Genshiken

Introduction

Kanji Sasahara is an introverted college freshman just looking for a place to fit in. One day, he happens to stumble upon the club known as the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture—otherwise known as Genshiken—that serves to bring the full spectrum of otaku culture together. His first visit to the club, however, does not end well as Sasahara's pride is crushed by his senior, Harunobu Madarame, and he leaves the meeting in full denial of his otaku nature. However, after befriending club member Makoto Kousaka, who turns out to be a hardcore otaku despite his looks, Sasahara becomes more involved with club activities which include obsessing over their favorite anime, reading doujinshi, and attending conventions. There, he meets other interesting people like Kousaka's vehemently non-otaku girlfriend Saki Kasukabe, who strives to turn her boyfriend into a "normal guy." While Saki struggles to understand otaku culture and her boyfriend's love for it, Sasahara finds himself enjoying his time at Genshiken, gradually shedding any denial he once had about being an otaku and immersing himself in an otaku lifestyle. Anime about otaku and otaku complain that it's about otaku. Funny, huh? Personally, I really liked it and the comedy was really good. The OP/ED was so good that I never missed it and the ED itself always had a different ending, which I also liked, so it's not worth skipping. The animation could have been better, but I didn't mind. The anime is full of references to various anime, one ep. was dedicated only to the Gundam mecha series, but overall I didn't know any of them, since it was an old anime. Personally, I'm focused on anime, manga and games, that's my holy trinity. Things like cosplay, festivals, modeling, etc. are beyond me, finding time for everything is simply impossible, so I stuck to at least these three. Mecha modeling is not my favorite, but I tried it at least as a simulator…

A Girl's Mission To Save Her Boyfriend Genshiken is an anime about a woman trying to survive in the sweaty and disgusting environment of the Otaku, but maybe it's not so bad once you get to know them. What it does so amazingly, is how it portrays the Otaku and how real it still feels today. Just thinking about the people in my friend circle, and the people I have met at convention, It's so painfully accurate that it hurt some time. The point of view character works so well to make the other characters stick out as weirdos, and the things they say themselves, doesn't help at not making them seem like weirdos. Each side learned to give an inch, and maybe understanding can be given, at least she cannot get out of it, because her boyfriend is one of the Otaku. It also such a fun timecaps o…

What a blast from the past, Genshiken is such a perfect time capsule of early 2000s otaku culture while also being a timeless celebration of otaku culture itself. The amount of references both current (2000s) and old are such a treat for any otaku who has been around. From anime to manga to doujin/eroge to cosplay to gaming to the otaku mecca Comiket, this anime/manga is such a love letter. The characters are great with a straight woman thrown in to flesh out and balance this satirical slice of life comedy. This has so much more relevance to me now compared to when I first watched this in high school 13 years ago (2012 ish). Having the experience of being in college and attending my college's anime club, including being its president for a time, and forming my own group of otaku friends, t…

I enjoyed the first season. The anime talk, the gaming and the group gatherings were all pretty fun to watch. All the characters were interesting especially the president. I need to find more series like this one. Tho if going to conventions and festivals are really like that I don't think I could go 😂. I hope we get more group outings in the second season and ovas. I know people will probably dislike the art style, but I love it. I've always enjoyed this type of art style and that's how I actually found this anime. I highly recommend this one if you just want to watch enjoy all the same things you do

A surprisingly enjoyable watch. As someone who's watched anime for many years, I'm glad that there are still shows like this that remain to be seen. The show didn't shy away from mature topics and explored otaku culture rather well. My only gripe was that not all characters felt like they had a role to play - mainly thinking of the big burly guy in the club who didn't say much but I can imagine that he'll have more scenes in the sequel. Overall, looking forward to season 2. The show reminds me a bit of some other parody shows at times like Gintama though it's clear that they are in completely different genres. Still, I found the show to have some fresh ideas and it made me realize that it's worthwhile to go back and watch some old shows instead of the constant trope filled shows we're…

