The Ramparts of Ice

The Ramparts of Ice

Introduction

On the surface, high school student Koyuki "Koyun" Hikawa seems unapproachable and terrifying to most other students. In reality, Koyun is just insecure and prone to overthinking due to her uncomfortable experiences in middle school. However, her chance encounter with two boys in school—Minato Amamiya and Youta Hino—sparks a change in her. Like her friend Miki Azumi, the boys are never afraid to approach Koyun and see her for who she really is. Although Koyun starts spending more time with Miki, Minato, and Youta, she finds herself torn between her newfound bliss and her fear of getting too attached to others. Meanwhile, each of her friends quietly struggles with their own challenges. But as the new friend group continues to navigate high school together, Koyun and the others start to break out of their shells and enjoy their adolescence to the fullest. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The Ramparts of Ice - Hardened ice walls of misunderstanding, awaiting to be knocked down, one column at a time. I get it, you get it, we all do in some shape or form. Misunderstandings act as silent wedges in human relationships, often transforming minor miscommunications into deep emotional divides. When individuals interpret words or actions through the lens of their own assumptions, unaddressed misinterpretations breed resentment, mistrust, and distance. Over time, these uncorrected errors erode foundation of empathy, turning former allies into strangers and making clear, open dialogue essential for preserving meaningful connections. But what if, rather trying to fight it, there's a mutual being in wanting to understand somebody else better, and even have brighter days than lulling ov…

Koori no Jouheki touches on subjects that I genuinely find interesting and sensitive, and I can absolutely see what the story was trying to do. The characters have their own insecurities, emotional baggage, and difficulties connecting with others, which should have been exactly the kind of thing I enjoy. But somehow… I just couldn't connect with the anime itself. And that's frustrating because I don't even have a specific thing I can point at and say, "this is what ruined it for me." I understood the themes, I found some of the topics interesting, and I could appreciate what the story was trying to explore. But emotionally, there was always a distance between me and the characters. Maybe it simply wasn't the right story for me, and that's okay. Sometimes an anime can have all the ingredien…

The Ramparts of Ice was easily one of my favorite romance anime this season. I really loved how natural the characters and their relationships felt, especially the emotional moments and character development. The slower romance made everything feel more meaningful and kept me invested throughout the entire season. The opening and ending were also huge highlights for me. Both songs fit the atmosphere of the anime incredibly well, and I genuinely never wanted to skip either of them. The visuals and music perfectly captured the feeling of the series and made the experience even better. Overall, this anime had everything I wanted from a romance: lovable characters, great chemistry, emotional moments, beautiful music, and a story that kept me invested. I’m definitely going to miss it and I ca…

This is seriously some of THE best romance shtuff I've ever seen. For context (and I find this to be very important to actually see if you'll like something), I love Blue Box and Bokuyaba, and really didn't like Kaoru Hana. This is more dramatic and focused than Bluebox, less comedic than Bokuyaba, and just straight up better than Kaoru Hana in everything but animation, lol. Now, let me get my glaze out. I bounced off the show at episode 2 for some reason. Couldn't tell you why anymore, something about the setup seemed slightly generic perhaps, but once I gave it another go I got about as hooked as you can get. This show hit right in my sweetspot in every aspect. It's got drama but it isn't heavy or melodramatic and every inner conflict makes sense, it's got the fuzzy stuff and the heart…

Like you and I are polar opposites the author has gone 2 for 2 - absolutely incredible anime that is a different tone compared to its polar opposite- imo it’s much more realistic and mature - it can get slightly tedious with the amount of miscommunications but those things tend to happen quite a lot in real life - started off hating the minato but as the plot progressed I started to quite like their dynamic together but as always I tend to prefer the side couple - absolutely love yota and mikis development and can’t wait to see how it all progresses in season 2

Personally I am a big fan of the Anime and I can't wait for Season 2 to air soon! The characters were facing proper and realistic issues in their past and in the present. Some of the topic hit rather close to home but that made it the more relatable in my eyes. The characters themselves also developed nicely throughout the season and made some proper and good changes and started reflecting better on their own actions. On top of that the art style is really beautiful to look at. Its not the typical style but that makes it stand out even more. Glad the wait to season 2 isnt too long! Can't wait to see how it continues.

