Black Torch

Introduction

Capable of communicating with animals, Jirou Azuma, a troublesome 17-year-old high school student, is constantly scolded by his grandfather for fighting humans that harm his winged and four-legged friends. However, after Jirou saves a black cat named Ragou from certain death, his carefree existence soon comes to an end. Unbeknownst to Jirou, Ragou is no ordinary cat but a mononoke, a magical creature of immense power. While trying to protect Ragou from another mononoke, Jirou is easily defeated and left for dead. In a dramatic turn of events, Ragou decides to pay off his debt to the dying young man, making Jirou a rare human-mononoke hybrid that easily overpowers his aggressor. Unfortunately, Jirou is now sought by both Ragou's kin who want to use the latter's powers, and the Bureau of Espionage, a secret governmental organization protecting civilians against hostile mononoke. Forcibly enlisted by the Bureau of Espionage's Ryousuke Shiba, Jirou must prove his worth in a new anti-mononoke task force, lest he be killed as a menace himself. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

At first, I was surprised that they made an anime adaptation of a canceled manga with only a few chapters, even though there are so many other underrated and forgotten works out there. I’m not going to lie—that’s what made me watch this series. The main character in black torch The main character, Jiro, reminds me of classic shonen works; I’m not surprised by his inexplicable strength and reckless stupidity. The Mononoke who help jirou The series explains a bit about the Mononoke, and this is the first time I’ve learned about them—maybe because I don’t watch much anime. From what I understand, they’re similar to jinn in our beliefs, and I didn’t see any particular differences, especially regarding the concept of possession, their invisibility, and how to deal with them—particularly w…

Wasted opportunity. The idea of the show seems very cool, an elite human team that fights Mononoke, humans with special abilities and mononoke displaying all kinds of crazy magic, but is hugely underdeveloped. The humans don't really show of many abilities, they are basically strong and fast, with some high tech, they should have some cool powers. The plot is rushed, they basically go against the big evil in 12 episodes, this is maybe due to the new format in anime nowadays, that left so little room for developing stories well. The drawing looks pretty nice, but there's barely any animation, in fights don't expect to see connecting moves or anything amazing. I don't know why they picked this one up to do a series, the manga is cancelled and I do not see any room to create a more interesti…

The fact that this show exists at all is a pretty special deal: an anime adaptation of a monthly manga series that got canceled after 17-ish chapters. Its writing is pretty comparable, if a little better than a lot of those serializations that got canned, but maybe for me it has a little more charm since I know this series is a pretty special case. I will say, though, there was a certain point where I can definitely tell when watching that, "Ohhhh, this is probably when they told the author that things weren't going to pan out and to pull the plug," when it comes to how Amagi is being written, since he got shifted from "main villain status" to "needing to be defeated now since serialization is ending." The exact moment I felt this was when they introduced him eating allies for a boost; th…

This anime is really good—don't let those low scores fool you. It just amazes me that an anime of this caliber is considered inferior to *Boku no Hero* and *Jujutsu*; I mean, it’s truly so different watching a kid with no powers cleaning up a beach—wow, how incredible! The kinetic action and stylistic execution by 100studio deserve far more credit. Jiro Azuma is an incredibly refreshing protagonist; his deep background as a shinobi combined with the supernatural bond he shares with Rago gives the series a highly distinct flavor that sets it completely apart from typical mainstream shonen. Instead of relying on tired, predictable tropes or dragged-out tournament arcs, the narrative remains lean, punchy, and consistently engaging. The animation during the intense mononoke battles is breathta…

cool f*cking concept, great protagonist energy, and a story tripping over its own feet ✨ THE GOOD: well fellas monkey boy overhere came to threw some hands the mc jirou is the biggest reason this shit works not an asshole energy but badass in a sense ,fun to watch the supernatural side is also f*cking cool yokai, exorcists, animal spirits, weird abilities it's a damn shonen for god sake with a GODDAMN!? art ⚡ THE “WAIT, THIS COULD ACTUALLY BE FIRE” ENERGY: a legit setup , a shonen idiot mc who can communicate with animals gets his feet wet into a supernatural conflict after meeting an ancient ninja cat? yes give me that sh*t it has that early-Jump decent energy 🙄 THE “BRO, SLOW THE F*CK DOWN” PROBLEM: plot moves like it knows someone is holding a cancellation notice it keeps throwin…

