I've recently been struck by a wave of nostalgia for a classic Shonen Jump story in Yu-Gi-Oh! and decided it would be a good idea to cross this early days adaptation off my bucket list. (Also because I'm struggling to find subbed episodes of the successor anime that focuses on card dueling). Since this was never officially localized, expect subtitles only and low visual quality. However, the age wasn't what bothered me about the anime. It was how it handled the adapting the source material.
For those out of the loop, Yu-Gi-Oh! began as a semi dark story for a Shonen manga, filled with games of life and death in retribution of ne'er-do-wells. A high schooler (despite his size) completes an Egyptian puzzle that gives him a dark alter ego with expert level game skills. The series would eventu…

The curious Yu-Gi-Oh! before it became "the anime of the cards".
Yu-Gi-Oh!, often called "Yu-Gi-Oh! Zero" by fans, is the first adaptation of Kazuki Takahashi's manga. And those who come here expecting something similar to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters will probably be surprised… or even frustrated.
That's because this version is much closer to the original idea of the manga at the beginning: varied games, psychological challenges, and dark punishments, instead of focusing exclusively on the card game. The "card battles" do exist, but they are far from being the center of the work. Here, the concept is broader and, in many moments, much stranger and even heavier than what became popular later.
The protagonist Yugi Muto remains the same shy boy, but the real highlight is his other personalit…

WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE CRAZY HAIR IN THIS ANIME??
Man, I really like how this anime delivers its ideas. Maybe that’s why it’s so fun. But even beyond that, the anime kind of turns into a jigsaw-style survival game. Like, in the first episode, Yugi’s edgy side just straight up kills a guy out of nowhere?? AMAZING introduction, though I wish that side of Yugi showed up more often, because in the end it turns into something like, "yeahh let’s win with the power of friendship."
The story? Very well written, and it manages to stay on track without getting lost or becoming tiresome. Sure, it has its fair share of character and plot clichés—without those, it wouldn’t really be a kids’ show, right? But even that works well with the formula it follows: introduce a bad guy, bad guy has to play a Sh…

Somehow I've never seen this until now! Yu-Gi-Oh was one of my favorite things in the world growing up, so of course I've known about Season 0's existence. It wound up being a lot more fun than I expected it to be! I've always loved the casual banter the characters had in between the card game segments in the main show, and Season 0 is just jam-packed with that, which I loved! I've always heard people say this show was SUPER DARK, but no. It's such a silly and wacky show that I absolutely can see myself loving as a kid if they had ever released it over here. It's also short, too. So it doesn't feel like a slog to get through, like the main series (despite how much I love it) can be at times. It was fun to see a wide variety of games besides Duel Monsters, Joey was super cool in this series…

Watching this anime as an adult gave me very good feelings.
I knew the story through the sequel to this anime (as did most, I imagine) and, when watching its precursor, I expected something different, but I ended up having a very pleasant surprise.
Yu-Gi-Oh! It was a light and pleasant experience, as well as extremely nostalgic. I loved following the high school slice-of-life of Yugi and his gang. Although most of the story is filler, episodic and predictable, something kept me very happy while watching. I don't believe it was the original idea for the anime, but everything here sounded funny, even with a satirical tone, which made me really appreciate the anime's lack of quality. A lack of quality that I also overlook due to its airing period. They were defects in narratives that are no…

Yugioh season 0 is a wonderful anime to watch even if you never cared about the modern card games. Season 0 is a fun pace show with various degrees of engagement that will quench that thirst of wanting something interesting to watch.
The main cast is very lovable, and the situations that unfold around them are just as interesting in this anime depicting the contrast of good and evil ethics.
By using an element of a game, this show is able to tackle the two together in a surprisingly good philosophical digest, food for thought.
Season 0, by itself, is a fun 20+ series where you often see various situational dramas, sometimes depicting real life scenarios, and the punchline of the ethically brave characters triumphing over counter evils, whether its in a societal topic, a personal topic,…

I remember watching this in high school and having fond memories of it, one night just binging it with a buddy who'd stayed the night.
It's rough around the edges and it's a bit different than the rest of the Yugioh series: being the OG it's a lot darker in tone which adds to the appeal. The focus in general is less on the card game itself and more on the Millennium Puzzle and everything else having to do with it. In addition, the characters are slightly different than if one has come into this from having watched any of the others in terms of their personalities and character design.
The opening "A Yell of Thirst" (渇いた叫び, Kawaita Sakebi) by FIELD OF VIEW also exists as a nice contrast between itself and the tone of Yu-Gi-Oh "Season Zero". Overall it's an enjoyable show. It's not perfec…