Amazing. Inspiring. Just what I needed. This anime absolutely had everything I enjoy as a romance anime fan. We had great characters. We had amazing storylines. Flawless transition between these storylines. The pacing and direction of the anime was top notch. The character design was simple yet very visually pleasing. Even though it followed common romantic themes it still felt like a very fresh story. It also broke away from generic romance molds that are in the industry today. I could go on and on about what makes this anime great(and part of that is that the romantic story type was one of my favorites) but I don’t want to spoil any of the perfection that is the ramparts of ice. Kocha Agasawa has an absolutely incredible feel for writing heartwarming and very relatable characters. He…

The anime has a compelling narrative pattern whereas characters' traumas are only portrayed and dissected throughout the series as events trigger emotional responses in them. This brings to the audience the feeling of actually slowly getting to know them as if they were real people caught in dynamics they themselves aren't always fully aware of (or not rarely misunderstand) from the beginning and hence develop organically throughout the story (together with their relationships). The issue though is how unbelievablely self-aware its entire cast is. In real life, most people — even with therapy — take many years in order to even basically connect past events to how they behave (and/or self-sabotage) today. In this show every major boundary or emotional issue is solved with a conversation;…

This show is heavily recommended, more of a romantic drama than a romcom though. It stands out in a sea of romances because 0ne- It explores romantic love, not just the cute bubbly relationship that works, but the ugly where dating happens between ppl with very different views on what they want from each other. Which is very realistic. And second,- it leaves the mold of marketable romcom. The characters aren't tropey, aren't supposed to be likeable, have genuine flaws that lead them to make mistakes. Instead they make you think, what is the reason he is like this? Is what I am hearing really true? Is he right or is she wrong? And the answer to that is everyone in this story is wrong in some ways, and right in others, so you get such varying reactions to the story and the characters. Othe…

I really enjoyed this anime BUT I had two things that I think could be better. First things first I felt like Koyuns love plot at the end really slowed down without a huge reason and I kinda wished there would be more of it~ on its place they just put over and over the same embaressing situation between her and her love interest and that kinda was making me annoyed. The second thing that I did not like and the reason I writing this review is that the season ended without any answers~ it just ended before anything was resolved between characters ~ there was beginning then the climax and then the season ended without the plot ending... So I like the anime but before second season I cannot recommend it to anyone because of the lack of resolution

In the previous season Agasawa surprised us with an adaptation of her manga 'You and I Are Polar Opposites' and it quickly became one of my favorites, it was a cute and all fluff comedy romance, but I couldn't help but notice how well and realistic the character writing was. It was surprising due to some bad rep with romcoms of similar style. Of course, due to the focus on romance it never went too deep into character stories and drama. 3 months later and another of Agasawa's works was being adapted into an anime, more focused on drama this time. And so, excited to watch, I added Ramparts of Ice show to my list. Now that season 1 is finished and season 2 is just next door, I can say that Ramparts of Ice has become my favorite anime. The author is a master at writing relatable characters.…

ramparts of ice (season 1) should be the new golden standard for the romance genre. in a way, this anime has a typical story. but the execution is beyond typical, in the best way possible. i'll start with the story now that i've mentioned it. it's a typical high school romance with your usual bells and whistles. but the way this anime handles drama is so satisfying. it uses misunderstanding to amplify drama in a realistic and believable manner, then it solves drama with realistic and believable communication between characters. it never creates drama in an unnatural way or solves drama with unnecessary grandiose. as someone who spent half of my high school years in china and the other half in australia, i can easily see this anime happening in either high school i went to. achieving this…

The anime tells an amazing story, but it is unfinished. Each story should have exposition, an inciting incident, rising action, a climax, and a resolution. This is basic stuff. However, this title lacks the last two elements in the main characters’ storyline. I do understand that the anime is really slow, and this is not a con, especially considering how well it is implemented and written in this case. However, when I finished watching the show, I did not feel satisfied at all because everything was leading to the climax, but they just decided to finish the season. There is also not much material for a continuation. The anime badly needs one or two episodes just to resolve the conflict between the main characters, and it is a shame that they did not make them. The anime itself is really…

