Gorgeous CGI animation can't save a horrendous messy plot and horrible pacing. The first 4 episodes were genuinely great, at least 8/10. The next 3 episodes were good but not amazing, 7/10. From then onwards it was a downward spiral and the writing quality plummeted. Every arc focuses on a different hero but basically all of them end on a cliffhanger, and I felt like it was implied that we'll get a final ultimate resolution at the end of it. But when episode 24 finally came around, basically fucking nothing happens. There's no resolution at all and nothing is answered. It was extremely unsatisfying. Other than that, all the arcs after the E Soul arc were full of little plot holes and careless writing that wouldn't have been issues by themselves but they snowball into giving you this feelin…

Overrated mediocre show. If you were to judge it by simply the first two arcs, it would be a great show, 9.5/10. The first arc being quite great, however the cliffhanger at the end is never addressed in the entire show. The second arc, which built upon the character of the seeming assassin in the previous arc, also proved to be a well executed reverse spiderman. However all arcs after that were boring as hell. All the female arcs and the dog one were much worse than the first ones where the betrayal, plot twists and character development were king. Only the final arc sort of tied them all together, being somewhat interesting, but it was an exposition heavy episode with little progress to be made.
7/10 for the entire show, 9.5/10 for the first two arcs. You can just watch episodes 1-7 and…

If frustration were embodied in an anime, this is it.
When To Be Hero X is good, it's really good. Awesome art, great characters, great worldbuilding. The problem is, this isn't a story. There's no arc, there's no climax. This is pretty much an anthology of stories setting up the next season, and that's just so disappointing. As strong as the characters and drama were, I feel cheated. 24 episodes, and nothing resembling a climax, a significant event, or even a checkpoint.
A cliffhanger isn't unusual for a series in progress, but even then the series usually concludes with at least some semblance of progress. Not so in this case. Season 1 of 'To Be Hero X' is supplemental backstory, not the core narrative itself, and as such feels like a waste of time in isolation. When it comes to scori…

I don't know what to say other than PEAK FICITION! Yes, it's the pinnacle of imagination!!!
The Chinese have proven to the Japanese that they are ready to compete in the anime industry, and yes, another Chinese anime has reached the pinnacle of fame, proving it.
X's abilities are beyond imagination, and facing him is almost impossible.
For the previous 20 episodes, he was just a mysterious character, a hero who doesn't seek fame, power, or even money.
He is a true hero, a concept of heroism that I, as viewers, have never understood.
And yes, the epic battles and fights are coming in the second season, which only God knows when it will arrive. Anyway, my rating is 9.8/10. May 25, 2025.
See you in the second season, Insha Allah. Peace be upon you.

What makes an anime truly great? Story? Characters? Worldbuilding? Animation? Music?
Ideally, it’s a balance of all these elements working together. To Be Hero X aims for that mix, but while it nails the production quality, it struggles to keep up in the story department.
Story
The series juggles several storylines that eventually merge into a single overarching narrative. Each arc offers decent drama and subtle connections to the bigger picture.
However, the final act, that meant to tie everything together, happens in just one episode, and that’s where things fall apart. It feels rushed and incomplete, like finishing a puzzle only to realize the central piece is missing.
Let's ignore the fact that sometimes the story and characters are cliched, and say if each storyline had been expanded…

One of the few pieces of media where in 24 episodes they are incapable of telling a cohesive complete story. The show starts with an intriguing premise and world building, but diverges to flashback after flashback about origin story of cameos characters in previous episodes without much relation to the original plot at all. The writer expect you to care about random characters with no context for why they even matter to the original plot. instead the background characters in these flashbacks are the only ones with worthwhile information to the setting and world building. The viewer is left with way more questions than answers after finishing the show. It feels like watching 1 hour of ads just to watch a 20 min video. The only reason it still deserve a 7 is the amazing animation and music.…

The dialogue and pacing can be hit or miss. The show starts off very strong episodes 1 through 4 then the fall of begins.
There are way too many characters that eat up screen time. When you get attached to a character be prepared to not see them for a long time or never again. They rush to the next character. Most of the characters are surface level. The dialogue is extremely predictable or on the nose. The backstory of the characters all feel the same. Financially well off and talented (mostly great at making and fixing machines like an engineer).
There is one character who is a master class in character creation. The character back story is extremely unique, dialogue isn't on the nose or predictable, and the chemistry the character has with other characters is a chefs kiss.

