Steins;Gate 0

Steins;Gate 0

Introduction

The eccentric, self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarou Okabe has become a shell of his former self. Depressed and traumatized after failing to rescue his friend Makise Kurisu, he has decided to forsake his mad scientist alter ego and live as an ordinary college student. Surrounded by friends who know little of his time travel experiences, Okabe spends his days trying to forget the horrors of his adventures alone. While working as a receptionist at a college technology forum, Okabe meets the short, spunky Maho Hiyajo, who later turns out to be the interpreter at the forum's presentation, conducted by Professor Alexis Leskinen. In front of a stunned crowd, Alexis and Maho unveil Amadeus—a revolutionary AI capable of storing a person's memories and creating a perfect simulation of that person complete with their personality and quirks. Meeting with Maho and Alexis after the presentation, Okabe learns that the two were Kurisu's colleagues in university, and that they have simulated her in Amadeus. Hired by Alexis to research the simulation's behavior, Okabe is given the chance to interact with the shadow of a long-lost dear friend. Dangerously tangled in the past, Okabe must face the harsh reality and carefully maneuver around the disastrous consequences that come with disturbing the natural flow of time. I absolutely adored the original Steins;Gate, so Steins;Gate 0 had a lot to live up to. I really enjoyed exploring the Beta Worldline (β) and watching the world descend into WW3, while the slice-of-life moments gave me more time with characters I already cared about. Maho Hiyajou was also an incredible addition and quickly became one of my new favourites in the series. She's an excellent character in her own right, while also serving as a fantastic counterpart to Kurisu without diminishing her legacy. Unfortunately, the pacing is painfully backloaded, and a lot of the season is spent watching characters I love struggle with depression and indecision, often at the expense of the personalities that made them so enjoyable. On top of that, the mystery at the centre of the story never felt nea…

"Those words are meant for those that dare defy god's final warning... An epigraph of their stubbornness" If Steins;Gate is a story about defying fate and resisting destiny through human connection, Steins;Gate 0 is the grounded, brutal reminder of what that defiance actually entails. It serves as a rawer, more chaotic deconstruction of the franchise's core themes: a tragic mirror to the original. Where the first story urges us to grab the universe by the neck and become triumphant, S;G 0 confronts the heavy reality of passivity, trauma, and stagnation. While the original starts as a slow, methodical and deceptive trap, Steins;Gate 0 strips the audience of this false sense of security altogether. From the get-go, the atmosphere is suffocating, heavy, and trauma-inducing, which unlike the…

(spoilers ahead) one of the biggest problems with the sequel is that it's just not given the same love and care that Steins;Gate was, there are a ridiculous amount of plot contrivances, dropped plot points, and hanging questions that effect the viewing experience of 0 and the original. like the worst offender of this is them teasing that one girl having reading steiner only to not do anything with it, or how the reyes plottwist (not a plottwist at all) was super underwhelming, or that secret conversation that Okabe and Amadeus had that he doesn't remember. disappointing and lazy. but worse than that, is the Mayurii romance plotline, I didn't care for it at all and it feels like such a spit in the face to the original series that you know no matter how emotional the moments were, I felt…

This sequel to Steins;Gate is indeed darker and more melancholic. Okabe isn't the same anymore, which makes sense given the story. The characters are endearing and still have their quirks, even if we hear Mayuri's "Tuturu" less often. There's occasional fan service, but not too much. The animation is flawless with beautiful colors. The music is better in my opinion than the first installment, with beautiful piano and orchestral pieces. The story is convoluted — I don't like stories involving time travel, because it immediately short-circuits my brain; it's already a temporal paradox, even if being on parallel lines helps salvage the logic. I can't help but wonder what happens to the timeline where Rintaro makes a time jump: is he still there with the others, or has he vanished from the…

Actually, most of the criticisms I had heard and the fears I had about Steins;Gate, between my first watch and this recent rewatch, didn't apply to Steins;Gate.. but several of them apply to Steins;Gate 0. The pacing is indeed fairly average, and even though most of the events make sense, I think certain elements like Okabe's depression (and therefore Kyoma's disappearance) change the work a lot, which loses much of its fun side, especially in the 1st half. I really like the appearance of characters like Maho, or even Kagari, but I don't think that makes up for all the fun, mystery, and emotion that was present in Steins;Gate, and which is significantly diminished here. The ending is very cool, especially the saving (if you know you know), which is high-level aura farming! Even if a bit r…

