Doukyusei: Classmates

Doukyusei: Classmates

Introduction

Hikaru Kusakabe is a normal, carefree boy in a rock band who is always focused on the present. During the summer, his entire class is forced to participate in an upcoming chorus festival. By coincidence, he discovers his classmate Rihito Sajou—known for being an honor student with excellent grades—practicing his singing alone. Sajou just cannot seem to get their class' song right, and Kusakabe, delighted at seeing a new side of his straight-laced classmate, offers to help him prepare for the event. Although their lives and personalities are total opposites, they begin to grow closer as time progresses. But with the pressure of an unknown future, what will become of them and their growing relationship? [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I watched this movie a long time ago, and the reason I'm only reviewing it now is that back then I was too ashamed that I even watched this garbage that I didn't want to put it in my list. Let me start off by saying I like cute BL stories and this was not that. Shallow characters, no plot, no chemistry, huge consent issues and the most stereotypical bl dynamic you can imagine. It was frustrating, gross and I find it outrageous that this movie is recommended every time someone asks for a cute bl anime recommendation. STOP RECOMMENDING THIS SORRY PIECE OF TRASH TO PEOPLE ALREADY! If you want to watch a cute bl, watch Given (skip the movies tho) or Sasaki to Miyano (if you don't mind some cringe and cheesyness). Otherwise you're better off looking around books, dramas or tv shows instead…

(REWATCH) Happy 10th anniversary to dou kya sei, shoko nakamaura, and to everyone who loves this movie! While the movie was available for limited screenings to celebrate the anniversary I was able to watch it in theatres for the first time. I watched this movie for the first time all those years ago, with 10 years now passing. Watching it in theatre (something I never thought I would experience) was beautiful and felt incredibly full circle for me personally. This movie and its written/drawn counterparts have meant so much to me through time. When I first watched this movie I was almost an entirely different person with a completely different view of the world. My own personal changes in life made me realize while watching this movie in full (which I haven't done in a long-ish time now) a…

It's a soft anime with a unique drawing style. You get used to the drawings after a while, so it's not a big problem; the main issue is the lack of development in the relationships. I think it should have been another half hour; one hour made this anime a bit too forced . They kissed quickly, the first argument, the dating thing, the fight, the breakup... and they left the ending very ambiguous. The fact that we had enough time to see their interactions gave this anime a cold , for me. If you're looking for a quick, easy anime to finish in a flash, you might give it a try!

Tadaima Okaeri was, till now, my favorite one. I discovered it all of a sudden on YouTube. Thanks to whoever did that; otherwise I would have missed this gem. Their due is extremely cute; Sajou and Kusakabe's chemistry is so, so, so lovely. Yet both of them, despite being at that age, showed very mature understanding. Above all, those poems, the environment, and such a warm art style will offer you a romantic, fresh spring vibe. I enjoyed their transitions, how they made their move, how they overcame challenges, and their confidence to withstand upcoming hurdles. To sum up, I have not seen any other school love story, even those typical straight stories, as pretty as this one.

Doukyuusei is a delightful little boys’ love film that might be my favorite so far from a genre I have very little experience with. The less polished, more ethereal character designs, thinner linework, and watercolor-adjacent color palette craft a beautiful tone landing somewhere between serene and fragile, and while it’s not the most ambitiously animated film, its focus on art direction and maintaining the proper mood makes this a more than appropriate tradeoff. While I’m not exactly the target audience for this story, I also can’t deny that it nails its more sensual and erotic moments as well. The bubbling relationship between Kusakabe and Sajou was incredibly sweet, though just as often fraught with the usual issues that come with entering a new relationship and defining when exactly th…

that kiss 8 mins in was the most unnatural thing ever omggg?? and why were they in love in literally 12 minutes? and asking for consent to kiss only to promptly ignore the "no"?? the teacher-student kiss that's only there for added ~drama~? 😭 i'm afraid this just wasn't for me (though they still had some cute scenes, for sure) it's just, overall, quite shallow, in my opinion. there's for sure worse, but i'm sure there's 1000x better stuff out there. regarding the art style: a lot of people really liked it, but i'm clearly in the minority that doesn't think this is that pretty. it's just mediocre at best, in terms of the visuals.