Is To Be Hero X perfect?
Nope.
But is it a Masterpiece?
Yes
This is one of the most experimental shows in recent history. Taking risk in not only storytelling, characters, animations and trusting the audience to piece the story by themselves. Even if you are don't like every single character there will be a character that resonates with you personally. To Be Hero X challenges every convention of traditional storytelling.
It's not perfect by a longshot, there are ways they can improve for the 2nd season and they have had plenty of feedback but with how bold their vision of the story is I hope to see these characters doing something epic together. I just love these characters.
Also the music is easily an 11/10.

I’m running out of words to describe how insane this show is. To Be Hero X has completely blown me away and I believe it’s the best new anime of the 2020s. The story is masterfully told, the characterization is definitely one of the best I’ve seen if not the best, it’s so good that it’s unbelievable they were able to develop this many characters in 24 episodes.
Every piece of music feels like it knows exactly when to show up..it just lifts the emotion of each scene without trying too hard or getting in the way…the opening and ending songs are beautifully crafted and the emotional weight of the visuals that accompany them make them hit even harder. The themes are not just impactful but both powerful and deeply human.
The animation is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before since the episo…

A+ for effort, but Bloody annoying !
Don’t get me wrong here, I quite enjoyed this anime/donghua, but like Bleach of Ghosts past, I found myself pretty frustrated and annoyed when this series hit around episode 9.
It turns out that episode 9 and all the way to episode 23 (of 24 episodes in total), is a massive myriad of mini arcs that go through 400 Heroes' background story. Each with their little arc.
Yeah I know, 400 is me exaggerating a little, but it was for me way too many Backstory Mini Arcs to give this series even a 8 out of ten.
Each to their own, and it is still very much enjoyable, but be aware of and prepared for this before you dive into this and commit about seven to eight hours of your life watching this.
The drawing/animations are for me a little new and goes a little bac…

It's been a long time since Chinese anime—or donghuas, if you prefer—was booming. With entertainment giants like Tencent behind the scenes, it's to be hoped that at least the technical quality of such works won't disappoint. And in a scenario where such works are competing for market share amid already established South Korean and Japanese franchises, the summer 2025 season became a major turning point with the release of two donghuas that managed to break through the otaku bubble and reach a more general audience: Lord of Mysteries and To Be Hero X.
While the former was already highly anticipated due to its highly regarded novel, the latter came with the air of mystery of being an original work, meaning it doesn't use previously created material as a basis and then adapt it for animation…

TL;DR:
To Be Hero X is a fun show with phenomenal animation, an interesting premise, and well-defined characters. If you watch it for those three reasons and go in looking for an action-packed good time, you’ll be very happy — see @SkyBlue1012’s review! The ride is wild and you just have to strap in and not think about things too hard to enjoy it.
However, if you’re a cynic about these things and go in hoping for rock-hard, satisfying storytelling and strong character development, you may be disappointed (and very confused).
Full review:
Preamble: Because the show isn’t very clear about this (and no one in the reviews can seem to agree), I’ll be referring to the characters that get their own dedicated origin stories or (in one case) significant development over the course of multiple…

This series could be summed up simply as "a unique experience," as the world of To Be a Hero X deserves to be explored; it has so many interesting things to offer the viewer that it's insane.
Story 9/10
The only reason I don't give it a 10 is because the ending left more questions than answers, but that doesn't take away from all the incredible lore it presented, the themes it touched on about a hypocritical society, corrupt and false hero organizations, the creation of heroes and their purpose, self-confidence, etc. All of this makes this series work wonderfully. While it had its ups and downs, it ultimately recovered and became, for me, the best superhero story I've ever seen. Aside from the fact that it has many incredible moments, interesting plot twists, the 10 main heroes, each one…