I genuinely had a difficult time grasping what the hell just happened. I mean the last 8 episodes, it was an absolute tumble. I binged the last 4 episodes in a row after binging the previous 4 before that the day before. I'd say it's hard to believe that this series revolved around that one decision that changed everything. A fitting end to an amazing franchise. Unfortunately, there is so much about this series I just do not like. The writing was considerably worse, a lot of subplots that felt fanservice-y and just a failed Makise clone. It be unfair to compare it to the original Steins;Gate series but it just wasn't interesting enough to be its own thing. I actually was intrigued by the more depressed environment this brought. It felt promising until it just fell apart. It tried to use i…

The time-travel concept seems quite legitimate, actually, with all the scientific terminology used. One mistake I initially made, was thinking the time-travel concept used here same ass the popular concept of parallel realities or parallel worlds. But here There is only one reality and world(parallel )don't exist simultaneously, making other world just a possibility of possible future It even had moments like (spoiler alert!) the line, "I need a 26378x New Gen processor, it's super rare," only for someone you know to suddenly possess it 😆. I watched this show a long time ago, back when I was just starting my anime journey, and I didn't delve into its complexities then. Despite that, it has secured a special place in my heart. Without needing mainstream edits to keep it in mind, the f…

Like the original series this anime became an incredible masterpiece for me Okabe who was a happy crazy scientist at the start of Steins Gate appeared as a sad helpless and worn-out person in Steins;Gate 0 This affected me deeply I can say I liked the story of this anime even more than Steins Gate There were many surprising events and the final scene really made me cry It was an amazing scene and together with the music it became a true masterpiece Is the story unique? If it was predictable, did you enjoy it anyway because you like this genre/set-up? The story felt very unique to me. It took a darker and more emotional approach compared to the original, which made it fresh and captivating. Even when some parts felt a bit predictable, I still enjoyed it a lot because of the sci-fi and psyc…

54th anime completed in 2024: Steins;Gate 0 I watched the original Steins;Gate years ago and it remained as one of my favorite anime series of all time. When assembling shows for the fully up to date to-watch list, I got reminded of this show by COMPLETE accident! It was not on my radar at all, but I am SO happy I was made aware of it and finally got around to watching it. I do kinda wish I had rewatched the original show before watching this, though. With a story and complex as this one, I think it definitely would've helped. But as soon as I started episode 1, I was immediately pulled back into this world and felt right at home with all these familiar faces and voices whom I had shared an absolutely incredible experience with in the past. For those who are unaware, this is a sequel/exte…

Steins;Gate 0 is an interesting look at what happened between Okabe giving up on saving Kurisu and receiving the message from his future self, which takes a dark tonal shift. The contrast to the more dorky light-hearted Steins;Gate could have been nice, and certainly does have some good ideas behind it, but is overdone and dreary. The first third or so is really engaging, then it gets more grueling for most of the show. So much time is spent on Okabe yelling the same shit about why he can't save everyone over and over and over and over and over and over. It's as if the writers are afraid we will forget that he is depressed. It would be nice if some of that time was spent on giving literally any of the side characters more development. Kagari is especially in dire need of a personality. The…

How do you make a sequel for a story that absolutely doesn't need one? Simple, you do the impossible. Nothing is out of reach for the mighty Hououin Kyouma. Despite being an unnecessary addition to the series, everything this show does adds to Steins;Gate and does not take away from it. It's not a perfect series, but still worth a 10, because it's still better than pretty much everything else but Steins;Gate. So if the whole series occurs in a world-line which is going to be replaced, what is there to do? Character development. A lot of character development, especially for Mayushi (who is the real hero of this story), but also for Okabe (who doesn't go by Kyouma anymore :(), and Daru, and new characters. Maho is a bit similar to Makise, though not a stand-in replacement as we also have…

This anime is an alternative to the original Steins;Gate. It isn't an alternative ending, really, but more like an alternative way to get there. A few people who liked the original didn't like this one as much. I think maybe it was because the main character was different. He clearly struggled more with the weight of his decisions throughout the show. However, I personally enjoyed this one more than the original, because it added more depth to the supporting characters, especially Mayuri, and I really liked that. I don't think I would recommend watching it instead of the original, but if you like the side characters in the series, it's nice to see them fleshed out more in this version. The animation was good, about the same quality as the first series. Same thing with the music. I'd say…

As with the first half of the original Steins;Gate anime, the bulk of the Steins;Gate 0 adaptation has been rushed to the point where it's difficult to care about anything that happens. My favorite scene from the Steins;Gate 0 VN is the Gehenna sequence. It's simultaneously one of the most haunting and epic scenes I've ever seen in fiction. It's absolute perfection; I wish I could erase my memory of it just so I could experience it one more time. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, the adaptation team decided to scrap it in its entirety. The lead up has been completely cut out; the scene itself has been replaced with some kind of confusing, abbreviated flashback-y dream sequence with zero context. The more impactful part of the scene was cut off from the build up, eliminating the contras…

