Introduction

The band "given"—comprised of Ritsuka Uenoyama, Mafuyu Satou, Haruki Nakayama, and Akihiko Kaji—has advanced to the final screening of the Countdown-fes Amateur Contest, in which they will be judged on their live act. Although enthusiastic, they worry about having only one original song to perform. Mafuyu embraces the idea of learning more about music in order to create new, emotionally resonant songs. In this regard, he unexpectedly receives help from Ugetsu Murata, Akihiko's on-again, off-again lover. Ugetsu has unsuccessfully tried to let go of Akihiko, who himself is torn between lingering feelings for his past and an uncertain resolve for the future. As the competition draws near, Haruki uncharacteristically begins to doubt his place in the band and the trust he shares with Akihiko. It is a given that not all attachments last forever, but it remains to be seen what can be salvaged from the ruins of heartbreak—or if only regrets will endure. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The movie continues on from the fantastic season 1 however it shifts its focus from ritsuko and mafuyu to haruki and akihiko- of course the highlight of this movie is once again the absolutely incredible concert that imo even blows away the first one which I already held in high regard - the way that this song and the lyrics and the sounds resonates so heavily with what akihiko and haruki are going through and also mirrors ironically what mafuyu and ritsuko went through to establish a stronger relationship is incredible - the vocals have just never been better and genuinely no anime does music better than this one even though im an avid watcher and lover of shows like bocchi the rock - overall a fantastic continuation

So, remember that missing arc from the given anime that was described involving the relationship between Akihiko and Haruki? Well, this movie shows where that missing arc has been. To be one hundred percent honest, this movie should've been at least two or three episodes included in the anime to make a little more sense and how the anime would end. Does that mean that this movie is a bit misleading after saying that? Sure. So, the story is what I had mentioned and goes as follows. Akihiko is going through an emotional roller coaster due to his relationship with his ex-boyfriend, Ugetsu, going south. So he was jumping from place to place to sleep for a night until he ended up staying at Haruki's place. Funny enough, Haruki is actually in love with Akihiko. Yet the love story wasn't the only…

this anime is very aspiring to me. I'm a type of person that is never sure of what they truly want, and I try to please people and tell them what they want to hear but that's never how I actually feel. Sometimes I get so tired of human interactions and want to ghost and shut myself from the world. I don't usually say this much about myself but. this anime made me want to. And I really loved it. and I say thank you to the person that thought of this anime. And I will forever truly love music. Shi this anime got me cryin like, cmon dawg

It's been quite a while since I looked at Lerche's Given, a romance which had some faults but was still great. We've also seen Lerche's work with Konohana Kitan, Gakkougurashi and the Danganronpa anime. So, they do have a solid record when they aren't working on projects related to Danganronpa which makes me hopeful for this one. Story: We open with Satou attending a violin concert with Akihiko. This gives him the epiphany that you can convey strong emotions with music. Remember how in the series proper I talked about him having some ridiculous quirks that break suspension of disbelief? Well, add this to the list. In any case, we find out that Akihiko has been in a long running semi-relationship with the brilliant violinist Ugetsu as neither of them quite knows how to quit the other. W…

English. I think this movie is one of the best continuations I've seen of any anime, most of the time the sequels or continuations are based on leaving things unfinished or on wanting to extend the main plot but here they show us a new story with new protagonists which is still related to the previous material, but I also think it is very necessary to have seen the series first so that the film has much more impact, it is a combi film that tells of toxic relationships and not letting go of people who At some point we love even though at present they hurt us, it is a film that in addition to improving the animation compared to the original series, I also think that in my opinion it becomes a much more interesting film than the main series, they did everything right here and I even think tha…

Recommend: If you already like the Given anime series, then this is a nice extra to the little events after the series. This is largely focused on Akihiko x Haruki. If you only want the main couple, there's an OVA that focuses on them in the same timeline as this movie. Review: The innocent high school romance of the main couple is sweet, and give little butterflies flying around when I watched the main series. But this movie focuses on the adult love lives of Akihiko and Haruki, which is definitely more complicated and highlights the complexity of the human heart. "All is fair, in Love and War" - John Lyly. I interpret this quote as all is fair in Love and War, because nothing is fair, and getting hurt is almost inevitable in these situations (Whether is due to strong feelings or the…

