Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Introduction

Middle school student Mirai Onozawa is dissatisfied with her family circumstances and, in a moment of frustration, wishes to tear everything apart. Unfortunately, these destructive thoughts seem to come true in the form of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake just a few moments later. When summer vacation begins, Mirai reluctantly takes her younger brother Yuuki to Odaiba, where a robot exhibition that he wanted to go to is being held. However, while they are in the exhibition center, the fury of a major earthquake shakes the Kanto region; helpless, both kids witness the devastating power of this natural disaster as it brings the city to its knees. In its aftermath, they stumble upon Mari Kusakabe, a motorcyclist and single mother who decides to help the young siblings. Aiming to return to their homes and reunite with their families, the group sets off on a long and hard journey through the decimated city. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

This is an absolute masterpiece. Even if you've watched this anime before, I'd recommend watching it again even if you know how it's going to go. 100% worth it. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 pulls the rug out from under you. It begins as a survival story, and ends with a more psychological tone. One's mind can really get messed up in such circumstances and this anime displays that brilliantly. I love how death is not hidden away or dumbed down, just shown realistically and with respect. The brutality of natural disaster is shown, with some stunning background artwork and also through the themes of the story. You truly want to root for each character. I also like how this anime is constantly contrasting the small 'every day' inconveniences against massive, life-destroying problems. It really shows…

In my opinion, this is a hidden gem. Would never hear about it if it wasn't for the Awards Winning anime category on this website, and oh boy, was this a journey I was caught without notice. It is a story that was inspired by multiple simulations of what would happen if an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 would hit Tokyo, as I guess you already understood by the title, and it follows a sister from 7th grade, her little brother from 3rd grade and an initially stranger that also has a daugher (but not with her) trying to go back to their homes which are in the same area. I will start with talking about the characters, as this is what I feel like the anime is big on, besides the tragedy. This story has a LOT of deep things regarding the problems a middle school age kid would have, and even if th…

It's just so boring. It started out interesting depicting a middle school girl in a rebellious age where she is very cynical about life. She's contantly talking about how she doesn't want to do things, and is on her phone all the time. She has a younger brother who is very positive, making her feel like an asshole for being short with him all the time. After the earthquake, even after going through so much she keeps the cynical/negative attitude way too long. In addition, the pacing became really slow. This show is only 11 episodes, but it could have been half that from what I can tell. Just a lot of side stuff that isn't that interesting/new. I actually dropped it at episode 6, but when reading a review of the special, which is just a shortened recap(maybe worth watching instead), it spo…

What could've made this one amazing? A girl and her brother are stuck far away from their home, while an 8.0 series of earthquakes hits Japan. It's such a simple premise, but instantly something I gravitate towards. Think on the potential for a survival story, for a real questioning of people's morals, and a true analysis of the state of society upon a true, natural cataclysm. However, the series chose to be too hopeful. I'm not one to desire only horrors unleashed on a series that attempts to be hopeful. It's okay if what it wants to tell, is about the good in people, in how petty problems don't matter much in the midst of a natural disaster, or bigger problems than a sibling's fight. Sadly, I couldn't buy into the story that much. Most of the concerns come from the pacing, and how dra…

I have always loved visual works that are based on true stories. In my opinion, the story had unnecessary parts that should've been shortened, but considering that 11 episodes are not that many to look at it from this POV. I loved the visuals, the art style, the animation, the scenarios, and almost everything. It does not reach the rating of 10,9 or 8 out of 10 so the proper rating of it is around 6.5-7.5/10 but what made me rate it this high is the amazing plot twist at the end of the show. The storyline is unique depending on what animes I have watched till the moment of this review, I really recommend it.