Just a brief, spoiler-free review. Probably one of the very few BL anime that is actually enjoyable for a gay male audience (along with Given). The art is gorgeous and It doesn't have *that* horse face art style (if you know, you know) that seems prevalent in BL nor is everyone presented as hyper feminine. The story is realistic, painfully relatable for anyone having grown up gay, and it never veers into the 'everyone is actually gay!' trope either. It's nice to have a BL that is mostly serious and kind of an emotional journey over the hour. -1 star because there is one creepy ick moment (because there just always has to be, it's a rule of BL apparently).

A very touching story about first true love. This anime delves into romance in a way I too rarely see in anime nowadays. It's pure and true, and remains for the most part free of sexualization which I can't say for many other BLs. It's realistic in its portrayals with its depictions of the struggles of relationships but the resolutions are always healthy and there is no "toxic yaoi" here...Also, its use of metaphors and allegories was really touching to me and it's something I really vallue in any type of media, it adds a depth to it and opens the door for analysis. Overall, it was a really touching story about two people, two men, falling in love with each other that leaves a smile on your face and a singular tear in your eyes. I crave more...

This movie will change you. It is subtle and emotional. They avoid unnecessary drama or explicit scenes, instead, they focus on the subtle nuances of their emotions and the unspoken tension between them. It was not predictable, even tho the synopsis gives a bit of context, it does not prepare us for the beauty that is hidden. THE ANIMATION AAAAAAAAAA, is so delicate. It captures the atmosphere of the anime just right and gives us a sensation of reality that we are not habituated. The characters are not perfect, which brings us to the reality of what is to be a human being, with flaws and also confusion and fear about sexuality. The best in all of it is that it is not a cliché, it is just a simple film that shows how a real relationship builds up throughout time. For BL lovers/fans, "Dou…

Doukyuusei, simple yet elegant The story didn't have the characters figure out there feelings for each other but just had them together in the most beautiful and simplistic way possible. In the most of the bl I have seen this has to be the by far the most elegant storyline I have ever seen. The story is really easy flowing and super adorable to watch. Most of the scenes in this movie will leave you with a big smile on your face. There is just one bad thing though, the movie was too small and wished it was a lil longer. I really loved the simple romantic plot and most of all the relationship between the main characters. Animation (10/10): The animation is a nice change of pace from your usual anime styles. The art style is fantastic, A-1 pictures definitely did a good job. Overall def…

This movie sucks. I had high hopes going into as I see it recommended a lot and then was seriously let down, and had to froce myself into sitting through the whole thing. Lots of nonconsensual kissing and a pedophile teacher. If you want a cute gay high school romance watch sasaki and miyano. They have the most healthy relationship I have ever seen in anime, especially in BL which has an unfortunate history of controversial and often harmful tropes. Bro how long does this review need to be. I said everything I need to say. Let me publish. ffs

I started watching the anime right after reading the manga, which definitely is not the best way to experience it since the adaptation is almost a direct translation from page to screen. Thus, story wise it added nothing new to the experience. Still, I think the anime did capture the unique feel of this manga pretty well. It gave off the nostalgic vibes that resembled the innocence of first love. The manga itself has a very unique minimal line and curve art style, while the anime goes for the water painting, hand drawn look. Basically a perfect fit visually for the medium. The voice acting fits the character and I'm glad they go for gentle rather than over-the-top expressions. The volume this anime adapt is a simple story of two classmates with opposite personalities falling in love. If…

doukyuusei is exactly what you should watch if you're looking for a lighthearted, soft bl movie. it explores the story of how two classmates, seemingly polar opposites, end up together. it encapsulates what two high school boys, unfamiliar with the concept of loving someone their own gender, go through. they both do make some dumb choices as any teen would, but it does get resolved in the end. this movie showcases what young love is like: yearning, miscommunication, and purity. the art style is unique and may take some time to get used to, but overall, a 10/10 for me! extra notes: - the boys do not go past kissing, the most they do is really just making out. - there IS a NONCONSENSUAL kiss, not between the two boys, but between one of the boys and a minor character. if watching this might…

