Honey and Clover

Honey and Clover

Introduction

Yuuta Takemoto, a sophomore at an arts college, shares a cheap apartment with two seniors—the eccentric Shinobu Morita, who keeps failing to graduate due to his absenteeism, and the sensible Takumi Mayama, who acts as a proper senior to Takemoto, often looking out for him. Takemoto had not given much thought to his future until one fine spring day, when he meets the endearing Hagumi Hanamoto and falls in love at first sight. Incredibly gifted in the arts, Hagumi enrolls in Takemoto's university and soon befriends the popular pottery student Ayumi Yamada. Ayumi is already well acquainted with the three flatmates and secretly harbors deep feelings for one of them. Hachimitsu to Clover is a heartwarming tale of youth, love, soul-searching, and self-discovery, intricately woven through the complex relationships between five dear friends. You know, the funny thing is...this MAL app didn't even exist when I watched this for the first time. I also feel like I watched it a second time, 10 years later, but can't readily remember, like so many things...too many things. Anyway, this anime surely helped shape how I saw the word, or feelings about certain things. The songs, played in every episode, at first I didn't like them, or rather, I didn't appreciate them. I was young and wanted to see the show, in all it's chaos, weirdness and amazing emotional awkwardness. Later, I downloaded all the songs and played them continuously, they became a part of my nostalgia, my past and now again, my present. I will update after I've watched it again, to compare and share my feelings now that some years have passed, but what I can already s…

Honey and Clover is about discovering what love is - slowly, awkwardly, and often too late to do anything about it. Love in this series is rarely mutual and almost never clearly spoken. Characters struggle to express their feelings, misunderstand one another, or sit silently with emotions they don’t yet have language for. Unrequited love isn’t treated as a narrative obstacle to overcome, but as a formative experience: something that shapes who you become, even if it never resolves cleanly. The series widens its lens beyond romance. It explores how people express love in fundamentally different ways - toward friends, family, art, and the future they’re trying to imagine for themselves. There’s the complicated love of a child watching a mother remarry, the confusion of what loyalty means wh…

(Spanish review on my list) I watched it because it's from the same author as 3gatsu no lion, a dramatic Shogi boy anime that made me cry a lot a few years ago, but sadly, 3gatsu never ended. However, this anime of honey and clover does end, so I said, "Well, why not?" And I really enjoyed it. In a nutshell, the anime is about a group of young people going through the process of their lives, where they must go from being college students to functioning adults... a very ugly period of life. Our protagonists have to deal with finishing their studies, getting a job, being functional, figuring out what they want to do with their lives and what to do with their relationships... and that's it... It's a realistic drama, nothing super romantic, nothing supernatural, just a process we all go th…

How far could you go, without turning to look back? This anime is one of a kind. Honey and Clover is for people that don’t have everything figured out. The way it handles emotions and human relationships is remarkable. You could genuinely feel every emotion portrayed, and every conflict felt real. The dialogue is exceptionally good paired with the music. Those end parts that have such a melancholic feel to them are just excellent. The op is great, the soundtracks are too. Most of the characters are very well written, allowing the viewer to feel and empathize even with the ones we see less. The biggest issue this anime has is pretty obvious from the first episode: Hagu. The fact that she looks like a child is a problem by itself, but it could be lessened or even overlooked if she didn’t…

The show ends before it even begins. The messy-haired guy with glasses already leaves college before we have a chance to get to know him, Hagu’s cigarette-smoking guardian goes off on some trip to Africa, and Morita is hardly ever around – and yet immediately, the story thrusts itself into these sad feelings without even having laid the necessary groundwork for the viewer to become attached to these characters. Silver-haired guy’s bicycle trip, and his eventual return capping off the first season, where he finally gets the better of Morita, is a satisfying moment. The scene at the very, very end where Takemoto opens up the good-luck charm Hagu gave him is inspired. In general I appreciate the maturity of the writing and its attempts at realism. All the characters are very likeable so long…

