Princess Jellyfish is a decently entertaining show. It surely gets points for being unique. For once a mostly female cast that doesn't automaticallly give harem vibes, as they're all shut-ins who abhor the typical lives of those they deem too "stylish". The show definitely was meant to cater to an otaku girl type crowd, and it deals well with showcasing the finer points of the social anxiety filled lifestyles that the main group (called the "sisterhood") is living.
I think the biggest part of the show that keeps it interesting is when they hit you with some of the traumatic stories of the main characters' childhoods. No spoilers, but many of the character's motivations shift into focus in a very endearing way once you learn their backstories. The main storyline is just one of coming-of-ag…

It was a good show to watch and I do recommend it, but there's just a few things that make it, not great. It feels somewhat all over the place, and leaves a bunch unanswered. Not to mention that the ending is suuuuper anticlimactic. Overall, nothing really happens. It's a genuinely nice time-waster show for if you don't care for a deep plot or any real development to happen.
At some points stuff happens that seems like it will lead somewhere cool, but it is ultimately abandoned within a couple episodes. It's kinda confusing as to why that happens, but okay I guess.
The characters are also a bit annoying. Our main character is enjoyable, as is the cross-dresser, and some of the side characters are okay. But jeeeez I died inside a little every time Mayaya got screen time. She was so unbeli…

"If reincarnation is real, I hope I'm not a human next time. But I don't want to be a dog or cat. Because there are still "cute" ones and "not cute" ones. If I do get reborn, then I, I want to just rock gently on the ocean waves. I want to be a jellyfish."
This is so cuteeeee! beautiful and funny. The art is also amazing. I wanted them to be together so bad, my "lesbian" couple (iykyk). I wish the anime focused on their relationship evolving 💔 genuinely deserves so much love and a second season. We want moreeee!
You will soooooo be in love with Kuranosuke's thought for Tsukimi, seeing good in her while she doesn't see it.

We often see otaku dudes being main characters of anime but what if you have not just one, but five girls instead and make them extremely introverted and socially awkward. Oh and have them all live together. All of this sounds like a recipe for a disaster but somehow Kuragehime ends up piecing together a charming narrative about these lovable idiots.
Tsukimi is the lead in the show and she is so adorable it makes me giddy whenever she does stuff. She's just a simple girl who loves jellyfishes due to them being connected to fond memories of her late mother. Besides her love for them, she hasn't really matured much in other ways yet, including handling any kind of romantic feelings.
Going blind into the series, I didn't know if it would have any kind of romance to it but it does. Don't exp…

While whittling away at my Definitive Top 100 Greatest Anime of All Time List, I’ll sometimes watch an anime that I really want to make the list - but unfortunately, just probably won’t.
Princess Jellyfish is an 11 episode anime adaption that came out in 2010, animated by Brain’s Base, and directed by Takahiro Omori, who’s known for directing Natsume’s Book of Friends, Baccano, and Durarara!!.
On the production side of things, there’s a lot to love about Princess Jellyfish - the animation is stunning, the editing packs a lot of comedic punch, but above all else the colors are breathtaking. The Color Setter for the series was Ritsuko Utagawa, who’s also done colors for productions like 91 Days, Gintama, and Baccano.

*Brief Review-Reflections*
~~
Princess Jellyfish is brief entertainment with loose threads. It introduces unconventional elements in mainstream media such as a love triangle-ish between a crossdressing heterosexual who captivates the eyes of people regardless of gender identity, into (feminine) fashion to deviate from the suffocating political scene and to bask in the glory of sparkling beauty--an inheritance from his mother--à la stereotype-breaking trailblazer style; his 30-year-old virgin half-brother politician from an affair; and a jobless autistic jellyfish-addicted recluse interrupted from the joyous occasion of her first revelation of burning love towards the chaste elder brother by a blackmailing bombshell coquette. Interesting premises galore for sure, inhibited only by the spe…