It was a decent season of Yu-Gi-oh!, from here on onward Yu-Gi-Oh starts. Disappointed that there were not many duel battles in the series, but other types of games were introduced a lot during the season. The character development was decent, art style and animation was also decent as it aired in the 90s. I liked some episodes and others were also decent, I enjoyed the MC and his friends. This series aside gaming shows us the importance of friendship.
What I liked about the series is the MC and the duel game which is played and his smartness also.
I give this series 6/10.

So entertaining! Yugioh Season 0 was really entertaining! Lets get into the story, apart from the beginning episodes to form the story: the premise is just each episode Yami Yugi has to kick some poor fucker's ass (probably due to them beating up regular Yugi or Jounchi) in the Shadow Games, it's obviously the typical monster of the week format, but each episode is real entertaining, with Yami Yugi playing unique games with an opponent each episode that varies from a card game, a game of plucking roses, or even being transferred into D&D, and much more. In later episodes, there's even a mini-arc called "Duelest Kingdom" playing against Kaiba and his company, following after that is battling against Bakura which, again, is really entertaining. But, there's an unresolved plot point with an E…

*This Anime is 22 years of as of 2020, there should be no issue with spoilers due to its age alone. I do talk about the changes from the Manga and Anime that I did not agree with. I also briefly talk about the D-Tower Arch and the change I did not agree with (basically, my reasoning for the scores I gave it). Read at your risk for spoilers.*
Yu-Gi-Oh!, other wised known as Season 0, is a unique product of its time. I came across this series while surfing the young YouTube and fell in love with it's darker setting, story telling and style. Even though I love it, it's not perfect and has a few flaws as a series.
It takes a huge departure from the original Manga (which I have read prior to the Anime and it is to be expected with any adaptation) by changing and adding to the stories and cha…

I just finished rewatching it after 2-3 years and its actually pretty solid.Changed my score from 6 to 8.
As much as I enjoyed duel monsters becuase it is literally my childhood,I gotta say I liked the idea of unique games in each episode. It made the show exciting although there wasn't an actual plot. It's more like bad guy shows up Yami defeats him and gives him hell.
Also it is much much darker than Duel Monsters(especially the 4kids dub version)as this season includes scenes such as Yami burning a criminal or leaving Kaiba paralysed and in a freakin comma.
To end my review as for the music and the art:
The art was the same as Duel Monsters and I can say that I enjoyed the OP song and the ED song as well

Well what can i say about this series is that was very good.
The series has little to no changes based on the manga only the inclusion of one character (Miho) besides that not many changes ocurred
Is practically the Yugi Oh that we knew and loved my recomendation for people is that first read the manga after that you will notices that there isn't much of a change and wasn't boring since everything changed with each episode it wasn't like duel monsters that was duel and duel and duel and duel to the point it became boring while duel monster had better animation it wasn't nearly as entertaining as this one.
This series deserves a remake with the animation style shown on Dark Side of Dimensions specially with anzu since she got changed for duel monster same as Yugi grandpa

Yu-Gi-Oh! 0 was indeed an anime that surprised me, I loved the duel monsters edition to the series, and so I thought that this original adaption might dissapoint me, guess If I was wrong. I litterately struggled to keep myself from finishing this anime in one go. I will be writing a spoilerless review.
Yu-Gi-Oh! 0 is the very first original anime in the following Yu-Gi-Oh! series. This anime was the first one made, however due to this anime containing several elements not to appropriate for children it was never aired outside of japan. I can also see why, many of these elements were far from for something you should show in a G rated series, However this is an anime you wouldn't want to miss out on.
Indeed, This anime was nothing like I had expected it to be. When you see the other versi…

Amazingly fun and enjoyable. At first the events do not revolve around a central plot, which is partly negative (since the first episodes, except the first, can be considered "unnecessary"), and partly positive (because those very first episodes end up being independent and very fun).
It's also interesting to see how Yami Yugi is presented, and how the other characters see him, always seeing him as the same Yugi as ever, just with more confidence. It was kind of sad that they did not attach so much importance to his past as Pharaoh the way they later did in Duel Monsters. One thing Yugioh Zero sins on, in my opinion, is about character evolution, since almost everyone has no personality change or maturation from start to finish (except for Jonouchi, which shows remarkable evolution at the…