Thought this show would be interesting as it had a solid premise and a good overall score (it was at an 8 at the time of this review). Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. I feel like there’s so much they could of shown when it comes to what life is like after a major earthquake, but instead the show decides for the two child leads to have awful communication skills and just leave the group whenever they feel like it which would then lead to 5 minutes of the person/people left behind looking for them. This is pretty much all that happens in the show. It almost seems like the writers knew that the show sucked so in the final few episodes they make an interesting decision, and while I won’t spoil anything, I feel like what they did felt incredibly forced (and also just happened out of now…

I remember seeing Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 in 2009, right as it came out. I loved it. But this was before I started writing reviews, so I couldn't put my thoughts down on it. But it definitely cemented itself on the number four spot on my top favorite anime of all time, and it's definitely NOT easy for an anime to leave an impact on me like that. But then I wondered if this great show would ever get licensed or even dubbed. I figured, since it was so underrated and underappreciated, it'd either go unlicensed forever or just get a subbed release. But then, in 2013, it was announced that it was getting an English dub! You won't believe how hard I cheered when I read that piece of news on Anime News Network. Yay! I convinced my dad to order the DVD set for me for my birthday, but even though I had…

Okay, I've never written a review before but I had to. The first half of this series was AMAZING! It chilled me to the bone, it warmed my heart, it made tears pour down my face like no other anime before it and I could not stop watching, I just loved it. A certain scene about half way through really leads the audience on and causes great emotional distress for the main character and feel really cheap and really unnecessary. The worst case is presented, but then everything was resolved. I hate that, but it was forgivable. But, then the show began to drag for me and I ended up skipping longer and longer portions of episodes because everything was being resolved and there wasn't much danger or tension left. I got bored. THEN. The last two episodes absolutely RUINED it for me. The worst and…

Very good anime but sad at the same time ... This anime reflects what Japan suffered in an earthquake that hit its cities, killing thousands of people but does not emphasize it with a girl as the protagonist. The anime is very well told, seriously and with that "touch" that characterizes anime. Leaving all this aside, it should be emphasized that it is a sad anime, it will bring a few tears to you throughout the chapters (so prepare the kleenex haha). In conclusion, it is highly recommended if you want to see an anime themed about events that happened in real life, I give it 9 out of 10. Español Muy buen anime pero triste a la vez... Este anime refleja lo que sufrió Japón en un terremoto que azotó sus ciudades, matando a miles de personas pero no lo enfatiza con una chica como protagonis…

Tokyo magnitude 8.0 one of my top 10 anime of all time. This anime it's so good before i watch this my expectation it's so low for this Anime. But it turns out into a very great Anime 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: For story i think it's gonna be so relate for those people who ever feel that situation. The feel in this anime its feel so real and very emotional. It's feel so realistic like this Anime is based on true story. But i think the story it's slowy turning to very dramatic so i doesn't feel sad anymore after the 4th earthquake. 9/10 𝗔𝗿𝘁: To be honest i really like the Art, like it's so good. But sometimes i think the character design and the world building design in this anime it's to weird. But overall i still like the art style from Bones. 8/10 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿: Character? I have to say the…

This is not a natural disaster anime, simply a story about an emo teenage girl (Mirai) and her brother (Yuuki) trying to find their way home. The art is average, music is average, the storyline is average, but it somehow touched my heart. The name of the characters - Mirai 未来, means future - Yuuki 勇気, means courage You'll understand why once you watch it. You'll come to realise the daily routines that you hate so much, pray to be destroyed, are so precious. Quote Ep 1 opening: この町が嫌い、家が嫌い、 親も、親に怒られるものが嫌い、 。。何もかも いっそう壊れちゃえばいい "Tomorrow" is a word full of hope, While you have "tomorrow", please buy your loved one round birthday cake ^^ PS: "You will always live in my heart" is overused, I guess they're trying to say that the real death is when the last person on Earth who knows you…

First review (comments and criticism welcome) Story (8/10) Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 follows the events of two siblings and a mother (not related) as they make their way back home and through the events and aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake, coming in at a whopping 8.0 on the JMA's seismic intensity scale (which caps at 7). Having never been in an earthquake I can't attest to the research and simulation done by the team crafting this hypothetical, but I loved the attention to detail to how the mundane aspects of life were changed and how the people interacted with and responded to those changes. Art (6/10) The art isn't anything to boast about, however I do feel the somewhat realistic character designs were appropriate for the setting. The backgrounds were well constructed. The animatio…