I dont judge like a normal person but shi this one's good. it wasnt perfect like some ep are boring but i like seeing majorly of it is superb. The overall story is nice and loved the twist that they did which actually i like, the 3d 2d shi it was a goddamn good. I normally stay away from 3d with shitty animation but this one was nicely put together, no awkward animation and loved that they really gave much importance to x as it will always goes 3d and shi was cool
ps. first chinese shi that i like

Where do i start and where do i finish.
To be hero X is probably one of the best new gen anime out there.
The story telling, the feelings you develop for each character, the entire trust and fear system and how much it can affect one person.
X himself, the lore, the BUILD UP. It is easily one of the best anime out there.
This is also one of the most unique stories i have ever seen and frankly quite unpredictable especially in the first 4 episodes.
The constant swap to 2d and 3d animation and the power of X is probably never before seen in anime. As for the pacing i think it was just perfect considering the fact that we had 10 main characters and we had to see their story (well 11 if you count the OG nice).
Guys if you haven't watched to be hero X now is the perfect time to do so today was…

TO BE HERO X: Proof that there's still room among the anime community to appreciate donghua
The series featured 10 character arcs and a special arc with appealing character designs in both 3D and 2D. The animations are, without any doubt, some of the best this year.
What made TBHX different from the others was its power scaling, where it is solely based on people's trust and fear. It will always be captivating when such a random person becomes a superhero. Another intriguing aspect was that just because an individual becomes a hero, they will be friendly with fellow heroes. Hence, tournaments do exist in this lore.
All character arcs are executed pretty well, despite two not being in the most appealing way. However, the aforementioned arcs are still intriguing to watch.
In conclusion,…

To Be Hero X – I Wasn’t Ready for This (But Now I’m Emotionally Invested)
Okay, I’ll be honest: when I first saw To Be Hero X, I thought it was just going to be another run-of-the-mill shonen anime. You know, generic power-ups, dramatic yelling, some friendship speeches, and a hero who screams louder than his enemies. But OH NO. This anime came flying out of left field, drop kicked my expectations into the blue sky, and whispered:
"You thought I was mid? Watch this."
Let’s start with the beginning, the first arc. Is it the best part of the series? Not really. But is it bad? Also no. The episodes introducing the Top 10 Heroes felt like a solid appetizer before a full-course anime feast. Each episode gave you just enough to care about these heroes, let’s be honest, could have easily been…

The animation is usually fantastic, and the music is very solid.
With the good out of the way, let's get started.
The characters are fine. Lots of them have interesting-ish backstories, but unfortunately, due to the pseudo-anthology nature of the show, very few of these characters get a chance to shine, and even then (e.g. with the first arc) I still leave feeling that the storylines were rushed and focus was put on hype moments rather than character moments. Additionally, some of the characters just get done dirty. The first arc again comes to mind with rather egregious instances of treating women poorly writing-wise.
The power system, like everything else with this show, has promise at first. It's a unique idea, and the way it's played up in the first two arcs leaves you wanting to le…

I will eternally be grateful to To Be Hero X for opening my eyes to the world of Donghua. I had honestly written Chinese animation off, but I decided to give this a chance and I am so glad I did. It has been one of the best live viewing experiences of my life. Not only is there not a single dull moment in this show, but every single character introduced makes you want to root for them. It’s one of the best ever battle royale style set ups and combines amazing production values with a captivating narrative. If you like action, superheroes, twists(a TON of them), multifaceted and complex characters who aren’t always perfect and stories where the author isn’t afraid to kill people off look no further, TBHX has it all.
The really cool thing about TBHX is that it has so many different charact…