I recently finished the Genshiken Series Arrangement: [1] Genshiken (12) [2] Genshiken OVAs (3) [3] Genshiken 2 (12) [4] Genshiken Nidaime OVA (1) [5] Genshiken Nidaime (13) [6] Genshiken Nidaime Specials (4) This anime is really a good slice-of-life anime, from the realistic attitude of characters and scenarios of real life. It explores addiction, sense of belonging, enjoyment of youth, depression, change, and many more. The anime reminds me of my life in my college days when you need to join an organization, club, or circle of friends who have similar hobbies. We casually played a lot of games, watch anime overnight, and hangout. but even eventually we all have to graduate and go through adulting finding a job(really really hard by the way) managing bills and etc. sometime you guys occ…

GENSHIKEN stands for “Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyūkai” or “The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture”. This anime is about the activities of a group of otaku and their lifestyle. Starting from characters who are just starting to become otaku and characters who have become otaku, the twists and turns of otaku student life are poured out in this anime. This season only shows the daily life of an otaku and also as a student. Like going to Komiket together, going to akihabara, assembling gunpla, etc. Just normal activities, nothing so special or conflict in this season. The comedy is not that good, the parody of the real anime is not that much, mostly fantasy anime in the anime itself. However, I like the depiction of life in this anime, it looks so real and not too overwhelming to me.

There are some anime out there that are just important to the whole genre, and I feel like this should be one of them, as it is probably the best one to showcase how the otaku culture was in the early 2000s. For younger audience members especially, this is a trip to a past they never got to experience, but at least can learn about. I watched it subbed back in early 2010s, and I just finished watching the dub version now, and it's very good! I can't explain it, but it sounds like a 2004 anime! All in all, this is our history as anime fans (or otakus), and for that reason alone I can only give it a 10 and urge everyone to give it a watch!

I watched this anime when it was new, and now too in 2020. It's just as great as I remembered it! First episode is kind of depressing, to be honest. A lot of emphasis on how the characters are a bunch of nerdy otakus - with the exception of Kousaka. But it picks up quickly from there into becoming very addictive! It's one of those series you can watch in a single day not realizing that it's already over by the time you're in episode 12. A lot of self-deprecating otaku humor, which is quite good! I find it great that they made it a college anime, and not a high school one. Really opens the door to themes about sexuality, which are there too - well, these are college students, after all... Plus, I think the fact that it happens in a college environment allowed the characters to be more con…

The only few college/university anime where the anime focuses towards an anime club and them doing their club activities. If you like Shirobaku and Bakuman then you'd probably enjoy this anime as well as it's all about club members doing club activities which for Genshiken is of course - watch anime, read manga, cosplay, etc. It's chill. It's funny and I never get bored of it I finished the whole thing in one day. Genshiken is special. It doesn't blast off and show flashy shits like most of the shows nowadays and it doesn't seem too bland and boring either. Despite the simple story, Genshiken feels incredible fun to fucking watch. I guess to summarize Genshiken it would be a "breather anime". An anime I'd watch after watching something extreme as Genshiken is just chill. Not everythi…

The reason why I pick this anime just few months ago was because I needed some 'chill' or just some relaxing school setting stuff. Sounds boring, but thats just me. *bits of spoilers included Story: - Its just about a club named Genshiken which basically is an 'otaku' club and their everyday life or typical activites... All of the episodes are just full of slice of life as you can expect from the tag genre... More talking stuff. Some jokes here and there. So you gotta listen and kinda be open-minded like, instead of just 'watching' and expecting something, just try and imagine yourself what you'd think of a response if they said something on a certain topic. That way you won't be bored so fast. Art: Its an old anime. I do really feel nostalgic seeing the art, really feels like home a…

Ive scrolled past this anime many times when looking for something new to watch, always skipping it since the otaku culture theme did not interest me majorly.. But as soon as I decided to give this show a shot, I was instantly pleased. (First Impression) The first thing that really made an impression on me was how realistic everything felt and how immersive it was. From the very first scene I had a flashback of my first day as a university freshman, everything from the nervous and lost attitude, to the look of every building, every wall , the realism of the characters, the afternoon beers where the drinking does not go as smootly as expected, questionable romances and such are the kind of things that made this show feel very authentic and relatable and set the tone for an enjoyable watch…