Unrequited love. Wishing the person you love felt the same way about you. Falling for someone you know you can't have. Channeling your pain into art. The uncertainty of adult life. The pain and guilt you feel when someone has feelings for you that you just can't return. At its core, this anime is about cherishing the good times with the people you love in the here and now, because someday they will be mere memories. Honey and Clover is one of the most realistic portrayals of relationships I have seen in an anime. The main characters are all young adults, trying to figure out their places in life and navigate their confusing romantic feelings. There are hard lessons to be learned here, but necessary ones. Sometimes, no matter how much we love someone, it's just not enough, and it neve…

What is this anime? Group of friends living life at an art college. That's pretty much it. yep. Some light drama here and there. MC is in love with the new girl and we see as he pursues life and grows as a person. Did I enjoy this? From how I described it, it may sound boring and slow. And it is. (I even dropped it once). But due to the high rating, I thought I must be missing something. And, well, its very nice. Although its an anime, and of course have some things that would not happen in real life, it is quite realistic. The characters make decisions normal humans would make. The romances play out like they would in real life. We really are just joining the characters on their journey through their college years. Yet, strangely enough it is entertaining, and has a soothing, calming vib…

My all-time favorite anime, and it hasn't changed for more than 10 years now. Whenever I feel down or uninspired, this is one of my go-to anime, which I can just watch the entire series (S1&2) in one sitting. It has the perfect combination of comedy, romance and drama that fits perfectly to my taste. The soundtrack is probably also my favorite anime soundtrack of all time. It just gives that extra boost of emotion which elevates this show even higher for me. I love the coming-of-age theme of this anime. I'm able to relate to almost all of the characters and how they matured throughout the entire show and definitely affected me in a great way in how I view things and always try to look at life on a different and more positive perspective.

“I realized why I was lost. It’s not because I didn’t have a map… It was because I didn’t have a destination.” -Yuuta Takemoto Gosh, I don’t know what to say. Honey and Clover is a gem of a masterpiece! I watched it way back 6 years ago but when I re-watched it, this anime gave me many important things in life. I've read the manga, seen the live-action movie and TV Drama, and re-watched the anime but still, it hits me in the heart. It is written by Chica Umino, known for 3-gatsu no Lion and if haven't watched it, you might miss a hidden gem of a masterpiece. It is a tale of friendship, love, pain, family, and self-discovery. (LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!) Story: 9/10 - The main premise of the story is about Yuuta Takemoto, your typical poor college boy who lived in an old apartment with his s…

You should really give it a try. I was really sceptic at first and almost dropped on 4th episode but i made myself to watch at least half way trough. After passing 10th episode it was hard to stop watching. I will write synopsis and spoiler free review. I would say it is drama, comedy, romance anime. Also it has more elements here and there but to sum the three will prevail. Story is basically about student life and adulthood. Questions most of the important things in life trough the life of few friends and acquaintances. It starts off in a weird way if you ask me but as plot goes on it makes more and more sense why it starts that way. Later on it goes with its own flow and pace, you start to notice plot points and complications. Dynamic is just right in the middle, its not tense and it…

Story and narrative reads like a novel. --Light and simple things show deep meaning and convey heavy emotion, and important things happen often allowing lots of character development. It is a wonderful story from the very beginning. Incredible dialogue and setting. The idea of making a romance anime this way would probably never had come to many script writers minds but it is definitely a superb showing of emotion. This anime is criminally underrated but i personally don't mind as it makes me feel like i've seen something incredible that other people haven't. My personal favorite character is Yuta Takemoto not because he's the narrator but because I can relate to him the most; Takemoto is depicted as the most mellow of the main characters but he's also the most realistic and understanding…

I did not enjoy watching Honey and Clover. Much of the blame fall upon the characters and story (or lack thereof). The slow, slice-of-life approach can work if the main cast is compelling, but I found it hard to really care about anything these characters were going through. The character development is sluggish as well, outside of Yuuta who I felt changed too abruptly during his arc. Hagu and her childlike appearance and personality were unsettling considering her role in a love triangle with college students. The romance in general was odd, I didn't understand most of pairings or the motivations behind these relationships. All of this combined with the lack of a strong overarching plot made for a very boring watch. Visually, Honey and Clover was solid. It reminded me of 3-gatsu and Noda…