I wanted to give a disclaimer for queer people with this review, I even logged into my account after like 4 years. I've been recommended this anime in regard to its queer themes, which do not exist. Especially for my trans folks, beware of the first 2-3 episodes as it may be triggering for some with clear anti-trans messages.
Look, I know the manga is old. That does not mean that the mangaka can clearly use the characters as a mouthpiece to voice anti-queer opinions. The anime adaptation does not help as the voicing articulates this message.
With the disclaimer out of the way, I want to rant about the representation of Kuranosuke and the Japanese people. I am sick and tired of this media when it tries to represent queer characters. The mangaka states directly that Kuranosuke is not a "t…

Princess Jellyfish is a show about a secluded hyper fixated artist in an apartment building shared by those with their own hyper fixations & anxieties. Enter a fashionable crossdressing male that enjoys the company of the female lead & her Jellyfish fixation. Their interactions are genuine and reflective of an outgoing person interacting with an introverted individual and how one can improve their confidence through fashion & care. Its comedy, turned romance, turned drama and while the genre swapping results in jarring progression, lack of answers & exploration or evolution of its side cast, the two leads carry the show throughout the transition by being entertaining, caring and genuine human characters that grow from their interactions and experiences. On top of that the fashion & charact…

....I 100% went into this thinking it was about a jellyfish who turned into a princess. And I absolutely love that I had NO clue what was gonna end up happening in this story! I really try my best to write these as spoiler-free as possible, so apologies if my reviews all end up sounding a bit samey (story good, characters good, anime is my passion, etc.). So its about a group of ultra shy otakus who get their whole shut-in way of life uprooted by an incredibly stunning woman who forcibly inserts herself into their lives. Its really stinkin funny and had me laughing out loud multiple times, along with the occasional double take when I heard a line that made me go "WHAT did they say!?" I also love that it isn't strictly comedy and that the story goes places I didn't expect it to, and with ch…

this was my first anime series after a very long time and this was a great way for me to get back into it. I really loved the eclectic cast of characters and I thought the story was extremely compelling. I had read a few issues of the manga in the past and I appreciated how the anime incorporated the sillier aspects the manga had; the art style switching back and forth from a more cutesy style and the fact there was this running inner monologue calling attention to the chaotic surroundings. I appreciated the fact it was poking fun at itself. those aspects reminded me a lot of Ouran (another anime i remember fondly). idk i'm not very good at writing reviews so i'm not sure what more to say. i do wish the ending had been a little less anticlimactic (as it just sort of ends. and you're left l…

Kuragehime is the kind of anime I wish I watched as a younger girl. I think the idea of women becoming so submersed in their interests that they become utterly alienating to the rest of society at large is an idea that I would have really benefited from, as an insecure teenager anxious to fit in. Aside from Tsumiki, the cast is entirely unapologetic and almost blithely unempathetic with the way they are obsessed with their hobbies: every single one of them finds some way to shoehorn their interest into whatever conversation topic is at hand, and they sometimes just blatantly do not care about the interlocutor at all. Although this made all of them annoying at some point, especially with how loud Mayaya is, it was also incredibly refreshing because it doesn't matter if I found these women p…

Actually pretty cool. It's about this shy girl who's super into jellyfish and lives with a bunch of other geeky girls who are all into different, kinda weird stuff. They end up meeting this stylish guy who shakes things up a bit, and it's funny seeing how their nerdy world collides with all the high fashion drama. The show mixes up humor with some real heartfelt moments, which kept it interesting even when the plot seemed a little out there.
I'd give it a 7/10 because, while it's definitely unique and has some solid laughs, the whole fashion angle was sometimes hard to get totally into. The characters are great, though. Really different from your usual anime crew, and they bring a lot of personality to the story. It's not your typical anime, and that's kind of refreshing, but it might not…

I love stories where women can just be silly. Most of the time, you see that the "gag character who is actually important in the story" is a role reserved for men. On occasions where this isn't true, their gag is usually something related to being a woman or something that women are stereotypically associated with. But, in Kuragehime, you have a bunch of grown women whose main traits are that they're deeply invested in their hobby to a comical fault, and they are often given the responsibility of moving the plot forward.
Additionally this show just looks really good. Everyone has a cool character design, and most importantly: he's just like me fr.