This is an anime about loss/ disaster and the human experience as a natural disaster hits Tokyo. The story follows two siblings as they are caught up in the midst of disaster and follows their journey to get back home... never knowing if home is ok and what actually waits for them. The animes strong points is building vibes and building up your connection with the central characters. And then plunges your emotions on a roller coaster. I wasn't initially sure how they would make 11 episodes out of this as the initial disaster hits very early on. But thats the point. The main focus of this anime, is the human experience, the horrors those left alive have to deal with. The low scores for this anime are fair, its an anime yes it doesn't capture the true horrors of what a real life earthqua…

Overall, this anime was a 7. It was not bad by any means, but not extraordinary. My headspace when starting this show was not a masterpiece, but simply a heartbreaking tale of a group of people weathering the storm and aftermath of an earthquake, a common tale for many when experiencing national disasters. In the end, I got this story, and a bit more as well. The last 3 episodes of this show made me contemplate whether to give this show an 8. Undoubtedly, that twist at the end was something I never envisioned before. It was a slow-burn, heartbreaking revelation that genuinely shocked my core because of its abruptness. It was a masterful twist, and it made me look at this show with a bit more admiration relating to its execution. However, this anime had its faults as well. The main characte…

I am a heartless human. But the last episode of this anime can make me moved (still don't cry tho). They structure the story with the aim of actually making the audience cry and sad. Fortunately your efforts aren't enough. Ha ha! When I first watched this anime, I didn't expect that there would be sad moments. The main character doesn't care about her life (similar to me). The part where she will definitely have a change of nature I guessed. But I still enjoy the show and the characters and of course the story too. When I saw the title of this anime, I imagined a terrible and depressing anime scene. Well my hope about a terrible anime is finished in the last episode of this anime, replaced with emotion and sadness. But it's not bad either and I'm satisfied. Sasuga Slice of Life anime.

So I went into this anime deciding to just watch it through regardless of how I felt about the little things that annoyed me. At the end I found myself appreciating the story for what it was and the emotions that it wanted to convey. It's a decent story that can push your emotions and perfectly in my opinion presents Japanese cinematographic style of trying to capture an audience through their feelings. I can definitely see why people who are not used to this style on storytelling may not like it and it's something that has annoyed me in the past.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is a solid show. Deep insight, I know. Yet I think that simple, lackluster statement sums up this anime pretty well. This might sound more harshly critical than I actually feel, but here goes. It's a show that relies upon two things to stand out from the crowd: an interesting premise and and an emotional twist late in the series. It doesn't do anything offensively wrong, it engages the viewer fairly well throughout its 11 episode run, and the later episodes hit exactly as hard as (if not harder than) I was hoping. The ending is strong, the overhanging tensions of the show are resolved fairly well, and I came out of the show pretty contented with the experience (and emotionally wrecked, of course). There's one nagging issue I keep coming back to, however. Most of the s…

I do have to hand it to this anime, not only are the consistent but also amazing attention to detail. Multiple times did i cry at this anime, the story tellers really know how to tug at the heartstrings and how to keep you paying attention. There were a lot of points in which things were a little too convenient or coincidental however I can fully say this story line is not only an amazing break from the harems and fantasy thrown at us but also well written and wonderfully executed. I love how the style is similar to a Studio Ghibli's style which really made me hope that things would go happy go lucky and selling the innocence and child-like hope that Yuuki has. The level to detail is so INSANE. I was going to rate it lower but as soon as I saw episodes 8-11 I realized how detailed they…

I read a few reviews about this anime and the responses were always mixed. Some liked it, some didn't. So instead of trusting reviews for once, I went into this bilnd. And I'm so glad I did. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is, while introduced as a simulation of a giant earthquake hitting Tokyo, lied about one thing: it's a simulation. More specifically, realistic simulation. This might come off as negative, but read onward and you'll see what I mean. This show lied to the viewers by hiding what its true message was. It's not "tragedies happen" or "we must work together to survive". Instead, it's a message that everyone, going through a tough time or not, goes through grief. And we all have our own ways of coping. By simulation, this series was not talking about the simulation of an earthquake and…