So you think you know YuGiOh? Likely, you started out watching the YGO Duel Monsters dub on TV, then watched the Japanese version and saw how much stuff had been left out in order to make the series more kid friendly for the US. Having done that, you might think you have the whole story.
What if I told you that there was another series, totally different from DM, even though it's set in Domino and has the exact same characters? You'd say I'm either lying or crazy! I don't blame you.
However, this series does in fact exist! In 1998, two years before DM was adapted into an anime, the studio Toei adapted the first set of YGO manga into an anime, known simply as YuGiOh, sometimes called Season Zero or Shadow/Dark Games by avid watchers.
Everyone is there: Yugi, Jounouchi, Honda, Anzu, Kaiba…

I've decided to nostalgia trip a little bit on Yu Gi Oh! duel monsters, a show I grew up watching after school and realized that I did not ever see the actual first season (King of Games otherwise known as Season Zero). Likely for good reason, if this "King of games" season was what I was first exposed to of the franchise, I'd have a hard time believing the Duel Monsters season would be worth watching because at times this show was laughable.
With all the censorship 4kids had done on the franchise I can't even imagine how they would even present this up to their standards. Yugi gets beat up seemingly every second episode among other tricky subject matter to get around. I also feel like the card games profit would have suffered initially just because of the nature of this show was again la…

(Breakdown of my ratings below)
Colloquially known as Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 0, this show loosely follows the plot of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, which was actually a horror series that focused on villain-of-the-week stories and all manner of games, not just Duel Monsters. Yami Yugi is a dark, imposing figure here, who doles out punishment games to anyone who wrongs him, shattering their psyche and leaving them a shadow of their former selves.
Your enjoyment of this show will almost entirely hinge on your feelings towards the rest of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. If you love Yu-Gi-Oh!, there's probably at least some entertainment to be gained from this show for you. To someone like me, who's been a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan their whole life, it's incredibly charming. If you hate Yu-Gi-Oh!, you probably won'…

Watch this show only for the novelty of it being the OG series for Yugioh. I wouldn't recommend this show for someone who isn't already a fan of Yugioh Duel Monsters because in all honesty if you are looking for a great story or great characters or amazing art and sound this isn't the show for you. I would recommend this show for anyone who likes Yugioh Duel monsters to basically see it all started and the inspiration for some of the fights in duel monsters such as the first duel with kaiba to even the final arc of the show. This show is worthwhile for that reason alone. I would also probably someone who likes older 90s shounen as there is a lot of comparisons to be made with the older shounen and this show with some of the battles and the tropes having the feel of older shounen.
The stor…

Children's Card Games Saga Part I: A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far Away, Where Everyone Has Crazy Hair
Well, it's been a long time since I did a nostalgia review, and it took me so long to finish this series due to being unable to find synced audio and video versions of the show, I feel like I can be nostalgic about this show now. (Seriously, I had to quit watching this show for 6 months)
Anyway- so back in 1998, Yugioh was born. Not the 4Kids Yugioh I grew up watching in the early 2000s, but the version that nobody in the US ever saw- what we know as Season 0. Though it sports the Yugioh name, this show and Yugioh Duel Monsters are almost nothing alike- though you can see where many of the ideas for Duel Monsters came from in this- an homage of sorts for the Japanese audience who did se…

Yu Gi Oh
Story/
Let's clear up some confusion. This wasn't the version dubbed by 4kids that you look back on with nostalgic fondness. No, this was the anime BEFORE that. The one that was actually more concerned with adapting the manga source material than selling trading cards.
This Yu-Gi-Oh anime (often called Season 0 because it starts from the beginning) followed the sweet, often bullied Yugi Muto. However, after he solved the millennium puzzle against all odds, and became possessed by a dark entity. This more serious, more confident "Yami Yugi" surfaced whenever normal Yugi came into contact with a cruel human being. Yami Yugi would then challenge the evil person to a game. And here's the kicker: rarely did he suggest a game of cards.
Nope, I got to see a whole sundry of games. And…