Black Torch really surprised me. From the action, supernatural elements, and the overall atmosphere, this anime gave me strong Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man vibes. I really enjoyed the combination of dark supernatural battles, interesting characters, and intense action. The story has that modern shonen feeling where things can suddenly become serious, while still keeping the characters entertaining. The biggest thing that stood out to me was the vibe. It feels familiar if you enjoy Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man, but it still has its own identity and potential. The battles are exciting, and I especially like the concept behind the supernatural powers and the relationship between the characters. For me, Black Torch is definitely an anime worth watching, especially if you're a fan of da…

Black Torch is pretty much the poster child for mid. Just another generic 2 guys/1 girl trio battle shonen. Mid plot, mid villain, mid battles, just all around a bland show. The plot moves too fast and nothing is really explained very well. None of the characters are particularly unique or interesting and they’re honestly all forgettable by the end. There is a concrete ending, but there’s also a lot of plot points that are not cleared up or are left unfinished. Not bad, not good, just kind of…. there. If you want something to watch without having to invest a lot of thought or don’t want to get too invested, Black Torch is that anime.

This is probably one of the most generic and cliché Shonen anime you could ask for. It seemed interesting at first, and I genuinely thought it might become something enjoyable, but the sheer amount of generic writing quickly became unbearable. The story is ass, and the characters aren’t much better. The character development is weak, and most of the cast feels bland, predictable, and forgettable. There’s nothing particularly interesting about their personalities or relationships, and the plot constantly relies on clichés we’ve already seen countless times in other Shonen anime. The art style and animation might honestly be the only things this anime has going for it. Overall, it’s pretty boring and forgettable.

This show is a unicorn of sorts. Normally when a show is poorly paced it's because there's little to no progress in individual episodes. They went the other way with this one. Everything progressed so quickly that zero relationships developed, but somehow they were all tight at the end. The emotional investment wasn't just lacking with the other characters though. It was also like that overall with the story. The MC is a super good fighter and gets powers right off the bat. We don't get to see why. It's like a novel with pages ripped out. It's super poorly written. The story was clearly inspired by Naruto and the writer was obviously trying to emulate the high adrenaline berserk moments and other elements, but the writer seems to not understand why those moments were so exciting in Narut…

It’s incredible how Black Torch manages to move so quickly that it feels like everything is being crammed in, yet also somehow manages to accomplish nothing in 12 episodes. This anime was marketed to seem like it was about a guy who can talk to animals and his magical cat companion - pretty cool premise. The whole “talking to animals” thing has relevance for maybe half an episode of runtime combined and makes little sense in the context of the actual plot. Disappointing. So what did we get instead of a shonen version of Dr. Doolittle? A poor man’s JJK. It reminds me of Tougen Anki’s shallowness, but instead of disturbingly-large boobs it just focuses on one female character’s ass for several shots. I think Ichika’s butt was given more screen time and development than Ichika herself. I’…

The show is fairly decent, and overall good, but not great. It feels like there's a lot of wasted potential. The MC is a ninja who can talk to animals, but after the first couple of episodes, he never uses those ninja abilities ever again. I kept expecting him to take a 'fatal' blow, only to have it hit a log or something like that (which is something we see him demonstrate an equivalent ability in the first episode or two), but it never comes up again - he's just a powerhouse with none of the art or skill he started the series with. Still, overall it isn't a BAD show, it just isn't a great one.

This might be the worst anime I’ve ever seen—and I’ve watched a lot of questionable stuff over the years. The anime copies the beginning of *Chainsaw Man* but only its worst aspects; the background details fail to engage you because everything is just too simplistic. The supporting characters are irrelevant, and their story arcs have zero impact on the plot. The only supporting character who actually matters is Ichika, and she’s only relevant because they try to shoehorn in fanservice every time she appears—and even that is poorly executed. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone; it embodies every negative trait of the shows we’ve seen lately without a single redeeming quality. You simply won't care about it. The protagonist's training isn't shown, and the resolution is crammed into a singl…

The anime is not all that special and feels like your typical shonen/action series. It starts off with a more original premise: the main character can talk to animals. This makes him unique and gives him a different perspective from others. However, after the first couple of episodes, the anime completely forgets about this and becomes all about the power of friendship again. It is a shame because the show could have been much more than that. The pacing of the story is generally good. It can feel a little rushed at times, but this keeps the series feeling light and easy to watch. As for the ending, many questions are left unanswered, which leaves the door wide open for a second season. Fortunately, it doesn't finish on a massive cliffhanger, so you can safely watch it without the frustrat…