Absolute peak. One of the best this season. Same author as "you and i are polar opposite" so expect it to be a very good school romcom. Main difference withYou and I are polar opposite are Ramparts of ice is more dramatic, conflict a bit more heavy, and the characters writing are more depth, and less fluff too. But the comedy aspect is as good and funny. The four main characters in ramparts of ice are all interesting, likeable, and have good depth writing. Especially koyun. She's so relatable and realistic. I also love the relationship between koyun and yota. I think they're the only BxG couple i know with such a beautiful platonic relationship. They have no romantic feelings at all but u can tell how they're really care about each other. Such a chemistry and lovely platonic relationshi…

I would call 2026 the year of mangaka Agasawa Koucha. Starting from the winter season and, according to the latest news, ending with the autumn season, we will have their work in every single one. I really liked the first season of You and I Are Polar Opposites. When I started watching The Ramparts of Ice, because of the quite different atmosphere of the title, it seemed to me at first that it was a bit worse. But episode by episode, this anime made me fall in love with it. Unlike You and I Are Polar Opposites, where a cheerful and comfortable atmosphere reigns, this anime immediately plunges us into the serious topic of bullying. And although the atmosphere becomes calmer and more pleasant later on, such a setup creates a clear distinction between these two works. In this anime, we have…

Koori no Jouheki is one of those anime that doesn't try to impress you, it just exists, Then somehow it steals your heart without asking for permission. The whole season feels quiet, but never boring. It's the kind of story that proves you don't need crazy plot twists or someone screaming every five minutes to keep people watching. Things that made this season special, The characters actually feel like real people. They make awkward choices, overthink everything, and somehow create emotional damage just by saying "I'm fine.". The dialogue feels natural. Nobody talks like they're giving a TED Talk before every scene. The pacing is slow, but in a good way. It lets every moment breathe instead of speedrunning everyone's feelings. The relationships grow naturally. No random magic. No instant…

This anime is so earnest and wonderful. It's realistic in a way that is fascinating and new. The drama is so awkward, everyone fumbles through every decision and things switch on a dime. Nothing's perfect, nothing's easy, it's just genuine in a way that is so refreshing. Koyuki is easily a new favorite protagonist of mine, she's incredibly layered. I love her, but some actions of hers are deplorable and make you come to question her. She isn't your typical do no wrong protagonist. She's flawed beyond believe and that makes her so much fun to watch. All of the characters rule...for those who start this show and aren't sold on Minato just give it time, all four main characters I feel I know so well and want them all to be happy. And Jesus Christ Anna Nagase absolutely kills her performance;…

Coming off the success of "You & I Are Polar Opposites" we have another work of Koucha Agasawa in "The Ramparts of Ice". For those familiar with Polar Opposites, it is very much a wholesome romcom while having some super strong characterization and character writing. While here we get that super strong characterization and character writing. This time we have a drama romance. To note, it focuses first on the drama, where it makes the romance in this story really intriguing. The story focuses on a group of 4 friends: Koyuki Hikawa, Minato Amamiya, Youta Hino, and Miki Azumi. This anime really dives deep into these characters and their various issues in high school. Koyuki, also known as Koyun, has her own trauma from middle school as one example. The other 3 have their own issues. What s…

I initially didn't have any plans to watch The Ramparts of Ice until I saw it was from the same creator as You And I Are Polar Opposites which is an anime I really enjoyed watching while it was airing. And thank goodness I decided to watch it because it is exactly what I look for in a drama/romance anime. It kind of reminds me of Skip and Loafer which is another anime I absolutely adore. Art Style/Character Designs - 9.5 Animation - 8.5 Themes/Drama/Romance - 10 Characters - 10 Story - 10 Comedy - 8 Music - 10 Enjoyment - 10 The art style is virtually the same as You And I Are Polar Opposites, however it uses a much more natural color palette as opposed to the bright and colorful palette of You And I Are Polar Opposites. I absolutely love how the art style looks, I find it to be quite uni…

I don’t know if anyone’s had a better year than Agasawa Kocha with two of her series airing for 6 months straight and it looks like both of them will get full adaptations, congratulations to her and thank you for making both Ramparts of Ice and Polar Opposites, two series that have really resonated with me and been some of my favorite romances in recent memory. Ramparts of Ice is actually my favorite out of the two and I couldn’t believe it because Polar Opposites was so good, I didn’t think anything could top that, but Ramparts being a shoujo and frankly feeling like a much more realistic and relatable story just pushed it ahead for me. I LOVE ample yearning, angst and drama in my shoujo romances and I got that here in addition to very well written character development, friendships and o…
