small girls and…

This one is boring as bones. Great visuals cannot carry the show alone. 80% of the cast and characters are absolutely positively dull. By the end of season 1, there are no like-able characters, they’re all boring. Overly positive, forced mystery…it’s just not good, YET. In anime, it’s not uncommon for people to tattoo their favorite characters, or their symbols, or some type of reference….I can’t imagine anyone wanting to put a sticker on their car with one of these characters, let alone a tattoo. A “Who is that?” forgettable cast followed by “what is that?” Forgettable plot that leads you to nowhere on season 1.
I don’t mind taking their time with world building, but there has to be some type of delivery. Season finale just cut off on a cliff hanger….but this…watching this was like goin…

The setting and the animation is good. The characters and the story of this first season are dogshit.
Characters are all one-dimensional and boring, it's the typical "they are super nice and good souls but have that one thing that is sad and drives them" bs.
The story is just unfinished, it ends in the middle of a fight, and after all that world-building not a single thing came anywhere close to a conclusion.
If this wasn't anime, people wouldn't tolerate this. I would not watch this unless there is already a second season that at least finishes part of the story.

Good magic system in a not so magic world...
I just finished Witch Hat Atelier. The protagonist is an extremely optimistic, recklessly impulsive girl who seems to attract every possible misfortune. Her actions carry consequences that she almost never has to truly face. Conflicts shift from organic to implausible within seconds, and supporting characters often behave in ways that feel more convenient than believable.
Setting aside the fact that her teacher looks like a younger clone of Satoru Gojo and surrounds himself exclusively with young girls, there’s always something that feels off about him. It’s clear that his motivations aren’t purely altruistic, and he has no issue making sacrifices to achieve his goals. The subplot involving the villains and his personal pursuit of them is far…

An extremely well-produced, beautifully animated, and well-written narrative that is partially hindered by slow pacing without enough episodes dedicated to this method of storytelling. And unfortunately, it is better knowing that this leads to the season ending halfway through an arc on a cliffhanger. However, nearly everything else surrounding Witch Hat Atelier is phenomenal. The fantastical setting and historical worldbuilding are excellent. Moreover, the brilliant magic system operates around understandable principles, defined rules, and terrifying consequences. Furthermore, the passionate production created standalone moments, stylistic scenes, and small flourishes that came alive through dynamic sound design and expressive storyboards. Highly recommended after more content is released…

Witch Hat Atelier It's similar to cleaning before an important visit. You make the necessary arrangements to make it look good. But we all know the dirt is still hidden under the rug..
One undeniable aspect of this anime is its incredibly high level of production and animation. Bug Films wanted to rectify the misstep of their previous anime, and they succeeded in a memorable way. Every episode, no matter how you look at it, is incredibly difficult to find a flaw. Every frame, every movement, every sparkle—everything is meticulously crafted to ensure it looks its best on screen. The aesthetic is exquisite. Everything stands out exactly as it should. A visual presentation worthy of accompanying a highly creative magic system. Magic in Atelier is, in a sense, "artisanal." You have to know th…

This anime could have been amazing, if only we hadn't been given such a weak protagonist. She has little to no presence, and so it doesn't matter how amazing the animation is, or what else they tried to do with the story - it just falls flat. I wasn't expecting an overpowered main character, but I was AT LEAST hoping for something more "creative" - ESPECIALLY considering the circumstances she finds herself in. Instead, we're forced to watch her stumble and be borderline useless, while everything else basically happens around her. And this is just not an interesting concept, nor is it fun to watch.
The only saving grace is the animation, and the potential for things to hopefully get better in the later seasons. So while this isn't a terrible show, especially if you haven't seen that many f…

Oh, Witch Hat Atelier. What an adorable anime. So sweet. So precious. So aggressively cute that you can practically hear your teeth dissolving in real time.
The main character is adorable too, of course. She has exactly two modes: crying because she is sorry for existing, or gasping in sugary wonder at literally anything placed in front of her. And then there are her adorable little friends – refreshingly original, naturally, because anime would never rely on a group of sweet, neatly labelled archetypes.
And let’s not forget the villains, who are definitely not exaggerated, painfully obvious and stamped straight out of the Big Book of Dark Mysterious Bad Guys. No, no. They are subtle. Layered. Complex. You can tell because they look ominous, say ominous things, and occasionally stand aro…