As I finish my ongoing binge of the Steins;Gate series, I find myself here. I'm glad I watched this by release date rather than following a supposed chronological order found online. While I didn't end the Steins;Gate series with the best ending that is the original, I feel that going back to episode 24 of the original would have left me detached from Kurisu if I would've watched this before, as she isn't in this season as much. My recommendation is to watch it by release date. Now, on to the review. Steins;Gate 0 isn't a masterpiece, but it's still pretty great. Since this is the start of the bad timeline, it doesn't match the greatness of the original. At the start, we resume from Episode 23B. Okabe chose to live in a way that honored Kurisu's sacrifice, but it affected him deeply, leav…

Why?! Why make an additional season to one of the most beloved anime if you don't have something special to offer? I know this season adapts a visual novel and most people say it does a good job putting it in anime format. I haven't read the visual novel but if this is true then I guess my criticism can also be applied to the vn. Compared to the original, Steins;Gate 0 is boring, uninteresting, lacks a strong direction and ultimately feels soulless. It's so overstretched in its runtime that you spend 16 god damned episodes watching a borderline slice of life with eventual tidbits of plot points sprinkled in just to keep you awake that eventually feel like they come out of nowhere just to keep the overall plot on life support and artificially push it forward. Now I want to make it clear…

Why even bother making a sequel if it isn't at least faithful to the origianl series? This show feels like poorly written fanfic at best, a money grab at worst. I won't write an essay here, because you can watch a few episodes for yourself and realize everything is just completely off. The opening that represents nothing in the show; the tone which has turned into edgy PTSD and not actual nuanced PTSD with multiple layers; the characters that are suddenly all generic; the story that never actually becomes relevant because the entire show has no consequences or tension; random rule 34 moments; ChatGPT kurisu isn't actually relevant, interesting or even remotely well emulated. People who like this show are blinded by their love for Steins;Gate or have no taste.

I initially watched Steins;Gate 0 back in 2018. I am a massive fan of the original and recall myself being very disappointed by Steins;Gate 0. I was 17 years old at the time and figured I'd give the show a rewatch now that I'm 5 years older. Unfortunately everything I thought about the show back then holds true to this day, and I do not recommend this show to anyone. Especially not to big fans of the original Steins;Gate like I am. The main issue with Steins;Gate 0 is not what it doesn't have, because it does actually have a lot going on (too much in fact). It's the way in the plot is paced and presented to the viewers that's the issue. Not only are major events very easily swept under the rug, but there are times when the anime just drops a bombshell on the viewer only for that aspect no…

Why is this so sad and beautiful at the same time. This is a master piece. Steins;Gate 0 is a masterpiece in itself. Glad I did not listen to those reddit hipsters, this is on par if not better than the original. They are perfect for each other, but I can understand why he also cant let go of mayuri. Maybe this is the best anime of all time, definitely best work of fiction regarding time travel. This makes so much sense, I just rewatched steins gate ep22 and I get why that split second of her seeing the message made the difference, it warps beautifully, keeping in mind the past actions, the writers are literally geniuses. Damn myself for not being intelligent enough to admire this series. Guess I have gotta work on the intelligence stats, and I will visit again to rewatch this entire ser…

Yea, I think I just figured out who the ACTUAL third Einstein of the world is. No, I’m not talking about Okarin/Ma boi Hououin Kyouma. In fact, the Third Einstein is actually the CREATOR of this darn masterpiece. I think I gotta start worshiping ‘em or smth. They’re literally a god at what they created. Bottom line, yes I’m saying that Steins; Gate is the best anime franchise ever made. Deal with it haters!!!! Also, while I’m at it, lemme just talk a bit more abt this anime. Art Style- GOAT! Even better than 2011’s first season Story - ALSO GOAT!! On par as the first season! Progression - PERFECT! Characters - so good that I’m now needing multiple posters of each character and having an insatiable urge to keep all my profile pictures from Steins; Gate 0. Best girl - MayuShii. (Fight m…

Steins;Gate 0 was a great idea, as the episode 23 alternate ending was great. However, it suffers from being way too long and depressing, which ends up making it very boring. However, there is some excitement, and it is worth a watch if you need to feel like you know the complete story of Steins;Gate, and you can do some stuff during the boring parts. Story - 5 This anime definitely would have been better if it was 12 episodes instead. The first few episodes set the scene and help you understand how Okabe is feeling and where everyone else is at right then. The last few episodes are super exciting and feel like the old Steins;Gate, with comedy and fun time traveling that makes you have to watch the next episode right away. Everything in the middle... sure, it kinda had to happen for us t…