The anime was fine. It was boring, but fine. I didn't really expect the most complex plot line, since most people who watch this anime are watching for the fashion. Let's be honest here. Though would it kill them to actually try?! *sigh*
So the premise of this anime is that the main character is obsessed with jellyfish. Well, that's not all. Her mom tells her that girls will grow up to be princesses and blah blah blah. The problem is, the main character doesn't feel like a princess, since she doesn't upkeep her appearance. So she stays with other socially recluse women, and they all avoid 'TEH STYLUSH!!!' people. Their worlds will be turned upside down by a stylish cross-dressing man named Kuranosuke, who insists on hanging out with them.
The problem is, the characters are very one dimen…

Its a very touching story about a girl, more like a hidden talent who draws all kinds of jellyfish.I like that every character in the story has his/her own difficulties to face during the show and they're all uniquely funny.
Watching it gave me warm loving feelings and a spice of laughter. If you 're an introvert it can be very relatable. I recommend watching it in a time when you want to pass the time chilling, its a light and small show to watch after a long day.
The story was pretty much the characters just hanging out with eachother while you can discover their fixations and backgrounds. I like that the women in the story experience the dilemmas of womanhood and they are different ages and its pretty important for me cause it helped me normalize things I thought were irrational and jus…

For how highly rated this anime was it's surprising how unlikable the characters are. Tsukimi and Kuranosuke are fine enough but a bit bland but the NEETs? Oh my god what a desperately, deeply unpleasant collection of characters. They ranged from annoying to actively crappy people. It was hard to engage with the main storyline because yeah, I don't really care if a bunch of mooching jerks lose their house.
The designs for Tsumiki and Kuranosuke are pretty cute, I do like the art style when it's not drawing vaguely human shaped blobs. I don't know why the NEETs were so cartoony in comparison, it was distracting and kind of dehumanizing? Like Tsumiki is a great design for an unconventional looking anime girl, I don't think the others needed to look so inhuman.
I also hated the secondary st…

If you're a fan of josei anime with a touch of shoujo romance, then Princess Jellyfish is a must-watch. This quirky and endearing series follows a group of socially awkward women who bond over their love of all things nerdy and their shared fear of the outside world.
Our heroine, Tsukimi, is obsessed with jellyfish and lives in a shared apartment with other female otaku. But her life takes a turn when she meets the stylish and confident Kuranosuke, and a romantic subplot begins to develop. While the show features typical shoujo tropes like blushing, heart-fluttering moments, and romantic tension, the focus remains primarily on Tsukimi and her personal growth as she learns to embrace her own beauty and pursue her dreams.
One of the highlights of Princess Jellyfish is its relatable and div…

I loved the concept of this anime! I related to the characters deeply, as I have social anxiety and avoid any human interaction as much as I can. They are all flawed in some way, but no character was irritating or unlikable (except one but she’s supposed to be unliked). The plot was very interesting, and somewhat realistic. It definitely fit into the romance anime genre. But the whole story was ruined by the rushed ending! The characters didn’t have a chance to grow. The main problem was fixed, but it was so rushed! I still had so many questions, but no answers. I was so disappointed, but I’m hoping the manga has more to it!

Kuragehime is an anime about an otaku girl, Tsukimi, who lost her mother, trying to deal with the hardships of life, men, expectations and her own worries. It's a story about antisocial women, one about a young man exploring his own world and his gender identity and also one about love - be it romantic or platonic love and the struggles of such.
I have only watched the anime and I know that there is more to the story inside the manga, however I believe an anime series should be able to stand alone. Maybe I will read the manga, but this review will only talk about the anime and I will continue to see this anime as its own separate work. With that out of the way let me begin to rate each aspect of the show.
STORY:
The story follows our main character Tsukimi. She's an otaku who lives toget…

As a full grown adult, I still deal with self confidence issues and I think almost everyone does. This show is all about that battle and how a young female adult deals with this issue and how she over comes it with her greatest fear, a man.
The show takes you on a journey of self realization, overcoming fears, and building self confidence. The execution of those aspects were beautifully done. Each one of those characters in the show have their own issues they are dealing with but with the help of each other they find a way to improve them selves to become better. The reason why I believe this show deserves the 9 is because of how well through out the characters are and how grounded and relatable they can be. While I think the show was a little short the character arch of the main protago…