Promise of Michelin star meal, but a serving of a luke-warm appetizer with good plating.
This review will not be popular, but just note that I myself enjoyed the season and gave it an 8. But that right there is the problem. It felt like it was going to give me a 9
Visuals and fluidity of animation: was the best feature of this season. High production and definitely miles apart from the generic fantasy or isekai that resemble visual novels at times - ***9***
Characters: Generic tropes, but enjoyable nonetheless. Characters giving hints of backstory started fleshing them out, but not enough shown to separate them from generic trope A girl, generic trope B girl, etc. 6.5 when viewed as a single entity. But as a whole and with implied growth, I suspect season 2 will fix this issue and consi…

After completing the first season, the anime is a must-watch for anyone new to or familiar with the fantasy genre surrounding the fantastical wizardly world. Like I've mentioned in my previous post, the voice acting, animation, color palette, and music are superb. What stands out the most for this anime that separates itself from others is that the anime also introduces a new system for wielding magic, in that they have to draw symbols and lines while keeping it a secret practice in order to activate a spell. It's an intriguing parallel that bears a similarity to how ancient civilizations used symbols and lines as a written language, such as hieroglyphics, or characters found in various Asian cultures.
However, many individuals may notice many of the recurring elements and storylines that…

This is best anime series this anime season, it is not even a contest. The production quality, the characters, the story - everything is top notch. And they even left gigantic cliffhanger at the end, one that will continue when season 2 airs one day. Hopefully not in some 10 years from now.
Animation and music: high quality. You can tell that frames feel alive, and that this anime was handled with care. It was already prolonged once, and I can understand why. They wanted more time to work on their baby and it payed off big time. The music is also good, I very much enjoyed the intro one. It has that medieval vibes to it despite using modern instruments. Which fit the theme of the show being set in medieval like fantasy world.
Overall - both animation and music are joy for eyes and ears. I…

So it begins... Ctrl C Ctrl V "I made up my mind to call this Spring Season the disappointing season." I won't even check the reviews, I'm already foreshadowing lots of 10s.
Well, this is gonna be a a difficult one. Long story short, the visuals that the people are all in love with it actually hurts the show. Not that it matters. The story is already weak anyway. And I'm the kind the person that would take a logical storytelling over something that just looks nice. A nice, shiny, golden turd is still a turd.
I haven't read the sauce, I don't care about the sauce. And at this point, I don't even care about it. And neither should you. The whole "it is done better in the sauce" argument is invalid. Firstly, better is NOT the same with good. And unless in the source the story was done at 180,…

Dunce Cap Atelier, even if a flawed fantasy series, should dethrone Frieren, as the magic system is more novel, and there is a cohesive structure and direction for the story rather than carefree, aimless, SoLish elf-hag adventures. Although the author was raised on Harry Potter, so don't expect too much. Setting-wise, the series looks like medieval Europe, though there are unique critters, like the brushbuddy, and odd fixtures that are dictated by magic rather than ordinary physics, such as the Dadah Range, which has earthen spheres that look like little planets, kind of like The Little Prince. These exotic features aren't just for aesthetics as they're a reminder of how magic can distort vast stretches of the world and the responsibility that comes with using it. The author's art is, by f…

Woke is back and better than ever baby. If you’re one of those people who thinks LGBT themes in anime is western propaganda and want to keep your Japanese media pure and weird, Frieren, Blue Archive and K-on or whatever the right wing larpers are pretending to care about are down the hall. Witch Hat Atelier is unapologetically “woke” but not in an over the top caricature sort of way, it all makes sense within the context of the story and it couldn’t have come at a more important time given the current state of the world. It’s one of those shows that not only lives up to the hype, but exceeds it in almost every way. It’s one of the best high fantasy shows I’ve seen and features one of the best casts and protagonists in modern anime history. It’s got a really good and interesting story that’…

I've seen plenty of anime in recent years revolving around magic and witches. Not all these type of similar anime are created equal but it has the familiar tropes: a fantasy or modern world, magic with a deep lore and history, and of course, the colorful cast of characters. Hell, there's another show airing this same season about witches: The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch. However, Witch Hat Atelier drew me in with its creative world building, character development, and overall tone of its highly appealing story.
As someone who have read parts of the manga, I knew we were seeing something special in the making. Just from the production quality alone, you can make an impression that this adaptation is aiming for quality. By quality, I mean high production visuals with stellar charac…

When people talk about fantasy anime today, they often think of battles between good and evil, grand adventures across unknown lands, journeys to become the strongest in the world, stories filled with harems, or narratives centered on character growth and self-improvement. WHA is no exception in terms of its premise. It begins with a simple setup: an ordinary girl accidentally enters the world of witches after an accident involving magic. However, beneath its colorful and seemingly innocent magical world lies a surprisingly thoughtful story. Behind its beautiful and enchanting appearance are questions about childhood growth, disability in a magical world, the darker side of knowledge, and the different ways people perceive magic itself. Although the anime has only adapted a small portion o…