Starting off watching Genshiken, i thought i was just dealing with a mediocre series about otaku life, but let's clear out some outlines of reasons why this show is actually good. First of all, the anime doesn't get the urge to "move" the audience, it's simply a slow driving story which nothing much happens in the process, it's the comedy and the approach to talking and looking into the details that makes this series a truly good one. pointing out the details in a conversation and extract a gap to hit the nerve and make the audience actually laugh. the reason why the comedy here is so good is a simple reason, you are not expected to be laughed at the matter and it's the shock that makes you laugh your lungs out! the main subject is so out of ordinary that you can't help but wondering how t…

I think this is as Slice of Life as Slice of Life gets. Story: Well... At a glance, it doesn't feel like there's a story element here... But I think there is. And it's quite nice. Art: It's ... fine. The drawings add to the comedy at times. There's no groundbreaking action, but that's just perfect for what this show is. Sound: I find the opening theme really enjoyable. One of the characters' voices is especially entertaining as well. Characters: There's a good bit of diversity among the characters. Enjoyment: It's an easy going, funny anime with tidbits of drama here and there. Overall it was a fun watch. I'm glad there's more of this series.

There is an acute lack of Anime based in college, which already makes this anime rare and worth watching. Howewer, that is not the only reason to watch it. This anime is useful to get an insight on otaku life in Japan. The characters are the strong point of this anime, never letting you get bored with their hilarious antics. All of them have their own unique personalities, and as otakus, we can relate to their struggles. It also provides useful knowledge on the kinds of activities an Anime/Manga club can do. If you are an otaku studying in college, this anime is simply unmissable. It may even inspire you to create your own Anime club.

I'm Dion Bauer and these were the worst 288 minutes of my life. WARNING:This review contains sarcasm and fun and all the things the PC fruitcakes hate. Now on to the review and where do i fucking start with this one? It's like asking me to write the memoirs of a rotten corpse i met just 2 minutes ago..I mean it's a fucking corpse,it doesn't talk,it doesn't move its' hands so sign language is out of the question..What the hell am i supposed to do? I know,i'll do what every single other reviewer does and make shit up about how this anime is the holy book of otakus given to our ancestors by God Otaku himself 2000 yrs ago.Yeah that's the way to go.. Or not..You see i'm not your average reviewer so when i review something i want to review it for what it is and what it offers in terms of exci…

The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, otherwise known as Genshiken. I am honestly not entirely sure how to go about describing this anime without simply referring you to the title. In a short summary Genshiken is a show about otakus and the various forms of media that different otakus often specialize themselves in. We have our mecha experts, our cosplayers, our lovers of doujinshi, and our gamers. At the heart of this show however we have two main characters. One, a non-otaku who is part of Genshiken only to be with her otaku boyfriend, and the other, a young otaku who is only now developing his interest in our modern visual culture. I think Genshiken is a rather average slice of life show, what differentiates it from others in the genre is the fact that it follows otakus…

An anime that takes time getting used to due to characters and the early pacing. So in this anime i think the story is very well done it captures a certain type of otaku lifestyle but also brings with it the difficulties around it. The story shows well that most people can be love anime manga or similar no matther how they look and shows that you need acceptance for those who do what they love. I would say due to different aspects though this anime begins rather slow and might scare people from going further since they will be worried that the rest of the serie is like this. In that case i can reassure whoever reads this that this isn't the case. The story picks up and gets more interesting as you move through it. It gives you an uncensored view on how some or many otakues are and everyt…

So let me start off by saying that I am extremely biased on rating this anime, and here is a short reasoning why. I actually just got out of a very long, very very bad relationship, in my life. I actually stopped watching anime a lot at this time, and kind of stopped doing the things I enjoyed. However at the time one thing kind of kept me going without me realizing it, and that was the Genshiken manga. So recently I started making strides in being me again. Got into a good relationship, and I actually, for the first time ever, started making forward steps in my life. I went to my local used entertainment store, and they had the complete collection of Genshiken. To be honest I did tear up a little bit when I first saw it. So this is how much this series means to me. It helped me when I nee…