Well, I decided to watch Black Torch out of curiosity about how an anime adaptation of an axed manga would look, and to say the least I understand why it was axed. It just progressively became less and less enjoyable to watch with each new episode. If you've seen my review for Season 2 of Wistoria, this review will be quite similar, except I think Black Torch was much worse. Art Style/Character Designs - 8.5 Animation - 8 Pacing - 3 Characters - 5 Story - 5 Comedy - 3 Music/OP/ED - 7 Enjoyment - 4 The visuals for this anime were quite good. I liked the character designs and although the art style wasn't too unique I still thought it looked good. The animation also was pretty good, however the use of CGI was not. But on the bright side of things the CGI was infrequent so it wasn't too much…

God, this show is awful. Watching this weekly is such a miserable experience. Every episode gave me this sense of dread where four minutes in I would already be wondering why I was still doing this to myself. If I had discovered the series after it finished airing and tried to binge all twelve episodes at once, I am almost certain I would have dropped it. I genuinely do not think I could stomach this level of boredom, predictability, and unoriginal writing in one sitting. You would think this kind of generic shonen/B-movie action slop would at least be easy to consume. Somehow, it is the opposite. Something this shallow should be effortless background entertainment, yet every week I found it increasingly difficult to digest. There has already been plenty of discourse surrounding the serie…

Pretty bad anime overall. Character development is awful. The characters are all forgettable. The protagonist lacks charisma and feels like a poorly written Ichigo. I can't even remember the names of the comrades. All so generic and tedious. The fights are meh; you won't remember even one. The enemies are also really boring. The story evolves so fast that nothing has any impact. His "training session" in the forest didn't last even one episode. We didn't get to see the training or anything. I can barely write on this one since it feels like there is nothing to write about. Everything felt so rushed and generic that it will probably be forgotten in a few days.

As a casual shonen enjoyer, I really enjoyed the show. The show has many good sides despite the fact that it was based on an axed manga. Firstly, the opening and ending song choice was phenomenal. It went perfectly with the show. The next good thing about the show is the sound mixing and sound effects. It almost gives a JoJo like feel. Also the animation should get appreciation as well. It doesn't have that fluidity of modern shows but it's quite vibrant and have decent motion. The CGI usage was good and mixed perfectly into the animation. The action sequence and fight choreography were actually good. Last but not the least, the character designing (specially the female characters). The animation studio was really true to the source material. They didn't simplify any characters to co…

Move over, Jujutsu Kaisen, because... Oh, wait, there's more? Move over Naruto, Black Clover, Blue Exorcist, and... okay, okay! Maybe Black Torch isn't exactly the most original show that aired this season. But it is also by no means the worst. So what if it takes a lot of inspiration from its predecessors? Plenty of other shows do that as well, and I don't see them getting nearly as much flak! And you know what? Black Torch is fun. Black Torch is so, so much fun. It's a stylish, energetic, and hype show that knows exactly what it is, and takes full advantage of that. But all that being said, let's get into the review already so I can tell you just why Black Torch is worth your time! Visuals: Easily one of the most surprising parts of this show by far (in a good way). I was expecting the…

Welp, that's that. Overall, this was an underwhelming anime. Visually, it's really good. The character designs are good, and the animation is really well done, especially the fight animation. The animation during the fight scenes are of top quality, and are easily the highlights of the anime. The plot is solid, but at the same time, it feels like a generic Shounen anime, and the characters are no better, especially the three main leads. Jiro is your brash protagonist with a rough yet endearing personality, Reiji is the rival with the polar opposite personality of the protagonist who he consistently butt heads with, and just so happens to have a traumatic backstory that involves taking vengeance on someone from their past, and Ichika is the girl of the group who is meant to be the voice o…

Black Torch is based on an axed manga, but the first half of the season still feels surprisingly fresh and enjoyable. Especially during those early episodes, the story has a clear direction and a steady pace that makes it feel like the series knows exactly where it wants to go. Unfortunately, that changes during the second half. The story suddenly starts progressing much faster. important developments happen in a much shorter amount of time and the overall pacing begins to feel rushed. Because of that, the story also loses a lot of the quality and momentum it had at the beginning. Considering how short the original manga ended up being, it feels less like the story was originally supposed to progress this quickly and more like the author simply didn't have enough time to properly develop…
