I've read some of the reviews on this little 80s OVA gore fest and having watched it for myself, I honestly don't think it deserves the hate it's received. Not to say that it's one of the greatest animes to come out of the OVA boom of the 80s.
Beginning in 1987 and being the sole directorial work of Hiroaki Oogami, Maryuu Senki a.k.a. Evil Dragon War Chronicles is pretty much your typical ultra violence title of the OVA boom ment to push the boundaries of what television broadcast standards would deem unacceptable. It's an anime that would have been easy pickings for western anime distributors of the early 90s such as the UK's Manga Entertainment, who were mostly looking for anything involving sex and violence that they could market to Britain's Beer & Curry crowd.
In other words, teenage…

In my perspective, this anime lacks coherence and fails to establish a strong narrative foundation. To begin with, the story stats with a seemingly random scene that bears no relevance to the subsequent chapters. The characters are unengaging, with an absence of substantial context regarding their identities, occupations, or the underlying motivations of the antagonists and protagonists. This results in a perplexing viewing experience. Personally, I found no enjoyment in this anime at any point, and I am uncertain how I managed to endure it in its entirety. Each episode appears disjointed, resembling disparate tales that fail to interconnect logically.
One noteworthy aspect worth mentioning is the character design, particularly that of the antagonist who bears a striking resemblance to a…

WARNING: THIS OVA NOT SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!
Do you like copious amounts of random gore and sex? Literal essays of text to read explaining pointless lore and worldbuilding? Did I mention all the mindless gore and sex?
If this doesn't appeal to you, or if you don't like being bored beyond belief while watching media, Maryuu Senki is not for you.
The 1980s and 1990s are filled with OVAs no human being should ever watch -- content so mindless and boring it's hard to imagine there was ever a target audience for it. This is another one of those, and it's not particularly remarkable among them. The characters are all flat and boring -- new ones appear and disappear on screen, and most of them really don't seem to matter. The plot is chaotic and confusing and basically feels like a vessel…

Dont come here expecting much in terms of story, its mediocre.
It doesnt help that whoever subbed this was too lazy and decided to ignore the giant wall of text in the beggining of the anime, which I can only assume is a shit ton of lore/context.
On the other hand, this delivers eveything I expected to:
-Cool demons and awesome fights
-Great animation and 80s character desgins
-Overflowing levels of 80s cheese, which I absolutely love. Then ending was also a bit unexpected and kind of sad, but good enough.
Bottom line is: If all you want is an 80s ultraviolent ova with good animation, this one has you covered.