The movie solidified the series as my favorite BL of all time. It has practically no peers in the genre, it is just so good: the story, the pacing, the characters... I'm in love with all of them; all are fleshed out so well. Some scenes are now etched in my brain. I understand the characters more and more the more I think about them, even outside of watching (and rewatching). This emotional depth is hard to come by in this medium. Critical loose ends were tightened in the film. The story ends on a breathtakingly high, yet somewhat bittersweet note. The art is striking. The music is very good. I'm not into the style that the band is playing, but the emotion is just so raw, it's impossible not to be impressed. And music in non-performance scenes is flat-out brilliant. Some criticize the m…

First off, I have not read the manga and am not a diehard fan of the TV series, I simply enjoyed the story and music so wanted to check out the movie too. Whether it is a faithful adaptation doesn't factor into my enjoyment, and I didn't have many expectations going in. I loved the Given movie. It explores loss similar to the TV series, but loss through toxic mutations of the ties of love even when the people are alive. In fact I enjoyed the movie more than the TV series, the convoluted emotions and self-conflict really resonated with me. The pain of internal struggles overcoming self made hurdles. At first I wasn't particularly big fans of Aki and Haru and didn't really feel they worked for each other. As the movie progressed though, I saw how the two had already always emotionally suppo…

Watched it after reading the manga. From what I remember there were no changes which is great. The thing is that the part of the manga that this movie explores, has a terrible event. The fact that they sound director didn't chose a dark music during that event but a completely opposite one made me disgusted. (*specifications on what that event was at the end of the review) The animation is the same as in the series except for a higher quality during the performance. Voice acting was good. Sound design was normal. Soundtrack good (great performance song, awful choice during prior mentioned event). Charcaters: The relationship between the three main characters were complex and realistic enough. Ugetsu's reasoning and actions are understandable and painful; Akihiko's event was disgusting whi…

As someone with a personality disorder who realises she hurts her husband the same way Ugetsu knows he hurts Kaji, this hits ~far~ too close to home. I can't review this properly, nor will I give it the justice it deserves. But I just wanted to say "please watch it." It's important. Given the Movie has improved on everything I adored about the series, and it managed to do it in less time. "But I want this pain to end just as much. But at the same time, I don't want all the things filling this room to disappear." Approach this movie carefully and in a positive state of mind. It's broken me, and I need to go lay down for a while and cry.

Watching the anime and then the movie in two days I’d probably one of my favourite procrastination methods I’ve done in a while lmao, I thought this was really cute and I loved the characters. One thing I really loved about the Given series is getting to see LGBT characters live out normal romance experiences without being fetishized or oversexualized. It’s definitely some of the best rep I’ve seen in an anime. In the movie I Loved seeing Uenoyama and Satou be cute and happy together and it was nice to get to see the background of Haruki, Ugetsu, and Akihiko. I just feel like this movie had a lot more potential and ended up being kinda rushed. I feel like they should’ve made this a season two or at least a longer movie. I still enjoyed it and the song was amazing but I just feel like it c…

Kaji is a piece of crap. Sure the story ends well... be he straight up ran from everything in his life and messed up everyone else's. He also raped Haruki. WTF. WHY IS THAT OKAY to people?! Why does Haruki say he consented? He didn't. Kaji... you are trash. If you read through the manga he is an even worse piece of crap. I don't care if someone tries to turn their life around, that doesn't mean it makes everything they did okay. There are SO many other animes that have better stories, with romance, that is about music. I liked the original anime so much better. This movie ruined it. I originally wanted a season 2 to see what became of the band and the romance, but I don't care anymore. Any future season 2 can go burn.