This is my first review isn't going to be very in depth, and I am basing my review off of personal enjoyment which I probably shouldn't do since my own personal opinion is, well, personal to me, however I believe that if you aren't overly critical and enjoy a cute romance then u will enjoy Doukyuusei. First of all, for a short, hour long film there is a lot going on between the relationship of the main characters, and it's just adorable. The way they became friends and eventually caught feelings for each other by practising their singing together for choir is really cute as well, and I'm repeating myself because I can't really say much other than it was cute. That's all you really need to know. The art style was also extremely pleasing to the eye, which made it even more enjoyable to wat…

It's amazing that this story is so simple yet has such strong resonance. Very simple storyline and dialogues as befitting of the slice-of-life genre, it's comforting and strongly cathartic, rather than being overdramatic or obnoxious. Love, love the art, with the use of watercolors - the faded out textures gives it a warm and nostalgic feeling. The music, which is predominantly acoustic guitar fingerstyle pieces, is also very befitting, not only to the vibe of the story, but also because of one of the central characters, who's a guitarist. One of the more refreshing things about it is that it completely forgoes the 'sparkly' artstyle other anime would choose, and whole-heartedly embraces the washed out sometimes even rough watercolor textures, with realistic details such as rusted locker…

What I can say for sure is that now I have big interest for this manga. Movie is very good on my opinion. It is light and full of youth spirit... Youth can be stupid and make basic mistakes, you know :) First half of movie caused me a strange perception and I even thought that I probably wouldn’t like the movie in the end... But then it happened. I saw a big potential, which I think is hidden behind just one-hour-beginning, named movie :) I need to know more about these two now. Will definitely read manga later. About movie itself. Well... What can you say about just seed for a whole story..? It's... good? I think, if seed worked, you can say - it's good for sure :D I like psyhology of communication (any types of) very much. This is why for me is more important this side and I don't get h…

I had no idea what I was getting into before I decided to watch Doukyuusei, might even say that I had no expectations whatsoever. The art style was terrible and the characters all looked bland and boring but what waited for me was a simple story of love that I fell in love with. Everything was very simple in this movie, simple gestures, small absolutely normal moments, just your average day to day life, and yet, something about it was so so special. The way the two of them understood each other and ultimately were there for one another made this into the masterpiece it is. This anime was so close to reality that you could almost feel like you are there watching young love unfold with your very own eyes. If you have lost your faith in love and the world in general, I recommend you to watch…

It's been a longstanding tradition for me to review terrible yaoi anime every June. However, I'm rapidly running out of hilariously bad ones. I can't really do anything to top Kimera: Gay Vampires from Outer Space. So, this year I'll break with tradition and review the highest rated LGBTQ anime on all of MAL! Why is it the highest rated? Honestly, I have no idea. Doukyuusei is a direct adaptation of a yaoi manga written by a heterosexual woman. A lot of the hackneyed cliches you would expect show up here. There are clear cut "seme" and "Uke" roles. The Seme forcibly kisses the Uke against his protests on two occasions. The Seme has to bust in and rescue the Uke from being raped by another gay dude. At least there's no forced sex in this movie. I don't know what the top review is talking…

im disappointet. This movie is just the manga panel for panel word for word. For me there are to options to make a movie for the manga 1. they take there own turn and make something that isnt just a bland copy or 2. they make it comletely the same with the perspective of the teacher and the side story. but no, they couldn't do eather one of them. I personally loved the manga and was excited for the movie. Even though the movie was complete bullshit and a waste of my time the manga is for me a 10 out of 10. It just shows more sides to the story what makes some parts easier to understand. For example: in the movie you are propably just coonfused why the teacher kissed him when you havent read the manga. A movie shouldnt be like that its supposed to be able to stand on its own when its not…

Doukyuusei is a complicated movie, on one hand, its a cute story of two young boys growing comfortable with their sexualities and falling in love. On the other, its a rape-supporting mess with little to no character growth. You may think that its impossible to strike a balance between these two things but Doukyuusei would prove you wrong. Kusakabe, the more dominant member of the duo is completely inconsiderate of his partner; Sajou's feelings and will often kiss and/or touch him without permission, even if Sajou asks him to stop. This persist throughout a majority of the movie and Kusakabe receives very little punishment for this behavior. The conflict at the end of the movie feels rushed, definitely could have benefitted from a longer runtime or better pacing. I've been negative thi…