"Where am I going?" "Am I truly content with the way things are? " "Is this really what I want?" Those type of questions are probably not so unfamiliar to most of us. Perhaps even some of us dread having those lingering thoughts in the back of our heads. But what if we could get insight from someone that dealt with life's hardships? That's where Honey and Clover comes in and thats also why I believe it's not something everyone will appreciate. The series talks about the lifes and problems of a group of five art students connected with each other either by friendship or stronger feelings. The series presents our protagonists with various real life problems and gives us the viewers, a chance to see how different people with different personalities and experience handle what life throws at…

I'm truly glad that I decided to continue to watch this even though I was a little bit offput by the animation style as well as how little Hagu was. It made me feel more confident in doing what I really wanted to do regardless of the possible consequences and judgment I might receive. The story covers pretty much all of the characters that we see in the first episode, too, so I was happy about that. Who would have thought? I sure didn't. I don't think this anime will be appreciated to its full potential by young teenagers--instead, maybe those that are about to no longer be teenagers or people like me that recently became a part of the working society after graduating university. It covered all the issues I'm currently troubled by, so it felt like I was even being given knowledge I do…

Now, it's been a while since I watched this series, so my review may be a little superficial, but one thing is certain; This is the only series I actively will try not to ever, ever watch again. And the reason for that is simple: I loved it so very much. The characters; Everything from backstories, to personalities, relationships, even to their names and how all the names together make up a certain "name aesthetic", made me feel so connected to them. I wanted to cheer for them, I wanted to understand them even more and I wanted to reach out to them. And then there is the gorgeous artstyle that's soft and light-hearted, yet able to invoke very real and saddened emotions when the situation allowed it. The story was paced in a way that I never got bored, and I constantly wanted to know how…

I think the best part in any story is bringing the reader with you on a journey. And I think Honey and Clover delivered that really well. I love how it's a slow yet sturdy journey. Like there's no need to rush the scenes, the progress of the characters growth -- especially the progress of forgetting someone you love or rushing into new love. I mean it's alright to be still hang up on some shitty guy you love -- that's life. It's okay to feel lost a lot of times because hey there's no manual in life -- cuz that's reality. But there's a beauty in it all, and I love how the pace of the story connects every thing. The author definitely brought each character into life. You could really relate to each one of them. You feel their struggle, their happiness and sadness -- the whole journey. You'…

Was it ever supposed to get this good? Honey and Clover began life as the debut series for Fuji TV's "Noitamina" (read it backwards) lineup, a new anime block aimed at older female audiences. The simple but daring plan worked—young women who would never normally watch anime got into it, and the manga now breaks the Top 10 sales list regularly, sitting alongside blockbuster titles like Prince of Tennis or Bleach. But even viewers outside the target demographic attest to its greatness, pointing out its heartfelt storytelling and unique visual style. It was supposed to be just good enough for sophisticated female viewers—and it ended up being good enough for everyone. Funnier than most comedies and more touching than most dramas (even the live-action ones), Honey and Clover has emerged as one…

i also a student majoring in art, somehow i can relate of their bittersweet daily life and i also have somekind of friends that can be related to the character in this series. striving for unordinary new ideas, the painful feeling of cannot express well what you want to create. the greed of wanting to try a lot of different things with limited capability.. for all the josei and romance genre i've watched, this is the best. "you don't have to feel all bitter if you failed your love" that's one of many great things i've learned from this series. you will definitely got a lot of good quote. what i regret after watching this: i should watch it earlier, like.. in highschool.. i think if i watch this early, maybe my life will kinda changed now yeah, the good part of honey and clover is not abo…

I recently decided to rewatch Honey and Clover after having experienced unrequited love, heartbreak, and uncertainties about the immediate future. I felt also that I should rewatch and watch some anime dealing with college, while I’m still in it myself. I will skip over a synopsis since there already is one. As for talking about the story itself, it is slice of life to its core. Rarely, even in the same genre, can you find a story so mature, realistic, and moving. Few anime deal so much and so heavily with unrequited love, college, and the uncertainties of life. The story is able to show it all and more, as it takes along on its journey, that feels all too real and relatable. Now I will not lie, especially the first few episodes are slow, and it takes a while to really get into the show.…