So, I finally remembered this movie is out by now and decided to watch it. Important things first: This movie, among a couple other issues, has a scene that might very well be triggering to some people and while it doesn't go all the way the movie should probably have warned viewers about it and addressed it. On to everything else: I haven't read the manga so I can't speak to how accurate the movie sticks to it's source material but I quite enjoyed the movie. It seemed to have some pacing issues and there were a couple of things I would have wanted to linger on for a bit more and especially the last 4 or 5 minutes seemed partially out of nowhere but for the most part it felt like the important beats where all hit. Ritsuka and Mafuyu taking a backseat to catch up with what the ever-…

so, i was recommended the Given movie after watching Doukyuusei so maybe I went in expecting too much but....... the hype this movie got for what it is is crazy to me. to be fair, i hv not watched the Given anime, although i've heard good things, i don't think i'll bother after this movie. (i had a friend giving me the backstory when i watched it) i was kind of surprised that everyone here more or less flat out ignored the sexual harassment??? like it doesn't matter is the character liked the other he said no multiple times and yet??? i heard people bashing doukyuusei for rape and what not but this, nothing?? i thought it was extremely unpleasant to watch and added absolutely nothing to the movie's foundation. having abuse in a movie or show isn't necessarily bad if the show clearly doesn…

Many manga pieces were cut from the movie. The atmosphere is quite bland, the dramatic moments look lackluster, Mafuyu's song is great as always, and the relationship between Akihiko and Haruki is ... typical ... And I don't think I need to tell you what it is. Akihiko is a bastard. Why? Because, in the first place, he sexually assaults Haruki by attacking him on the couch. The scene is not as bad as in the manga, because in the manga it was much more rapey ... I don't need to say what. Terrible isn't it? But you will tell me. ''But Given doesn't use it like other BLs''. Sorry, but we're in a romantic movie, not in a documentary crime movie. There are a thousand other ways to show a dramatic moment, but using a proven thread is easier. You know what? This situation is swept under the rug…

I read the manga prior to watching both the anime and the movie so I already knew what was gonna happen, many others who were manga readers expressed their disappointment with this film especially with the pacing and lack of depth(?) which I didn't really see a problem with. But re-reading the AkiHaru arc, they really did cut out quite a bit of content. Quite a lot of UenoMafu content, as well as the preparation of the concert, and also the depth behind Haruki's feelings and Ugetsu and Akihiko's relationship. The movie was fine, but definitely read the manga for more!

as much as i love given i wouldn't lie i expect better plot and ending, i feel like the ending is kinda plain and average compared to my expectation and it's kinda naive a little bit compared to how deep the background story. tbh it's better to give more realistic and hurtful ending to create more memorable point/impact, or at least they should make the perspective wider because it's like given member and done that's it that's all which is kinda boring. there's no such + from the movie although i know that the movie is just following the plot from the manga but i really expect them to create extra on the movie.

There's sexual assault in this movie. If you want to skip it, it starts at 19:30 and ends at 21:47. This movie is basically Akihiko and Haruki's whole arc, which was my favorite part of the manga. Since their arc doesn't connect too much to the main story and distracts from the main couple, it makes perfect sense why it would get it's own movie. It also makes sense because this portion of the story is a lot darker and mature than the rest of the series. I have mixed feelings about this arc, and have since the manga. I enjoy how it focuses on more adult topics with adult characters, but some of the ways Gusari handled it makes me uncomfortable (and I adore her writing, so I say that with all due respect). This movie focuses on unhealthy relationships and (as mentioned) includes sexual ass…

Hello! There is my first ever review, so please feel free to leave me some constructive criticism if you would so like to! I just noticed that most of the reviews of this movie were from people who read and enjoyed the manga, and I just wanted to give my own take as someone who has ONLY watched the anime (as of writing this review). If you have read the manga, that is great! I am hoping to read the manga myself some day. However, I just wanted to write this review for any other anime-only watchers out there. Please note that I am fairly biased as Haruki was my favourite character from the original series, however, I will try and remove that bias as much as I possibly can as I am writing this review. I will also try to remain spoiler-free as much as I possibly can, however I will be talking…

I am ready for some backclash but I actually loved the way this was written and I know many people didn't. I liked how they showed Akihko getting out of a toxic relationships and actually showed how hard it is to let go of someone even if they hurt you in the past/still are. I loved how they showed real life struggles and the bravery it takes to let someone go and move on. How hard it can be but how much happiness it can bring. How sometimes everything doesn't end up how you want to and that's okay. And that "Love" isn't always sunshines and rainbows. It protrays many real life relationships issues. And most importantly the character development. How its never too late to admit your mistakes and be better. How its never too late to change and be a better person. Sometimes not for yourself,…
