Space Battleship Yamato

Space Battleship Yamato

Introduction

After a devastating campaign by the planet Gamillas, Earth has been reduced to a shadow of its former self. Between countless exchanges between human and Gamillan spacecraft and an intense bombardment from asteroid bombs, Earth's surface has been rendered completely barren and uninhabitable. The few surviving humans hide in underground cities, terrified that the radiation plaguing the planet's surface will eventually penetrate their living area. When all hope seems lost, a strange craft crashes on Mars. Inside is a message from the planet Iscandar—if humanity can successfully utilize the enclosed blueprints for a wave motion engine and make the 148,000 light-year journey to Iscandar, their leader, Starsha, will provide them with a device that can restore Earth's natural environment. With no other options, humanity pours all of its strength into the daring plan. Repurposing the once-magnificent World War II battleship Yamato into a space battleship with warp capability, an elite crew sets out on a desperate mission to save their dying planet. This film is actually just a recap of the original 1974 series (and therefore a montage of sequences from the series). Its sole purpose is to offer the same story but condensed into just over two hours. For this review, I will focus not on the story of the original series, which is great, but simply on whether the film fulfills its role as a summary. The movie begins quite well with a first quarter that takes its time (although it's obviously a…

Since this is a recap movie, this review and the one I made about the full series will have some similarities. Story : 9/10 The plot is quite simple and any person with a functioning brain should be able to follow it. The Earth is being bombed by the Gamilas Empire, an alien humanoid civilization with superior technology, that aims to submit humanity and colonize the planet. The bombings have covered the surface of the Earth with toxic raditation and humans are forced to live in underground cities. Humanity is on the verge of extinction. To remove the radiations and to fight with the aliens on equal footing, humanity turns a WW2 japanese battleship (the Yamato) into a poweful space battleship and sends it into space to obtain a radiation removing machine from Sarsha, an alien woman livi…
